The romantic chill atmosphere till the end of the episode was really enjoyable to me. But obviously, the biggest thing from this episode is that plot twist.

Honestly, I assumed, like everyone else she had a 'heart', that she had feelings like a human.

I wonder what these wet marks on the notebooks mean. Are they Atri's tears?
If so does she have emotions!?

Very eager to see how the plot goes forward.

The Atri sexual harassment scene was very funny.

I don't expect much from this anime (as a player of the novel) but this is where the real story begins.

spoiler: Atri lying isn't entirely her fault, in the past when meeting Natsuki it was already mentioned that she was calm, that's because she acted robotic at that time, and wondering how to make humans happy since her owner didn't totally like her because of her robotic personality, she asked Natsuki what to do to make others happy and Natsuki replied that she should smile because if you smile those around you will smile too, so don't see Atri as the totally guilty one because Natsuki has something to do with the matter too

@ZoeEbe Yo, tag the spoilers.

Anyways, as a fellow who played through the VN, what do you think of the anime so far? For me it's alright but it kinda feels lacking in certain parts, especially the making the school generator part it falls flat compared to the VN. Anyways, curious to hear your thoughts.
@CoolCrow

If you don't mind me randomly answering, I think the 13 ep limit really screwed some stuff and it's clear a lot has been cut to fit everything.

Too bad they didn't go with 24 eps instead.

But overall, I still consider this a decent enough adaptation of the VN, it's not complete butchery or bad.

I'm in MAL app, How can I hide the spoiler here?

I think the anime is very bad, it has devoted little time to the small clues of the tragedy that will come and has included unnecessary original material.
But now in this chapter 8 it got good

That last part of the diary was an emotional blow for Natsuki. Now, it's a matter of figuring out how much of what Atri says and writes is true or false. I understand that Atri isn't human, but the reproduction of emotions and actions she displayed made her seem like she had a "heart." Her AI only allowed her to process the best scenario for interacting with Natsuki, but I can't help thinking that everything we've seen from Atri has been mere theater, an effort to be as close to a human as possible. It's no wonder that many of her writings end with "Natsuki doesn't suspect a thing."

The end of this episode is basically just a huge "Well..... shit... " moment. I always considered the possibility, but it still hit like a truck.

HOWEVER! This does not necessarily mean she does not have a heart. The only thing wrong with that diary is that it is written extremely cold and calculating, like a program. But pretty much anything will sound like that if you write it like that.

Glad Atri wasn't just a human in a robot body.

I feel like everyone sympathizes with Natsuki which is understandable, but Atri was always a robot, seeing how she somewhat programmatically reaches the conclusions that lead her to act in a certain way changes a precious few things.

Plastic Memories type of situation

It's different than that. Gifitias have "emotions" and are practically human. But only hindrance is lifespan.

Unlike Atri they are pre programmed to have emotions naturally (ig?)

Atri lives and learns just like humans do as they grow up.

SPOILER:

Atri does have emotions and a lifespan. I said "Plastic Memories" situation because I wanted Atri and Natsuki to spend their last days together, just like Isla and Tsukasa, which does indeed happen. I just finished the VN today.

True, they could've done much more if they went with 24 episodes. Albeit the adaptation's shortcomings, it is a not bad adaptation and quite enjoyable to watch so far. But I really can't recommend the anime to those looking to get into ATRI for the first time. The VN is really the best way to experience the story imo.

Anyways, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

They also didn't put much time in contextualizing Natsuki's suffering regarding his limb.

As for the original material in the anime, the only thing I found odd is the shootout scene that happened few episodes back, which kinda felt out of place for the type of story ATRI is.

But yeah, episode 8 is a step up. Especially at the latter parts of the episode, it has small cues to pick up on.

Anyways, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

So, Natsuki is 17, we finally get confirmation on that, I expected him to be a bit older.

I don't like that he thought of eventually falling in love with Atri, she is more like a little sister, or even a daughter, than a lover, I see her that way at least, and I'm not saying that because of her appearance but because of the way she acts.

The way this episode ended was harsh, but good, I personally would be really sad but I think I would have been more calm that Natsuki, she is a robot after all, in fact, it would still make me kinda happy because it would be a relief since the lovers thing is over thanks to this, and even if almost everything so far has been a lie, it doesn't change the fact Atri is really trying to be the best robot for me (is kinda weird for me to talk like if I were Natsuki, but this comes from a VN so I think that's how this is intended to make you feel and think).
Sorry if my english is bad (γ£Λ˜β–½Λ˜)っ~~~

I did not expect this to step into the territory of discussing philosophical zombie stuff and behavioural simulation.

That doesn't necessarily mean she doesn't have an analogue of what might define as a heart - i for one am harshly skeptical that such a thing is possible at all, but this doesn't rule it out, as earnestness could lie within a layer of social mimicry, where the intent is still genuine and not meant to be deceptive.

I'd take her either way (especially cuz she small cute and funny). If she's human i'll treat her human, if she's not i'll treat her in a way befitting of her pseudo-humanity, with a bias towards well meaning and value (because i think you should treat everything well, even inanimate objects). Either way, the behavioural traits are clearly very effective at filling basic human needs of companionship and entertainment, making her, if nothing else, fully capable of filling the role of being a good friend.

I agree with this, in the context of it being more complicated than just the overused trope of "robot has feelings oh think of the minority", where they play out robots as analogous of neurodivergence or something.

I'm glad that this intends to dig into the subject of what AI heart might actually look like if it could, or if it's all just emulation, and tell a more relevant story with it. It understands that AI is not the same as human, and if they do have their own 'organic' and driven initiative that we tend to associate with genuine humanity, that it will look a fair bit different from how we are used to thinking about it.

ok I am stupid and just came up with a crazy theory.

Atri is a robot created based on Natsuki's mother (or has her heart or whatever sci-fi thing works)
- Natsuki lost his mom when he was a child.
- Atri was created(?) by Natsuki's grandma and the reason she looks like a child is bcoz Natsuki's gradma thinks she is her daughter (Natsuki's mom)
- Natsuki reminds him of Atri as someone like an Onee-san (but actually its more like a Mother)
- Minamo teaching her a dish and calling it "Mom" >>a hint?
- That passed out black hair girl that suddenly flashed in Atri's memories could be Natsuki's mother?

I thought I was cooking until that very last scene, seems like Atri might really just be a programmed AI humanoid though

I know I sound stupid but what if?

In that case I think it would have been even more weird if Natsuki didn't back out at the last moment and made love to Atri.

@-Stray ugh, it just made me feel for Atri for real, I felt cheated given she was like a regular human (if not one with a way lower mental age than physical one)

Thing is he's being a complete idiot. Nowhere in that diary does it say she doesn't have a heart. He's just interpreting her wanting to make him happy as a program, when in reality, she just doesn't know what a heart is. It's written in a cold, calculating way because she's still a computer, and those are just logical facts.

That is the reason you should not forget that the flirty and hyperactivity robot girlfriend is just a machine.

reading her notes was probably terrible after Natsuki just developed stronger feelings for her.
But it's not the fault of Atri, she is a machine, it's the way she operates by default.

The other question is why the AI did all the fooling around where Atri acted super silly, upbeat and flirty,
did she learn human behavior from anime and cartoons XD.

Natsuki should accept Atri for what she is, a cute robot. she has no weird code or terminatior like hiccups,
she could never be a real girlfriend, but something very close to it

As usual (in order to avoid controversy) MC decided he's not in love, he just likes her as a friend.

What a twist though, I was also convinced that Atri was genuine, but turns out she's acting the way that would please Natsuki. Part of me still doubt this though. Ai can be complex, and humans can also be conflicted whether their own feelings are genuine, or if they're doing things since that's what's expected from them. I can understand why Natsuki got mad though. He feels like he was toyed with. I can already guess next episode will be heavy and I already feel sorry for poor Atri, since she will likely be treated harshly.

When bro finds out everything was scripted.

I mean Natsuki's reaction is understandable. Who wouldn't be hurt in his situation after reading that. But to be fair, this could've happened in a relationship with a human too. Both are still too inexperienced and naive.

The fact this was a Crunchyroll localisation is becoming painfully apparent now. How did a light-hearted, jocular insinuation that Natsuki was a "lolicon" turn into "That's gotta be statutor—", with the uninterrupted line assuredly being "statutory rape"?

Otherwise, Atri was as cute and mesugaki-esque as ever; though the analytical phrasing, articulate diction and emotionlessness of her diary entries will no doubt be a point of contention in coming episodes. Perhaps Nonko, Atri's late master, instructed Atri to maintain the diary as a sort of ritual to remind her of her synthetic origins, so as she wouldn't become "too" acclimatised to intimate connections without an intuitive dissonance from them on a more introspective level.
