The fall color was beautiful. Also I liked the painting on a wall of the bathhouse.

The second half was dramatic. A shocking truth was revealed. Is it why Yajiro had started to live in seclusion?

FROGBRO!!! HOW COULD YOU!!!???
Things just got a lot more complicated. How is Mom going to react when she learns about this...

Also that exchange between Yasaburo and Akadama when the latter suspects the former of having a thing for Benten was gold

Hey, look at that, after 6 episodes, they decide to actually give us something noone knew about dad's death in the 7th episode... I still think the anime's description is misleading. I've been waiting for this like 4 episodes back.

Meh~

Wow, this episode was really something.
I didn't expect that - I thought we'd get an episode about the Nise-emon elections, and here we got a brilliant comedy, and then suddenly it changed into drama.
I wonder if we're going to see the frog brother in his tanuki/human form?

Btw the beginning of the episode - this anime is just so beautiful:

Wow, so it was Yajiro's fault that his dad got boiled. I wonder why he just up and left him though, that's what I'm trying to figure out, even though he was drunk, I'm pretty sure that he knew that he was with his dad. Guess I'll just have to find out next week.

Oh, noes!...

I still think it was a combination of unfortunate events that lead to Souichirou's death and his and Yajirou's carelessness were only part of the whole. I will not jump on the second brother, though - obviously, he took the blame and sentenced himself for life. If I am to believe their father's greatness, I'd say it is a wasteful punishment - life is what it is, shit happens, live on.
So maybe, Yajirou turned to eien frog, Benten cries because she didn't know the tanuki she had for the meeting was Souichirou... I wonder if Kaisei has a similar role and hides like she does because of that.

Yaichirou was awesome in this episode, especially in the end.

Love this family *_*

So it was Yajirou's fault for leaving their dad behind, but still was their dad too drunk to transform and escape the cage? From what I saw in the last episode he was sober enough, or is there is something more going on?

This show's logic is all over the place. Why is it the brother's fault that their father was eaten? From what we saw, he could have easily escaped but chose not to do so because of some honour crap.
Don't get me wrong, I like the show, it's beautiful and the characters are interesting but sometimes their reasoning seems off.

Public Bath episode !! LOL
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

What Yajirou? So he felt bad about it and probably thought it was kind of his fault so he became a frog in the well? What a sad truth to learn :( But the first half of the episode was pretty entertaining, I love how sensei didn't want to take a bath, but the brothers take care of that. And the whole part with Ginkaku and Kinkaku was hilarious :D Yaichirou is awesome.

Well, so far the only people who have blamed him for it are:

1) the Ebisugawas, who want to make the Shimogamos look bad;
2) Yaichiro, who is either mad at his brother for having hidden this piece of information, or concerned about how this revelation will affect his chances of winning the election (or both);
3) Yajiro, who feels disproportionately guilty for the whole thing.

Neither of these parties can assess what has happened impartially, and, as far as we know, none of them knows anything about the father's actions in captivity (and even if the Ebisugawas do, it might be in their interest to pretend otherwise), so as far as they know Soichiro may well have gone straight into the pot without ever regaining consciousness.

Shocking revelation. 0_________0

I don't know if I should trust what Ebasagasawa mentioned about Souichiro. It could be that they caused his death and not Yajirou. Since they want the Nise-emon title so much that they'd do anything. He blames himself for their father's death so he stays in the well to reflect?

In the previous episode. Hotei mentioned that Souichirou fulfilled his role as dad and raised them well. So he had no regrets when the time he got eaten by Friday Fellows.

Yajirou was not at fault, but he could easily be turned into a scapegoat.

As Ebisugawa pointed out, Yajirou keeping quiet made it appear that he had some complicity, and that could be used by the Ebisugawa's against Yaichiro with snide rumors. There has been some indication that the Tanuki community is under pressure from the Tengu (who have gotten worse since the Sensei was injured), and it was the father who was protecting the Tanuki, his untimely removal, the resulting split this caused, as well as Benten's rise (notice how scared all the Tanuki are of her), has caused a lot of fear in the Tanuki community, and people (and Tanuki) in such a situation are already looking for a scapegoat to blame, particularly one who already probably feels some guilt (I think we will find that Yajirou and his father departed hostilely, remember that the father had said it was an important meeting).

There is definitely something more going on. This revelation effectively absolves Benten of premeditated murder of Yasaburo's father. I suggested last week that the father's silencing himself when she woke up hinted that he knew who she was, but she didn't know who he was. So there is a lot more to be revealed there. I think this also shows why Benten "changed". Not a great thing to find out after the fact that you killed your best friend's (and quite possibly the person you love's) father.

This show is absolutely lovely. Every week a little bit more gets revealed, relationships become a little deeper and have greater nuance. Looking forward to seeing what next week brings.

Ginkaku and Kinkaku confront Yaichirou about the Nise-emon elections. And they have a trump card.

Souichirou's death wasn't as noble as it was thought out to be,turns out he was drinking with Yajirou, got drunk and got caught.Hopefully Ginkaku and Kinkaku don't release that information or Yaichirou's chance of becoming the Nise-emon are pretty much ruined. If they do hopefully the onfromation turns out to be wrong somehow.

Also beautiful scenery in the beginning

As for people wondering why his father didn't escape the cage, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to reveal your ability to shape shift as a tanuki. Sure he talked, but the professor himself wonders if it had really happened. We can see that the Friday Fellows have no idea about the tanuki and tengu world.

His father was sober when he got cooked so something must had happen.

1. The 2nd son drunk almost got caught -> father was not drunk and sacrifices himself.
2. Father was drunk got caught, sobered up somehow and talked to the professor, etc
3. Something else happen.

What an amazing episode. That look on Yasaburo's face when he was bull bracing for the wind was awesome.

Also did anyone else find what the professor revealed about the Tengu not knowing Benten was a human and not a Tengu a revelation as well? =o I had the impression they had known she was a human this whole time. I mean, she doesn't have wings and that seems hard to fake... xD

The bath scene and at the professor's place was amazingly funny I laughed a lot this whole episode. =3

Did anyone else find the dialogue between Yajirou and Yasaburou super cute? xD That brother is so amusing. =3

First as vonPeterhof said, nobody is saying it is the brother's fault except the Ebisugawas and for us the viewers we have yet to see what exactly happened. On the other hand, don't you think you were just too quick to reach conclusion? Is it that hard to believe that the father could easily escape even if he drank so much that he fell into a slump?? And I don't even see how you could even call it "the logic is all over the place". What I see is the logic has held very well so far in this show. The logic in your post seems to be a lot more over the place to be honest .

On a separate note, the red leaves in fall near the Arashiyama bridge (which you could see at the beginning of the episode) is absolutely gorgeous. It is worth a visit to Kyoto just to see that in real.

I'm sure other people saw this much earlier than me and I'm not sure if anyone else has brought this up earlier but I finally took a closer look at the kanjis that are displayed around the single characters at the start of the OP.

Seems like they are a motto, that fits the individual character (I guess since I could only really read the following four, the other being hard to read).

Yasaburou, 天下太平, tenka taiyou, peaceful and tranquil (uneventful); peace reigns over the land
Yajirou, 絶体絶命, zettai zetsumei, desperate situation; being driven into a corner
Benten, 天下無敵, tenka muteki, peerless; unequalled
Mother, 用意周到, youi shuutou, very careful; thoroughly prepared

Maybe someone else have the rest of the readings?

the episode ended so quickly as if I only watched it for 10 mins... amazing, purely amazing show and direction!

just as some of you pointed out, I doubt that Yajirou is seriously the one to blame. It does look that he's just been made a scapegoat. I wonder what has really happened. I bet Yajirou did get drunk, probably to the point of losing himself. So it's likely that when he sobered up, he learned that his father was caught and eaten. He probably doesn't remember what and how exactly happened, but he probably put all blame on himself and punished himself to living as a frog in a well. What else would you expect from the one with idiot's blood, indeed.

Souichirou looked pretty resolved to get eaten. I wonder why. I guess shape-shifting is prohibited in front of humans but I doubt he truly didn't have a chance to run away. Of course, the cage could've been way tighter than it was drawn... but nah, I guess he could've nevertheless sneak out somehow, e.g. as a snake or something like that. And I wonder why he didn't want to talk in front of Benten - trying to stay tanuki in front of a human or he didn't want to let her know that he's the father of the guy she studies together with at Akadama sensei's...

and then there's Kaisei and Shimogamo's mother about whom we know so little.
Ah, such an unexpected gem of the season, this show!

As I think about this, and some of the setups that have been made I suspect the big revelation is yet to come.
Of course that is rank speculation on my part, and since this is an original anime, we'll just have to wait for the end of the series to see how that plays out. But I'm still more interested in solving the mystery of Benten, rather than figuring out how the father died.

Hi gregthemaniac, I don't know the pronunciation, but I do know what they means.
elder brother, 乾坤一掷: bet on all you have, original in Chinese motto means bet on the whole country
little brother, 融通无碍: originally Japanese motto, 2 separate words in Chinese. Means do things or deal with people with no obstacles
sensei, 马耳东风: originally Chinese motto. means does not care about other people's words, or literally, consider other people's words as the wind (just flow away)
baka brothers:
迷惑万千, don't know where it comes from, I am guessing it means someone is capable to confuse or deceive a lot of people.
拍手喝彩: in Chinese it just means applaud and cheer. Here I am guessing it is used to describe one of the baka brother loves to applaud when the other succeeds a fraud.
雨过天晴: originally Chinese motto, literally means sun comes out after the rain, usually means politically brightness comes after the dark ages.
