Am I the only one who enjoyed this show a lot? To be very honest even though it was nothing special and "predictable" it was still a really enjoyable watch.

The ending wasn't even bad, it either gets a second season or we have to read the source material. Sadly there was no kiss scene with zero :V

I still can't let it pass: how come all of this mess was caused by Thirteen simply misunderstood Zero's wish - even when they had the chance to straighten up things before Yohei had to assume heroic role in ep.10
I know their conversations are deliberately arranged to reveal one plan at a time, but i just cant shake this odd feeling why must the writer have Zero explaining Thirteen's villainy plans then have Thirteen correcting any inaccuracies? It's a waste of time & ineffective way to progress a plot. This inefficiencies happened numerous times throughout the episodes in a way or another

On the positive side, I love how comedy are inserted during serious moments, like when they stopped fighting for dinnertime, or when Zero suddenly wakes up, interrupting the supposedly sad scene. Man, how I wish to see the same in Beauty & the beast for example. If only Disney had the nerve LOL

This show turned out okay, thought they had the ability to do much better but they played it safe with the ending. Script was terrible at the start, improved, and then stayed consistent. Animation was so-so, which surprised me as I expect White Fox to be better. Well, they did do Zero justice (they seemed to have nailed white hair girls), but mercenary just felt lacking. I did enjoy the show, so I will probably rate it a 7.

This anime started really promising, and has interesting story in the middle, too bad it had to be ruined by stupid Thirteen suddenly turned into good side. This doesn't really need Season 2 since it was kinda satisfying ending.

The resolution makes no sense.

1. It's an extremely small country for all of them to travel so quickly, like only a single town.

2. In the middle of the fights between soldiers and witches, the witches lost power, which led to the soldiers saying ==> oh, you don't have powers anymore, let's live happily together. Yeah right. witches should had been wiped out as a result.

3. The boars conveniently made a circle without crushing into Zero & co by calculating how much momentum they had before they were struck by the power of the magic.

4. Given how weak Albus was, which was noted throughout the series, she was critical to complete the Denial magic.

5. Since the witches completely lost the fight, they should either be killed at spot, or rounded up and burnt at stake. Instead, Albus became the state witch. Maybe one day, but it apparently happened immediately, which should had been politically infeasible due to the preceding event.

6. Albus said she doesn't want to burn anyone anymore, and then proceed to burn 13, yeah it's a fake burn, but still... she needed better lines.

7. The country was denied Magic, and then they started teaching magic??? Wouldn't the students just get frustrated to be taught things that they couldn't use?

This story had a great premise and strong moments, but instead of going for realistic outcome (witches lost, lots people killed, they retreat to regroup for even more revenge), it went toward happy Disney ending. Unfortunate choice.

Was not expecting anything when I picked this, but this turns out pretty great. I don't know why people gave such low score of 5 or lower on top reviews, but to me this was one of the most enjoyable series from spring, while most of the other anime are just chore to watch.

Also, I agree with the post above me, the characters were great. I enjoyed their conversations very much. The whole thing about 13th was very cliched, and was rather similiar to those cliche shoujo manga dramas but nevertheless, it was still not that bad. Would love to read the light novel source for more detailed explanations. 8/10 easily from me

Was an 8 or 9 out of 10 for the first 4 episodes and a 2 out of 10 for the rest.

When Zero and Mercenary were palling around it was excellent nonsense fun. Too bad they had to introduce a (poor) storyline.

Enjoyable, but not the best show ever. An okay ending to an ok anime. Didn't have the best storyboard but it was likable, especially Zero as a character. Thirteen wasn't dislikable and was understandable, he just wanted to protect his sister, just in a wrong way. I'd like to see Youhei's human form and all but a season 2 is unlikely.
7/10 at most.

What a bad way this show turned out... It had so much potential with the chemistry between Youhei and Zero. I would have loved it if it were about their travels and some drama here and there, kind of like Spice & Wolf, but nope, they introduced several logical flaws (most of which people already stated here).

Even the plot itself became very predictable after Thirteen showed up. Like, he is one of the most obviously shady characters I've seen in a while. Why would anybody trust him is beyond me, and especially letting him live after what he had done (even if it was for a supposedly good but messed up cause). The Sorcerors of Zero were also stupid to trust a faceless/nameless guy, and even make a contract with him in exchange for power/knowledge. I also wonder why they were let go so easily after their rebellion (though I know that the rogue witches weren't their doing).

Albus was annoying most of the time, and wolf-guy was okay at best, but his personality doesn't really explain things like him keeping slave girls and being a douchebag in the beginning.

The only good things I really liked about this are Youhei, Zero, their relationship and the charming ED. I give it a 6/10, just because our two main characters were so enjoyable to watch and since at least I wasn't bored while watching it, even if I couldn't fully enjoy it. Missed potential is what best describes this show for me.

That was a very mediocre show. It started out interesting but half-way it just became boring and generic. I mean I wanted to see more of their travels and adventure but it never really came to that point instead it became a nonsensical story about witches vs humans. The characters were alright I guess. I wasn't really fond of them anyway. But I don't understand why that perverted wolfman who kept human girls as slaves suddenly became a good guy. Like WTF? I think 5/10 is a prefect score for this anime.

Ending wasn't that bad, though a lot of things were left unexplained. I agree with most people that this show was mediocre but it wasn't horrible. I was surprised that Thirteen was Zero's brother, I just thought they were really close.

I have a feeling there may be a season 2 by the way it ended but it's not clear. If there will be, I'll probably watch it. 6/10.

So when Zero asks why the couple in the city is kissing, and Yohei asks if she knows what a kiss is, she says she thinks it's "the act of pressing your laps against a demon's phallus to..." and is cut off.

When Thirteen is trying to scare Yohei away, he says "Zero has called forth the highest level of demons to create her magic techniques, what do you think Zero offered to them as sacrifice during her summonings?"

Then during the ritual, after Zero summons the Nameless King of Demons, he says "Too long it has been, my beloved."

I think the pretty obvious conclusion is that Zero sexed this demon up to create magic.

Personally I thought this as well, but I kinda don't want it to have played out like that x) I'm so pissed off that they didn't elaborate what the fuck happened between the demon and Zero.
I found on "lifekino.club" that Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho would be renewed with a season 2, but I didnt find that information of any other site so who knows :<

The ending song is so dang chill.

The show sucked, it sucked in the second half, Albus should have never taken the spotlight, her character sucked, she did a 180 after the plot reveal of her being Sorena's granddaughter and it felt really weird. I know Sorena (why tf did she look so young) is her grandmother but Sorena died when she was still an infant, she doesn't really know her at all, and she got all emotional about her like they've lived together forever.

I also wish there was more relationship development, platonic or not between Zero and Youhei instead of Zero coming to like Youhei almost immediately from the very beginning. It's just not believable how Zero can do so much for Youhei despite not knowing him that well.

Hordem's reveal was also really out of nowhere, his character also did a 180 like Albus, it's a terrible "twist", it's contradictory.

13 basically just said "screw the plot i'm joining the good side", immediately after his loss. It happened so quickly.

Show was cute and fun at the beginning, mess by the end. Yautja's review is pretty spot on.

That was pretty enjoyable. Well, with the exception of how stupid Albus was all the time.

I'm wondering how close it was to the original though. The timing for the last episode was way too good. I wish all anime could create final episodes like this. Most questions answered(well, we don't know if the wolf guy will ever get his fur back. That tail was hilarious every time it appeared) and the core of the story was solved. Sure, Youhei wasn't turned back yet but how boring would that be? He'd just open his tavern and leave Zero alone again.

I kinda wish there was more but I suppose I'd have to look for the source in that case. Well, maybe at some point we get a sequel.

demons are tricky that one thing & some of them get in their head that u are theirs once u have summoned them u read to much in to it in to the demons words :)
second have u seen it done in this anime? well i haven't so the sex thing is impossible as far as we know cause demon had to possess Youhei body cause it was high lvl daemon that also makes it impossible

also some demons take demon contrast like marriage like in Sekire Tsukiumi took becoming Minatos Sekirei as marriage so if she has a contract with a demon she just didn't summon him then this could be the case

also she could be one sided desire of the demon or the contract involved soul so after death he could have her as hes wife

but what bugs me is that no1 asked her what the demon meant by beloved, if i would have been there i sure wouldn't been able to resist asking that

BDW i expected more ppl to mention it i guess they missed it but i was hoping no1 would new i cant forget it & new i have bad taste in my mouth cause of that so THX for reminding me what the demon said lol

ShotInTheHead reading manga wont give u answers reading novel does cause it was adapted from novel

still this little doupt leaves ntr taste in my mouth

Well that was certainly interesting. Not a bad little fantasy adventure series though the thing that stuck out to me most was the unusual way the story unfolded. It's not every series where the primary antagonist just up and does a face-turn with basically no consequences in the penultimate episode. But sure enough that's what happened. Thirteen was even added to the group shot of the protagonists at the end of the opening theme for the final episode for crying out loud! Honestly it kinda felt like if Inuyasha was only 12 episodes long and Naraku just decided to become a good guy in episode 11 or something. Some may call that lousy writing but oddly enough I didn't really mind it in this scenario. I was kinda disappointed by some way too obvious reveals that I felt were held back too long like Albus being Sorena's granddaughter(and especially a girl in the first place) and Thirteen also being "Him." But considering how Thirteen was treated after I guess it didn't really matter.

And there were a couple of nice moments I wasn't expecting. That magic vial Thirteen gave to Mercenary being one. I thought for sure they were gonna forget about that until near the end and it was gonna play out as one final villainous macguffin that would need to be dealt with, but no. Instead Mercenary actually successfully used it to free Zero, so that was nice. I was also glad that wolf-guy ended up being a good guy. His design stuck out to me right at the beginning and I was glad we got a lot of him instead of just a one-off appearance. Although I will add in hindsight they probably should have taken out him owning the sex slaves in his first appearance if they were trying to make him at all sympathetic. But then considering they managed to even make Thirteen a good guy by the end I guess that's a relatively minor complaint. The relationship between Mercenary and Zero was fairly nicely executed. Though part of me feels like the series literally could have ended right after that episode 6 cliffhanger had Mercenary not left and patched things up with Zero then and there. I mean thinking about it logically the rest of the events could have been avoided after that. Zero would still curbstomp Thirteen, then they could all just carry out Albus' plan without the added hassle of having to deal with the rest of the Zero Mages, the end. 7 episodes, 8 tops is all that would be needed I'd imagine. Again it comes back to how oddly it all played out. But I guess I'm willing to overlook it since, as said, Zero and Mercenary's relationship was sweet to watch play out as it did anyway. But I guess I'm rambling at this point so uh yeah. Pretty alright little series. Generous 7/10.

Oh, I also love that the show randomly gave us a shot of the dog with the kids in the very last episode. Wasn't expecting closure on that front. :D

That was a great episode. A good final battle and a nice fulfilling conclusion for a good and entertaining story.

I'm interested in what Thirteen will be doing from now on as he is no longer the sorcerer of state. It was nice to see Zero and Mercenary walking of to another adventure together at the end, though I'm not sure whether that means there will be a season 2 (though I hope there is one).

Overall I would give this 7/10. I felt it had a rocky start but developed character and personality as it progressed. It wasn't perfect but it was still fun and entertaining.

Yep, that was a satisfying ending. Zero and Mercenary have a new journey ahead of them (And poor him, having to wait for awhile to return to his human form lol) Albus is the new head of the Wenias and Dog-face his subordinate. I enjoyed watching this show as a whole. Might like it if it receives another season... Zero and Mercenary's next journey to unknown lands getting rid of magic should be fascinating.

One thing that annoyed me is that in the beginning, Zero said she could restore Mercenary to a human form yet at the end he's still a Beast because now, conveniently, her magic is weaker yet in the beginning she said it was a simple matter. To me, she honestly had no intention of restoring him, she just used him or she wants him to remain a beast. He's taken a lot of crap throughout the anime and even saved the world but he still got lied to and hosed.

The ending was so dump I cant comprehend it:

It not only destroyed the message the show wanted to deliver but was also incredibly lazy writing:

You have this big theme of racism and how to overcome it in the show yet their final solution of how to stop racism towards witches is to steal magic in the whole kingdom indescrimanatly?
THAT IS THE MOST STUPID GHING YOU COULD COME UP WITH AS A WRITER.

Why? So wheres the differnce to that and in killing all witches?
Right none the main problem is not solved AND much knowledge is forever lost.
Makes no sense.
I really had sympathy for the order who tried to stop this stupid main character to execute their nonsensical plot plan.

As mentioned above its very lazy writing compare it to code geass where the protagonist faces a similar problem with racism and hate:

They solved it clever and understandable and didnt just ban everyones powers.

Imagine being a witch who studied magic for a 100 years and then getting it taken away from you because some snot nosed protagonist can't come up with a better plan.

This is utterly retarded.

Yeah I really like this series. Its such a nice series to just sit back, chill, and watch a good anime. Its one of those re-watchable anime I can just get started no matter my mood.

Its still crazy to think they made an entire anime out of one light novel volume. Magical Girl Raising Project did the same and when I went past the anime I realised how much more content there was. Sadly with this series theres no english release so I cant experience all that new content of Zero and the Mercenary going on adventures. I would have killed to see their romance progress.

Speaking of them, they're so cute. Its a shame Zero never gave him a kiss on the cheek like Albus did. Oh well, they're cute af. This is my 3rd re-watch and definitely not my last.

i REALLY enjoy mercenary and zero and their relationship

i don't really care about that girl pretending to be a boy, or her servant that was searching for her. and i most definitely don't like thirteen ("i'm a good guy even though i do evil things and kill lots of people")

i feel vindicated when i said i thought that one witch was a girl/sounded like a girl even though they were being portrayed as a boy

this is a 6.0/7.0 out of 10. it was a 7.0 for most of it, but the final few episodes made it drop. i guess ill go with 6/10 final

Pretty predictable as far as plot. Way too many people attracted to little girls. Dumb resolution where the villain becomes a mass murderer for his sister and when his sister says "I never asked you to do any of that" the villain just says "Oh, my bad, I'll just stop now". Some of it was enjoyable but it was mostly nonsense, 5/10.

This finale really surprised me honestly, I never expected Thirteen to be reasonable and help out with the magic erasure plan, he got beat up and probably suffered emotional damage in the process but he was a big part of why the plan succeeded. And once all was said and done, Mercenary is still stuck as a beast person and apparently even more so than before lol, I knew he’d stay a beast person since I watched the sequel/spin-off before this but it happened differently than I thought, I was thinking he’d end up wanting to stay a beast person on his own but no he still wanted to be a human and I respect that lol.

And now Zero and Mercenary are off on another journey to solve more issues that Zero started, I was surprised to not see them developed more romantically by the end but this was still pretty satisfying imo. And yet another surprise, Thirteen didn’t really get punished much after all he’s done, it doesn’t upset me really that he didn’t but it’s not what I was expecting lol.

And that was Grimoire of Zero, definitely a fun watch even after already having some of it spoiled by watching “Dawn of the Witch” first earlier this year. Had an interesting plot with good twists despite them not being hard to see coming, and the characters were good overall, I especially think Mercenary and Thirteen stood out as great ones. I liked Zero a lot too of course but her drama arc kinda took her down a peg for me, but she still gets a lot of points for being cute and funny a lot of the time lol. And the OP and ED were a very nice combo.

And as for which show I prefer, this or the sequel/spin-off, even though the story is better in this one I kinda have them at the same level, neither were particularly amazing but were fun watches all the same. I wouldn’t mind seeing more shows within this world come around, it’s an interesting one for sure.
