The author of Attack on Titan, Hajime Isayama, said the following in an interview: "My earliest inspiration was the adult game Muv-Luv Alternative, in which aliens invade and humankind is on the brink of annihilation."
Total Eclipse is a spin-off of what Isayama is referring to, but the influence was blatantly obvious in episode two: a cast of characters were introduced and then brutally killed off in quick succession; one being eaten in gruesome fashion in front of a despairing friend. HOWEVER, later the series goes 'full harem' and there is very little additional alien bug slaughter. In contrast to Shingeki, it does NOT convince as

Mankind faces enemies that eat human beings. Both are similar due to the gruesome nature and fear that the heroes have to face while trying to prevent imminent human extinction. Protagonists have lost loved ones (family/friends) in the first few episodes in the most gruesome way to the point that it will probably mentally scar them for life .

Series with gruesome battles and characters dying left right and center. It's hard to say 'Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse' has a better plot than 'Shingeki no Kyojin' cause come on, this series is focused more on a harem side of things where the MC is quite thick-headed and is oblivious to the feelings all the girls have for him even though there's killing involved.
In 'Shingeki no Kyojin', you really could connect with a lot of the characters (even minor ones) and feel their hardship for even a short amount of time. The surprises you get from the twist will always leave you on the

The same mankind destruction. But Total Eclipse have more boops and asses than Shingeki.
Both animes revolve around humankind fighting against extinction against an disgusting and repulsive lifeform that eats humans. The animes are both dark for this reason though Shingeki shows more of the gore than Muv-Luv.

Attack on Titan is the anime that Muv-Luv should have been, and to be fair for the first two episodes it was. Both are set in a world where Humanity is on the brink of extinction due to the overwhelming strength of a huge number of man eating creatures (the BETA in Muv-Luv, Titans in AoT). Cue lots of dark gruesome action, strong and unsettling emotional moments and a people who're push right to the brink of humanity (altho, again, this is only true for the first two episodes of Muv-Luv).
