THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I'd say that this is in line with many 3DCG boxing anime that we've seen...see Polygon Pictures's Levius. This in particular is produced by Logic&Magic for the 3DCG, despite BN Pictures helming everything else, and honestly it doesn't look bad.

Being a completed 23-year old source, this is a classic manga series that only the most dedicated otakus willl have ever heard this back in the heyday....that is, boxing but in the Roman Empire, literally a fight to the death.

The low hierarchical and innocent Cestvs being thrown into a situation out of his control of being a slave-boxer, and fighting his own friend Rocco, there is simply no pleasantries in that time of day and age. Fight to earn for freedom, serve the Roman Emperor...and don't get killed out of treason.

A young 15-year-old Cestvs, and young Julius Caesar with the usual Greek names you'd hear of the Roman Empire, hope this will be a good ride, even if the pacing felt fast.

Otherwise a very rushed episode, filled with boring characters and dull visuals. I don't think this is a winner.

Doesn't really stand out as there's so many great shows in Spring this year. It's actually not that bad when it comes to the CGI... apart from the first couple minutes lol... other then that, it's fine

It reminds me of Ryu... I guess because of the red head band lol... it's like Ryu vs Saget right off the bat

I can tolerate mediocre 2D animation, and even bad 3D to some extent. But I can't forgive a poorly told story.

Don't bother, there are better boxing anime out there.

this seems like it could decent i guess, althought the story and characters aren't really that interesting, its the first time i've seen an anime set in ancient rome, could be cool with the gladiators and stuff too. thing im uneasy about is the production, specifically the animation since it kinda looks a bit inconsistent with being cgi at some parts and then 2d at others; cgi got really bad at some points too... also, is it just me or was anyone else getting kinda BL vibes from this anime?

Honestly, felt cheated by the promotional images, PV's and the opening. I thought I was getting a garbage 3D CG anime, not an average 2D shonen-esque anime!

Besides the production values being meeeeeh, it is just average. The one big complaint I have is that this feels like it is romanticizing slavery. Ofcourse, this is anime about ancient rome. I barely give a fuck about people 2000 years ago, but it is still weird to see slavery treated in this anime so... mildly? Like the romans are just kinda indifferent towards slaves and treat them just normally, even though history has shown us that most slave owners are horrible to their slaves, so this feels like some weird romanticizing of slavery and especially slave owners.

In the end, it is not as bad as I thought it would be. It is just an average Boxing Anime. This Ashito no Joe, Hajime no Ippo and Megalo Box ain't, but it also isn't Ex-Arm, so it has that going for it.

The CGI or the poor visuals in general ain't my problem, but the pacing is. It's progressing a bit too fast for my taste, it's hard to get invested that way. The tone is also suffering due to that. I wouldn't mind some light hearted moments, but the shifts here are too much.

Still, the overall premise is for one something fresh for modern anime and I like boxing anime, especially when the
setting is a bit more on the gritty side. I mentioned the tone shifts before, but I do like the shounen-esque feeling.

Probably gonna read the manga alongside. Think this adaptation isn't doing it justice.

CESTVS: The Roman Fighter:

The Artstyle is rather bad, mostly because of the characters. The CGI Fight scenes are hideous. Ancient Rome feels kinda underwhelming. The Emperor's right hand (Demetrius) man looks like Space Pirate Cobra.

The plot is rather generic at this point (I haven't read the manga)

The pacing is horrendous

The MC is clearly very trained to have become a slave gladiator (something that wouldn't have been easy on any of them), yet seems new to the harsh realities of that time's economic system and doesn't know why he has to fight. Also, he's about as ripped as a Jojo character. I'm probably being a bit harsh though, as it's still E1.

WHY?:
- Does Cestus meet the emperor after his first fight?
- Is the Carthaginian fighter named "Kendall" (a Celtic name), if the Carthaginians spoke a semitic language?
- Is Demetrius' Pankration mixed with "eastern martial arts"?

MY RATING: 4/10 (At least it's not Ex-Arm)

The advertising felt like a rip-off, there was very little CG in the actual episode, and what little their was did definitely come across as a studio's first CG project(the blank stares of background characters were quite terrifying)

The 2D parts were also pretty limited, so I couldn't get into that either

Along with that, I didn't like how this episode was paced, it felt like they quickly established one thing and moved on immediately. There was little time for anything to sink in or for me to actually care

To be fair, this probably wasn't going to be for me either way, I was just curious about the CG

Also the kaiser and blonde fighter looked the same in the beginning lol

Technical comments
- Switching between 2D animation and 3DCG confused me, I prefer 2D but most importantly I prefer consistency.
- All boys are older than they look in manga, which is very bad for me. I enjoy Cestvs is because I love to watch boys, and now they're like adult, despite the age data is the same as in manga.

Story comment
- While the anime keep the same story as manga, I still don't like all of this violence. If I were the emperor I'd use Colosseum for an orgy instead.

The OP is the opener to the show and basically acts as an advertisement...so why in the fuck is it CG while the rest of the anime is (thankfully) not? And then it goes back to shit in the ED.

Odd choice.

Characters are overblown because it's aimed pretty young for some reason. Makes me want to rewatch Spartacus or Gladiator. Doubt I'll be watching this for long.

I was getting BL vibes as well, and not just because of the bishounen-like eyes, but also because of the blushing and complement giving as well, not complaining though :)

It's certainly not the worst thing I've seen. But it feels extremely rushed, which is unfortunate. I feel like this anime could've been great if they properly paced it. Mediocre animation is tolerable if the story and characters are well written. Unfortunately,it seems like the anime won't be the most well written show. The good news is this anime made me want to re-read the manga.

Read the manga bros, it's way better.
They tried to fit too much into one episode. The fight they showed before the OP takes place a few arcs later, so they're really going to rush it to get there in time.
And I don't see why they're randomly interchanging between 2d and 3d.
Netflix ruins everything

Weird how the first minute plus the OP and ED are CGI but the rest of the episode was regular 2D animation. I thought this was gonna be another Kengan Ashura, which was entirely CGI.

Nothing special so far, hopefully it'll improve. I found it funny though how Rocco's death was portrayed as something so emotional, but it was hard to really care since we knew him for like 2 minutes lol.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

That ep was really cool, love it.

What bothered me more than anything was the blushing between the main char and the bigger guy in the cell before their death match. Really wasn't needed....

CG well, I hope theres less of that in the coming episodes.

Overall I really loved the fighting and sport present here.

Liked the episode. And the fact that the source is an older finished manga (there seems to be a sequel manga not finished though - according to MAL) makes it promising.

I do not dislike the visuals. And the fighting and setting is nice. A bit different than usual. Also interesting other characters. (The emperor. And the blonde elite fighter boy.)

Only the pacing at the beginning was a bit fast. I do understand that Cestvs (v seems the Roman u) and the other boys seemed to be slaves of that noble guy (who owns a boxing training school). For some reason boxing seems the main entertainment sport. (And not gladiators with weapons anymore.) And the first selection was to get the stronger ones - that would be trained into fightrs. (Other half got killed.)

But what about that trainer? Why did he specifically seem to know only Cestvs? Does he work for the nobleman with the training school? Or did some other reasons lead him to notice and train Cestvs? We also do not know how Cestvs became to be a slave.

Maybe there will be a flashback later. 1st episodes tend to start directly with the action. Especially in such types of story where it would be boring to see background story first.

The animation was better than I expected. I got some enjoyment out of it. I'm glad Cestvs has made a friend. The BL subtext of whatever that is threw me of, but it's not a negative point in my eyes. If people decided to ship, I don't care so long as no canals are blocked. Overall, the anime's not too bad.

besides, it was actually really enjoyable, I really like the characters and their chemistry one thing that wasn't executed really well were the fights especially the one between Cestvs and the other guy where it wasn't so smooth and the heads just suddenly got bigger in some shots

I really liked the first episode, the change in animation style was good.

People were saying it is fast, but for me this episode flowed perfectly, I also liked the direction, there was a transition in the episode that was creative.

The only thing I didn't like was that the attacks don't have much impact, I hope it gets better.

Low production quality but still interesting to see its about gladiators as there are hardly any anime out there that focus on Ancient Rome. Also ominous to know its set in the time of Nero Claudius who's known as the worst roman emperor
