sasuke's book wasn't necessary. itachi's books were amazing and gave a new insight into his backstory and really fleshed out his characters inner turmoil much more than in the anime. the English translation had a few doubled words and misspellings but it didn't take anything away from how good it was.
the books looked into alot more than i thought they would and they changed my opinion on the tsukiyomi. the book made me realise that it is probably not a good thing to have happen to the world while during the anime i was confused as to why people opposed it so much

After reading all three books, I can only recommend the first two. Not that Sasuke Shinden was bad, but in terms of how much it adds to the Naruto franchise, it came off as fluff that wasn't needed. Only look into that one if you're a huge Sasuke fan.
With that being said, this review will primarily be aimed at Itachi's two Shinden novels, which were quite enjoyable overall and something I didn't know I needed until reading them. These novels allow for us to delve into Itachi's head. We're given explanations for his actions in the actual manga, but these books humanize him more and ... Mar 26, 2022
the prose is most effective when dealing with visual imagery or describing a visual scene, hardly surprising coming from the mind of a mangaka who likely thinks in images. the emotional moments are hardhitting even if you try to be a cynic and close yourself off to them and despite all the narrative problems up to this point. it's a mess of a story, but centering it on the emotional development (and surrender of dreams) of a young man torn between so many influences is the best choice these novels ever make. itachi is a good character, unrealistically powerful but soberingly emotional and deeply confused.

Whether the original work is good or bad, if it has a light novel spin-off, that spin-off is almost always weaker than the parent title. As low as my expectations were, turns out this is not the case with Naruto Shinden. Though I should probably disclose right from the start that I’m not exactly a fan of the Naruto franchise.
The first two volumes technically aren’t a new story – they are expanded, more detailed (and a bit changed) events that we already know happened. So perhaps don’t read beyond this point if you don’t want to get spoilers for Naruto, a story that I ... Jun 9, 2017
To be totally honest, I wasn't expecting to enjoy these books as much as I did. I guess I just wasn't sure WHY I was reading these ones, if that makes sense. The Hiden light novels felt like they had more of a purpose. (At least at the time I was reading them, they hadn't been animated yet.) Those ones took place in the future from the series, gave us a sense of what happened between the time of Naruto's end and Boruto's beginning. The Shinden novels (the first two, anyway) are different.
We already saw Itachi's story. Well, I'm sure a lot of people ... Aug 3, 2018
The Itachi Shinden novels are definitely worth the read. I can't say the same for Sasuke Shinden, though.
Itachi Shinden, as most of long-time Naruto fans may think, is just narrating how Itachi eventually got to the decision of killing his own clan. There's actually more to it than that. Not only does the novel dwell more on what Itachi was thinking at the time, but it also gives new perspectives to characters like Fugaku (Itachi's father) and even Shisui. How Shisui's family is doing and how he awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan is explained in the novels, for example. How Shisui died in the novels is ... |
