The OP and ED are both pretty good. This was an okay first episode I'm definitely interested. It felt extremely abrupt when Boogiepop said the danger was over and that she was leaving. I mean obviously it's not but still.

Hmm, I guess if I had to say something I'd say the episode was strange but in a way kinda unique too.

We got introduced to Boogiepop and some myths behind him(her?) but what makes this episode stand out as strange to me is that Boogiepop initially says that the world is in danger and later towards the end, he(she?) says that it isn't anymore and it's been taken care of.

What also stood out to me as strange was that Takeda seemed far too close to Boogiepop by the end of the episode even call him(her?) a friend.
When you add the gruesome scenes that are sporadically flashed of the episode it gets even more strange, it's almost as though we're seeing the prologue and the epilogue at the same time.

I guess we'll learn more later but I'm looking forward to more of this. Looks like this will be an interesting show just as I thought after watching the PV's. :)

I have the feeling the last scene actually happened much later and is the final which would explain Boogiepop's and Takeda's behavior

I really liked this first episode. The whole atmosphere along with the music is really nice! The OP and ED are pretty good too.

The characters seems alright as well. Touka is obviously the most interesting out of all of them. Well IMO. I’m still pretty confused as to what she’s supposed to be and what this monster at the school is. I’m sure it’ll all get properly explained though.

Either way, this was a nice start to the winter season!

I love how Boogiepop is animated so that their movements don't come off as quite human. Also their VA, Yuuki Aoi, was the absolute star of the episode. She voices a lot of both male and female characters but the way she pulled off Boogiepop's mysterious, genderless voice was fantastic.

(commentary after watching episode two, posted on the other thread)

I love this adaptation so far, and as a fan of the light novels I can say this is a little fast paced and some details were cut out but is overall an amazing anime so far.

To those who are confused about this adaptation, it's much like steins;gate where it begins very confusing and makes sense in the end. You're not supposed to know anything in the novel either at the beginning, the only difference is that the anime reveals a ton of shit without context in episode 2 (episode 1 was adapted properly but with some anime original content interspliced). If they were adapting it properly, many would be complaining that it is too slow. It's not sunk, and I enjoyed it, I think Shingo just wanted to make a splash as much as possible before getting into the meat of what makes Boogiepop so great and unique. (It's a classic after all)

The series will make more sense as it progresses, give it a chance. The point of Boogiepop is it's an ensemble cast and a story told out of order with the core driving force being the intrigue behind the narrative and piecing together the mystery as it's presented to you.

Surprised that this show is around 7, I can't believe how dumb some people can be.

Besides this is not confusing at all so far (ep 2).

I don't like that much the new art, but the dialogs, characters and introduction were great and world is pretty interesting. I can't wait for more.

This is certainly intriguing. I will admit that I don't understand a lot of what's going on but, I'm assuming, a lot will be explained as things progress. I'm kind of shocked at some of the bad animation, considering it's Madhouse, but it's not unwatchable. The sound direction is phenomenal. Looking forward to see where this goes.

Thanks to the people who summarize the episode every commenter just watched within the discussion forum cause I'm not quite sure what I just watched for this series.
Op/ed are nice, this feels slow but I'm going to give it a couple episodes. I see a couple of connecting threads that feel relevant to the story and its themes. The students are not only at a stressful time in their lives (end of high school, exams, schools and careers) but are having several strict rules imposed upon them.

I've seen some fictional high schools in anime where students aren't allowed to have a job, and also read that the often intense focus on club activities is to mimic the atmosphere of future careers or work where employee loyalty is crucial-hence maybe why schools wouldn't want students to be working at another place than their school? But no dating seems pretty harsh, especially since Takeda and Miyashita were engaging in the most casual level of interaction.

So some girls can't handle it and are presumed to have run away, one student reacts violently. I imagine they might also feel a lot of pressure to succeed, and fear what might happen if the fail. That person that boogiepop tries to help could have been homeless or at least without a job or struggling to make a living.

The moment from when Takeda is talking to those girls about the most recent disappearance to when boogiepop made their last appearance on the rooftop felt pretty sudden. I think it's kind of interesting how Kirima Nagi was the subject of all this gossip but when we meet her she seems normal?

Overall the episode feels like a bunch of jumbled bits that have the potential to connect and make sense later

The two things I didn't want to happen happened - the setting is moved the present instead of the 1990s (the then-present in which the book was set) and because of the setting change and the art direction it lacks visual continuity with Boogiepop Phantom - eg. Phantom's sepia filter and analog noise. Otoh, I actually like the more contemporary character designs and the OST is good and kinda similar to Phantom.

OP is nice too.

Wow. Aoi Yuuki really sounds like a completely different person when she's using her deep voice...

Man-eaters. It's all coming back to me...

Suema...I think I remember her...

Oh Kirima Nagi. Now I remember her!

The art isn't the greatest, but it does set the mood right without using much background music and no monologues. I'm hooked. I'm going to have to get used to the series in daylight though. It doesn't have that dark and shady art and ambient sound that the original had, so I hope they can still deliver the mystery well. Well since this is double the episodes of the original Boogiepop, they got more time to develop the story. Alright then, let's get Boogiepopping!

The new OP and ED songs don't come close to the old ED song Shin-seiki Maruhi Club.

The show itself is pretty mediocre so far. And probably confusing to those who know nothing of the novels or at least haven't watched the old show.

The opening theme was catchy. As expected of MYTH & ROID.
Wow everything still remained so confusing after the first episode (I have no idea about Boogiepop series whatsoever). The world settings itself is still pretty vauge.
Visuals are fine. Fits the atmosphere of the show. They did great job with background musics, pulls you deep into the story.
Ending theme is beautiful too.
I'm really loving this show.

Felt pretty whatever to me. The art direction was bland (the OP was the low point, that bit where there's Touka's reflection on the mirrors and you can't see her eyes made me cringe a little), the plot felt rushed, and the characters didn't catch my attention. There were also those weird pauses during some of the conversations???
Some of the music is good though.

Ehhh, ok I’ll avoid talking about the bad animation, which is something I wasn’t expecting from Mad House

This episode had some weird direction if you ask me, not in a good way tho, plus there are many things I don’t get (I think that’s a problem of the manga) and well, all in all, quite a a bad-average episode.
Hopefully it will get better

The animation and art style is really good and from what I saw in the intro the action scenes will be really exciting but this is Mad house after all.

I feel like this show is trying to tell a mystery story mixed with a unique look on mental illnesses and it's doing a good job on the "unique look on mental illnesses" part but it's doing a not so good job on the "mystery story" part however it's just the first episode and mysteries are supposed to get clearer as the story progresses and are supposed to be solved in the end of said story.

Overall I'm most likely gonna keep watching this show until the end and I'll probably like it.

Interesting first episode. I'm not totally sure what I think about it yet, but my first impressions are mixed.

They did one of the things I was worried they would do, which is cut back on the surrealism in favor of a modern psychological seinen vibe. Not that the cinematography was "bad" or not occasionally interesting, but I liked how disjointed the original show was and was hoping to see that done here with a bit more polish.

Boogiepop is also a little... idk, not as mysterious I guess, though this is just the first episode so maybe there'll be some more twists to uncover.

On the plus side, the overarching theme of the original seems to have been retained, in terms of critique on the modern "civilized" world and grappling with female relations/psychology. The music is really cool as well. Hopefully we won't be following only the single protagonist, Takeda, but I doubt that will be the case. Excited for now to see where this leads...

Ia m going into the anime with no idea about the Boogiepop light novel and have not watched the Boogiepop Phanton that came out in 2000 but I would say that the show gave me an impression of of being unique, mysterious and intriguing. The story seems to be told on a non-linear way which I'm hoping everything will turn out good on the later episodes.

Also love the OP and the ED songs.

Let me make my opinion clear:
First episode got me very confused, it felt like too much events were rushed (compressed literally) but good opening and ending though, all this description applies to Tokyo ghoul and this freaks me out! The one thing that prevent me from dropping this series is because i have faith in Madhouse adaptation, it's not fucking Pierrot, i liked the animation too, similar to Parasyte which i adore.

The only good thing really was the OP and maybe the ED. The content within the episode itself was probably the most boring shit I've seen in a while, with the addition of a bland main character that also manages to look like the most generic MC there is.

The animation also sometimes looked like they didn't want to work on the series:

The show starts with Takeda, a young student, waiting for Miyashita, a girl that didn’t arrive to their date; when he was about to leave, a man in very bad conditions appeared between the crowd, a mysterious girl (looks like Miyashita) appeared to comfort the man. Another day, Takeda went to school and asked about Miyashita, he couldn’t get anything. He met the mysterious girl again at the school’s rooftop, she’s called Boogiepop and she describes herself as kind of multiple personality of Miyashita, that only appears when something is not right (apparently there’s a monster that eat people in the school). Boogiepop appeared again saying that the monster is no more there and that she’s gonna disappear, but they met Nagi Kirima going out of the school (a girl threatened another girl in the school).

I’m very confused, at first, the show is not clear about if is real or magic or spirits. I thought that Boogiepop was a spirit, not a person. Boogiepop’s appearance is dangerous then, which means that something is not ok. There are some things true, some girls disappeared, Miyashita and Boogiepop share the same body and Takeda is the only one that knows the truth about Boogiepop. I don’t think that the monster is gone, it will be interesting to solve this mystery.
