Probably the best episode so far. I think it worked better because the narrative was more focused on a single character with a central event, and the drama was lower-key until the end.

Mariko has some serious abandonment issues. I wonder how such a condition could develop when her mother is so clearly involved. Probably a few friends weren't very forthright, so what we see is a distant personality exaggerated for dramatic effect.

I think it's pretty funny to think that, in a normal relationship, Nanako would casually mention she's bringing some friends to the party. Then, when Tomoko came, she would casually mention she helped bake some cookies. Mariko would be moved by the present and all three would be friends. No big deal.

I agree that this is the best episode yet.

It's really hard for me to hate Mariko, even when she is doing such manipulative things. She clearly has some emotional issues she is battling with, and it makes me feel pity for her. Although if my friend bit my ear out of anger... I would be a little pissed, not just ignore it.

I myself was in a situation very similar to this, and it can be quite frightening. I'm just glad Nanako actually said no this time, and didn't sleep over. She's actually making some decisions!

I fell so sorry for Mariko, she has never had any friends and then she gets one and becomes so jealous and obsessive. But i found her from the beginning a little bit creepy.
All in all, I´m curious, what´s gonna happend. I´ve read the manga, but there are only free volumes and in the anime, there are so many new plots. It makes the thing more interesting :D
I´m not a native english speaker and I´ve always got bad notes in English, so please, deal with my mistakes try to correct them in your thoughts during reading.

I actually didn't care much for this episode. I get what the story is trying to say here, but this was the first time I thought the drama felt like too much.

Yeah, threatening murder-suicide is going too far. I think throwing that fit at the end because Nanako wanted to leave is crazy enough to get the point across.

This has to be one of the best anime episodes I've seen in a while now. I once lived a very similar experience (much less dramatic obviously, but very much alike) and I truly think this episode and its narrative portrayed Mariko's attachment disorder (and borderline personality) at its finest.

Seriously, Mariko needs to get laid >D

I know she's kinda crazy and abusive, but I can't help but like her - I know she's just lonely! Before she had no one other than her mother, and now she finally made a friend, she's afraid to lose her and become alone again. It's unhealthy, sure, but maybe with Nanako, she'd be able to change in the future.

WHAT

WHAT WAS THAT

WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT

The characterization in this anime is frightening. Not in the sense of its characters being scary, but in terms of how intense the method of characterization is. Here's the interesting thing about Mariko: she was first portrayed as clingy and possessive, but she's made great strides and personal sacrifice to help Nanako. Granted, this was with regards to keeping her in the Sorority, which is, again, something I'd question why she even was in to begin with. That aside, she was helpful in warding off Aya and other bullies, so it wasn't that her presence was unwanted. It's just...holy crap. Everyone in this show has such deep-seated traumas. I swear, the most lucrative occupation in this world would be a psychologist. Too bad no one decided to monopolize that position.

i thought that for someone like mariko, her mother was also secretly crazy so the whole episode i was just waiting for her mom to snap and aid in her getting locked in the house. luckily, that was not the case. this is an all-mariko episode huh? a creepy episode fit for an equally as creepy lady. the way she said she truly wanted to be an adult makes me think that once she does become an adult, she's going to be a psycho femme fatale who may end up killing men lol. that would be rad.

i can't even imagine the tension once they go back to school, poor nanako is out running in the rain, probably without money seeing as she had no bag with her or any sense of direction. maybe she'll bump into someone and get home that way?
love the instrumental, jazz-ish version of the ending credits song. i replayed four times to listen to it again in the background. i really hope i'll be able to find this soundtrack somewhere.

Seems like Nanako finally sees Mariko's true obsessive colors. Even though she's kind of a lunatic, I can't fully blame her acting so weird seeing that she never had any friends due to her dad's job until Nanako became one. Hopefully she'll make a change for the positive and become a good friend in the end.

I was worried we wouldn't get a satisfactory explanation behind Mariko's obsessiveness, but holy shit that was amazing! Her abandonment issues + unparalleled desire to have a friend created a situation that brings joy to a psychology enthusiast such as myself — I can only commend the author, this is definitely one of the best psychology anime I've seen so far — and I'm only 8 episodes in!

I've been rewatching earlier episodes for fanfiction purposes, and I have to say, I'm rather impressed by the amount of detail put into the writing. The scene where Mariko is manipulating Nanako with the symbolism of girls playing tennis behind them was very clever.

Miya's true colors are finally beginning to show. Last episode showed her double nature towards Rei, and this episode we see how she is encouraging Aya to continue pressuring Nanako into leaving the sorority despite the fact that she wouldn't let Nanako leave.

As for Mariko, she has some issues that's for sure. She probably decided to become 'friends' with Nanako because she was only of the very few freshman who didn't already know her.

Holy shit, what a turn of events...

I always had a bad feeling about Mariko, but it looks like she really has issues. Nanako should've never went when Mariko bit her ear, that should've been an obvious red flag. She probably didn't want to let Nanako leave because she was abandoned by her father and thought she wouldn't come back... but still that was so fucked up. I hope she will have a happy ending at tho, I really feel bad for her.

The birthday party started suspiciously normal when you disregard the fact that a huge hotel room was rented for one guest. I was expecting some creepy shit ala "let me show you my collection of fingernails" right off the bat. Well, it didn't took that long before they shared a bath followed by homicide threats. It truly accelerated from 0 to 100 topped off by an insane nervous breakdown. I pity Mariko, the loneliness has driven her mad. Moreover, it's quite tough for her mom who seems like a supporting mother, yet also alone.

That was like a horror movie, so suffocating with danger literally in front of you without knowing when is going to explode in your face, thankfully Nanako got away before it got worse.

That Miya scene was great.

so good, i barely survived cuz the show is practically horror to me, im especially sensitive to the subject of bullying
i obviously despised and hated mariko at first... but now, seeing her go insane like this, first the aggession because shes so scared of losing nanako, then a panic attack at the end... i started to feel so bad for her
loneliness is killing her man, for real, thats why shes so insane, i legit developed empathy for her; i truly hope for some character development and that she gets to be happy
obviously she is a total narcissist but that surely can be due to trauma as well
at the table during the birthday nanako, mariko, and her mom sat so far apart - and my reading of this was that as much as the mom seemed close to mariko there is something unresolved there; maybe its even a class/work thing, yal know her father never been at her birthday either, she said that herself; maybe not only she was lonely all her life, maybe her family wasnt home either, so she was left absolutely alone and grew up to be a twisted person, but thats obviously due to trauma
god the fact that im actually writing a longer post means that this has impacted me for real
good show
i dont hate mariko anymore, now i understand why shes like this (even if i speculate a lot and everything will turn upside down next ep idk)

still i dont think mfs like aya, the main bully, will ever deserve my respect and empathy lmao shes legit evil and rotten, but i guess im open to be surprised

@viol3nty0uth I had a friend like that in Elementary school. We were best friends, and we constantly played together. Though one day, all the kids in our grade decided to all play tag. It was an all out crazy game and such chaotic fun. She was having fun and so was I. I guess I got too lost in it and was just really running with the other kids. Next thing I knew, I was being shamed for hurting my best friends feelings and leaving her to play with the other kids. She was crying and everything. It was so fucking weird. Though I felt bad, and I decided to ditch all the other kids and proclaim that I didn't need other friends. Looking back on it, it was a terrible mistake. She was manipulative as shit, and I didn't see it until I was older. I finally got sick of her shit and called her out for being trash, when I was in the 5th grade. Though she cried and people took her side. *eyeroll* I was ostracized, but whatever... Looking back on it, I regret leaving potential friends just to satisfy her. Funny thing is, years later, she also fell out with the same people that took her side, and she would constantly cycle new friends. Gee, I wonder why people would eventually get sick of her shit... /s

A part of me feels sorry for Mariko. She has no other friends, and outside of her parents, is alone in the world, just like me.

But, that being said, Mariko is a little too obsessive. Would I act that way if I were her? I'd like to say "no," but a part of me fears that I would be just a little bit like that, but not quite to that extreme. I also believe that Mariko likes Nanako as more than just a friend, and being sapphic myself, being lonely for so long eventually takes its toll on your mental health, which is something that I cannot deny.

What will happen between the two of them on their next school day?

abondonment issues, it seems? just as i thought. the desire to become an adult is also something to unpack. it was great having a Mariko centered episode and i hope we will learn more about her. for the moment, it's also unclear why she wants to get rid of Tomoko. wouldn't it be better for her to have two friends - both Nanako and Tomoko? though this situation is rather tricky cause these two are childhood friends and it is likely Mariko won't be able to reach the same level of intimacy as they two already have. maybe thats's why she tries to befriend Nanako exclusively? shouldn't she pick up a friend who doesn't have a long term bestie instead then? she probably can't befriend anyone who's already this school student because they already have prejudices against her, but i doubt Nanako and Tomoko are they only new faces here. or maybe the intimacy Mariko craves is of different nature? insisting on taking a bath tohether and having a sleepover so desperately... i wouldn't be surprised if she is romantically or sexually attracted to Nanako. then again, maybe she's just really obsessed with experienced something that is 'something that good friends do' in her mind.

evil ochoufujin strikes again. she told Misaki she would make sure Misaki won't be elected into sorority in the first episode, now she gives her false hope. no way all this drama isn't her doing. i wonder if she accounted for crazy Mariko.

this episode overall was creepy and uncomfortable to wath. which just shows how good this show is in conveying the mood and emotions.

I didn't expect Mariko to be that rich. As for "crazy", lol, I wasn't overly surprised. Still, despite how she has acted so far, including this episode, I do not dislike her... in the sense of hating, or judging her character. Rather, I feel... compassion.

Mariko is showing symptoms of BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), characterized by emotional instability and a deep fear of abandonment. This episode conveyed those intense, impulsive, seductive, possessive etc. aspects of her personality (and the disorder) quite well, even the paranoia at the end. And the thing is... it's not like those with this illness are excused from their actions, but they quite literally cannot control their emotions when they "split." It isn't a question about willpower, in the sense of self-restraint, or "being rational" — there simply is no alternative in the moment, as they are unable to emotionally regulate themselves. Only those who have this illness understand just how difficult it is to live with it, and it destroys all their relationships, almost without exception. It explains why Mariko does not have many friends, if at all, and much better than the stigma around her father's profession does. She must have had a traumatic childhood, with distant parent(s), to become like this.

All in all, I don't look too negatively at her actions, and I like her as a character so far. Even though her manipulation around Tomoko has caused Nanako great emotional pain (and, by extension, myself), I liked that she genuinely did want to be her friend, and did her best to defend Nanako from being bullied at every turn. In essence, she has good qualities too! Going forward, I hope she can see that Tomoko isn't necessarily a threat, and that all three of them can "co-exist" together. That is... if Nanako forgives her for this night. I hope she is okay! She ran off into the dark — alone, low visibility, pouring rain, no sense of direction... and all.

On a side note, yay for Miya-sama... I suppose. She seems to be delivering on her promise to help Nanako out, and I hope that Misaki-clown stops bullying her after that conversation. One thing I like about Ichinomiya is that she doesn't need to be diplomatic about what she says openly, only to be insincere and then act contrary behind your back or the like. She seems firm and resolute in her decisions, and will tell any unpleasant things to your face, directly herself.

Also, Mariko's mother looks... good. :O
