At a recent live drawing demonstration, Yoshitoshi Abe mentioned the revival of the Despera anime project, originally put on hiatus, at around 7:35 of the video. The revival comes with another director showing an interest in the project after the previous director, Ryuutarou Nakamura, passed away.

It would be such an amazing experience to finally have Despera come to life. I won't hold my breath, but let's hope for the best.

I've forgotten all about this after assuming it was stuck in purgatory. On top of that, it's been a while since I've heard anything new with regards to ABe. Regardless of how this turns out with a new director, it's a relief to know that it's still kicking.

Very fond of his art. I'm glad he's stayed consistent with this style over all these years.

A question for fans of the series, what would be the most appropriate amount of episodes to adapt this if it's a TV series?

The premise sounds very interesting and I'm hoping this comes out sometimes this year.

Well

How about we get Hamasaki in here again?

I don't understand why he took Akame (probably, a close friend of his hated the manga so he decided to fuck it up), but it's time to see him shine again.

I believe it is an anime original project, if this is wrong, I hope someone will take it upon themselves to correct me.

Approximate episode count and even the name of the potential new director hasn't been released, though I'm probably just as curious as you are.

From what I can find, it's based on a Japanese science fiction poem written sometime around the turn of the 20th century. The author was apparently an Anarchist, Nihilist, Dadaist, poet, and monk, so this combined with ABe is...Well...It could either be something amazing or something really crazy. Maybe both.

Did a quick search with Google so not sure if how much of this is right but there are apparently 13 graphic novel chapters also related to this including the prologue/introduction. There's a column on this site.

And additionally, the premise is something like this:
The story centers around a 14 year old girl named Ain, who often builds devices despite the lack of scientific background for them. The sci-fi alternative period story is set in Tokyo during the Taishō era in 1922, one year before the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake.

Abe was a fantastic director. Too bad he died of cancer years ago. Anyway i'm looking forward to see what's the new director capable of bringing to the table.

Wow, these are great news, I mean low long has it been since they put the project on hold? 3 years? 4 years? It already feels like a lifetime ago.
I'm a big fan of Yoshitoshi Abe's art and I'm looking forward to see his unique character designs again in animated form.
