Obviously, Kenshin didn't want a violent fight or go back to the violent ways of swordsmanship.

Yahiko got challenged and it seems this arc is building him more as a character. However, his personality is still pretty much the same..always so loud and hotheaded. Yutaro is presented as his rival and I find their character chemistry quite entertaining.

It’s easy to guess this man never had fair encounters in his life up until this point, I mean he sees himself in a very high regard for some reason. Scheming such a grand plan of the eradication of every swordsmanship style and all, and he didn’t even have Kenshin in sweats when they fought lol.

Though moving forward, the kid who was uber annoying and was bragging about how he could beat Yahiko, never even practised swordsmanship to begin with. But being a joke he was, Kaoru and co. had no other choice but to take pity and teach him the basics. Not sure how much he could grasp and learn, but atleast he had a reason as to why he was going this far. Now it makes sense how Raijuta was able to make himself look like a good person in front of him and his family.

This story of how Raijuta saved Yutaro and his father back then looked and sounded very convenient to be honest. Also, I mean see, he’s already showing his true colours.

The fight at the beginning of the episode was really well done.
Interestingly, they cut completely the attack on the dojo by 3 of Raijuuta's disciples.
I think it improves the pacing, so it was probably the best call, although it does diminish the scope of the arc, by not showing as much of the kind of influence Raijuuta had. Also, the cynic in me can't help but think it might have been done in order not to animate a 4 way fight πŸ˜†

@Tahmim97 in my opinion, a combination of 3 factors:

1. the source material adapted thus far is just really not very strong
2. lackluster production values
3. lackluster direction in sound and cinematography

In times of peace there is no need for styles that focus on killing. Yutaro takes competition pretty seriously. Though him not knowing how to hold a shinai is a bit odd. Still his growth under Kaoru really was impressive. As suspected the true aim for Raijuta getting close to Yutaro's family was simply for the money. Its too bad that he caught on too late and with such tragic results as well. More than anything what happened here is gonna make Kenshin even more angry at Raijuta. Can't wait to see their little dual next ep.

I doubt it.

They just go in 1 by 1 , so there is not more to animate in the same frame. (Oh , and there is 4 disciples , not 3)
They really are rushing a few passages here and there to fit the whole thing in 3 Episodes...
So i'd say it's more due to the 24 Episodes restriction , and them wanting to end the Season at a perculiar point... ?

On top of the reasons listed by Perrin4869 , there is also some peoples that just wants to hate it. (Either because of their nostalgia for the previous adaptation , or because of their hate for the Author.)

It's still airing anyway , so the rating is mostly temporary , as most people are waiting for it to finish to rate it. The rating always goes up or down a few 0.x points after that.

Yutaro and Yahiko; descendants of Samuai who have felt their families have been disgraced.
When Yutaro stepped into Yahiko bullying his coworker, damn. Kenshin's glare; he means business, also, Sanousuke stayed behind a bit to gloat at Raijuta for failing to comprehend Kenshin's technique.
On top of the deception of him and his father, the worst harm Rajiuta could have done was inflicted on Yutaro; not being able to use a sword again.

So Raijuta was nothing more than a common thug using the investors son as leverage. Too bad Yuta will never be able practice swordsmanship after sustaining an injury to his arm. He had so much potential.

@Alexioos95 am I wrong, or is it the first time they skip a whole sequence from the manga?
The thing that I find curious though, is that I think they will have to stretch the remaining material to fill the next episode

I thought Raijuta was a bit of an asshole before, but after the new information this episode he’s now a certified fucko lol. So he never actually made Yutaro his apprentice, he was pretty much being used the whole time, and then Raijuta even went as far as attacking the kid and he supposedly can’t practice swordsmanship anymore which is pretty sad to see giving how much he was enjoying it earlier in the episode. One thing is certain tho, and that’s that Kenshin is royally pissed and this has me excited to see the fight between them.

And another potentially unfortunate loss would be not being able to see Yutaro and Yahiko clashing with each other anymore, I really enjoyed the moments between them before the big bad happened and I could see them becoming bros or rivals in the future, and that’s sadly not gonna happen now, but it was fun while it lasted at least, and hopefully Raijuta gets what’s coming to him.

Raijuta has officially awakened the beast! Kenshin will not let this slide, Yutaro was on his way to becoming a great swordsman until this buffoon wanted power. Raijuta needing money to spread his so called superior sword style that he staged a robbery of Yutaro father to manipulate him into being an investor in that sword style. Absolutely pathetic of Raijuta using this family for his own gains, now leaving Yutaro completely unable to learn swordmanship. Yutaro becoming closer to everyone was very sweet, even Yahiko had to acknowledge Yutaro as an outstanding opponent. One whom learned very fast and had a natural affinity for the sword. Raijuta could've had a great apprentice if he actually took the time to teach Yutaro anything. But we now see Raijuta true colors as he tried to ambush Team Kenshin while they were just out and injuring Yutaro in the process. True scum of the earth that Kenshin just deal with, even if Raijuta isn't someone worthy of crossing blades with Kenshin he must still dispatch thus fraud so he doesn't cause more harm.

@hany0u No the 90s anime had fillers for this arc. This adaptation is mostly true to the manga, with a few sequences cut and changed. As noted by Perrin4869, Raijuta's four other disciples doesn't attack the dojo, and there is some more minor changes such as an added scene of Yuta asking permission from Raijuta to train under Kaoru's school

Aside from the introduction of Hitokiri Battosai at the beginning of Episode 01 (that they replaced with a flashback of the Bakumatsu) , and the Oniwaban-shu preparing to attack the dojo , which were both only 1 page , it's indeed the first time they skip that much. It's almost a whole chapter.

The 4 disciples of Raijuta fighting Kenshin was Canon , and it was skipped here.
But the whole situation of the 1996 Anime was filler. There is no other samurais in the Manga , and they were not doing a coup. They simply attacked Kamiya's dojo to fight Kenshin.

Just when i thought its gonna be a peaceful episode with Yahiko chilling with Yutaro like a usual kid playing swords, well big guy showed up the true nature behind the intention. Still good to see that big guy wasn't using that much dirty cheap tricks. Since its all useless against Kenshin, hitting poor bozo is the best the big guy do to end the episode.

Settling the score next, of fucking course!

None of the major arcs have kicked in yet.

We have had one character (Aoshi) who we hould consider as strong.

Once Saito rocks up I expect people to start rating this higher.

This was just so sad.
  • Yuta was so enthusiastic about challenging all takers
  • He really believed in his master after that "fake" robbery
  • He hated his father for "Selling out" not realizing the power of money
  • Ended up training under Kaoru after asking his master, who told him to "spy" on Kenshin
  • Was actually starting to show some real talent
  • And after relating why he hero worships his master, that guy who wants to win at all costs ends up cutting him
  • Of course now Kenshin is good and mad
  • Dr. says he'll never fight again.

Damn .... NGL I can't wait to see the beatdown next expisode.

Raijuta challenging the Chuetsu clan's swordmanship, to which Kunai lost heavily to his Shinko-ryu, it's a duel against him and Kenshin for the best swordsmanship.

For now, Yutaro is saved, but Yahiko is not convinced of his swordsmanship, which he challenged him late in the night. But even then, Yutaro has not experience of any swordsmanship at all, which Raijuta would not train him to, that Kaori took it upon herself to train him personally. The reason being that Yutaro's father sold his ways of the samurai off to the merchant life, he purely wants to prove that he can make it as a samurai, but that Raijuta clearly had his plan to use him as a scapegoat to route the Kamiya Dojo.

Within a short span of time, Yutaro has grown and improved. A rare case of Raijuta saving Yutaro, he's convinced that his master is doing for hid god, but clearly, the ambush destroyed all credibility of his once he starts attacking everybody, and Kenshin has had enough of his antics to get Yutaro treated first to Megumi's clinic, which no thanks to Rajiuta, Yutaro has no chance of ever mastering swordsmanship again.

Face the wrath of Kenshin Battosai, Raijuta. You're just calling for trouble.

Quite a surprise that Yutaro had no experience in swordmanship at all. Learning more about his motives made very clear why he's so eager in becoming a swordsman.

The fact that Raijuta showed up and saved Yutaro and his father from the bandits simply didn't fit his character in terms of the behavior we've seen so far. With his façade crumbling, Raijuta did not turn out to be the great person Yutaro always admired. His attack, which injured Yutaro so badly that he will probably never be able to perform swordsmanship again and the words that he never intended taking Yutaro as a student, only confirmed this even further.

I feel bad for Yutaro as he seemed to have tremendous fun in the training with Yahiko and Kaoru as an instructor. Obviously, the most important thing is that he is alive, and yet I can hardly imagine how he will react when he finds out that he will probably never be able to wield a sword again.

Raijuta won't be ready to experience Kenshin's wrath.

One of the point of this adaptation is to be more faithful to the Manga than the 1996 Anime was... so no , they won't skip the Tokyo Arc. (Which is the introduction/setup to everything.)

They are gonna start it at Episode 19 , but no , the majority of the Arc will be in the 2nd Season , if there is.

You are not the target of this adaptation then.
They are changing every gags to be more meaningful dramatic interactions.

And for easy viewing/brain off , the Tokyo Arc should be better than the Kyoto Arc...
