This episode ties in the overall theme of the show and what it's like to be "ordinary". Between eating parfait and bonding, Osani and Kobato went through a lot this season imo. Didn't look that way at first on paper but the two made a lot of memories together.

Osani standing in the waters with her dress show how carefree she is.

It's an interesting finale imo as despite no real mystery, we got to see the show tie up from where it started.

Season 2 announced, April 2025

I mean anyone would lose their cool after hearing something so out-of-ordinary. That reaction Osanai had after hearing Kobato sums up the conversation perfectly. She’s a liar, but she doesn’t care one bit… her looks are deceiving, but again she doesn’t care one bit. Though I think she finally cared after Kobato’s burst. Them going separate ways, and the way that was symbolised was the highlight for me. As usual, impressed with the direction of this series, except it was odd to see some new faces in the final few minutes of the finale. If that is hinting something xD

Series was, or maybe these characters were actually trying to be ordinary, like solving the food mysteries or doing a summer tour to cover all the sweet shops in town, but guess, people who actually “try” to be ordinary, face a very hard time to become ordinary. So yeah, the series had its moments. Though that genre jumping we had when this kidnapping thing started felt a bit out-of-place, still they managed to land the ending with these earth-shattering revelations lol. Not sure if we’ll get the second season, but if we get, then that will be welcomed. Actually it got one lol. Would've felt weird if we didn't after this finale, so yeah.

Didn’t like it as much as Hyouka, but yeah, it’s a fine watch on its own.

Yeah you know it's serious when Osanai does a gasp face that leads to a sad one. We only ever see her happy about her snacks and such, that this side of her is something I didn't think we'd see. But alas, this is where we are. While Jougorou over here is still trying his best to 'TrY To bE OrDiNaRy', at least Osanai has to balls to admit that for her, that shit is NEVER happening and that she broke that promise of trying to be ordinary.

And while all that, Osanai is playing this facade and is masking her feelings, Jougorou is nothing more than a liar. At least Osanai went into this whole 'TrY To bE OrDiNaRy' bs knowing that shit was a nothing more than a lie. And this relationship they have is also nothing more than a lie. Just a relationship built on mutual convenience and using each other as shields. Nothing more, nothing less. It'd only make sense to cut the ties here and there, no matter how hard it would be.

Impeccable direction of everything that followed btw, with the rain being tied to their relationship somehow. That just leading us to the epilogue of some sorts, with Jougorou getting confessed to? Huh? And this orange hair dude and Osanai going to get some strawberry cake... because ofc it would lead to that.

Really weird place to end things off on, but nonetheless, what a show. I came in complaining because I wanted a Hyouka season two rather than this, but now I'm coming out wanting a season two of this more than anything now.

I don't know how you do it Yonezawa, but your a genius. Props to Lapin Track as well.

Osanai's strawberry cake/10

UPDATE: Season two announced. Crazy how this got a season two quicker than Hyouka lololol

The climax with Yuki's discerning that Kobato, Dojima and his sister Sanae did help in her big plan to put Isawa behind bars, Kobato just finds all of that condescending, espeically using desserts as a metaphor for her lies. The kickback that trying to be being ordinary is also a lie, the only salvage effort being the entire dispute between Yuki and Isawa to concoct layers of lies for a plan like this that causes them to drift away from their initial goal of being ordinary people. What used to be the norm for Kobato solving cases here and there, as now become a living contraction and contradiction of not just himself, but his friendship with Yuki on the discovery of what it means to be ordinary. But despite all that, they've chosen to break up their friendship, not forgetting that the sweets tour was a rather enjoyable trip.

Back in school, Yuki and Kobato are a distant pair, though the latter receiving a letter from Tokiko Nakamaru to meet her and formalize their new relationship, bro didn't even get a chance to say no. The case becoming headline news for the newspaper club to potentially create a story out of it, much with Urino Takahiko's persistence against Dojima and his friend of Yuto Hiya, seeing Yuki gives him a chance to chat with her, being straightforward as she comes.

With the cliffhanger, the cases aren't going to end there with the continuation into Season 2 for April next year.

Sad to see this one end, but thankfully we won’t have to wait too long for more with the second cour coming soon! One of the best shows of the year no doubt.

To hell with being ordinary I say. Nothing wrong with standing out and being different. BUT I do think if Kobato and Osanai are gonna grow as people their best bet is gonna be to spend some time away from each other. You have two people who wouldn’t know how to be “ordinary” if it killed them, so them hanging out with each other constantly isn’t going to help.

Osanai trying to shift the blame to Kobato after she got exposed for planning her kidnapping is killing me tho, like how is this even remotely his fault 😂 even if he does enjoy solving cases, that don’t excuse you setting up Isawa and this whole intricate ruse, but I digress. This is even more of a reason why they both need to hang out with normal people.

Kobato stops hanging with Osanai and instantly gets a girlfriend?? What sort of EX aura does he have. I mean bro didn’t even get a chance to say yes, she just made herself his girl lmao. Total opposite of Kobato personality wise so that should help him develop. Osanai also looks like she’ll get a little relationship and it’s even funnier since it’s the same dude investigating the kidnapping.

Can’t wait for this next season so we can get more of these brilliant characters and cases.

Damn, I wasn't expecting this tone for the finale. It looks like being by each other's side just made them more un-normal which prompts them to part ways. Add the two confessions on top of that and they couldn't be anything more than strangers now. I know there's a sequel lined up but I'm curious where this is going ~

And the final piece of evidence in flames right before the ED there, must've been Osanai-san's work, I'm guessing. Better safe than sorry, am I right? My man confessed to her not knowing the real culprit is right under his nose...

All in all, this has been an up and down experience for me. I'm a massive fan of the author's previous work in Hyouka but I didn't want to have unrealistic expectations for this one, and I'm glad I came up with that mindset. Would've been very disappointed if I came with that, for sure. Aside from a couple of long and uneventful episodes, I'd say the remaining bits were entertaining and thought provoking, so a plus in general.

7/10 from here. I'm going to miss the theme songs, especially the Op...

I really dislike this ending, it doesn’t feel natural and I already don’t trust this new guy trying to swoop in on Osanai, because he’s clearly going to make a habit out of sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong.

10 weeks of mundanity comes to an end, but that's a lie, a well executed and sweet scented lie.
Still, looking forward to the new ordinary mundanities and it's 4 new possibilities.

I'm so glad people who wrote off the series had no effect on its continuation. This has been one of the best slice of life series' I've ever watched. The nuances between the characters, having malicious intentions, being mature about the consequences...this is a series that had its strength set in character development, or rather, character masks, maybe even better than any other series I've seen that has tackled this theme (whether its Oregairu, Classroom of the Elite, the Monogatari Series, Steins;Gate). This is not to say that this series is necessarily better than those series' (I would argue it's not in the case of monogatari and S;G), as many of those shows have other strengths that go beyond character masks, deceit, and ulterior motives.

I can understand why this series is not for everyone, but I certainly loved the direction it took, the nuance and foreshadowing sprinkled throughout the series, the excellent animation and soundtrack, and the insane antics of these characters (especially that of Kengo, you milk carton microwaving freak)

10/10...I don't want to give it this, especially since we have at least one other 10/10 this season (maybe even 2), but it's a series I cannot help but love.

@Rajidae it doesn’t feel natural because out of nowhere they terminate their friendship and then all of a sudden they are both approached by potential new love interests. Not only is it not natural but it’s a giant middle finger to the audience as they are getting invested in Kobato and Osanai’s relationship and don’t want to see them get cucked by randos we meet in this episode

After the bombshell of last episode, it's just the aftermath.

Osanai cut ties with Kobato. Kobato called out Osanai. They did not really any make attempt to become ordinary.

Ironically, they'll probably went into the step of being ordinary after they broke up.

Good that we now have season 2

That first scene was ABSOLUTE CINEMA, I loved the direction so much

I was a bit confused with where the episode went after that point, but it does make some sense when considering that there’s an announcement for season 2… Super excited for that. Just realized we’re getting season 2 of this before Hyouka 💀

By the way, does anyone know what that final shot was eluding to? With the RV catching fire and exploding?

My favorite anime this season (besides Monogatari off season). Aside from episode 2 being kinda lame, the other episodes were great. I think I liked this more than Hyouka honestly.

They broke up even before getting together and now Kobato got a girlfriend? and Osanai got a guy too? Great way too end the season fr and that burning vehicle was the cherry on top. If they didn't announce a second season and left us on this cliffhanger I'd be super pissed to say the least.

That said pretty good first cour with interesting stuff and props to the studio for the great adaptation, the background visuals in this were prolly the best in this season unless I'm forgetting something else. Was looking forward to this one as it's from Hyouka's author and while this had some similarity to Hyouka it's also vastly different. Anyway looking forward to s2.

Can't say I loved this show. OP is in my top 3 best OPs of the season though, for sure.

Development in this episode was crazy. The duo breaks up and goes their separate ways. They both get into new relationships, while ignoring each other. Felt weird how these new characters just appeared out of nowhere and took interest in MCs.

Anyways, the ending left bad taste in my mouth. Osanai never explained why she took such harsh measures vs Isawa, and even blamed Kobato for not trying to find out. Wouldn't it make sense to explain what happened so Kobato has legit reasons to back you up? Makes you wonder if Osanai is the evil one and keeps her mouth shut because Kobato won't approve of her actions regardless. How does she expect him to find out what happened between them without her telling him??? To be honest Osanai feels like a psychopath. Found her "surprise" reaction over being called a liar - cynical. It's hard to believe if her tears are ever real. I already feel sorry for the newspaper-club dude who took interest in her. I mean, sure, she's cute but you don't know what you're getting yourself into bud!

What's with the car burning at the end though? That's the same car (likely) that was used to kidnap Osanai. Who did it and why? Should we care?

When it comes to the works of the same author, I'd choose Hyouka over this ANY day. Hyouka did WAAAAY more in 10 episodes than this show. Definitely gonna check S2 but can't say I was impressed with this.

I respect Kobato for sticking to his guns about the law while reprimanding Osanai for her crimes, regardless of whether or not the Hasemi bitch deserved to go to jail for a lot longer or not. Because realistically, Osanai did break serious law after all and would probably be in the exact same jail as her kidnappers if she were caught framing Hasemi and her group. Even after Kobato calls her a liar, and Osanai acknowledges that, she still has zero regrets for what she did, even going so far as to try and shift the blame to Kobato for not trying to understand her pain and fears (I'd argue Osanai never tried to reach out to him, only using him for her convenience). Because of Kobato's natural disposition, if he doesn't pursue a career as a detective professionally or maybe criminal law studies (he'd make a good prosecutor) after high school, I'd be very disappointed. He'd give Conan a run for his money.

I'm glad they finally showed that flashback of Kobato's middle school days, something I've wanted since the start of this series. He sure was much more arrogant in the past than he is now. It's not surprising that his classmates around him thought of him as annoying with that kind of condescending personality. He wasn't wrong in his answer, but was wrong in the delivery of that answer with how he looked down from his high horse.

I'm a little sad Kobato and Osanai decided to end their relationship of mutual agreement to cover each other's backs at the cafe...When Osanai said she wanted to change the nature of their relationship, I was hoping it'd take a different turn, where they decided to start dating genuinely, forgoing the premise of trying to be ordinary. But I'm not surprised that they both agreed to go their separate ways, since Osanai did betray Kobato's trust after all.

Looks like Kenken and the younger sister of Sanae are doing well together. And it looks like both Kobato and Osanai are on the path of becoming more familiar with different people in their love lives. It's a little sad, as if you yourself were the one breaking up with someone you spent so long with. The newspaper guy better watch his back and never get on her bad side! He has no idea what he's in for.

Woah, WTF happened at the end there with the firey exploding van? Wouldn't the police have confiscated it since it was used in the crime? Is somebody committing suicide in there like Sanae...or murder? Or is it merely to get rid of the evidence? Whodunnit!? And since I'm here, I may as well ask what Osanai said or asked of Kengo in the Newspaper clubroom. I have so many more questions...

I'm glad there was a season 2 announcement, where hopefully Kobato and Osanai make up and get the old band back together...because they can't just leave us hanging with that! It's going to be quite a long while, as it's another whole year away, but I know it takes time to cook, plus the studio deserves a break.

That was some grade-A gaslighting on Osanai's part. It was ridiculous how she responded to Kobato calling her a liar for faking a kidnapping by calling Kobato a liar for "trying to be ordinary." These two lies aren't remotely on the same level.

And then she had the gall to suggest that they should stay away from each other. Literally "you're not breaking up with me, I'm breaking up with you."

Also, I didn't buy for a second that she was genuinely scared for her own safety and was tearing up about not seeing him again.

I'm okay with a character like this, but I didn't like that the show seemed to be implying that Osanai had good reasons for acting like that and that they're both in the wrong. Kobato has some issues, but being "annoying" and addicted to solving mysteries are much, much better than meticulously manipulating people and sending people to prison for a crime they did not commit.

Although it's sad to see them part ways (for now?), I do like that Kobato showed integrity by calling her a liar and rejecting Osanai's reckless crime.

What I'd like to know though, would be what the "homework from middle school" that Osanai mentioned was? Any ideas?

The end felt rather rushed, but maybe the studio had to decid on a more interesting cliffhanger other than "they broke up, that's it."...

I think she was referring to the Isawa Hasemi issue. An "unfinished business" from her middle school days, if you will. And now that's resolved.

Man I went into this episode thinking this was it for the series so I was super confused as it was wrapping up lmao. But okay there is going to be a second season and a lot more content in the novels I guess. This was pretty good. Obviously the production team went super artsy with the resolution and all the shots of characters talking in arbitrary places, but I don't think it was too distracting. Generally the mysteries did not feel too ass-pully with how the conclusion was found and even when things got more "serious" with the kidnapping it was still very low key.

This was a last episode? She creates this whole scheme and uses all her close friends to put one of her bullies in jail and then she says she isn't the only one that lied because Kobato lied about enjoying interrogating her... What? One is a whole of a lot worse don't you think? Then they decide to break their friendships off because... They said they wanted to be normal and together they're... not normal! Wow. And then they each get bf/gs in the last 5 minutes, okay cool.

I really enjoyed the quiet, comfy nature of this story. The underlying mystery of Osanai-chan and Kobato-kun's true nature, too.
Oh well, I guess I'm left with hoping the fall season includes a quality series I can retreat to from the hectic, stressful, and painful real life.

My favorite anime this season (besides Monogatari off season). Aside from episode 2 being kinda lame, the other episodes were great. I think I liked this more than Hyouka honestly.

Outrightly, one of the most boring anime I've ever seen. What a snoozefirst.

stick to garbo like Promised Neverland if your brain is too small for this
@YoshiYogurt

Ironically, Shoushimin is from the same director as The Promised Neverland. Never watched it, but I'm interested now to see it.

To talk about the ending this was one of the weirdest endings ever. Kobato suddenly getting a GF is extremely random. Osanai getting a friend which may lead to them getting together felt less random since the dudes clearly into her and taking things slow instead of jumping right in. The car at the end blowing up was also random, but I guess get rid of evidence or whatever.

Okay so this was probably the worst show this season, considering this is a lot like Hyouka I'm not surprised cause I hated Hyouka. Shoushimin series however I never hated, It was just pretty plain for my tastes. Honestly Osanai hard carried this show, Without her I would have actually hated it. But honestly I am curious what season 2 will bring considering how the show ended. I seriously doubt either of those sudden relationships will last but we'll see.

Personally I don't mind detective type shows, But they need more than that for me to like them. For this show Osanai hard carried it the other 2 main character imo were incredibly bland and boring.

My only positives from this show was Osanai, The animation, And Osanai. 5/10 for this show.

Shows like the detective is already dead or Rom kamonohashi's forbidden deductions imo where far better detective shows and I'm very excited for there season 2's for my tastes they had WAY better characters and plots and were both interesting and fun.

Siesta and Kimi and Ron and Toto are much better main characters in literally every way imo. Kobato was super boring, Osanai was a decent character though.

REVIEW:
This was a masterpiece this season, I reckon, this year! Absolutely loved it! It doesn't shy away from NOT ADDING panty-shots, crazy love polygons, and other gimmicks that gets the attention most of the people today.

For the first few episodes, Osanai and Kobato's mundane mysteries are really... BORING - there I've said it. Why? Because they're still "小市民" literally translated to "little citizens" or average people. But as the story progresses, the mysteries became more and more interesting. And then we got the last crime of Season 1: Osanai's Kidnapping Case. From then on, we can finally see the real Osanai and how cunning she is. Planning her own kidnapping from bringing the Osanai's Summer Sweet Collection to Kobato into letting her self be kidnapped by old acquaintances from middle school. And how Kobato, deducted her case, deducing who's the real perpetrator: Osanai (as we all know already), and the real motive of Osanai.

I'm pretty sure other people would find this boring, particularly the people who only watch anime for high school romance, boobs and butts, husbandos and waifus. But if you're fond of watching high-quality stories and reading mystery novels, I'm sure you'll love this.

RATING: 10/10
This is both a MASTERPIECE and a HIDDEN GEM this year. I'll hold this as one of my Top 10s this year, alongside Girls Band Cry.

These two sum up my thoughts pretty well. Kobato genuinely seemed interested and invested the whole time, even if he was lying to himself, about trying to be ordinary and helping Osanai with the same goal as well. She just straight-up used him to send a girl and possibly the others to prison potentially ruining their lives. They aren't even remotely the same. I thought maybe Osanai was secretly a hotheaded fighter and would beat the other girls up or after last episode maybe show remorse and realize that she could've just asked for Kobato's help with her situation but it seems like she doesn't care at all. As cute as she is and as genuine as the sweet shop trips were, regardless of how invested I was in their relationship, I think I'm glad they aren't together anymore.

I agree it did seem a little sudden. I would be more concerned with Osanai using the new guy somehow the way she did with Kobato but hopefully it's more interesting than that. We'll find out in S2

All in all I can't say I wasn't surprised or that it wasn't interesting I think I'm just disappointed with where it went. It doesn't really seem like there was much character development on either side, which is what I was most looking forward to.

what the fuck. i've liked most of the episodes but i did not like this ending at all, with them getting paired with randos. i remember people being disappointed with how hyouka ended but that ending was way better than this. i'll still give this a decent score overall because i liked the show but the ending itself is a 2/5 for me, hope the next season is better. also s2 before hyouka s2 is criminal as well lmao.

Not sure how I feel about this series (though I'm leaning negative) I guess I'll wait for season 2 before ultimately deciding. I get, like Monogatri, it was trying to be visually interesting for what is just a lot of two people talking, however it did not really execute that all that well with all the sudden background changes, it was more confusing than anything.

i would've hated this ending on this note without news of a 2nd season so that's nice that we will see this to the end , this show that seemly started off as very pretty but boring Hyouka 2.0 sure went places by the end confirming how unhinged our girl

can't help but think that ending line she just meant since straightforward guys are easier to used D: i'm sorry onsanai-san you're so hard to trust now

looking forward to season 2 since it should continue to be as good as this last case
