Although with Sidonia you do lose the epic bodysuits, almost entirely female cast and more blunt harem elements. Its certainly worth watching if you want a more mature telling of what it might be like if humanity found itself pushed to the brink.

That is only comparing with the subpar MLA TE animation, Sidonia is but a baby to watch true despair MLA is all about.
So no, ML series takes it material seriously, you just saw a spin off that is far from the best.
