Tbh, some of the anger this episode was justified. I'd be pissed too if a photo was used without my consent.

Besides the usual dealing with business and drama, there's also some short flashbacks. I do wish we get one of those episodes that takes a deeper dive into the main cast's history though.

Wow this was a very interesting episode where we finally got to learn more about Kouya and why he doesn't want to take pictures of people anymore and I just feel bad for Haruka for thinking that he his responsible for his dad taking risks and dying in a race

It's sad to see Haruka has no power over the sponsor regarding the use of the photo, but on the other hand, Haruka is just too cute and that's probably why everyone want to see him cry. His crying photo is worth so much it should be a national treasure where everyone can see it.

This anime attacks my emotion on two sides. On the surface it's the struggling of teenage racers, but deep down it's also a struggling of cameraman photographer with trauma event. I see these kind of comments all the time in a video or photo of disaster/war/accident, like "why didn't cameraman stop shooting and go help them?", and while they're not wrong to ask those questions, they should also ask themselves why they didn't stop commenting on internet and go help people instead.

How is this series consistently so high quality??? Every scene is so carefully crafted, from the myriad background details, through the faces, the body language, the voice acting, the background music, down to the smallest sound effects. Even what looks like a little filler detour in the first half is actually great because we get to spend some off-time with more of the off-characters... and then the second half just - right in the feels, in more ways than one. Continue to be absolutely amazed by this.

On a sidenote, after four episode I have to ask: I can't be the only one sensing some subtle BL vibes here??? (Or not-so-subtle, with Sae's "cave of heaven" comment, jfc... pfft.)

finally we know what happened in the past. Koya still seems like a wonderful person. He couldn´t really help the girl, but at least he captures her last breath. I don´t think it was selfish, it was to show the world how terrifying the nature can be and how fragile the life is.

"Support is more for the person providing the support..." ack! This anime just continues to hit racing the fan in me. The animation/editing still slaps 4 eps in too.
I'm glad we get a slower episode, with deeper look into Kouya's past. Always find photographic journalism to walk that gray area, but capturing a moment can also help the audience to have deeper empathy too. It was an insightful story.

Some of my favorite photos were captured during times when perhaps a photo wasn't "supposed" to be taken. It captures people in the rawest way possible. Sometimes at the best, sometimes at the worst.

Kouya IS a bit too much though, but at least he isn't as annoying as Alice!

Was less dramatic then I had expected them to make it. Just some natural disaster. He might really not have been able to do something else - when it was dangerous. Then he compensated by helping later at distributing stuff to the people.

The picture thing is kinda tricky. Personally I also would not like to relatives be shown into a pic before the die. But I know there also are a lot of people that are like "say their names" in favor of showing pics + names and stuff. (Though they also often do it for just other random people and not even people they are related to. Spreading the stuff on social media.) In terms of fighting climate change (so less natural disasters might occur - for earth quakes in Japan it might not really help though) there might be people that use such pics - to get attention and appeal to the viewer.

It seems they do not make it out as a general evil thing and the ex-wife seems to understand him. Ex-wife is a good char. I also liked the talk with her and Haru and the scene in the end when he said he wants his pic to be taken when he is on the winner's podium.

So we finally got Koya's backstory and why he hasn't taken pictures of people (except for crying Haruka). Speaking of Haruka, that was harsh what the Belsorriso driver said to him but in the end Haruka got to be in a commercial first.

Beyond all that it looks like Haruka is beginning to understand and maybe even respect Koya.

I like how the start of the episode kind of gives you the feeling that Kouya would be a father figure in Haruka's life, especially given the pep talk in the last episode. However, the episode ends with both of them on equal ground. That Haruka can also lift up Kouya, even if Kouya himself doesn't feel like he necessarily needs it or anything. Haruka's last line to his father was something that Kouya accepted naturally, even though he doesn't accept any work for taking pictures of people, he knows he'll be able to take a picture of Haruka on the podium. What Haruka said made me cry, it was so heartwarming.

That being, said, I would be mortified too if I was in Haruka's position, seeing the CM ending with that picture, LOL. Poor kid. But glad he got over it, haha. He was incredibly expressive in this episode, loved seeing all the facial expressions. The directing in this show is amazing so far. It's not over the top, but not too subtle in order to get its point across. I also appreciate how the backstories were presented naturally. You still felt sad, but the stories didn't play out dramatically, either.

This reminds me of the famous photo shots such as the "The vulture and the little girl by Kevin carter (1993) and "the falling man by Richard Drew(2001)".
While such photos sparked controversy, I am thankful that such photos are published in the first place.
At first, seeing the photos make one question the appropriateness of the photos and the moral ground of the photograhers. However, that very outburst of emotion allows one to experience that very events and reflect on the intensity.

Every time I come back to this show, I get surprised of how thoughtfully the script is written. Glad they didn't go too much with the drama too, just a few moments. The humor gradually decreases as we move on with the episode until the final scene with Haruka and Madoka.

Imo images of people during disaster should only be taken with their permission or used for journalism, the way the episode showed depicting it at an art exhibit is a questionable choice especially considering the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of 2011 was catastrophic of nearly 20k deaths.

--

Otherwise good episode, still think I would have preferred if the anime wasn't more about Kyoya than Haruka.

The first half was really funny. Sponsors are an opportunity, but they can be a pain to deal with too!

The second half finally gave the details on the backstories. I'm suprised Hayuka actually became a pilot after it killed his father. Overall the drama was good, but I wish they'd taken some more time to make it more emotional. Especially since the anime generally felt slow, rather than overpaced.

Interesting. I like this anime waaay more than MF Ghost, although at this point it's clear they are very different and probably shouldn't be compared just because they are about racing. But the way this story is told, the animation and characters are all far more appealing to me. It feels more genuine and down to earth. Not as much exciting racing shots so far, but it's not a bad thing. It's actually good we get to know the characters and what drives them (and there's no annoying romantic subplot here, at least for now).

For Haruka, his pride is his racing, brought forth the good news to his family grave, that's respect.

Kouya's commercial advertisement putting him on the spotlight for Mikazuki Beverages, it feels that he has hoodwinked Haruka, but the results were positively accepted, which apart from Haruka's disdain, it was a success. Most certainly, the word "lose" really hits him hard, and both Kotarou and Alice were surpised that Haruka didn't even know the cameraman's name by now. For Satsuki to come congratulating him on getting the CM before him, like said rising star, losing is not really in Haruka's dictionary,

Kouya finding himself blocked by Haruka no matter how many apologies he dished out, the fact is that his naturally crying facial expression is a steal, but it's not like they can get similar shots like it willy-nilly, despite being a sponsor. Kouya is facing his old nightmares again for a temporary moment, though his ex-wife Saeko shielded him from the problem at hand. Saeko sharing her ex-husband's life as a photojournalist in the Tohoku area (at the time of the inspired Tohoku Earthquake disaster), the sensitivty of his job put him at the front of criticism trying to capture human models, though Haruka's photo was the first that he'd taken in a long time. Even so, Saeko stood by him, and the free time on the weekend to help spruce the Asahina family grave, Haruka's father was an up-and-coming F4 racer that despite his encouragements, was performing poorly until the tragedy of a crash that took his life, something that Haruka took seriously since his encouragement assumedly, drove his father up the wall in the midst of wanting him to get back to the podium.

The past tragedies of the racer and photojournalist, combine together for a force that makes a winning right.

Mikazuki Beverages really liked that crying photo apparently, so much so that they used it in their first commercial with Komaki Motors. When it was first screened at some kind of ballroom, Haruka was unsurprisingly very pissed. Kouya would try to console him, but the mere mention of his loss in that race triggered Haruka so much that he lost his composure. A chance meeting with Satsuki would see him compliment Haruka's achievement in starring in a commercial, only to mention his loss in that race which triggers Haruka again, prompting him to block Kouya in text.

Then we get to the photo shooting session, where a request to go back to shooting people again triggers Kouya's PTSD once more, and we finally get to hear an explanation from his partner and ex-wife, Saeko. Back in 2011, Kouya was shooting photos for a story about the Tohoku Tsunami. One particular photo he captured, that of a girl being caught by the tsunami, was released and displayed at a national photo gallery, which drew a lot of internet backlash from angry twitter users who considered it to be an act of exploitation. As a result, Kouya was intimidated from shooting photos of any kind of people for the next 12 years. Just like Oshi No Ko Episode 6, this is a reminder to anyone who uses the internet to back away from your social media when a vast wave of hate is directed towards your way.

When Kouya and Haruka visit the latter's family grave, Haruka shares his story about what happened to his father. During a race under heavy wet weather conditions, his father lost control and crashed out, causing a fire to ignite around his car. Whatever the cause was, he did not make it out alive. Haruka feels that his words of encouragement and desire to get back on the podium pushed his father into overdriving his car, leading to the accident. Haruka tells his father that when he finally makes it to the podium, Kouya will be the one taking his photo.

_________________________

So, on the topic of photographic exploitation, I saw a comment on the reddit discussion thread making a case for Kouya being completely in the wrong for the way in which he took that initial photo of Haruka in tears. It's been downvoted by a number of other redditors, but he seems to know a thing or two about photojournalism. Does he have a valid point to make here?

EDIT: In retrospect, even if ErebosGR was correct in regard to his analysis of the photo from a photojournalistic perspective, he completely failed to take into account the context behind those responsible for making and sharing it (Kouya never intended to distribute it. Saeko did it behind his back).

Releasing a photo of a person being swept up by tsunami is kinda brutal tbh. But the comments on if he should've done something to help the person in the photo is unwarranted.
