The official website of animation studio Production I.G announced on Friday that Masamune Shirow's Koukaku Kidoutai: The Ghost in the Shell (The Ghost in the Shell) manga will receive a new anime adaptation. Director Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed Alpha) will co-direct the anime. More information regarding the new anime will be revealed at a later time.

Ghost in the Shell has previously inspired a number of anime adaptations, including two films in November 1995 and March 2004 by Mamoru Oshii, two TV anime seasons, a film in March 2011, as well as several OVAs. A four-part prequel movie Ghost in the Shell: Arise premiered between June 2013 and September 2014, and was later merged into a TV anime in Spring 2015.

A new film following the prequel premiered in June 2015. Dreamworks and Paramount Pictures produced a Hollywood live-action adaptation that premiered worldwide on March 30 and 31. The original cast members of the Ghost in the Shell anime film adaptation will reprise their roles in the Japanese dub version.

I don't get it, hasn't everything already been adapted already? Why do a remake? The movie and tv series still looks good even for today anime standard.

Instead of remaking series, why don't these studios adapt series that hasn't get any adaptation yet? This series is being milked, but since it is a cult classic it gets a free pass.

I understand the feeling of people's "HYPE" of this news but I was in the middle of watching the season 1!

Anyway, if Production I.G. were to make this, which also planned to give us a remake of LOGH also then yeah we can expect this on winter 18 maybe or perhaps Fall 18 for sure...

Definitely feeling some hype for this.

In regards to Arise.....its not that bad. The main issue imo is it is clearly not as good as the original movies or SAC. I still liked watching it though.

Hopefully with the director of the SAC series co-directing this, this new adaption will live up to franchise name, and maybe even surprise us. I'm defiantly looking forward to this.

I watched the Movie of GiTS but not Standalone Complex... I heard Arise was pretty meh on that end... though I'll go and look forward to it.

Wait why are people complaining about Shinji Aramaki btw? I don't really know, if anyone can clarify as to why that would be helpful.

Wow, guess I should finally get around to watching the movie, and the 2nd season of Stand Alone Complex.

Good to hear Kenji Kamiyama is involved, but why are people flipping out about Shinji Aramaki's involvement. I haven't seen anything he's done so I can't say, but is he really that bad?

I love Maaya Sakamoto but I have a hard time imagining anybody else in the role of the Major.

He directed a bunch of average hollywood-ish popcorn flicks and most of his works are pure CGI.
He is pretty much Paul WS Anderson of anime.

"Director Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed Alpha) will co-direct the anime."

YES I AM READY.

Kamiyama Kenji hinted at this a while back on a tweet, and I'm glad it has finally been announced! I'd love if they brought back the key staff members as well; especially Kanno Yoko for the music. <3 (The VAs would be nice...!)

This was brought on by the renewed interest in GitS following the Hollywood film (and various GitS projects in Japan?), I'm sure.
Can't say I hate it the live-action for reviving my favorite franchise! \(^o^)/ ARISE doesn't count.

And the LotGH remake later this year too! (Whether it will be good or not, we'll see.) Thanks Production IG! <3

Hopefully, a new storyline, and not a remake. Either way, with Kenji Kamiyama, this will be better than Arise. With the original VAs too. Now for Kanno/Kawai to hop on board, and I am ready.
