As I was reading the first chapter, I was thinking, Is this just a typical seinen manga about some random person travelling to another world? But boy, was I wrong about this one. It illustrated the meaning of how it was to be downgraded by society but with the essence of fantasy in a different world.

I was captivated by the story. It started with a simple cliché, that somehow lead into something much greater that makes me love this manga so much. It demonstrated the meaning of betrayal and what it meant ... to be isolated and hated by others, and the meaning of warmth, strength and love, all in a few chapters.

The art is beautifully illustrated to capture most of what is showcased in this manga, but I believe it doesn`t really capture a true battle scene. However, it was able to fully illustrate the characters emotions and feelings; in all aspects. Like Raphtalia`s loyalty and respect towards Naofumi, and Naofumi`s depression and lack of love in the world; for he was being hated by many around him.

As Naofumi started as an ordinary person and has now evolved into the new person he is, I believe he went through massive events that helped change his character throughout the story. He was betrayed and played by a thief and degraded by those around him, and that rendered him unable to see and enjoy the beauty of life. But that all changed as he met Rapthalia, who later becomes his slave, as he is unable to wield weapons other than his shield.

After the harsh life Raphtalia has lead so far, she was bought by Naofumi, the shield hero. She was afraid of killing monsters at first, but she learned to trust Naofumi and feel needed as she was not treated so before. She tries her best to become of good use to Naofumi, as she learns that he will be the one to protect the people during the Calamity. She goes under a giant growth spurt, and because of that attracts danger to Naofumi but that allows him to be able to experience and see the beauty of the world.

I, personally enjoyed this manga, and those hoping to read the manga, I will tell you this manga has its ups and downs but its REALLY worth it. Even with 8 chapters translated so far, it really surpassed some seinen mangas with more than 20 chapters out there.

This is my first review and I really hope I help anyone looking for insight on this manga. I will portray my own thoughts as a critic and hopefully you agree with and enjoy reading my review.

Story: 8.5
A seinen fantasy manga about a boy who get sucked into a fantasy game-like world full of magic and swordplay. Right from the start I can't say I haven't seen this before in a seinen manga. My first though was "ugh...here we go again" but there is a lot more to it than that. The story really drives that harshness of society, betrayal, and ... the importance of relying on someone. I have to say that the turn of events and journey of the main characters deserves at least an 7, the only thing holding it back being unoriginal. I give the story an 8.5 for it really keeps readers engaged and has incredible flow that doesnt skip a beat and makes everything happening quite logical even though the story itself is a fantasy genre.

Here in 2014 I can say the artwork for manga has gone up considerably in the last few years and unfortunatley...so have the standards. The art in this manga is very clear and well detailed. Did I read the first chapter go " holy F@$% this art is @#$%ing amazing"....no I didn't. I dont really think you can really give art a 10 because you know...its art..... so ill give it an 8 because thats what it is....."very good", this is not a bad thing it is only because nothing stood out in terms of art so dont take it the wrong way.

Character: 9
Ok, so this category right here is why I like Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari as much as I do. Here's why;
1. The characters themselves are quite unique. Im not talking just about the two main characters you'll automatically fall in love with but some of the side characters are really unique as well. Some are hateful and become compassionate, while some are compassionate and become hateful. There are characters that will make you smile and some that will make you furious. I think that when characters bring out emotions within a reader, you have something quite special.
2. The interactions between the characters is logical, realistic, and touching. The thought process of the characters is logical as nothing the characters do doesn't make sense. The interaction between the two main characters is so good and well though-out it really makes this manga what it is.
The characters make you feel and it's almost as if they are real people. For this reason I give it a 9.

I really enjoyed being played by this author. He starts out generic and just rips up you emotions in a few chapters. It was awesome. Please do yourself a favor and read it. Please

This manga is nothing revolutionary, but it is something special. I really believe this story belongs somewhere between very good and great. This manga is still in progress so hopeful they can bring it above the great line with the upcoming chapters. I can tell you one thing last thing.

If you finish this manga, I guarantee you'll want to read more.

Ever since the first chapter was released, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari has been increasing exponentially in popularity. It is quickly rising up the ranks and it isn't very hard to see why.

Story: 9

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is a story of betrayal, revenge, & redemption. The story follows Naofumi Iwatani as he is suddenly brought to another world. There he is deemed as the shield hero, the weakest of the 4 heroes due to lack of attacking power. Because of that, no one wants to be his companion and what's worse is, he's eventually betrayed and framed. Scorned and loathed by the people who ... were supposed to be his allies and the people who brought him in the first place, the once happy and caring otaku is now a mistrusting anti-hero hellbent on revenge.

As time goes on, he finds people who actually place their faith in him and see him as a hero. However, as a result of being betrayed, it's going to take a lot of work, before he warms up to anyone. Of course, he is slowly becoming the person he used to be. But there's still one problem, the fact of the matter is, he was betrayed and ridiculed. Who wouldn't be mad after those events? Will he truly live up to the name of a hero? Or will his desire for revenge never subside? Join Naofumi as he embarks on a journey to discover what it truly means, to be in a marching band. Sorry, I just couldn't control myself. Jokes aside, you will experience the adventure of a lifetime as Naofumi fluctuates between the borders of wanting to protect innocent citizens & his companions and wanting to kill those he hates with all his heart.

The story has plenty of action and brutal ones at that. Shield Hero (what I'll call the manga from now) isn't as soft as to not show the likes of blood & decapitation. It's just one big thrill ride; you anxiously wait for those who betrayed him to be killed in the worst ways possible. Nothing of the sort has happened so far, but it only makes your interest stronger. Now, you just can't wait for that time to come.

Just by reading the synopsis, you can already tell, there's going to be drama and there certainly is. We are given back-stories, current situations, etc. It makes for more compelling characters and senseless action is never fun.

Romance is definitely present in the manga. Currently, we only have things like blushing, but soon enough, you will get your ever so nice romance. At this rate, it seems like it's going to be a harem, so if that's not your cup of tea, I'd get off the train now.

Like every story, Shield Hero has flaws. The most one prominent one being that a lot of things that happen are cliche. You could even say it's predictable. But don't you tell me you don't want a heart-warming after everything the protagonist goes through. You know you want that cliche yet adorable moment. So it's flaw may not be as bad as it seems, it doesn't deteriorate the quality of the story by that much.

To sum things up, Shield Hero is a roller-coaster of emotions, supplier of top notch action, & generous giver of sweet romance.

Art: 9

The art has a shoujo feel to it. You can't deny that the main guys were drawn to be good looking and the main female lead has remnants of common female shoujo eyes. It's not a bad thing though, the art is actually great. The characters, the fights, the backgrounds, and especially Naofumi's feelings. Whenever he's pissed or angry, his face really shows it. You can tell how mad he is. You get a sense of his blood-lust.

Character: 9

I don't think the plot is the main reason as to why the manga got so popular, the plot isn't exactly new. With that being said, I'd give that award to the characters.

Naofumi isn't your typical shounen protagonist. He isn't crazy altruistic, he has a dark side filled with thoughts of revenge and selfishness. Yet, deep down, he's a caring guy. He just doesn't want to show it, in fear of being betrayed again. In short, Naofumi is a breath of fresh air.

Raphtalia, our main female protagonist, is a great female lead. She's caring and adorable. She's afraid of dying, but isn't afraid of fighting. It's nice to see a female lead who isn't completely useless. She's just a strong and nice girl who'd do anything for Naofumi.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. Those who believed Naofumi committed heinous acts are absolutely hated by the readers. I hate them too, but if you really think it about it, their actions only make them human. Yeah, I hate those guys with every fiber of my being, but who's to say I wouldn't have reacted the same way they did? That goes for all of us. I'm sure a majority of us would've ended up as the enemies of Naofumi too. Everyone knows there's technically no benefits in helping someone who's ostracized and that's why bystanding is a common problem. The only difference between what happened in Shield Hero and what happens in real life is the supernatural aspect. Aside from that, their personalities, thoughts, and actions are all realistic.

While not every character is likable, they are all well-written and for that, I will give this section a 9 by not including my personal feelings.

Overall: 9

Shield Hero is a riveting tale of betrayal, revenge, redemption, faith, love, action, and so much more. I assure you, reading Shield Hero is simply a wonderful experience. The story is so enticing, Naofumi's feelings of revenge will be passed on to you. You will be that close with the characters of the story.

There are two things I have heard about this story. Frist, that this is SAO done right, and secondly, that it's got an interesting main character who, thanks to a betrayal at the beginning of the story, becomes an untrusting bitter person. Unfortunately, the manga failed to live up to my (not particularly high) expectations. I have read 25 chapters, but I have little desire to continue. I would like to advise caution to everyone, who wishes to read it because, in my opinion, this manga is not worth more than 4 overall.

Let's start with the main hero. In light of the synopsis, I've expected ... him to be a more atypical shonen protagonist, someone who is more of a man of reason, kind of amoral, thanks to what happened to him. Don't be deceived, however, he is as impulsive and as much of a good guy as they come, in the end, he always saves the day. He is just a brooding asshole all the time, outright not listening to reason, which is somewhat understandable, but that doesn't make it less aggravating to watch. Moreover, he isn't all that consistent, he is Ok with some rather suspicious stuff, only to be so untrusting later, that he wouldn't even hear someone out. That's the thing, he seems to be more untrusting when the story needs him to be, more than when it would actually make sense.

This is one of the biggest problems with the story, it reeks of contrivance. Everything has such a convenient explanation. One of the main hooks of the story is the dark and edgy tone set up at the beginning, but funnily enough, that is all but gone by chapter 25. The manga had a strong first few chapter, and I thought: "Well, this might just go somewhere interesting." It didn't, by chapter 25 it became a completely run of the mill fantasy story.

This is where my disappointment stems from, I was more intrigued by the possibilities that all the dark and edgy staff can lead, rather than the actual pain and suffering that it depicts. And with it turning out to be more self-indulgent, it only strengthens the impression that the story just played the ever so convenient (and somewhat cheap) empathy card. I don't personally mind if something is emotionally manipulative, as long as it leads somewhere interesting, after all this is one of the reasons why we read these stories. However without any catharsis, conclusion, or more intriguing plot line to reward my emotional investment, the only thing I am left with is the feeling of being cheated, and ultimately... disappointed.

Just to illustrate my problems with the manga I am going to talk about ch.12 and 13, some spoilers ahead. So in ch. 12 they get attacked by a zombie dragon, and Firo gets crashed in the dragon's jaw, you can see the blood and all, but I am just sitting there unshocked and thinking: "I don't think they have the guts to pull this off, they will probably find a convenient explanation, as to how she survived". In ch.13 we find Firo alive and well, and turns out the blood we saw was actually her lunch, tomatoes... I seriously laughed out loud at that explanation. Also in these chapters when we see Firo "die" and all hope seems lost, the main hero starts hearing an ominous dark voice that offers him power, with which he defeats the dragon, but he momentarily loses himself in the flames of wrath of this newfound power. You mean he has some kind of dark power residing in him, that he can pull out of his ass at critical moments, which offers him immeasurable strength in exchange for his sanity? I wonder where I saw something similar... *cough* Naruto... *cough* Bleach. In these short chapters the manga not only established that it has no guts or intentions of killing any of the characters, which would not necessarily be a problem, if it wouldn't try to lead us to believe otherwise, since the story supposed to have a darker tone, but it also establishes that we can expect random asspull powerups whenever the heroes or the story requires it. In just two short chapters the narrative fucked itself pretty hard, I mean... smashed tomatoes... how am I supposed to take any of this seriously, after something like that?

I consider this manga to be the kind of "turn your brain off" story. Unlike most people, I don't use this label on fun and mindless stories, but on ones where you shouldn't think too hard about the plot. Because the more you think about the plot, the less sense it makes. Did anyone think about why the MC was betrayed in the first place? On how Rapthalia grows a more mature body by leveling up and also becoming more mature in the mind, or why this world needs the heroes when regular residents can level up and become powerful just as fine? Now, I am not someone who couldn’t suspend his disbelief for even a minute, I actually did it at the beginning, but when my overall enjoyment drops significantly, these sort of questions inevitably starts popping up.

I don't really know what went wrong with this manga, I have no idea how faithfully it follows the novel, I didn't read that. Perhaps the author had a good and dark idea about how to kick off the story but didn't know how to follow it up, or maybe he just wanted to create a good old-fashioned fantasy with a unique twist, but couldn't execute it well. The only good thing a can tell about the story is that it moves at a reasonable pace, although it was on the brink of becoming boring by the time I gave up.

As for the upcoming anime adaptation, I think it will flop, it won’t work in a post Re: Zero world. What do I mean by that? The fact that Shield Hero’s main draw, the "unique" twist, is the dark and edgy „sufferporn” that happens at the beginning, means it will inevitably be compared to Re: Zero and that show portrayed the suffering and failure (some would call it sufferporn) much better and more consistently.

I could go on, but to sum it up, Shield Hero has a strong start, that quickly becomes a completely run off the mill shonen action-adventure fantasy. It isn't unique in any notable way, nor its story or its characters are particularly deep and it's misleading dark beginning can easily lead to disappointment.

As for me personally, I think I put it on on-hold and see what the anime will make of it. Depending on that I may or may not pick it up at a later date.

Now before reading this series, i was skeptic.At first i thought it was your regular summoned MC with overpowered abilities and destined to save the world. And seeing how the MC gets Shield makes me think that his shield might contain some overpowered abilities,but i was wrong, it caught me off guard and the way the personality of the main character did a 180 completely surprise me

As i have thought i was completely caught of guard by the series and how the story takes another route.You thought this is gonna be another overpowered MC? nope you are wrong the MC is completely powerless ... without companions and how the story made the three other heroes look like they took a class for Assholelogy is astonishing.

I really like how the art style looks and how it captures the emotions of each characters and how you can feel their emotions through it

Naofumi is a completely new MC in my eyes, first i thought that innocent smile look of Naofumi before he got betrayed was a surprise to me, his character can make me relate on how would react in his situation.You can say that he is a character force to fight, and he may look scary and bad,only because he is tainted, but inside he is a kind guy.

The other Heroes are the ones you really wanna beat up, the way they are portrayed is great, you can almost feel the hatred and the other characters like the King and The Princess is just awful to look at because of their actions.

Waste of time...
Besides starting as your generic edgy isekai manga the characters are just white and black, never gray.
MC will be the " good guy " who had to endure injustice. Meanwhile all the other characters will be jerks. They won't ever have any single redeeming quality.
Okay so let me explain a little bit further. Our MC is transferred into this stupid world with RPG elements (because otherwise how would you ride on isekai wave right?) along with 3 other people as heroes. I said heroes but only MC would be called hero. The other 3 are just useless piece of shi-
Well ... nevermind, I just find this wrong. They all should have been main characters of this story but instead they are all useless in battles and their personalities are trash.
The only good character is our almighty MC being a Gary Stu in every chapter of the series. Oh also let me tell you some of the MC's traits
-He is very good at cooking (because why not)
-Alcohol never affects him no matter how much he takes (he should have died at this point but no he didn't even get drunk)
-He is super strong and will gain stupid skills all the time that will save his ass later.

They have tried to make an edgy isekai but failed so they just threw a few "waifu" characters. Avoid this series

Starting off in the summer of 2014, I was a very bored person. I had no job, not much to do, and overall I was pretty bored. Then however after browsing around on my manga app for my tablet, I noticed that there was a new manga that I hadn't seen before; Tate No Yuusha No Nariagari.

At the time, there was only three chapters, so there wasn't much to go off of, but those three chapters alone, hooked me in for a ride I wasn't expecting. A ride that would lead me to probably, my favorite series in all of manga. (Just a little heads ... up, much of my reasoning is backed by the light novel, so bear with me here. Also, some minor spoilers ahead.)

Story - 10
Starting off, you wouldn't expect much from the introduction; main character is forced into another world and is probably going to be wanting to get out because they are home sick. Well, that's a big FAT NO. It turns out that our main character, Naofumi, is off to a bad start which only gets worse as time goes on. The reasoning behind this bad start is quite unknown, in fact at the time of writing this, the manga itself hasn't even explained it in detail... yet.
So, starting off, we are looking at a main character who is broken and betrayed RIGHT at the start of his journey which sounds a bit cliche in a way, yet the manga pulls it off in unique way that eventually leads to quite possibly what Log Horizon would look like if you added in the corrupt politicians, plague, famine, death, etc etc. and the fact that the main character has a bit of a sadistic streak. So for that reason, and for what's coming up ahead, I score this section a 10/10.

Art - 9
For as much as I would like to give this section a 10/10, the art itself isn't all that unique. I mean yes, it's quite hilarious to see a manga version of (and I'm not lying here) Chocobos, and to see the occasional comedic relief panel, but for a manga that started in 2014 and is still on going here a year later with periodic releases of every month or twice a month (at least from what I can find raw or no), it's great, but not enough to give it a 10... Mostly because color pages are far and few between but are REALLY well done when seen.

Characters - 10
This is BY FAR the most interesting part of the story. The characters are unique in every sense imaginable, even the filler ones such as villagers have a unique story to them. Naofumi seems to be your typical Shounen character that would later develop into a Seinin guru of sorts, but they sort of skipped that whole starting off easy part. At first he seems hopeful and cheerful, but not even into the third chapter, that character is almost NEVER seen again. Right off the bat, our main character goes from happy, "Cool, I'm in a game!" main character to one that borders sadistic, yet caring and charismatic at the same time. This is especially shown when we meet our female lead Ralphtalia who would need a whole other section of her own when it comes to her development and relationship with our main character, but to keep it short and sweet: innocent, yet VERY "persuasive", even to the point she sometimes scares Naofumi. Then there's Firo who is also unique, however explaining her would spoil the fun in finding out who this third person of the main trio is.

Now that I've given a small overhead view of the main cast, looking over to the other 99.9% of the world of Tate No Yuusha No Nariagari, you have your run of the mill characters such as a black smith Naoufumi frequents who has quite the interesting back story, the magic shop owner, the apothecary, and the masochistic slave dealer that Naofumi has more than one run in with. All of whom have unique stories to them, and you begin to understand them more as the story progresses. (Sorry, but a lot of these things will be explained in later chapters, however there are subtle hints within what's out there at the moment.)

With the main story, it is QUITE clear people dislike... Actually, to be blunt, they HATE Naofumi, in fact, it gets to the point, the reader themselves pity him and grow to dislike the characters that hate Naofumi. However it gives a proper insight to how people think; "Our ruler says he is bad, so he must be bad." mob mentality, or as I prefer to call them, "Sheeple" since most of them, unless some sort of situation or event happens, have the same dislike of Naofumi as the ruler does. In fact the reasoning why this all started though, stems BEFORE chapter 1, however there's some pretty large spoilers in there, so I'll let the reader find out for their own... When the manga puts a spot light on it other than the small clues it gives out.

Enjoyment - 10
So as someone who was bored when they started this series, it would be fair to claim that there's a bit of bias as I write this section of the review, however anyone who has read the manga and/or the light/web novel (I am guilty of all three here...), would agree 100% that the story pulls you in within the first two or three chapters. It gets to the point, and we aren't just reading the manga, we are part of the manga and experiencing it first hand.
In fact, for me personally, it's gotten to the point that if there's no new chapters, I hunt down the raws for the manga, just so I can see how the story is progressing in the manga because I love this manga and series so much. It's one heck of a ride, and I hope people won't bail on it because of how long it takes in between chapters, which is reasonable considering most chapters are 35-50 pages a pop.

Overall - 10
Aside from the fact that the art is great looking, but common for the current time, this manga scores 10/10 across the board for me. The story is captivating and you can't put it down... well unless you reach chapter 16 since that's the latest chapter, but in a lot of cases people would go to Baka Tsuki to read the light novel online because the manga is slow to update, but it's glorious when it does.

The characters are amazing and unique, and you begin to understand them right off the bat, be it the Shield Hero Naofumi or the slave Ralphtalia, the chocobo Firo, or even John/Jane Doe that talks to any one of the trio since all of them have a unique story to be told, which makes it all the more enjoyable since it really feels like a JRPG or MMORPG where every character has something to say or tell.

So in the end, I score this series 10 out of 10 as the manga has plenty to offer, and if that's not enough the 378 chapter light novel that tells the ENTIRE story.

Also, for those who want a tl;dr version of this review: Read it, it's worth your time.

Debunking some common critiques about Shield Hero I've heard:

> Too edgy
I've read quite the few isekais and watched SAO, etc because these are literally the only types of manga that get translated on mangadex and there's nothing else new to read at times. Given the scenario where an isekai protagonist is framed for something they didn't do, the behavior that follows are:

1: Thinking reaction: Despite everyone thinking I did it, I can't hate them since they're misinformed.

2: Feeling reaction: I hate everyone who is thinking I did it without even listening to my side of the story.

and 99.9% of isekai protagonists fall into #1. Like ... Kirito(SAO), they're bland. They don't hold grudges, they aren't spiteful, and they just give "neutrally correct" responses to the situations they come across.

Shield Hero does #2 instead which is just more fun and entertaining given the world he's in. Is it flawed thinking that he's pissy at everyone despite knowing they're misinformed? Yes, and this is the point. Raw emotion reactions are more relatable and more human than "thinking". What thinking implies is time, foresight, and optimism, something that Naofumi just doesn't have given how fast this all happened and how grim the future looks with a never ending cycle of "if I can't kill monsters, I can't get level up, which means I can't get gold to get more powerful items so I can kill monsters".

> Power fantasy
If you actually pay attention, there are quite the few panels where we see lots of studying and experimenting. He got to where he is now because of hard work! Not being a beta tester, not being born special/gifted. I do admit the "dark powers" emanating from the shield is a bit ehhh, but whenever he uses it, it bites him back in the end so its fair

> Loli harem
Ralphtalia and Firo, for the 4-5 times where they are suggestive about romance, ends and gets cut off in 1-2 pages with Naofumi reiterating Ralphtalia is his daughter, etc. 67 chapters in and there has not been entire arcs/chapters, teasing any romantic affection. If there were even 1-2 chapters on it, that's still mathematically 0.02% of the entire series. I didn't actually notice this was a thing because I was more drawn into how Naofumi would survive in the world.

What I do agree on:
-Giving Naofumi too many offensive powers... it's a missed opportunity exploring more clever ways defense can be warped into offense.

Overall I enjoyed reading the series. It has a nice flow of action and exploring the scenery of an mmorpg world.

Good point of this manga:
#story: one thing that i like from being in 2014 is, the author become more creative and excellent at elaborating plot line, as it is become eminent that the plot of this manga had a bright future of plot, though i still don't know about the next chapters, but definetly i will wait it to release soon.
#art: now days art is sky and earth comparision, escpecially with this kind of art, it's hard in 2010 to found manga like this, but suddenly it burst up ... in 2014. well done 2014 manga
# Characters: if you feeling fucked up with normal manga, that only contain grow up, stronger, then lose, then training , then win, this manga is recommended for you, as the characters had a promising future, with the darkness in the hearth, yet it captivating us by how hard to become a useless bum shield hero. But still, it's still doing his best to do whatever he can do. this manga is likeable for everyone

Story and characters : the story about an average Otaku who is drawn to a world and becomes a hero and then is betrayed and becomes a hatefull cold amazing human being , One of the best traits about this novel/manga is that the protagonist is a character ... with so many human flaws , you sense he is a bastard from earth ,Not an imaginary character who is so Full of shit, the rest of the characters are unique in their own way breaking the forth wall sometimes , from a swindling merchant to a hero with big family .
The anime references are massive in this novel, specially those of the fist of the north star.Characters break into those with a natural flow , the writer has an amazing ability , and i cant wait for his next work.

most of my enjoyment came from FIROO-TANN !!! AND MOTOYASO , amazing characters, with amazing reactions, it was really fun to read and interact with each action , The romance only at the end, not ruining the story with uncalled for barfing romance , filled with heartwarming =chapters .

But!! the LN and Web Novel is HUGE!!
Starting with this , The web novel is like the unattended side of the story filled with many events and things that you think is a waste of time, its funny but you will get to say what am I doing around vol 7-vol 12 .

The WN is full of thorns but reading it to the end is worth it as it is fully translated on websites and easy to get,the story if finished and its one hell of an ending , The ending in LN and Spine of story is almost the same , so it is a good read.

FOR THE LIGHT NOVEL: (Spoilers alert)
Its currently on vol 6 JP and vol4 ENG, The story branches around the vol 2 in the LN AND MANGA as Naofumi goes across the borders to meet Raphs previous owner and get kiel (Loinclothed dog ) freed , which didnt happen in the WN as he bought Kiel from the slave dealer, Meeting FItoria the queen of filorials there ,who forces them to reconcile with the heroes which did not happen in the WN as She just tests Firos growth as a FILORIAL QUEEN.
I found info about meeting a vassal hero ,one of the seven heroes in cal mira island around vol4 which did not happen in The WN.

SIMPLY: the web novel had many flaws such as not introducing the seven heroes earlier or not even giving info on them until later volumes, they needed to introduce new characters around vol4 and that change was made in the LN , Naofumi Never went to silt wilt or another demi human land (except zeltbur ) which was frustrating for me and looked like flaw for me ,After saying he would visit so many times, I hope they change that in the LN as they are solving so many flaws.

This story is awesomesauce! Many stories have problems with constantly screwing over their hero but this one has no such qualms. The main character practically wakes up and gets punched in the dong just for existing. While you might feel bad for him and wish Thor to smite the villains with lightning's justice, it helps keep the reader guessing and keep tension. Also not to cause any spoilers but the series depicts what being accused of a certain crime is like for an innocent.

There is however a few problems with this series. The biggest one is the current love interest is a little girl. ... If you didn't see this coming you haven't read enough manga but the little ten year old girl that gets saved by the main character gets a crush on him. The author then attempts to solve this by aging her body...which means she's mentally still a child...which she even says. WTF are you serious? I'm sorry but no matter what voodoo bs you try and pull she is still a ten year old that hit puberty way too quickly, 13 going on 30 style. That is the definition of jailbait, just don't.

Overall I will sing the praises of this series with opera style gusto. I just hope it doesn't go the way I'm thinking it might go romantically, but then this series has already surprised me once so it could very easily do it again.

Some people consider this as a somewhat typical storyline.
The "hero" is taken from his world to another to fight against "Waves" of monsters that spawn once an hourglass in the center of the town turns to 0.
It's a manga with heavy RPG elements and a pretty good plot.

The art is amazing.
Characters are well drawn, with beautiful backgrounds.
The action is clean, and I love the way the armor and weapons of the different heroes are depicted.

The main character is far from the typical selfless hero.
He's cynical with a negative outlook on the world around him.
Raphtalia, the "slave" he purchased has trauma from being a survivor of the Waves.
The main "antagonists" are indeed the monsters in the Wave, but there's another side for the antagonists, which you'll quickly find out.

This is an amazing manga. It's an RPG fantasy with amazing art, great characters, and a pretty good story even if it's somewhat cliché.
It's a must-read for everyone.

With the release of the anime adaptation (with an amazing first episode btw) I finally decided to give Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari a read. I personally really enjoy Isekais and the first few chapters are one of the best out there for the Isekai genre. The story is quite different than other Isekais out there and it got me hooked with just the first few chapters. The MCs motives and story are also something I really enjoyed.



Minor spoiler:
Sadly after the first dozen chapters I started to realize that this Manga started to become a more and more generic Isekai with the typical ... harem scenario. But that sensation soon fades away and becomes something new and fresh once again. It was still a quite an enjoyable read with a dope story and art style.


Verdict:
Giving it a solid 9/10. <3

Tate Yuusha is not your average hero story, that's what I want to emphasize from the start. If you expect things started great/awesome from the beginning, and can't tolerate a little bit drama, I suggest you to look away, as you'll be disappointed anyway. I think it's clear from the synopsis too.

Okay lets move to the actual review, I think this could be one of the best isekai(another world) stories I've read or watch until now. If you have a lot of experience in isekai anime/manga, you'll find this to be unique. This might remind you a lot to real life, where tyrant and corrupt ... scum sometimes become ruler in our world. our MC won't experience glory or rosy life in the world he's summoned into. He will face humiliation because of the scum I've mention before. But I assure you that's only in the beginning. If you think your heart can take it and don't have problem with a little bit revenge story, you should read this. Because even though the main course is about revenge, I find a lot more sweet and glorious deeds on hero of the shield journey.

That's a little bit more about the story, another strong point of this manga will be the characters. There are huge developments here, even though on few characters only. What we can see from Naofumi, Raphtalia, and some characters when they're first introduced will change greatly as the story progressing. Most of them will experience hardship, and they won't just play around with super OP ability like some other protagonist.

Finally, I will recommend this as either fantasy or drama isekai manga. I find some news that there will be anime of this, and I can't wait too see it.

Atypical male protagonist. Not stupid, not overly pure and kind, doesn't get duped easily, and so, is much less irritating to follow. Acts like a total jerk but we know he's actually a really good guy.

The main girl(s) isn't annoying at all. She's extremely strong, very sweet and doesn't act out for no reason, but expresses her opinions openly. She has a very good relationship with MC. (Platonic).

The premise is a fantasy/video game mashup but the story is executed realistically. The art is pleasant and doesn't distract from the story.

Overall the story, characters, and art are very compatible, and the premise is interesting and actually ... adds to the overall enjoyment, despite how frequently it's used in seinen and shounen.

One thing that could be said is that the story's representation of magic seems a bit silly sometimes. It seems like magic can solve basically any problem if you have enough money, and the all-encompassing power, convenient faultlessness, and ease of access to magic in the story is a bit excessive.

You would think the shameless incorporation of video game styles would take from the medieval themed manga but it doesn't. Actually the shamelessness saves it, having the characters themselves draw similarities between video games and the world, and the manga not trying to be subtle at all about the leveling system.

It was an amazing journey to be able to read and travel with the Shield hero. It was my first Web Novel and it was an eye opener. Thank you for this amazing experience. Hope the author could continue on the journey as he goes through the realm of Gods.

Do note that Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari has one of the most amazing stories that may seem norm at first but will completely change as soon as you get into it. The characters are lovable and the in depth of the world being describe leaves the reader's imagination wild. A very good storyline and ... a great moral to till the very end. I will certainly recommend this to everyone that has thread in to this genre and wants a great read.

honestly, the best I've seen this season, I love its characters, the details with which it builds its history and fights, in addition to the relationships between the protagonists, no other anime this season I could do feel the same this season, I sincerely recommend it.


I love the construction of the story, both its opening and its ending fascinates me to listen to them and I do not jump to see the chapter or when it ends.

Okay so, I just wanna say that this manga is amazing!!! I fell in love with it immediately . It is about a boy named Naofumi who was dragged into another world which is a "mmorpg". He had no one, and he was all alone in the beginning, but as he goes on his journey, he gets stronger and better.

It's an interesting and different story from all the other adventure-action series. The characters are memorable and NOT ANNOYING. The relationships seems legit and the plot is definitely outstanding. The series has some minor issues but it's nothing to fret over. The art style is good, the main characters are likable, the plot is original, and I HIGHLY recommend it.



Summary:
Our hero finds himself in a game-like world where he and some others are heroes. Unfortunately he is betrayed and turns into a "villain." With the help of some people and monsters he is able to help innocent lives when the Royal Kingdom will not. He ... remains a villain in the eyes of the public but his heart is in a good place.

Will he succumb to his rage and betrayal or stay true to himself?

Many anime/manga have the "typical summoned to another world to save it from evil" setting, but this manga is an excellent exception.


Story: 9
4 "Heroes" are summoned from Earth to serve as champions and defeat waves of monsters threatening a kingdom. Each person starts with a legendary weapon, however, the protagonist starts off with a shield! He is very quickly betrayed by a "comrade" and is cast out and treated like garbage and seen with contempt. This is a very unique part of the story, with a betrayal so quickly in the story, not usual in a genre like this. There is a slight harem ... aspect to this manga, but I feel that is unique in the way that the protagonist have different bonds with each of them, instead of just seeing them as friends.

Art: 8
I'm not too much of an art fanatic, but the best part of this art, is when the protagonist glares or is angry. You can see the menacing look in his eyes and the anger he feels. You can feel his intense desire for vengeance, I can feel his emotions. Other than that, the non-human species are drawn very well and I have no complaints about the art.

Character: 10
There are many excellent characters in this story, but the protagonist is the best by far. Not many manga start off on a bad note, and we can slowly watch as the character's anger grows with each passing day. However, he never loses sight of himself, and he constantly strides to become more powerful to take vengeance on those who wronged him, and protect the new allies that begin to surround him.

Enjoyment: 10
I seriously love this genre and this story, and the plot for this manga is just superb. We have too many "nice guy" and "strong justice" characters whose only goal is to protect his friends. We get to see the genre from a whole new perspective and see how anger and rage can also be used as motivation for power.

I love reading this manga, I stumbled upon it about 2 weeks ago, and I had caught up to the latest chapter in 2 days. I was so captured by the protagonist and how different he was from normal characters of the same genre. There is a few cliques that cannot be avoided, but I think that this manga has the potential to become an anime someday.
