They're from the same director, so you can expect the style to be quite similar. 5cm doesn't have the whole sci-fi element involved though... at least not as it stands after the first episode.

They're from the same director, so you can expect the style to be quite similar. Voices of a Distant star is a bit short in comparison, but quite similar otherwise. Both focus heavily on the relationships between main characters, and both have the whole near-future sci-fi thing going on.

The same atmosphere of romanticism and beauty

The hugely talented Makoto Shinkai directed both of these movies and the art, animation and sound are very similar. They both have quite a large element of fantasy, though The Place Promised in our Early Days leans more towards sci-fi than outright fantasy, unlike Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo. Both are absolutely brilliant.

Without being dystopian future, Bungaku Shoujo still has a slight feel that the dystopian narrative brings into play, emotionally pulling in the same manner. Yet, both series, one a dystopian historical-au and the other not have a melody about the plot flow which remains similar. Picture a musical score done for two different movies, yet the two being exact opposites of each other. Despite this, both appeal to the same musical audience. In such these two movies are similar in vein, having a similar narrative feel.

Both have extraordinary animation, especially the scenery. The viewing experience is stunning, instead of watching characters the main focus is the breathtaking scenery. Both also have similar deep dark atmospheres of pain and heartbreak, the main characters desperately trying to find love.

Makoto Shinkai is involved in both films so expect some similar themes, stunning visuals, and character relationships spawned from chance encounter through interactions. There is a melody of calm music present in both films that is elegant and serene. Then, there's the romance that is also a theme in both films. There is also a dramatic tone in both films that gets emotional and can be memorable.

Both have same background story. However steins:gate giving more detail about their story on their series so its more make sense than Kumo no Mukou. If we talk about romance , of course Steins;gate is no match for makoto shinkai. But if we talk which one is more entertain, Steins;gate is the winner I suggest Steins;gate deja vu movie because the story was close enough with Kumo no Mukou but of course you need to watch the series for more detail.

"The Place Promised In Our Early Days" Doesn´t have the kind of shock-factor that "Akira" has, in fact it´s rather sentimental. However it shares some of the themes concerning metaphysics and gives off that same, mysterious atmosphere. If you were impressed with the philosophy behind akira, give this a try.

- Crisp design and art. Great background detail. - Nice OST with lots of classical violin pieces. - Similar storyline: two male friends' attempt to save some female character with an outrageously delicate constitution, cheesy drama ensue. - Strange combination of weird sci-fi and low-key slice of life. - Natural sounding voice acting.

The landscapes, the pacing, the atmosphere... High school students building a large pilotable machine on their own... Overarching sci-fi and supernatural themes... Plot focused on strange phenomena with conspiracy in the background... ...With personal relationships in the foreground. Robotics;Notes just feels a lot like a Makoto Shinkai film in TV series form. There's also the similarities with Cosmonaut (5 Centimeters per Second): Tanegashima, rockets, scooters.

The storylines for both films are impacted by the event of the Japanese defeat in the Second World War and involve the Soviet Union's takeover of islands formerly occupied by Japanese citizens. Furthermore, the two films each tell a story of a pair of young lovers longing to reunite with each other after separation.

Both involve some kind of war between the human race and aliens. (In KnMYnB this story is more or less pushed off to the side ) Both are visually stunning pieces of anime that are a treat for the eyes.

Although the content of the two works differs greatly, the tone and general atmosphere of The Place that Was Promised very much reminded me of Mushishi, and I believe that anyone for whom the tone of this movie really resonated is likely to enjoy Mushishi for the same reason.

A group of long estranged childhood friends reunite and rediscover their old dreams. Relationships are tested, old feelings resurface, and the fragility of futures that were imagined together

they both have very similar plots about two or many worlds and friends who are trying to save the person they love.

These films are really great, both had a similarly, they're Sci-fi about the dreams. Both are different, like Kumo no Mukou is so harder to understand, because it's a non-linear film, and Paprika is easy, because it's a linear film. Both films are very emotive, but I think that Kumo no Mukou is more. In my opinion they're amazing, and it's worth watch them.

Both animes develop into fantastic worlds and arouse the same feeling when you see them. The protagonists are similar and are involved in similar stories to rescue who else they want.

These two stories explore the bonds of friendship and first love against the backdrop of multiple dimensions and their convergence into each other. Sayuri (Kumo no Mukuo...) and Haruka (Noein), the female main characters, experience visions and/or dreams of the different dimensions. Although their personalities are different, the do share the honor of being key to world shattering plots.

Both are sci-fi and romance. Contains atmosphere of beauty and both have theme plot in the sky . Both have high-flying adventure. In both Main male character is an engineer. In both anime they vow to unravel the mystery. In Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa it is of the luminous crystal around Sheeta's neck and in Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku it is about the tower. There quest won't be easy.

Both involve machines, mysterious girls, warfare and themes of friendship/love and finding one's place in the world. They also have a similar feel at the end.

The general feeling of the worlds are kind of the same, and you'll have the same kind of emotional response during each movie. Again, you have 2 boys and a girl who are childhood friends, but where The Place Promised does not involve a love triangle, Wonderful Days does. What they share is a sadness to the love story, and a sense of lonliness. The same kind of soundtrack and silence and general directing/artistic style are present in both

The side story in Clannad of the girl in the lost world coincides with the storyline of The Place Promised in Our Early Days. They carry the exact same sad empty atmosphere. Both also regard young men going through hardships due to lost loves. Ah, serious complicated love.

Firstly, I want to warn you about spoilers. I don't know how much EXACTLY you count spoilers for, so just a warning ^^ Both Animes have everythng surrounded by spaceships, a boy, who lvoes a girl and about the girl's poor condition.

Both of these deal primarily with the issues of depression and finding your place in the world. They are both heavily psychological, well-scripted, and contain only enough science fiction to add to the characters, rather than just become the premise for the show.
report Recommended by Cren
Both are extremely pretentious as far as the story goes, but somehow their animation and music forces you to sit through it. So maybe if you actually liked one of these, you'll also enjoy the other, considering I feel they have almost the exact same failures!

Both are peacefull and the painting style and landscape are great!

Both of these movies are undoubtedly the most visually stunning works in their own right. In terms of plot elements and settings, both stories revolve around a TOWER of GARGANTUAN proportions, combat & conflict is involved and have a relatively "okay-ish" plot. Without going into spoiler territory, you can say that both have the concept of "sacrificing someone for the sake of saving the world." If you enjoy stunning visuals and a decent story then check these movies out!

Same music, similar art. Great twists, nice romance. Just except this is a movie.

Rather mild stories that revolve around a girl who sees a special place in her dreams, and the ones who love her. They also share sci-fi themes, other dimensions, betrayal, a degree of wistfulness, and the desire to go to a certain faraway place.

The first half of TPPiOED is a lot like Ocean Waves. There's a love triangle, where two guys (one with glasses, one not) get involved with a girl. The girls in both differ greatly, Ocean Waves' being very selfish, but you'll watch both and have similar feelings. Unlike TPPiOED, Ocean Waves doesn't turn into a sci-fi mess half-way through. That's why I rate Ocean Waves a lot higher. In terms of other Ghibli titles, Ocean Waves is very similar in execution and 'feel' to Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart; two of the more mature Ghibli releases.

Watching them you can feel the same feeling of freedom and peace...

The artwork is beautiful in both of these. Not necessarily the best reason to recommend as the genres are totally different but i would definately recommend both to anyone.

they both have very moving stories with good characters..

Though Only Yesterday lacks the fantasy element in The Place Promised in Our Early Days, both main characters think about what happened in their pasts and how it is currently affecting them
