Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse

Blue Gender is best described as a MUCH more serious/gritty, FAR less fan service-y equivalent to Muv Luv. Where as Muv Luv's origin lies in visual novels and is full of haremish rom-com pandering NO, Blue Gender is simply an anime original, very grim post-apocalyptic survival series. Just watch Blue Gender unless you like 'bait & switch' harem fluff. Alien bugs have overrun Earth and robots are used to fight them in desperate battles. Expect to see brutal, graphic deaths. The two also share male/female lead duo romance subplots: Blue Gender treats sex casually, whilst Muv Luv focuses on... blushing wuv. 

The author of Attack on Titan, Hajime Isayama, said the following in an interview: "My earliest inspiration was the adult game Muv-Luv Alternative, in which aliens invade and humankind is on the brink of annihilation." Total Eclipse is a spin-off of what Isayama is referring to, but the influence was blatantly obvious in episode two: a cast of characters were introduced and then brutally killed off in quick succession; one being eaten in gruesome fashion in front of a despairing friend. HOWEVER, later the series goes 'full harem' and there is very little additional alien bug slaughter. In contrast to Shingeki, it does NOT convince as a survival series, overall. At all. In any event: the settings differ, and the enemy of mankind are creepy-bugs-with-mouths rather than titans, but the execution of the start was still much too similar to overlook. But, unfortunately, that is where the similarities start and end. read more 

Sidonia is what you were wishing for if you watched Muv-Luv and thought it could be so much better if it took its own material more seriously. Although with Sidonia you do lose the epic bodysuits, almost entirely female cast and more blunt harem elements. Its certainly worth watching if you want a more mature telling of what it might be like if humanity found itself pushed to the brink. 

This is similar to Infinite Stratos as they are both Mecha, and harem genres. However, IS does focus more on fan service and the harem aspect compared to Muv-Luv. Both have great character development and interesting plots. 

Both have a similar story, with a war between humans and aliens. Aliens already destroyed some places in the world, with the rest trying to survive, fighting against they. Protagonists are moe girls. 

Very similar to each other. Both stories involve humans fighting alien bugs that are taking over the earth. They also both favor character development over actual battles, which can be a let down for some people. 

They are both set in the same universe with Schwarzesmarken being a sort of prequel to Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse. The differences being that Schwarzesmarken is set in germany and being set about 30 years before Muv-Luv. 

Soldiers are created for war and must be willing to lay down their lives when the time arise. Expendability is a term that must not be questioned under any circumstances. Story and music-wise, neither series excels in a tolerable level but the amount of killing would leave people freaking out of their minds. Throughout this wrecked world, minor characters are seen falling way before any developments could be established. 'Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse' brings a world where conflict of interest results in the killing of innocence in order to achieve an objective. All sides share the same circle of neutrality while friendship is avoided in order for a country to maintain a strong solid foundation than the rest. 'Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo' put its focus on human discrimination in which the use of magic is everything, not possessing it would mean losing one's identity and everything they loved. The fail beings are forced into military training to combat vicious enemies and throw away their lives for the sake of a greedy humanity.  read more 

Both involve fighting off supernatural beings in Giant Mecha, and it does have some elements of dark psychological moments. Scenario is the same since it is set on a similar timeline as well as having a post-apocalyptic environment. 

Both shows involve a predominantly female cast combating alien lifeforms. The use of technology is an integral component in both series. 

Both are mecha series with a prominently female cast and a bait-and-switch beginning. 

Both are about group who work for self interest rather then working together to stop the real threat of the Monsters. 

One word "Muv-Luv", they may have a very different genre and belong to different "universe", but Akane Maniax takes place in Muv-Luv universe but in Gouda perspective (it's a prequel to the Muv-Luv VN where Meiya hasn't transferred yet). Meanwhile Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse takes place in Muv-Luv Alternative universe but in Yui perspective. Only Hardcore Muv-Luv VN fans want to watch all of this kind of anime LOL 

- Both have unknown very strong enemy, that almost defeated humanity. - CGI action scenes. - Similar atmosphere of despair, though Muv-Luv is a bit darker than Ars Nova. 

In essence, both series adopt the setting of a futuristic world where the usage of mecha is a tool that strikes both fear and intimidation to enemies. The main male protagonist in both series gets caught up in various events and seemingly witnesses violence and horror from them. There are also science fiction/fantasy themes that are not normal or from what we see in our every day lives. Among other factors, both series also have drama involving various factions of their worlds. 

Both series faces off against an alien race that threatens humans lives with two female protagonists fighting against them. (SCI-FI) Total Eclipse has the Tactical Surface Fighters to stop the BETA, and Senki Zesshou Symphogear has the Symphogear to stop the Noise. Senki Z also has a great soundtrack and the two protagonists for both series are fated to fight with each other. 

Both have Mech genre... Both have a creature of some sort (Alien like) that they have to fight against Both main characters have experience in some way of controlling the mech suit 

Both are set in a world where monster-like aliens have invaded the Earth and bringing humanity to the brink of extinction. Humanity fights them back in giant mechas. Also, the human world is not entirely united as one to fight off the aliens together. 

Both set in apocalypse context. Main character both surround by multiple girls. Characters from both show forget about what world has become in later episode/OVA 

In both anime there are fights between Mecha VS monsters, Sometimes there are also fights between humans, One of the things that changes is that Synduality Noir is more comedy than Muv-Luv Alternative 

both humanity is pushed to the brink of extinction both have monsters eating humans Xenosaga doesnt use mechs but a powerful android and warships 

In some ways, these two series are a bit similar as I'm watching them. Both series involves the usage of mecha and military weaponry in a futuristic like world. Both series' main protagonist are self confident in their abilities. Both series' main female protagonist has a dark past that they are not welling to share with others easily. Both series has a lot of action, drama, some comedy, and also hints of romance.  

Both series deals with military usage of mecha robots fighting for something. Both series are very similar, especially the charachters. For those of you who are into action, mecha and looking for romance (love triangle), then these animes are must-watches. Similarities: - Main characters consists of 1 male protagonist and 2 female protagonists. Sagara Sosuke = Bridges Yuuya (Male protagonist are very similar in charachter design) Chidori Kaname = Takamura Yui (Main heroine) Testarossa Teletha = Barchenowa Cryska (2nd main heroine) - Both series involves "boy saves girl(s)" - Main charachters friends/comrades are very alike, and almost identical in some ways. - Mecha designs and its fights are very similar - Romance = love triangle in both series - Both main male protagonists are raised to be hardcore military soldier and are skilled fighters Differences: - MLA TE revolves around mecha robots vs aliens - FMP revolves around mecha vs mecha - FMP consists school setting sometime between (FMP side story focus on school) - 2 different stories. Basically, imagine the charachters in 2 different mecha-worlds.  read more 

Both are animes where humans fight against alien life forms in order to save earth. Similarities -both animes have human fight against aliens -futuristic theme -action/horror genres -both have characters with romantic relationship potential which will develop in the future -bothe have special units to save earth Disimilarities -muv-luv is mecha human vs alien where terra formars is hybrid/mutated insect human vs mutated cockroaches -battles of muv luv is on earth where terra is on mars Hope you enjoy!! 

Similarities: Both have the same sci-fi, mech and action genre. Both involves space invaders invading earth. Both involves school age teens piloting mechs. Dissimilarities: One is set in an alternate timeline where 21st century is yet to come. while the other is already in an alternate future. The main character in the other anime is a girl, while in the other one is a boy. One only involves 3 mechs while in the other anime involves a lot of mechs. I've already dropped the other one, while the other, I'm yet to give it a benefit of a doubt.

Both series about fight with similar enemies reminiscent big insects. In Chrome Shelled Regios they are called "Beasts" and in Muv-Luv Alternative they are called "Alliens". 

Aliens are attacking Earth and trying to take over and destroy everything but humanity tries to find ways to fight back. Both anime are sci-fi, dark and have similar Anime styles. 

Does one choose to never cry again or does one choose to find someone to protect. Earth is being invaded by aliens and a choice has to be made about whether to fight or not, or just give up on the world entirely. 

Aliens attack Earth and they use pilots in mechas to force back the invasion. Similar color scheme and lots of angst. 

Similarities: -Mechas -Alien invasion -Romance (in a sort) They both have training academies for young people to train as pilots for mechas. They even use the same type of weaponry to fend off against alien invasions of Earth. 

Similarities: Both have the same sic-fi, mech, action genre. Both involves schools girls piloting mechs. Both involves the earth being invaded by extra terrestrial beings. Dissimilarities: The school girls in the other anime were drafted into service, while in the other anime the schools girls volunteer to be in the service. The mechs in the other anime were extra terrestrial in origin, while in the other anime the mechs were built on earth. There were only 3 mechs involved in the fighting of extraterrestrial invaders, while in the other anime there were a lot involved in the defense of earth. I've dropped the other anime while I'm yet to see if the other one will interest me to follow it through.  read more 

Both series contain the theme of mecha battle involving women with dominant roles as the pilots. Both series contain comedy (more so in Dual), action, drama, and also some tragedy.  

Both series features the usage of mecha in a more futuristic setting with technology. Both series' main protagonist are pilots of mecha and part of an organization. Both series contains plenty of action, drama, and as well as some comedy to go along with the story.  

This show reminded me a lot of Gunbuster. The aliens are similar, and the fanservice is integrated into mech battles. However, Total Eclipse is more gruelsome and graphic, and doesn't have the super robot feel good elements nearly as much 

A bait-and-switch first episode (first two episodes in TE's case) and the fact that anyone can die in the gritty setting is in both series. Both have an alien (not in the extraterrestrial sense) force that humans fight against but MLA: TE obviously goes in a different direction with the mecha/mecha and mecha/alien combat while GR: Z is human/supernatural combat. 

Both series deals with a futuristic world where the use of mecha has become common as part of the military. As such, both series contains military themes involving many of the characters. Both series has strong female protagonists as well as dominant male protagonist who are skilled with firearms and what they do. Both series contain a lot of action scenes, drama, some comedy, and at the same time emotional factors as the episodes drags on. There is also a background mystery involving the series and its characters especially regarding some of their past events. Both series also contains violence that details the more science fiction setting as well as the dangers the characters face each day in the military. read more
