Both have extraordinary animation, especially the scenery. The viewing experience is stunning, instead of watching characters the main focus is the breathtaking scenery.
Both also have similar deep dark atmospheres of pain and heartbreak, the main characters desperately trying to find love.

Both anime develop "love & distance" theme with metaphoric approach to the "distance" part. Similar atmosphere, similar feelings. Both anime are very touching. Visual styles are also quite similar: incredibly beautiful, with bright colours and massive usage of nontrivial artistic techniques. And both anime share wonderful soundtracks, written by Atsushi Shirakawa aka Tenmon.
