| Well first of all it's an isekai. And then it's also a revenge power fantasy. And then it has cute girls. It makes sense that a lot of people would watch it, as people tend to eat up any slightly above average isekai |

| The most overrated isekai out there, I mean I love isekai and was ready to enjoy shield hero, but when I watched I just found how badly written some of the characters were, like Malty is an antagonist with no motive behind her actions, she is evil just because there needs to be a bad guy right? Also the other heroes are completely useless they don’t even serve the purpose of an antagonist they just sort of exist and do dumb stuff. Also after the problem with the false accusations gets resolved it just became boring, there was nothing really interesting during that second half. |

| Unique anime aren't really popular, tho. Shield Hero is popular because it's isekai and power fantasy. It starts off with the underdog MC along with the revenge plot. Add a cast full of cute girls which serve as pseudo harem and you got everything you need. |

| "Those people" gave it a lot of publicity with their outrage, because MC is being falsely accused of sexual assault and since anime started airing right after that whole Kavanough drama, implying that false sexual assault allegations sometimes do happen was a direct threat to their narrative. |

( @Abysswalker204 if you think shield is the best you migth enjoy a couple of these too👍👍) So ya compared to Grimgar's writing, characters and production, shield hero doesn't hold a candle, it isn't as honest or fun as Zero no Tsukima nor is it even remotely as dark or cruel as 'now and then, here and there', but it deserves credit for being pretty alrigth👍👍. Moral is never let hype colour your views, just watch what your interested in, regardless of others opinions, the properties age or hype💪💪. |

| Nothing really unique about it per se. The controversy put it in a lot of people's radar and isekai as a whole is trendy rn (and has been for a while). Personally, I really liked the dynamics of the main characters. They worked really great together. The zero-to-hero redemption story was satisfying as well. Also has good production value and a great OST. |

| Because it entails what's popular nowadays. Isekai, RPG, sympathetic characters, lolis, furry cute things, underdog story, superhero powers, magic, high fantasy. The show does not feel unique neither original to me, but it's good quality product and fun to watch. |

All of those are just ingredients that many will gobble up regardless of quality. Then the topping on the cake is the first episode. Which was ~50 minutes, as opposed to 20 minutes. And the episode subverted expectations people had about an isekai like this, by including false rape allegations, revenge porn and the MC purchasing a slave. Which means they established a somewhat memorable first episode. Sadly it doesn't actually do much with these concepts, but it's because of this first episode that it got a large amount of attention. And that's all it really needs. Even if the rest is forgettable and mediocre. For instance, School Days is only popular because of its ending. Despite being a very mediocre and forgettable harem if we exclude the ending. One episode is all it really takes. It doesn't need to be good or bad, just memorable and it will spread like wildfire and gain popularity. |

Show got huge free marketing because ANN and anitubers complained about it, spreading awareness to people so they checked the show out. The show has a really compelling first 7-12 episodes that got people to stick around and keep watching it (whereas most shows fail to retain most viewers), hence the show kept getting talked about. |
