Somehow, this episode made ear muffs into a story gimmick. Lum and Ataru's trip to school took a bizarre twist this episode. I mean, it might not be too bizarre for this type of anime but the school really changed from what he's used to. All the adults in class...and changes. Ataru's reaction was gold but the change is bizarre. Maybe next time, they should take a normal route to school. |

main guy and cousin guy got a headphone warmer, and they got switched. it's good for main guy because he can do whatever you like. he's so good at being cousin guy so no one believes cousin guy in main guy's body. third guy to switch came and main guy back to his body. from a short cut, they were able to get to school without getting late, but it seems like he was transferred to future, where the classmates are wearing suits. he also met his future son. it seems like he married childhood girl. both shocked because of misunderstanding. oh, that guy at the end, finally! part 1 of one story next. new Fuji TV anime announcement coming up on March 11, 2024 as Lineup Announcement on March 11, 2024 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W47P7fsRbZM |

Those earmuffs that transfer souls sure are something else, huh? Ataru scored two pairs of ear muffs at a steal from a street vendor. While out with Ten, Ataru quips, "Wearing these will make you a hit with the ladies," and hands one pair to Ten. The instant they slip on their ear muffs, Ten and Ataru swap places. Later, Ataru is on the verge of being late yet again. As he dashes through the streets toward school, Lum, donned in a uniform, zooms past him from behind. She offers a shortcut and leads Ataru to an empty lot. There, Lum conjures a four-dimensional space that leads straight to the school. When he finally arrives, Ataru realizes he's somehow ended up at Tomobiki High School, but ten years into the future! I've got to say it this time, poor Ataru. His luck was just terrible in this episode. |

If Rumiko Takahashi could have imagined when the chapter was released on March 20, 1979 that it would take almost 45 years to be animated.๐
I know we already had a chapter last season that was skipped in the original manga, but this just feels even more blatant. The story is chapter 12, when Urusei Yatsura was just starting to form and you probably didn't yet know what extent this microcosm would reach. So this was probably time to try out some stuff, looking in which direction it would go. Imagine reading it back in these days and waiting for an adaption, which never came in the OG anime. But now its the day, time is ready. It's almost like opening a time capsule after years. I remember the chapter in many ways, not just because the year "1989" appears at the class reunion - which might be considered as distant future back then and now, even more further in the future, I'm glad it finally gets its adaption after all this years. |

I just listened to all the OPs and EDs from this today, and all of them are amazing, but the second one just can't leave my head rn. The first half is hilarious XD. I wanted more. Oh, Ataru has a wife in the future? Please be Lum. Or they probably won't show her. 15:08 ๅบงๆทใใใ (zashiki warashi lit. tatami room (formal Japanese room) child) - spirit-like beings told about mostly in the Iwate Prefecture. They are said to be yokai that live in parlors or storage rooms, and that perform pranks, and that people who see one would be visited with good fortune. We don't know the person that Ataru thought was his future wife right? Anyway, I hope it's one of the possible futures, or it was changed now (or I'm thinking too much about a gag anime lol). Ataru and Lum being really worried about it is kinda wholesome. Oh, the next episode will have the doors in space from the OP. Also it's just one part? A longer story? Excited for it. |

The ear muffs that allows you to switch bodies huh neat trick. If anything Ten chan really is the perfect disguise. A target goal of 470 units for those body changers really is way too optimistic. Some shortcut that turned out to be. Alt kid Ataru though was kinda creepy. In this timeline looks like Ataru's a bigger jerk than usual. The shock that both Lum and Ataru got here though was immense. Jerktaru didn't deserve to have Shinobu as a wife. |

Ataru is probably the worst possible person to switch your bodies with. No matter who you are, he'll find a way to abuse it. Also, this episode was much funnier in the original where he switches body with Sakura as well and lots of other insanities happen. Oh well. I liked how they kept the scene from the manga where "Ten" wants breastmilk from Sakura. That shit was hilarious lol. One other positive change was that they didn’t switch their voices with their bodies. It makes so much more sense this way. Other than these improvements, the original anime episode was much better, like most OG anime episodes. lumjulian said: If Rumiko Takahashi could have imagined when the chapter was released on March 20, 1979 that it would take almost 45 years to be animated.๐ I still can't believe they adapted this chapter all these years later. That second half one is a really great adaptation of chapter 12 from the manga that was never adapted before. The storyline is basically both Ataru and Lum jump in one of many possible timelines in the next 10 years. Never in the day I thought Kokeru would appear because he was one important character that really hinting on the time travel story back in early manga chapters. So watching the distressed reaction from both of them dead worried for their future is really good because next week we are getting to the most important storyline in their relationship and meet Inaba. While I thought this episode is great for introducing this story, I thought it was a bit too early just saying. |

@lumjulian It was a nice segment! Do you mean to say the manga version had no connection to the Inaba arc? Incidentally, the earmuff segment leaves me glad I dropped the old anime. This new version is much funnier! Yes, I did watch the 80s earmuff episode. |

And it was worth the wait. Such a cool episode. Just the beginning with Ataru's mother. Instead of "I never should have had him," she mumbles something about how it's unbelievable that they have the same genes. The way to school is again typical Lum/Ataru comedy. I always like it when she just randomly pulls out the most absurd sci-fi objects out of her.๐ The time travel was also really cool. Even if they had to adjust a few things. In the manga, Ataru realizes that he has traveled 10 years in time because the year "1989" is written on the board. In the anime, the old onsen mark has to be used for the explanation. Mendou and Ryunosuke are not absent from the class reunion, they were simply not invented at the time. And Lum still wears her bikini in the manga and not her school uniform - since she wasn't enrolled in school at that time.๐ Otherwise, it has been adapted very faithfully after 45 years. There were a lot of good gags, like Ataru crying over the food, holding his horror as Lum to Kokeru, or the ice cream ball after 10 years of inflation (In the manga it's 1500 yen, or 10 dollars.) Luckily it's not that far yet came.๐ Poor Lum. She was so sad when she couldn't find a horn on Kokeru. She even looked for it specifically. Even Kokeru started crying. One thing that was a little different in the anime: The woman who is mistakenly thought to be Ataru's mother has a severe overbite in the manga and otherwise looks very frightening - which is also the reason for Ataru's shocked expression. In the anime, I think the lady actually looks pretty normal - so Ataru's shocked reaction is a little out of context. Lucifrost said: The manga chapter 12 was published on March 20, 1979 and is therefore at the very beginning of the series. It was a nice segment! Do you mean to say the manga version had no connection to the Inaba arc? At that time, Shinobu was still planned as the main character of the series, which is why Lum didn't appear in some early chapters. Until the love of the fans promoted her from supporting character to main character. Inaba arc began on April 23, 1986, a full 7 years later, relatively towards the end of the series. I can't imagine that the Inaba arc was already in mind when Chapter 12 came out. So there is no such direct connection in the manga as there is now in the anime, where a very very early chapter and a very very late chapter are actually cleverly linked as a continuation story. But as 0451 already said, the next few weeks will make a lot of things clearer. Wait for it (or read the highly recommended manga if you can't keep yourself on the edge of your seat because of the excitement๐). Nevertheless, a very cool episode and, with all the background context, even a small sensation. Imagine being "Shonen Sunday"-reader back in 1979 and now finally getting to see the adaption, you've waited so long. It really feels great to see how a story, which was only told in printed form for 45 years, feels so alive and well in 2024. This show never fails to suprise me.๐ |

This time we see the 24th episode in the original and the adaptation of chapter 12 of the manga, which was not filmed in the 1981 anime, which makes it an exception, by the way, I do not know why it was not used in the 80s anime, but I liked chapter 12, in fact it was exactly filmed, in general I like intrigues with the future and alternative realities. The biggest problem here is the timing of 10 minutes, it's very short, you don't even understand what the essence of the series is, sometimes it even resembles some kind of sketch that was stretched. The same series with headphones, it's purely comedic, but some of the jokes just disappeared in the remake. |

I think it's fairly obvious at this point that this future where Shinobu is Ataru's wife isn't quite right and isn't going to be the canon timeline in the end. It's way too obviously bait that's going to be expanded on/further explored later, so let's see where that goes. |

It has been a hot minute since I’ve seen the earmuff that switches bodies episode, I don’t remember exactly how it goes but it was quite fun in the remake, I liked how the VAs kinda talked like each other’s characters, and Ten as Ataru getting his ass beat while Ataru as Ten was enjoying a slice of what Ten usually gets was hilarious, I’d say Ataru won in this one despite that final shock lol. Also nice line about wanting to suck some booba lol, based of the remake to include that one. It is a shame we didn’t see much other body swapping besides Ten and Ataru like in the OG but i do still like what they did with it. And the 2nd half is apparently one the OG didn’t adapt, I liked it a lot and it’s definitely a good buildup for what the next episode is adapting, however I do remember the OVA that adapted it originally did have a bit kinda like this unadapted chapter so it did feel familiar because of that. It was still pretty great seeing Ataru react to seeing his “future” kid lol, and then he and Lum both being upset at what happens to them, if only Ataru actually saw he ended up with Shinobu he may have been more happy lol. And at the end we got teased a new character, I won’t spoil who it is but I am happy to see it’s more than 1 part, giving how the original OVA is almost like a movie it definitely needed the extra time. |

Ataru's mind was having the best time in the body swap part of the ep. But once they are back, it's easy for Ten to blame Ataru for teaching him those things since that happened when he asked for advice on Sakura before. Lum's portal wasn't just to a Sunday, but 10 years into the future. Where was the future Atarau though? Lum's upset as she is not Kokeru's mother, and Atarau's upset with who he thinks will be Kokeru's mother, someone he does not even recognize. Perhaps the future can be changed, no? |

Season 2 is so much better than season 1 (which I thought was great).
@poemofdevil I feel like theres been alot more moments of substance here and there alongside largely better comedy bits. Alot of parts in season 1 feel like they would set up a wacky scenario and not really escalate it as much as it could. |

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me |

Inaba incoming, was cool how they adapted chapter 12 as a logical lead-in for him appearing in the next episode. Might have to go back and rewatch the OG series' OVA 2 as a primer for the next episode. |

Earmuffs for 150 yen sold by a shady merchant? A discount of 200 yen for 2, Ataru got his money's worth for himself and Ten, hoping that they can pick up some girls. Instead, they swapped bodies...and Ataru in Ten's body finally has a chance to score with the girls. The only lady that he can't score with is Sakura, though her 6th sense temperaments sure pick up fast. And the confusion...oh welp. Ataru's trip to school this time is very unusual, and Lum doing him a favour to reach school early through a 4D portal, it does the job...but instead, brings him to an alternate universe 10 years into the future. Too bad that Ataru lose his lunch over a kid, but that his potential wife...is someone else, and not Lum, which she has to take care of him for the time being. With the name reveal of Kokeru Moroboshi, he's not Lum's kid, though finding his mother and potential wife, Ataru has to miss the annotation that he would be married to Shinobu in that timeframe. What a revelation though, Ataru doesn't have it easy. |

Ah yes, the good ol body swap episode. A staple in every good long running comedy. Ataru was wilding out for asking Sakura directly. Fun segment, alas cut short and it didn't go full chaos like the OG version. I don't remember the time traveling to the future only to the past, but looks like we hit some major story arc. |

Straight up asking to suck her boobies was too obvious for Sakura lol. By the way, yeah, future can be changed and whatever whatever would be the conclusion of this thing we started in second half. |

First half was funny, especially Cherry arguing with Sakura in Ten's body at the end ๐ . But the real highlight is the second half. Ataru's mom has some strong genes, since him and his son have identical looks. Shinobu being the mom was a huge suprise to me. I like Shinobu, but seeing how upset Lum got when she saw she wasn't the mother was painful. I'm hoping bunny boy at the end helps change that outcome ๐๐ผ |
