This episode was disturbing and I like it. Until now I didn't register the nature of the Legion but now I can understand them more.

So that's why their previous Handlers quit... Yeah, that can be pretty hard to handle, no pun intended.

I guess this means his brother is one of the Shepherds.

Interesting backstory for Lena and Shin's brother.
The whole psychological part was really creepy though, that whole brains and dead's voices part is terrifying, I don't even understand how Shin can handle the pain of hearing the voices constantly

welp, it's only been 5 episodes but i've gone from liking the main girl to can't-fucking-stand-her. god damn she sucks. day dreaming about fooling around with undertaker in the stairwell. screaming like a fucking dumbass bimbo during the battle. omg just make her character not be trash

was that too much of an info dump? i feel like it was. the big reveal was captivating. but then it kept coming. and it's all pertaining to some type of technology that we didn't even know existed or that this world was capable of. i'm moderately worried that this show is going to take a ridiculous turn and the whole season is going to go downhill after what we just witnessed

at the end of the first episode someone asked undertaker if he heard his brother's voice. now we know what that was about

and at the end of all of that, the stupid girl's brilliant plan was "i'm going to 'fight with you' - err, i mean i'm going to help you - and we're going to kill them all so they won't kill you and force us racists cunts to have to actually take to the battlefield. i'm not actually going to try and do anything to help the 86 get out of this forced military labor. i'm going to keep using you like i always have and pretend i actually give a shit". fuck her. she's shit

i dropped my overall season score down to a 7/10 (from 8/10) after this episode

She's raised in an environment that made her naive, she speaks words that reek of hypocrisy, but she doesn't do these with an ill intent if you notice, that's why she stopped short of selling out her progress in the previous episode. There's still more to this war that she doesn't know about this war and will have to face it head on eventually.

For the technology portion it's literally a CPU, just with the added sci-fi concept of being modeled after an actual human brain. That's not too much of a stretch considering the extrasensory para-raid device, so the capability and existence of such technology is there and glossed over in previous episodes.

I knew this was going to get progressively direr, but somehow I was not expecting the fucking GHOST LEGION.

This show is so fucking excellent. Every episode has me utterly enthralled. Imagine thinking this series could be a top 10 contender after only 5 episodes; it's been so long since I've felt that way about a new series. Feels like it's 2014 and I have less than 20 days watched again.

So if you really dumbed down the complexity of the explanation of the Legion, they are basically mechanized AI zombies...like holy shit. Copying a human brain to bypass their own limiters while remnants of the consciousness of said person lives on thus creating a sense of feeling a ghost? Like goddamn son.
Don't believe the hype.

The episode is mostly the conversation between MILIZE & SHIN.
SHIN is so confident about Alba losing the war. What connection does he have with the Legion.

Sad to see her Papa die but atleast Shourei saved her. Pretty nice onii-chan that's for sure, although it's still unclear what happened to him. And yo what happened between him and Shin at the final scene, well that pretty much wraps up the secrets from the OP scenes.

Back to the present, and wow did Anette just got arranged to a 5 year old (WTF). And once again, we have a cute Lena enjoying her food. And AYY she blushed AAHHHH (Lena x Shin duh). Also did those fools really hook up on the stairs like that, the military is pretty cracked at this point.

And oh my god that infodump about the black sheeps scared the hell out of me. And the scene where Lena heard THE VOICES is fucking amazing, I love how A1 is killing it right now with this anime. And with the director being the same dude who worked on Erased's last episodes, this is such an improvement from the guy, nice one!

Another episode to bear starting from the last episode we see Lena from her young age and the accident that happened to her and her father and her savior in the battlefield is non other than Shourei and he's the one that changed Lena's outlook on 86

The voices in her head were far too scarring and horrifying to listen and watch through it was immersive as hell I mean it's hell itself

Shin can hear the voices of the "dead" or the Legion itself he's very aware of his surroundings good to keep him around and it ended like that just like that.

Hm, the plot thickens! &++ is getting grimmer too!

I like the conversation between Lena and Shin. At first, Lena says, "I'm with you" but then she realizes that she isn't really, and so she moonwalks and says she'll do her best instead. Nice self-awareness there

Wow, what an episode. So that Legion forces not only won't stop after 2 more years, but will evolve, thanks to brains of fallen soldiers? San Magnolia's ignorance will backfire in the nearest future, when there will be no more 86s to fight for Albas.

We got some Lena's past, when she and her father going into battleground and got attacked by legion that unfortunately take her father's life. In the glimpse of almost dying she saved by none than other Shourei Nouzen, Shin's older bro. He saved her even knowing how Alba's treat 86.That's made her really want to justify a justice for them.

Like usual morning another lil hangout with her bestfriend annette talking about her views.
and while doin some chit-chit through para-raid with Shin in her way to the command center, She met 2 Alba's student were flirting and being affectionate toward each other. She getting some secondhand embarassment watching them while She actually also imagining the one who being intimate right there with Shin (ShinLena!!! dat foreseeing in the future in the LN :D).... damn Lena XD..

Back into another battle against Legion, we got introduced into new kind of legion called Black Sheep. Lena also asked Shin why he could predict incoming legion. Shin asked to disconnect the Para-Raid because of the Black Sheep, but She still insist on-line. She heard a lot of voice and scream and glimpse of Kaie voice in the end. As she seems to break down Shin decided to forcefully cut the connection. Those voices kept haunting Lena until squad finished the battle and She got on-line again. After she told sorry about her breakdown before, Finally Shin explain the voices were voices from the dead, precisely spirit/ghost of fallen 86 processors. The shocking truth was aside of being shut in less 2 years, Legion used Human Brain as replacement to kept in active and reproduced as their main system was similiar to human brain. That what Black Sheep is and why it emits those "dead" voices aside of that because they adapted decayed human brain they got limited intelligence from the individual too, that's why they quite tough in battlefield. Other than that was another type call "Sheperds" the one who took fully intelligence from the individual and usually commanding the horde.

Shin said because of that... there were no hope for Republic to prevail against that. Lena... Still with her Strong resolve believed that there still a way to destroy the Legion.

That last scene tho.. maybe we can see what happen between Shin and Shourei in the past..

I regret not watching this series when it first aired because I'm ABSOLUTELY loving it. The politics/world-building is actually easy to understand despite it's complexity because it's actually explained nicely. I also love how this anime has a female protagonist because I feel like so many mecha anime have male protagonists. I'll probably give this series an 8/10 if it stays this strong.

Clear as day that his brother is a "shepherd", that's why he said he wants to find him and when she asked "his body?" he replied "no", because it's not a body

But I'm not sure if I like the whole ghost explanation thing, I don't like it being a supernatural-ish explanation. Like it could've been just recordings of the victims to distract them and that's it, it could've been much more simple. and imo its too slow paced

I actually had the same thought while I was watching. I was sure that the voice of Kaie was some kind of PSYOP from the Legion, perhaps magnified by the para-raid link which is why Lena was so strongly impacted. I'm still not sure if the 'ghost' is meant literally or if it represents their consciousness, which was taken with the brain and downloaded somehow as an AI. That apparent connection between deceased 86 and shepherd is still unclear to me. But I'm still really enjoying this series so I plan to keep watching and I assume it will become clearer.

so they are including supernatural bs about undertaker being able to hear ghosts before they enter?

no great explanation. just that he died once almost and now he is connected to the spirits of the underworld.

so he is probably searching for his brother's voice among the shepherds and black sheeps.

still it doesnt make much sense.

but it was seriously fun to watch the albino commander lose her shit.

Without change,we end up becoming the very person we hate.

I was dead until the moment I met you. I was a powerless corpse pretending to be alive. Living without power, without the ability to change my course, was bound to lead me to a slow death.

The idea of robots being programmed to know how to preserve human brains - damaged or intact, and use them to command stronger forces is unsettling as hell.

Can't imagine what clearly hearing the voice of someone who passed a few days ago would do to you psychologically. As if remembering all those fallen comrades wasn't heavy enough on Shin.

Spoilers ahead, so if you don't want to see them, skip this for now.

The biggest reveals in the episode is firstly that Lena's father died due to a legion attack. Lena was saved by Shourei. This in part with Lena's father's rhetoric may give some background as to why Lena wants to protect and save the Eighty Six and does not view them as 'sub-human.' This is quickly challenged by Annette in the scene after, who says Lena should stop worrying so much about the Eighty Six, causing her to become flustered.

The other large reveal is that the Legion takes undamaged human brains and uses them to extend their life and increase their strategic capabilities. However, the Republic is unaware of this and it may be the cause of their eventual demise. Lena swears to Undertaker that she will give it her best to wipe out The Legion and save both the Republic and the Eighty Six.

This episode is probably a 5/10 for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the animation felt a little lazy in this episode. There were two major sections where either Lena or Undertaker walked around for more than 3-4 minutes doing very little other than talking. I am a "show not tell" kind of viewer, and unfortunately there was a lot of exposition and unnecessary analysis that could have been explored in more creative ways. Some of the writing also does not make a ton of sense. If Lena is aware of the Republics impending crises, why not tell her higher ups ASAP in order to start preparing? Regardless of whether this was out of ignorance or arrogance, this seems like a writing error.

This show rarely has character consistency. What I mean by this is that characters will flash on the screen only once or twice, such as Annette, and will not be seen for the rest of the episode. Because of this, characters feel shallow, uninteresting, and only exist to serve the plot. It doesn't feel like they exist to themselves, they are only tools for the protagonists. In a similar vein, there are many filler scenes that have very little substance or impact on the show. Take for example in episode three (i think) when a few members fell out of a bush only to be attacked by a few women in the eighty six (it was supposed to be a funny scene, but it was eh). Scenes like this are not uncommon and add little substance to a show that already struggles to stay engaging.

The action at this point in the show also feels stale. Fighting scenes between the Eighty Six and The Legion feel the same as they did every other episode, making for boring action sequences that should be exciting.

But Lena and Undertaker, along with the rest of the Eighty Six, are likable and make an interesting team. The exploration of technological combat and machines with human like intelligence are interesting themes, and the show does keep consistent in its messaging about the horrors of discrimination and warfare. Other themes, such as the supernatural, seem out of place and jarring, especially given this show seems like it should be exploring technological consequences...not ghosts.

This episode was severely underwhelming. I was hoping for more. I'll keep watching it to see if it improves more, but for now, it hasn't been unlike anything I've seen.

This was a real bombshell that just shattered the pristine premise that 86 are just cannon fodder until the war wins itself. I felt a shiver run down my spine the moment "shepherds" were mentioned. The way this story felt so narrow in scope until now is really serving it well for these major revelations.
