So, I happen to stumble upon this manga from a stupid Facebook page, and thought why not give it a go.
I'm not a manga reader(but an avid anime watcher), so this is still on of my early manga experiences.

Before moving to the crux, I'll address the technical things first.
1. Art was quite good. Faces were very expressive. And it made the disgusting moments even more disgusting (in a good way, of course).
2. Writing was nothing special, but was bearable.

Now to the plot.
* Saki is a socially reclusive yet a very naiive girl, and when entering in high school, wants to become more social-able. So ... she asks her mom to do some make-up and then she suddenly becomes the most attractive girl in the school.
* She then meets a guy in a shop, who invites for a drink, and her wanting to be an "adult", goes there. He forces here into sex, even gives LSD to her, and hence afterwards, declares her his girlfriend. She gives into his charms, and accepts her as his boyfriend.
* Then after hearing about ways to earn money by sex from her school friends, she gets into escorting, and that's when everything goes downhill.

Thoughts
1. So you now know it's "that" kind of story. The "decent-into-living-hell" kind of one. But the series of events and how they are unfolding and being presented, keeps the plot engaging. But since it's a hentai manga, it's interrupted by a lot of sex scenes.
2. OK, so something personal here. I glance a quite many hentai manga, because reasons.... but this is the first time I didn't get ... aroused... by the second chapter because of what was happening.
3. Awful things happen to Saki, very awful. Even though they may seem cliched, it is still very hard to sit through. And this continues on for 6 chapters, which is quite amazing to keep the reader engaging and disgusted at the same time.
4. But Chapter 7 is when it separates itself from other hentai manga. Without spoiling anything, all the horrible things that happened before all combine to make a big punch in the gut, and to the heart, that you won't forget soon.
5. It makes me scared that it happens to girls (and maybe even boys) in real life.

TL;DR :- One of the (surprisingly) saddest manga stories I've read as of writing this, and considering it is a hentai manga. I'm disgusted, emotionally drained, sad as well as a little scared after reading this. NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART.

EDIT : [SPOILERS] I've noticed something. Except for the obvious sexual pleasure, she doesn't show emotions or thoughts for her current situation, except for the abortion scene and at the end. You'd think one would break down and cry a little when one get's hurt, but even after all the bad things happening to her, she persists. She endures the pain for a good future with her boyfriend, until...

Beautiful. In many manga series, the character will experience the bad so that the good seems so much better when it comes. Realistically, some people just have completely terrible lives. The transition from seeking solace in life to seeking solace in death is beautiful and convincing.

Along the way, the reader is reminded that less fortunate people have unexplored characters and stories that are often overlooked. Many undeserving people are beaten down by life. Though the protagonist may have been naive, she tried to live with others and just couldn't stand up to the world by herself. She took a bad path in life, with no ... one to help her at any turns she took, and she eventually found herself stuck. The world is as foul as people make it.

Though the story is experienced in third person, it really is as Saki experiences things. The lack of her thoughts make the story so much more tragically beautiful. We see Saki convincing herself that she is okay, we watch as she despairs when hope is taken from her, and at the end there is no after story, no epilogue. When life ends, it doesn't matter what happens afterwards because to experience something, you need to exist. Even if the people who made Saki's life miserable were meted out justice, she will never get to experience that happiness.

I really appreciate how this manga shows that life can be worse than death. The ending for this manga was a happy one. After toiling through life, she got the eternal reprieve she deserved. She may not have ever gotten to enjoy life, but she won't have to suffer through it ever again.

So you are nerdy girl, then you change your appearance and few scenes later you are being drugged and forced, but this is H-read so you enjoy it instead of end the day with a trauma.

You fall in love with your raper, not ridicolous and dangerous idea its normal (sarcasm on)

... Later you decide play the escort role but everything turns on fucki... with a fat ass you have just meet, not disgusting at all, he has a big D, its amazing ohhhh forgive me boyfriend kun, really?! Another Hentai common and dangerous plot.

The dad chapter it is ridiculous (like everything in this Hentai). Your father rapes you, but again instead of a logical consequence, you enjoy the fuck and the abuse turns on your average day with a lot of pleasure of course.

Meanwhile you turn into the school whore, because you don't have any trauma (like every women/men in the world would have with a long past of abuses)

Next thing; your mother decides that you are a whore and kicks you out the house; Why? because you have seduced your own father (offff courseeee), so the deal is moving to your boyfriends house; start your career as a prostitute and enjoy your new happy life.

The rest of the manga it's basically, drugs, people abusing her, more drugs more abuse, 0 response to these things, more drugs more abuse, 0 response again and finally OH MY GOD WHAT I HAVE Turned ON?! And die because of an overdose

The thing is that is not only an awful manga, is bad H-manga too, 0 development of the protagonist. The idea is use a lot of hard and tragic scenes and a very tragic ending in order to impress and looks like you have a message, NOOOO you don't have any message you are a typical H-manga with a very dangerous concepts, nothing else.

if you value your sanity and time, do not read this. i hated myself for reading this. i'm not really affected by gore and shit but this made me gag and feel like i was going to puke. it's genuinely disgusting and there's no point to reading it. if i had to choose death or read this again, i would choose death. first, saki is like 15. second, older men are raping her and manipulating her. third, she becomes a prostitute. fourth, he own dad rapes her. fifth, she gets heavily addicted to drugs. sixth, her fuckboy boyfriend doesn't really even consider them dating, ignores ... her, and rents her out for other men to fuck her. seventh, while saki is orgasming and high as a fucking kite, that bitch she calls her boyfriend puts piercings in her. eighth, her boyfriend beats her and throws her out for not bringing home money. ninth, a pair of homeless men WITH STDs rape her. tenth, she's pregnant, FOR THE SECOND TIME AS A 15 YEAR OLD GIRL. eleventh, she is literally chasing her next high and prostitutes herself for drugs. twelfth, after amassing a bit of money, some kids beat her while she's very visibly pregnant. thirteenth, she crawls while covered in blood into a bathroom and shoots up one last time before dying.

WHAT THE FUCK WAS THIS. IT JUST FELT LIKE SHOCK VALUE. IT FELT LIKE THE PLOT WAS "watch this shy girl try and become more likeable just to get abused by LITERALLY EVERYONE." THERE WAS BARELY ANY STORY, AND THE ONE THAT WAS THERE WAS TERRIBLE. "hey babe im gonna be a prostitute to help you pay for drugs."

I would not recommend this to anyone, even if you killed my family I would STILL not recommend it to you. I don't know why I read this, I regret EVER touching this abomination. To the writer of Metamorphosis- never write again. 0/10, would go lower if I could.

I see in a lot of comments in many websites of hatred againts Saki-chan, saying that she is silly, dumbass and she deserves all that things for her bad decisions.

I am going to defend Saki-chan from all that things. What happens is that Saki-chan is a TEENAGER, an insecure teenager that only wants to have a friend, to be accepted, like everyone wants to, how many of you did things in those years for liking others?

Everyone is making proffit of her kindness and innocence that, step by step, made that awful ending when she realizes that wasn't the way... A sad story

Ok, I live for edgy/dark manga (and anything else really), so when I heard everyone making a big deal about this title, I had to read it.

My expectations were set pretty high because of all the hype surrounding the series, which probably impacted my judgement in a negative way, as it did not completely live up to that hype.

I love the premise of the story. It's definitely original and I haven't seen many other hentai that have tried to be anything other than mindless smut. Which I don't mind, but it can get boring.

However, this attempt at realism is also the series' downfall for me.

The ... main character's mindset towards life and other people doesn't make sense to me. How willingly she trusts complete strangers. How attached she becomes to these men who abuse her. How much she loves sex right from the beginning. None of this makes sense in a character coming from her background and especially for her age.

I guess we don't get to see much of her life before her descent into substance abuse begins. From what is provided, she seems to have a pretty normal home life. Her dad gets creepy when she gets a makeover, true. But, before then it doesn't seem like she's been through anything particularly traumatic or unusual.

Someone coming from an average background like that doesn't seem like the type to suddenly go all the way with an older stranger and take E.

And even if you are high, I really don't think losing your virginity like that would be pleasurable at all.

The reactions she gets from the drugs she takes don't really make sense. It seems to be written by someone who didn't do much research on any of the drugs used throughout the series. They just seem to be working with cliches surrounding the drugs in question.

Also, you don't really get to see the lowest parts that come with substance abuse. True, you get to see what she's willing to put her body through overtime & how other people ramp up their abuse towards her. But, you don't get to see her own personal mental breakdowns. There's not any exploration of the relationship she has with herself. If you're someone who is living that kind of lifestyle, those moments are a HUGE part of the cycle of addiction. The only thing close to that is what happens at the very end of the series.

I guess, as far as hentai goes, yes this one of the more realistic and darker ones out there that I know of. It's unique and refreshing. However, it could have gone further with it and made it even more messed up.

You could argue that 'hey this is hentai, what do you expect?' Maybe there needed to be the right balance of realism and fantasy. Idk, I'm not a writer lol. For me, it would have enhanced my experience with it. I'm not sure how other people may feel about that. It's clear this work has managed to leave a mark on people just the way it is, and that's the important thing.

Overall, I would recommend other people to read it. Not to get some insight on how drug addiction works in real life. Not to get off to either, unless you're full on sadist. Read it because you probably haven't read anything like it before & you're tired of reading the same old boring cliches in every other hentai/manga.

"Emergence", as I've known it since I read a few pages months before it became so widespread, is easily one of the darkest and most depressing manga, let alone eromanga, that I've read. The outlook of it is very bleak and pessimistic, possibly to a fetishistic degree. It's not terrible, but I'm not saying it's good, either.


Beginning with the most attractive feature, the art is fairly good, with a distinctive style. It's very expressive, perhaps a bit too expressive, as I generally found it to bear a bit more resemblance to art that would better fit a more light-hearted and ... "mainstream" (i.e. not hentai) manga; however, this expressiveness did help some of the darker scenes to feel more "grotesque", making them less bearable than a more "standard", for lack of a better term, art style. As for the more anatomical aspects of it, while the proportions are fairly mild, the art is a bit more exaggerated than the average eromanga, Saki's body or poses sometimes looking downright silly in my opinion.


Moving onto the story, as you may glean from the synopsis, it's essentially the downward spiral of Saki's life after her high school debut that she changed her image for. A more accurate way to describe it may even be that it's a story that repeatedly beats Saki, and likely the reader too, down. The story is told in what could be called a chain of struggles and tragedies, each one involving sex in one way or another, understandable as it's an eromanga, and the degradation of Saki's mind (and eventually body). It's rather predictable in that things go terribly for Saki, though, of the manga I've read so far, it's unique in that the story is told from start to finish, going beyond where other hentai mangaka would leave off.

The writing is highly pessimistic in nature, and not above toying with the readers' emotions, for better or worse; personally, while I cried reading this, I admit that I'm susceptible to such writing methods, and will not guarantee anything. I found the ending more or less fitting of the manga, but I enjoyed a particular small moment of dialogue within the last few pages. Overall, though, I found the writing to be weak, and too reliant on easy gimmicks. While it was certainly tragic, since I've started thinking about the manga while writing this review, I've considered the possibility that an eromanga this sad is specifically so for fetish purposes, as simple shock value seems too simple.


As for characters, I feel as though there are no truly likeable characters in this manga. For a series that has the official English title of "Metamorphosis", the main character, Saki, seems to change the least in terms of characterization, remaining hopelessly naive even through the chain of tragedy involving her; many of the characters that you see less of in the manga show more change, in a few cases, very drastically. Even giving this manga the benefit of the doubt for being a hentai, no characters show anything beyond the role they were meant to fulfill, not even fleshing out that role beyond the bare minimum.


Personally, I did not enjoy this manga, and I primarily read it all the way through so I could understand what a few people I knew were talking about. Unfortunately, this manga was rather memorable, and further eromanga I've read have reminded me of this series, though I don't have any particular feelings about this other than regret.

I would recommend this manga for emotional masochists and those who like to cry, or, in the other hand, those who like to see fictional characters suffer beyond what is believable.


Overall, my experience with this manga was poor, and I feel as though it was trying way too hard to get a reaction from the reader, or that its tragic story was more meant as fetish bait than reaction bait.

To lighten this up a bit, in terms of hentai manga protagonist's suffering, Saki has nothing on Mai-chan.

Why is it that when something becomes popular for being unsettling to read or watch, it's usually the most "basic" and stale material ever?

A note before dissecting this terrible piece of work to its core, it might be the case that I am desensitized to works like this already, so I will not discount the feelings of others less experienced in the realm of "fucked up" manga, but seriously, this manga did not make anyone cry for a week as some may lead you to believe. I am of course not flexing my "hard stomach" here, this is just to give context and to not ... invalidate other people's experiences too much.

The paneling and composition

Already in the first couple pages of this manga, the reader is presented with some of the most confusing to read pages of any professionally published manga. I will not name any names, but it is certainly even worse than a particular "dark fantasy" manga which reigns supreme in the MAL rankings. The author clearly does not have the reader in mind when writing and drawing this manga, and as we will get to later in this review, avoids this with more aspects of his work. A good mangaka guides the reader's eyes where they want them to go, in every single page. This involves exploiting the page's composition, paneling, and the placement of text bubbles. You want to give the reader a smooth reading experience that never removes them from the immersion of the work you want them to read. "Metamorphosis" certainly fails at this. The only rule the paneling here follows is moving the reader's eyes from the top-right to bottom-left of the page, everything in between is up to the reader's intuition and guesswork. In several cases, one is greeted with character cutouts that transcend panel borders and disrupt the flow of the panel in every way, as the full-body cutouts aren't properly implemented. A good example I can think of is on page 31 of the full work, the reader has to guess which order the speech bubbles are supposed to be read in, as they do not match the standard reading order found in most other manga. A good example of a full-body character cutout is from "One Piece" when Yamato takes off their mask. Having a good flow to your page is one of the bare minimum essentials of making a good comic, and is a rule all comic-book authors and mangaka abide by, except for the author of "Metamorphosis", apparently.

A side note

Why is it worth dissecting and criticizing a hentai like this? I would agree, it is indeed stupid and an obvious low hanging fruit to overanalyze hentai in the same way one would analyze respectable works, however, the manga tries to be more than a simple hentai, so I will treat it as such, even though it fails miserably in what it tries to be. In addition, the majority audience reception of this manga is one that gives the impression that this manga IS in fact something to be taken seriously.

The characters, character arcs, writing, and pacing

This manga is not a good example of what most uninformed individuals would refer to as "character development". Why might that be? The girl clearly changes drastically throughout the story in reaction to her experiences. Yes, there is the PRESENCE of a character arc in this manga, but in the same way as some certain story about man-eating giants attacking humanity hiding behind walls, it is not a good character arc. This is for two simple reasons: the character progression is too fast paced, and that there is zero prior character development (character development meaning the actual WRITING of the character, not the process of change they go through) before she begins to change and bad things begin to happen to her. Why should any reader care about what happens to poor Saki-chan? Any 3 year old could write a story with a character who has a lot of bad things happen to them. Here, I can write one now: 'there is an 80 year old grandma who is nice to her grandkids and she gets murdered on the street because people are bad. The end'. No one cares about that grandma for any reason beyond basic human empathy, as the only empathy she generates is through her existence as, one, a human, and two, as an elderly person. Nothing in that story I just created gives reason for anyone to care about her. This is the same for "Metamorphosis". There is no prerequisite for the reader to care about Saki-chan, or anything that happens to her, besides the fact that she is a fellow human, and a seemingly innocent girl who just wants to fit in (something lazy authors use to write easily relatable characters if they don't actually feel like writing a fully fleshed character profile).

Now for the pacing. Characters here just make decisions on a whim just to fit the narrative. "Oh, we just heard a rumor that Saki-chan is having sex with the boys in class? Let's all hate her without further notice! The author needs her to be alienated from her social circle and to apparently suffer more!", "Oh, I'm pregnant again! I will not abort the baby this time because I do not want to go through 'that' again." Now in this case, because we never actually saw "that", the reader is left to assume that she doesn't want to abort her baby this time because it would... hurt? Who knows. This decision is a turning point in her character arc and it is sudden without any form of buildup to it. Characters just change and react in accordance with what is required for the story. This is lazy writing, and the result is a main character who gives zero reason for anyone to invest any sort of emotional investment in them. Unless, of course, the reader is one of the many people who take characters at face value and relate and invest time into them on the basis of their mere existence as people, rather than doing it for any solid reasons like relatable character traits, decisions, or impactful actions in the story.

Saki-chan is also another example of terrible female writing by a male author. The author writes women as they exist in his head, there to satisfy his fantasies. Girls like this don't exist. And even in a work of fiction such as this, it is offensive to the reader to even portray a character so stupid with actions and decisions solely based on his male fantasy, and expect the reader to actually feel something for them. Now of course, it is a given that women in hentai manga are not realistic, and this goes without saying. But I happened to be unlucky enough to come across fans of this manga praising it for being "realistic", so excuse me.

Also, just a last note for the writing, this manga was insanely predictable. Now this may be an obvious case for hentai manga or erotic works in general, but this really stands out as it isn't even predictable in an absurd sense, it tries to actually portray itself as a solid story with shocking twists and turns.

It fails as a story, so how does it stack up as a hentai?

To cut it short, it fails as a hentai too. I will not try to boast, but this is one of the most visually mild hentai I've ever read. Most of this aspect of the manga comes down to each individual's taste, but people shouldn't waste their time on this manga if they want a good hentai to satisfy their business. It is stale and lacks creativity. Even in the subgenre of "ugly bastard" or "old man", something I dislike to begin with, there isn't anything noteworthy or new in this manga. I would rate the hentai aspect of this manga a 4/10, as there were a few good panels.

So then why isn't it a complete 1/10?

It certainly almost is. But the way the author draws male testicles is nice, and some of the tragic things that happened to poor Saki-chan near the end were definitely kind of infuriating, so I guess the author got me there. But this impact lasted until the second after I read the last page, so as far as an impactful read, it was quite weak.

Conclusion

"Metamorphosis" is truly one of the most overrated manga and hentai I've ever come across. The fact that it has over 40000 members on MAL proves just how easily impressionable tiktok teens are, with the slightly unsettling experiences Saki-chan goes through being an easily advertisable set of events that strike the interests of normies on the internet whose tastes are shaped by the instagram, tiktok, or youtube algorithms. The manga fails as both a story and as a hentai, and is a waste of time for anyone beyond the mental age of 12 looking for something impactful to read or something to satisfy their hentai business.

This review will be purely based on plot, I don't review hentai/doujin based on sex taste, because it's all biased; needless to say, you shouldn't be reading this for jack material. If you are though, prepare to be massively disgusted and go limp immediately (Even for you well-versed in UB and MF tags).

STORY: [Full Spoilers; it's just 200 something pages so go read it and come back]
I'm going to be breaking this up into 3 Parts: The innocent stage, clueless stage, and the desperate stage.


INNOCENT STAGE (Experimenting and falling to social pressure; also the longest)
Metamorphosis follows the tale of Saki Yoshida, a social outcast in ... middle school. She's envious of all the attention her other peers get, and decides to finally make a change in her life. She decides to begin putting on makeup and changing her hair style (she also removes her glasses), with the help of her mother. To her surprise, this actually works. She goes from being rock bottom on the social hierarchy to hanging out with the popular girls. One day, while out at a bookstore, she meets a man named Hayato.

Haytato, is for all intensive purposes, a scumbag (Practically all of the characters in this story are). He finds her in the bookstore, and invites her to out with him. In just one date, he pressures her to have sex with him at a love hotel. Not to mention, he also starts her long-addiction to several forms of drugs throughout the doujin (Upon a closer read, they seem to be Ecstasy pills). As a reader, it's pretty clear what is going on at this point. She's getting roofied and taking advantage of. Regardless, after they have sex for the first time, she starts to see him as a reliable person in her life (This should go without saying, but if someone takes you somewhere private and tries to have sex with you on the first date; you shouldn't oblige). Unfortunately for Saki though, she's only 13 (I'm assuming since she's in middle school) at the start of this story; meaning she is still quite young and impressionable. She doesn't realize that Hayato is a bad influence in her life until long after her entrance into adulthood. She ends up ONLY having sex with him EVERY time they meet (Again, I don't blame her for not realizing the issue here, due to her age).

Back at school, she overhears of a "job" from her "friends" which can make some quick cash. All she has to do is talk to some geezers and turn them on (Can't see this going wrong, right?). She meets with one of these clients (Who actually turns out to be one of the best Ugly Bastards in Hentai period, more on that later), and he tricks her to have sex with her. Garden variety stuff. When she returns at school, she is taken aback. Why? Turns out someone took a picture of her leaving the love hotel with the Ugly Bastard. This is when a group of male students decide to blackmail her and force her to have sex with them (Once again, this is pretty tame so far). After countless occasions of just flat sex with her classmates, she begins to develop a slut reputation around the school. This immediately causes her "friends" to get jealous, send her death threats, and make her life much more harder at school.

When she comes home, is when the plot thickens. I unfortunately saw the twist coming, like the degenerate I am, but it still hit hard to home. Over a dinner discussion with her parents, her dad starts to realize how much she's GROWN UP. All of you reading this, should be having all sorts of red flags going off in your head. After dinner, her dad breaks into her room and rapes her. It was at this point that I realized this wasn't just the garden variety rape hentai, that I had taken it for.

At this point in the story, Saki is completely unable to avoid being raped. She goes to school, her classmates fuck her; if she goes home, her dad fucks her. It gets much worse for her though, once she lets out a loud moan in school, causing everyone to know that she has become a slut (Even though it's really not her fault, yet). Her "FRIENDS" (I hope you are recognizing a theme by now) write all sorts of *great* death threats all over her desk. This prompts her to run home for emotional support.

When she goes home, she is abruptly greeted with a bitch slap from her mother. Turns out, she knows she's been having sex with her father. Now, this is the only part of the story that I thought made no sense AT ALL. Upon crying for her mother to believe her that he raped her, SHE SIDES WITH HER HUSBAND. What the actual fuck?! Her mom calls her a whore, bitch, and a slew of names before kicking her out of the house. With nowhere to turn, she remembers Hayato and goes to him for advice.

CLUELESS STAGE (Entering the *Adult* world)
Saki ends up moving in with Hayato and continues her fervent sex streak with him. She considers herself to be an adult now, and capable of making her own decisions (At best, she's probably 14 here; in other words, way too young to go out on her own with her "reliable judgement"). Hayato introduces her to an underground drug ring (Great boyfriend material there) and proceeds to get her hooked into cocaine (This being the 2nd drug that she had experienced by now). She foolishly believes that Hayato took her in out of the kindness out of her heart, and says that she'll pay Hayato's 1 Million Yen debt. Only one issue: She doesn't have a job. This is when she begins to actively whore herself out to others.

Right there in the club, she is raped by Hayato's buddies. Again, I don't blame her for not realzing this isn't acceptable for several reasons (I. She had shitty parents who didn't tell her how the real world works, II. She's still a minor, III. She's under the influence of cocaine in this scene, IV. She trusts Hayato and relies on him for things she, herself, does not undestand). Honestly, calling this whole doujin "unrealistic," for these reasons is missing the mark. After being raped by all the guys, she develops an obsession for cocaine, since it makes her orgasm significantly more intensely.

After some time, she begins her life as a prostitute. Dressing up, dying her hair blonde; she's living that *extravagant* adult life. Hayato shows his bad boyfriend skills off by gaming on the couch while telling Saki to get an abortion, since it's bad for business. Saki reluctantly goes through with it, and meets up with the Ugly Bastard who took advantage of her earlier on in the story. When he meets her, he's a bit surprised. He notices how she has no idea what she is getting herself into, and ACTUALLY GIVES HER ADVICE. Finally one Ugly Bastard that isn't a complete shmuck! It still doesn't help him by much, since you know he did force himself onto Saki earlier, but compared to the other encounters she goes through; he could have been much worse. Anyway, he tells her that Hayato is using her, but she doesn't believe him. This is when Saki starts to become desperate: She begs him to let her have sex with him, in order to pay off Hayato's debt (This is because our Ugly Bastard over here, declined the proposition to have sex; this was mainly due to her innocence being tainted.

She returns to her joint, and raped again upon asking for Hayato's whereabouts. This is when she encounters her third new drug: this time being Heroin most likely (Notice how it's injected into her, and also the most powerful of the drugs she's experienced; just a guess, but still). After becoming a literal cumdumpster, she's thrown into the alleyway. This is when she enters her desperate stage.

DESPERATE STAGE
After being raped and thrown into the alley, she realizes all her money was stolen; as well as her drugs. When she goes back to Obata (Forgot to mention, but he basically owns this joint; also the guy who injected her with Heroin), he gives her a choice: She can either take the money or the cocaine. She chooses the cocaine. When she tells Hayato about this, he beats her up and evicts her (Take notes guys, this is a real gentlemen).

She's left homeless, jobless, and all the while; she's still in her prostitute apparel. At a playground, she sniffs a bit of cocaine and instantly gets high. She starts masturbating right there on the slide, when two homeless guys approach her. She gets raped by them, yada yada, and then she wakes up somewhere else. The homeless guys give her what looks like puke in a bowl, and she vomits after inhaling the aroma. This is when she realizes she's pregnant again. She chooses not to get an abortion this time though, and opts to change her life for the better.

This when we enter the final Chapter (7), which is by far one of the more disturbing ones. It begins with her being fucked in an alleyway, but it becomes gradually more upsetting as we realize that she's still pregnant. Some close up shots of the fetus, that would make anyone limp after viewing it, and we end the rape scene. Post-rape, she starts to crave Heroin, and despite harboring her child inside of her, she injects herself with it.

The following scene is when we see her at her lowest; outfitted with the hobo garb and all, she re-visits Obata's joint, only to find he isn't there. She instead begs the guys outside the joint for money, and she actually receives some before promptly being mocked. She moves on to take her saved money out of a locker (presumably at the bank), when she's stopped by a familiar group: her "friends" from middle school.

They don't recognize her, but she immediately identifies them. They accuse her of stealing, call her a hobo, and openly mock her. They physically abuse her, and stop her when she tries to run away with her money. When she trips over, he pregnant belly is revealed and her lack of panties as well. This is when one of her old "FRIENDS" notices her subtly. What follows is some of the cruelest scenes, I've ever seen from a Hentai/Doujin (And I've seen and read plenty). The bullies, now adults, stomp on her pregnant stomach in an attempt to kill her unborn child. Just wow...Then her friend strips her down, and they proceed to rape her. Almost the whole time, they are kicking her clit too. They then proceed to take a Coke bottle and shove it up her vagina, quite forcibly. They steal her money and leave.

With her water broken, being mixed with the blood from the pain she endured; she gives birth to her child in the bank bathroom. The final shot we see her like this is a haunting one: She stares into a mirror, before properly returning her hair to its original state and then puts on her glasses, before crying immensely. She breaks the mirror, crawls on the floor, and apologizes for being such a bad mother. Believing she'll die, she inserts all the drugs she still has on her. She faints before saying she's glad.

The scene then transitions to an much older Saki, presumably in her 20s-30s considering her child (Hana) seems to be around 8 years old. She tells Saki to snap out of her daydream. Saki then tells Hana that her past was miserable, and she didn't know how to take care of herself. She then tells Hana that due to her presence, she could start fresh in life. The Doujin ends on the bathroom floor with her broken glasses, cocaine, and blood on the floor. Combining this scene with the flash-forward, it's highly probably that Saki gave birth to Hana in that bathroom.

Final Thoughts
That's about all I have to say about this review. I will say his though, I rarely get immersed into Anime, and even rarer for Hentai. By the flash-forward, around when Saki was telling Hana that she didn't know how to take care of herself, I was bawling my eyes out crying. The only other Hentai to do that for me was Tiny Evil Episode 2, and even that wasn't as strong as this. Definite 10, and it's going on my favorites list.

Anyway, Henshin, or: How People Keep Trying to Find Deep Meanings in Porn

My first contact with Henshin was through those anime pages and groups on Facebook, where people would spend a considerable amount of time posting anime aesthetics, lo-fi hip hop, and displaying a rather unhealthy obssession with ahegao. That last part alone should have made ... me wary enough, but well, what's one more terrible manga to the list?
I should have known better than to fall for the "hentai with a plot" deception, but people kept bringing it enough to catch my attention, so I might as well take a look for myself.

The plot is very simple: a girl changes her appearances as a means to change her life. This one good decision led her to bad decision after another in order to get her into the most deviant and abhorrent sexual situations possible.
...that's it. That's the whole manga. To sum it up, it was the narrative equivalent of abusing/killing off the dog so people would feel sorry for it. It really has nothing going for it other than sheer shock value and emotional manipulation. And it clearly worked, considering how popular it got, but it takes little retrospection to see how bad it is.

Somehow, I've seen this manga being labeled as a "coming of age" countless times — only that, you know, coming of ages usually features growth, introspection and choices made by the main characters. The story wants you to believe it does that, but from the first page to the last, Saki never gets to be anything else than a vapid, empty character only meant for channeling sexual depravity, as if we didn't already have plenty of those around. The only kind of introspection she ever gets until the bitter end is things like "oh no I don't know what I'm doing" or "I loooove sex" (that's not hyperbole, she literally says/thinks that), which tells a lot about the choices her character is ever given: whether her actions are influenced by other people, drugs, or her unnatural craving for sex (always external factors, not once her own resolve), in the end it doesn't really matter: all of them are just excuses for her to get into more sex, and even if she is for a moment shown to be conscious that something's wrong, it doesn't really matter: she does it anyway.

Along the way, in those aforementioned anime pages and discussions, somehow Saki started being called the "female Punpun" (as well comparisons with other characters, like Shinji and even Bojack Horseman for some reason). However, even Inio Asano was conscious enough that a whole story centred around a sad boy being sad all alone in his room wasn't enough to engage people. What made Punpun interesting was his sprawling cast of side characters, that introduced all kinds of points of view and different narratives into the story. Although Goodnight Punpun has its fair share of snob cynicism and Punpun himself ultimately kept his self-destructive and egocentric personality, he was never given a shortage of options and paths to take. Through all his life he was introduced to both evil and good, irresolute and determined people, people that tried to help him and that only made him become worse. It was this diversity that made the story, the universe, and Punpun's character believable, even though it was all still so absurd: nothing was ever only black or white, there were myriads of colours that influenced its characters, and even though the story maintained a cynic and toxic look at reality, it always tried to keep some sense of narrative cohesion. This also reflects on the opinions people have about Punpun: some pity him, claiming he was a victim of odds, some consider him to be the absolute worst.

Henshin, however, does not have that: every single character is depicted as despicable and egotistical, always leading Saki into a even more disgruntled spiral of helplessness even if it meant acting in completely unrealistic ways (like a mother who's so oblivious she immediately believes her husband's claims of being seduced by their own daughter without even considering listening to her side of things), which makes the story completely unbelievable and dumb. Even the one character who shows the least bit of kindness does so as just a way for the plot to spit harsh truths and making Saki even more miserable. It tries too hard to make us care about her by introducing her to gradually more and more screwed up situations, trying to force a sense of shallow pity into the reader, instead of making us care by turning her into an actually believable character or give her the least bit of humanity. It's even sadder to see people deeming her as a "strong" character, when she does nothing but be carried by the plot instead of carrying it, which is not a demonstration of strong character writing, at all.

At first, I thought the art was being purposefully drawn to be as coarse and crude as possible to fit how horrid the whole idea behind the story was, and I've seen some people rise in its defence based on that — only, it wasn't actually doing that. By taking a quick check at the artist's other works, it seems like this is his actual style: somewhat bloated bodies, exaggerated anatomy, and themes such as humiliation and rape (even things like anthropomorphic sex roosters). It also constantly uses the 'ahegao face' (which might explain why it attracts so many edgy teens), so it's hard to defend that those scenes weren't intended for at least some kind of audience to enjoy (namely, Shindol's audience). It simply doesn't add up.

On trying to see how chaotic he could get from the simple premise of self-improvement, the author ended up with nothing but self-deprecating onanism — which seems to be all the rage these days, so it's no wonder it got so popular. People might throw the words 'subversion' and 'deconstruction' around it, but it does nothing of the sort, and attempting to find any kind of deep meaning in Henshin is just a roundabout way to not admit they enjoy a work that has nothing to offer but cheap shock and porn.
In the end, Henshin is just your average hentai doujinshi, only it's not really appealing unless you're into some really screwed up stuff, and it doesn't work as a story of any kind, so I got absolutely nothing out of it rather than disgust and a deep impression of lost time and that the people who revere it as quality story-telling should find better, healthier hobbies.

Frankly, I shouldn't even have that much to say about this and the fact that I do makes me a little queasy: it's a hentai, it's supposed to be mindless and stupid and generally not worthy of any deep analysis. However, the moment people start acting like it has a story to tell it might be judged as such, and the story it tries to tell is complete and utter shit.

Well, to be completely honest, I found a meme, got curious as to what it was and it lead me to reading this story. I've had a few hints and sort of guessed what it was going to be like before delving into this story. I was correct, but it exceeded my expectations and just kept doing down and down and down.

I must say this story had a very good impact on me and my thoughts of actual people around the world. Leads me to say that you got to be careful in your decisions as one thing can lead to another and you'll ... never be able to go back on that.

Its a very hard manga to read and I wouldn't be surprised if you drop this manga very early. Its a good eye opener and you start to realise the bad in this world and that there always will be bad people.

You should definitely check this manga out, even though its a hentai, and hard to read through, it will certainly teach you a lot of things about how cruel life can be. It is probably the only hentai manga you should ever read.

Story
It's pretty unexpected, alot of awuful things happen for no reason,each time the autor just wants something crappier for her, it should not be confused an autor's fucked up mind with an actual good story.
Also the last part where the teenagers appear was so "edgy", and made no sense at all the would be that cruel even less sense that the other characters. ... not gonna spoil the last part but i hope it's not a dream or else i'll get depressed.
Art:
It's pretty good overall, the designs are nothing special , it looks like an average hentai manga, i liked the progression of the vignettes( i have not much experience with comic books so that might be nothing special)

Characters:
The protagonist is boring a character the only characteristics she has are being stupid and love sex and then drugs
Everybody else is a one dimensional asshole who mistreats the protagonist the only somewhat decent character is maybe the fat guy she fucks the second time because he acually realistic compasion for her

Enjoyment:
The only reason i finished this crap is because it was 5 in he morning and i thought his would be traumatic and made just sleep(it has happened) but no it just made ask what am i even doing with my life?

Perfect. Disgusting. Captivating. Unreadable. Thoughtful. Atrocious.
Metamorphosis, or Henshin, is simultaneously one of the greatest and one of the worst manga I have ever read. A horrifying exposé on the depraved dark side of modern society- masquerading as a hentai manga- Metamorphosis is an experience you will *never* forget. It's a story you'll read, ponder for a very long time, and then never want to think about ever again.

Story: 10.
The plot of Metamorphosis is almost flawlessly arranged. An innocent girl's nightmarish spiral into a world of filth and disorder carefully laid out over 225 pages, Metamorphosis is impossible to put down no matter how much ... you want to do just that. Just when you think the worst has come to pass for the MC, Saki Yoshida, the author leads her even further into the depths of her own personal hell. It is no doubt one of the scariest pieces of fiction I've ever come across, and that's for one main reason: none of what happens to Saki is her own fault. The only sins she actually commits of her own free will: being innocent and being self-conscious. These two very mundane flaws, character traits anyone can relate to and sympathize with, are the root cause of everything that will go on to ruin her life.
That's what makes Metamorphosis so scary. There is not a single moment in the story that you can point at and say: "There. That decision. She could've made the choice not to do that, and everything would've turned out fine." The story is a nightmare made reality, a horror story Saki can't escape from no matter what she tries at every step of her downfall, because she's afraid to resist, too pure to understand what's happening, or just forced into making choices she can't refuse.
So that leads me to the next part of what makes this manga frightening: So, nothing that happens to Saki is her own fault. But everything that happens to Saki is everyone else's fault. From the people who just ignore her plight to the ones who uncaringly abuse and manipulate her, Saki's fall from grace is orchestrated by the actions of all of the other people in the story. If just one of the people she encounters along her journey into darkness decides to help and support her, she could be rescued from her plight. Still, whether or not that does end up happening is something I'm not going to spoil. The author does an incredible job of exposing the world of apathy and agony that lurks just under the surface of civilized society, and depicting Saki's headfirst plunge into that world.
The torture and abuse in this manga aren't just for shock value and the sex isn't just jerk-off material. Everything has a purpose and actually builds towards themes and the overall storyline.
And the ending.... man, the ending... It might take you a few minutes to understand what happens, but let me just say that it's going to stay with you for a very long time. (And a piece of advice: throughout the bathroom scene at the ending, pay very close attention to how her appearance changes.)

Art: 7
The art is pretty good for a hentai. The artist's use of perspectives, angling, and decent focus on realistic body proportions isn't something you'll find very often among hentai artists.
My only gripe with the art, and my main problem with this manga overall, is that it makes most of the sex that happens in the manga look visually appealing. Yes, I get that's the point of a hentai, but in the case of a serious story like this, where every sex scene involves Saki and someone who abuses and manipulates her, and in many cases even tortures her, it takes away from the somber tone of the story. Every sex scene is a horrifying representation of her disappearing dignity and sense of self, and the art that goes along with it should reflect that. But in many cases, the art glorifies and sensualizes the act instead.

Character: 8.
Metamorphosis is full of disturbing and sleazy characters, but what makes it even more depressing are the good people who turn their backs to Saki because of misunderstandings.
Saki's metamorphosis as a character is particularly well done. Her gradual corruption and debasement are masterfully executed, and with every scene of the manga the author makes you really feel for her losses.


Enjoyment: 2.
I give the story a full ten, the art a pretty high rank of 7, the characters an 8, and the manga overall an 8/10. So why am I putting the enjoyment at a 2?
Because Metamorphosis is NOT an enjoyable experience. And it's not meant to be. If you're still jerking off 70 pages into the story I'd say you're into some weird stuff. But if you're still going at it 200+ pages in, you're definitely a threat to society. (Just kidding, but seriously... wtf??)

Metamorphosis is a vile, disgusting, depraved piece of fiction. It is a manga you'll read once and never want to read ever again. But it's one that'll leave you thinking about it long after you finish. How could Saki have been saved? Who was the worst person she met? Could something like this actually happen in real life? What did the ending mean? Metamorphosis is a story that will capture you and never fully let go.

Overall: 8.
A perverse, gloomy, sordid tale, Metamorphosis is not for the faint of heart. But if you can make it through all 225 pages I think you'll come to the conclusion that it was worth reading. Just not something worth reading again.
The well-written plot, good art, complex characters, depressing tone, and healthy dose of social commentary all come together to create a truly horrific tragedy, and a uniquely serious outlier in the hentai genre.
8/10. Would recommend with caution.

P.S.: If you're a JoJo fan, I'd recommend that you read the Josuke ending too. It's on nhentai along with the original.

Roughly 200 pages of misery porn with no greater value beyond that.
The story, while not incomprehensible offers so little for the reader to extract from it that there really isn't any reason to read it at all past the initial shock value. No excellent characterization, incredible art, or thematic depth to be found anywhere within the work give little artistic merit to it's existence and as such I can hardly recommend it to anyone looking to read it for anything save the aforementioned shock value.

The only thing keeping this from receiving a 1 is that it is not artistically broken.

Shindo L definitely has talent in writing stories that affect its readers, and I look forward to reading more of his works in the future. 10/10

No clue why people think this is so depressing or that this is so special. Yes there are some dark events, such as explicit, hardcore drug abuse/use, which is very rare in manga/anime. But the main girl has no personality, just gets raped and enjoys it, and everyone who rapes her, does so in a very lazy, stereotypical hentai character way. So let me explain a long pedantic exposition about hentai and porn to illustrate my argument.

What is porn or rather, what is porn about? Porn is mainly about the sex scene, the part of engaging in the sexual acts. Okay then, therefore hentai ... is a subset of porn because it is mainly defined as porn with anime art styles, whether in manga or anime media. When one searches for porn, most porn on the internet is just the sex. Some porn videos have narratives but many do not. How about hentai? Most hentai, whether Manga or anime or game, is almost never just the sex scene by itself. It's almost always a narrative or small story accompanying it. (Of course one can just skip to the "good parts", but few full hentai medium are the sex scenes alone).

Now, in all hentai, the goal of or simply purpose of it to show a sex scene, by definition. The job of the hentai creator or artist is craft that sex scene and the story around it, or how it would logically get to that point. In general, before the author introduces anything about the setting, characters or plot, we assume people act rationally as in our world, i.e. people don't go around raping people for no reason or provocation, people don't normally enjoy rape like drinking afternoon tea. So, as the author, how does one get to the characters having sex? (and hentai are allowed a very short amount of pages, due to the nature of hentai being pornographic material for a masturbation session) Often, it requires a break from rational or organic thinking/actions. For example, in hentai plots, the guys are sexual deviants, or are faceless serial rapists. Girls are powerless and resist-less, or even enjoy rape. This type of some storytelling is used by some authors, but some would like make it feel more believable by having the plot or characters justify the sex.

An example of this would be in Oni Chichi, the dad uses some asphoradic spray or something in the first episode to get the daughter to have sex with him, as as she was clearly unwillingly to have sex with him by other means. In my opinion, if a plot point makes sense, for example reason to have sex besides just nonsensical rape, it makes the story more believable, more engaging, and therefore more arousal.

There is simply not enough time to develop characters in a meaningful way to rationally explain the motivation why the main guy chooses to rape or the girl enjoys being raped, in 20 pages or minutes of a hentai manga or anime. Explanation, background, motivation, reasoning, is very important to believing a real character in a Manga or in any story and if their actions/behaviors are deemed believable or of organic justification. This is simply not afforded to most hentai for the brevity reason stated previously.

This brings us back to Emergence, while reading this, the entire time it felt like an average, run-of-the-mill rape Manga. The main girl gets raped repeatedly by everyone, whilst enjoying it. There is no explanation, and again probably due to the shortness of being hentai, which is not surprising. There is a scene or two, where the character has a moment of genuine self-reflection and as the reader you are curious about what she thinks. However, this plot/character point doesn't hold much weight again, due to the absurdity of all the characters and plot decisions of the stereotypical lazy hentai. Therefore I cannot take anything seriously, it still feels very unrealistic overall (the art style also does not convey much somberness or serious tones, it looks mostly ahegao). At face value, this just a hentai with some edgy scenes, that certainly does not warrant any level of "depression" or deep ponderment about the characters or plot as many are suggesting. Many other none hentai shows/Manga have done more edgy, disturbing or upsetting things, elfen lied. And other manga such as kurosawa or chikan otoko truly are melodramatic and induce a wide array of sad or void pit emotions.

Did you see BDD freeze the wave while Caps roamed? He's playing the waves to perfection. While Caps is dicking around and taking advantage of GenG, BDD is costing G2 50 gold per minute. If he does that for 8 minutes, that's an entire Doran's Ring advantage given to GenG. G2 are just lucky that GenG played suboptimally, if they played perfectly G2 wouldn't have won.

i think the first time i heard about this, i was told that it was a hentai that was impossible to fap to, and it puzzled me because i thought people were sick enough to fap to anything. regardless i don’t read hentai but with all the praise that this gets i decided to give it a go. it’s graphic but that’s coming from someone that doesn’t read a lot of hentai however i still think it’s extremely graphic.
it was just depressing, seeing this normal girl take the wrong path step after step, at one point i remember wanting to barf, i knew i ... was going to throw up, just a spiral of misery, ill think about this for a while, not the sort of thing you forget.
7 heart wrenching chapters

This... This story was memed so much that some people think that it probably isn't that bad. It's very bad! I was curious about it and my stupid curiosity got the best of me and I read it. It took me weeks to recover from it. It's just a downhill spiral. I want to protect Saki so much. It's not just the story. Almost everyone she has sex with is an ugly bastard. I thought people over exaggerated for how bad it is. Trust me. They are dialing it down. Don't read it, don't look at it, don't interact with it, don't feed it, just ... don't do anything!
