Eh, I don't really understand why everyone keep bashing poor Naho - I was once in almost exact same position and situation, and I can completely relate to her. Being insecure, shy and clueless teenage girl. Except my future boyfriend was more like Suwa and grabbed my hand, wasn't just standing there like Kakeru >:D

Hagita continues being my second favourite character in this series - he's one of my all time favourite boke. Too bad he doesn't get more screentime, he was always cracking me up :D

Btw, top faces of this episode:

Pretty terrible, yup.

Man, I don't mind dense characters, but Naho is so dense that its hard to follow, and her dense'ness is clearly a plot device to advance the story in certain a expecific direction...For example, in this episode her dense'ness was there so that she would rely on her friends more and set the whole "everyone got a letter" reveal in the end...

I'll bet Kakeru got a letter also, and it tells him to make sure Naho and Suwa get together. Otherwise it makes no sense that a red-blooded teenager would not want to date the girl he loves. Unless he was gay, but I don't see any suggestion of that in the anime. (Haven't read the manga).

How could Kakeru get a letter also, if his self, ten years in the future never existed because of him committing suicide. Your theory makes no sense, lol. And yes, Kakeru's not wanting to go out with Naho does make sense, because Kakeru thinks going out with Naho would burden her, which reflects what Naruse really feels about himself, not good at all. He even said it in the ep man lol. Wait, are we even watching the same show? xd

Naho is so stupid omg, i feel so bad about Kakeru when he is talking to her, she is like a 2 y.o baby.
So they all received those letters, if that wasn't obvious enough xD

Naho and Kakeru at times make me want to rip my hair out. In the nurses office Kakeru refusing to date Naho and the pathetic excuse had me so pissed. Her falling into him (facepalm) and her reaction; what are you 6 years old?? Being dense as a pile of frozen shit with the hand holding (twice!!) yet at the same time didnt he just tell her he just wants to remain friends and nothing more?

I feel like the whole suicide and letter storyline could've had the potential to be incredibly powerful but these two main characters are just ruining it for me. Suwa and the other two are the only ones with common sense it seems.

Naho is so fucking dense. She sorely needs to get hit by that sports bag upside the fucking head. She needs to snap out of it. I have never met anyone in my entire life who is that fucking dense.

So they all have letters, I somehow suspected it. I wonder if Kakeru also wrote to himself something along the lines of "I think I might kill myself" but he's still so depressed he ignored it or something.

so liek Kakeru holds out his hand and omg i rlly don't know what he wants!
Also notice Suwa's face when she's saying that. He's done.

Naho seemed offensive in the manga, probably because I didn't have to hear her voice, but here i'm just wishing for someone to slap her. (Which sadly won't happen.)

That wasn't so surprising. I was hoping the story could go and reveal that Kakeru might have receive the letter from his future-self (before he die) too. Now that would be a twist, Lol. This is not a spoiler, just my random thoughts. Non-LN, non-manga, etc, here.

Omg... I know Naho isn't exactly the brightest but up til this point I still found her actions and thoughts within reasonable limits. How exactly could she not have understood his outstretched hand??? It just sounds like the writer ran out of ideas to further misunderstandings because this is just downright dumb. I totally get everyone hating on Naho for this one. But I detest whoever wrote this scene more.

OBVIOUSLY he couldn't get one from when he's dead but that doesn't preclude him from writing a letter before he kills himself! :shakes head: His explanation for not dating Naho makes absolutely no sense. And time has changed, but not entirely; in this timeline it's totally possible that he might kill himself because he feels like as long as he's alive, Naho is too in love with him to partner up with Suwa, hence, in this timeline he might write such a letter to prevent that from happening. Heck, everyone else has a letter, why not him too?

they all got a letter!!! did they all got the letter at the same time? if so, then why did they invite the dude in the very first ep?
even if they did not know that each of them got a letter, if all of them were a little hesitant to invite the new dude, then I doubt the new dude will force himself to be with a group he barely knew on his very first day in a new school... he'll be at home with his mother

someone else always have what you want, but it usually means nothing to them...

I lost it the moment she didn't realize he wanted to hold hands-twice.

Really...I get it that she's supposed to be shy and socially awkward but that's too extreme. Her choices are questionable most of the time. Also, the animation was pretty annoying this episode/END OF RANT

What I'm looking forward the most is to see what happens with Kakeru and his depression. The other friends are entertaining as well, especially Glasses-Kun!

Basically everyone but Naho and Kakeru know how to handle basic interactions towards people you like, which is just as frustrating watching as it was reading it in the manga. Well not everyone can be perfection incarnate like Suwa.

How can Naho be so dense? I don't even know what words to use exactly, because dense isn't enough to describe how much of a klutz she was in this episode. I get that she's insecure and shy... that's not really the problem. This time around, what she did was beyond hopeless.

Yeah I agree.. It started well with the first episodes. But tbh, this isnt the only episode with bad animation. It all got even worse, especially from episode 5>now. Sucks because its hard to take it seriously when they look like retard sometimes :( never heard of that animation studio, probably an amateaur one. Weird thing is that they got to work with Orange, which is supposed to be a great manga..

Ora(Cri)nge, Naho is so dense.
Don't like the fact that everyone received a letter from their future selves, I mean really you can't use the rest of the cast in a natural way without giving them future tips? I thought it was a very nice twist to have Suwa get a letter from his future self since he's married to Naho and very much related to the main love story here and made him a lot more relevant as a character but now you get a letter, he gets a letter, everyone gets a letter.

Finally took the time to watch episode 8. After Suwa came out and said he had a letter I kinda figured they all would have them -- especially after thinking back that the girls kept telling Naho to 'stop hiding things from us'

Still, great episode overall. The scenes of Naho and Kakeru as well as again Naho and Suwa being superheroes is still just right and makes sense. The camera work, OST, and for god's sake the LOOKS Kakeru gave in this episode were so emotional. I still don't know how you can ask what someone holding their hand out means! For a second I thought there was going to be a little smooch there but I guess I was reaching too far, huh? IMO easily one of the best shows out for the summer (haters can go back to watching Ace Attorney)...can't wait for the next episode.

Only thing I sort of fear is Suwa said something like he was sorry he couldn't get Naho and Kakeru together....and that he couldn't do it. Maybe this is because he knows he and Naho are together in the future and he wants that to remain...?? Interesting nonetheless.

Well naho is soo socially awkward and romantically inexperienced..and they try to make her cute about this but on the contrary she makes me cringe:/ but the real question that nobody's asking is : do naho and suwa know that they have a baby? It seems that they have consciousness of their 26 years old shelves but there isn't any mention...

Of course Naho is an "emotional cripple," as some of you put it. Part of the point of the show is her future self regretting being meek, timid and afraid to act on her feelings when she was 16. She's shy, inexperienced and self-conscious. Her gradual growth as an individual is one of the points of the show.

Continuing on the development of Naho, I believe that the pertinence of everyone having a letter isn't just saving Kakeru. I think that everyone having a letter and it being an eventual reveal to Naho is a part of her character development. She is slowly learning that she can rely on others and that, by doing so, she is not being a burden.

She and Kakeru are slowly teaching each other, while simultaneously learning for their own selves, that relying on others when you are in emotional distress does not make you a burden. It helps you to become stronger and strengthens bonds.

Edit:
Also, keep in mind, that she is trying to change her nature with the additional burden of trying to prevent another person's suicide. So not only is she terrified and socially inept but every decision that she makes... that weight is in the back of her mind. She is probably over-analyzing everything and agonizing over every little decision whether openly or subconsciously.

And Kakeru has already admitted to suicidal tendencies at this point. If it is a recurring thought in his mind, of course he wouldn't want to date Naho, if he truly cares about her. He sees himself as a time bomb.

God damn shoujo tropes, God fucking damn. This is why I try to avoid most shows who have the shoujo tag on them, because no matter how hard you try to be less artificial, you end up being more artificial than a computer(if that even makes a sense, because it's on the same level of how some characters act in these types of shows, senselessly). While the show is good for most of the time, but God damn characters like Naho are quite hard to watch, because of how shallow they're made to be, without any sort of personality and used as plot devices(I guess that's something at least?).
So knowing that, due to her obliviousness another chain of events are going to happen, in which they'll try to "save" Kakeru from committing suicide because of Naho's ineptitude. Then there's dissonance between what Kakeru said during the hospital scene and how he acted afterwards; on top of all this, him saying that he loves Naho, and she being there when he says that, the only conclusion you can come to when someone who has already said what they feel about you and offer their hand, is that they want to have something more with you, unless your emotional prowess is that of an 5 year old.

It's a good show, but Nahos' character is really making things hard to watch due to her structure and how inept she's made out to be, always staying in the background(socially anxious), withdrawn and etc. At least the other characters have some sort of personality to them(Kakeru is the same as Naho, imo) and aura to them that makes them interesting to watch, unlike Naho and Kakeru.

This.

Although there are some potentially good (Albeit somewhat stretched) explanations for these things that people have already posted on here, overall they still just come across as awful/forced/convenient narrative points in an otherwise interesting overall story. Even if you ignore Kakeru and Naho's social ineptitude, the fact that the entire group had letters (especially Suwa who likely had the next most detailed letter after Naho's) and still invited Kakeru with such vigor despite being warned otherwise is beyond crazy!

The decision to ignore the letters also seems incredibly nonsensical - Why can Naho not realise that she can still use the letter as an early warning system of sorts without it entirely dictating her life/decisions!

I still have a lot of faith in this series going forward though, heck I'd watch just to see Suwa continue to boss as one of the best bros of all time!

I get it that characters can be somewhat oblivious, but Naho is completely oblivious to the point where her future self had to tell her what she overlooked. She's also very hesitant and self doubtful. It's her flaw to keep to herself so much and it makes me worried about how it'll affect Kakeru because he needs support and Naho really doesn't know how to go about it. I mean he just wanted to hold hands like wtf. And she kept asking why he wanted to. It complicates things a lot. They both like each other so why wouldn't she hold hands with him. Just though Naho should put her big girl pants on.

Yes, that's what I think. To him, as someone who still actively has thoughts of suicide, he probably feels like it's "defined." The crux of the story is changing his heart and changing the way he thinks... he needs to learn to see himself as someone who's not eventually going to cave into these feelings. I think right now, he is so unsteady, he believes that these feelings and urges will never go away.
