I managed to finish the series. The fact that that's the first thought I had (it's finally finished!) is not a great sign for this manga. I went in to this series, excited for something new and interesting. And the premise is very intriguing. The mask system is neat and the sky-rise setting is certainly something I haven't ever seen before.

However... the concept is not enough to save the execution.

I really enjoyed this work of art. The story is full of plot twists. It's not just an ordinary survival thing. If you are action/horror/suspense lover then I guarantee that you will enjoy this.

I'm not really a person who keeps eye on the art in manga or anime so I can't really comment on it. But I really did like the way they made the masks for the masked people.

There are lots of characters but mainly supporting ones. There are bad and good people and you might fall in love with how brave some of them are. I was excepting it to be male ...

I'll get straight to the point: This manga has moments where it does show uniqueness and it is a very easy read, but its plot is filled to the brim with clichés and awful characters.

That the manga is an 'easy read' is probably the best compliment I can give it because it seems the author really worked hard at that aspect.

To begin, the manga drops you right immediately into the action. I do mean 'right immediately' -- from page 1. Other such manga would take at least a single chapter, if not two or three before the action takes place. It's understandable too as the ... author wants to establish setting, initial characterization (so readers can see the effects of the plot on the characters), and perhaps introduce some conflicts.

Tenkuu Shinpan doesn’t do that. Instead, the action starts from the beginning and the characterization is introduced in small bits and pieces sprinkled throughout the chapters. The result of this is that the manga is an easy read – one can read ten chapters without thinking much at all -- but it also feels like the story is a secondhand thought.

Which brings me to my main criticism: the clichés and awful characters.

The main character, Yuri Honjou, fits every manga stereotype you can think of. First off, she’s a ‘brocon’ (i.e. the little sister who loves her big brother), she’s innocent and naïve, and 1/4 of any particular chapter is dedicated to showing off her panties and/or other assets. She’s also naively simple to the point where she describes a person she acknowledged as highly murderous (and who she witnessed murdering somebody) as ‘a nice person’ and started using the honorific ‘chan’ within moments of meeting her. Yet despite her naivety, innocence, and nonviolent nature, when she attains a gun, she becomes an incredible sharpshooter to the point where she can blow a weapon out of someone’s hand from a distance.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of stereotypes that surrounds Yuri too.

It’s also not limited to her as a character, but other characters and the plot as a whole tends to be pretty simple and one-dimensional. The mystery is brought on inelegantly and ‘clues’ are pretty much shoved into readers’ face. New characters also fall into known stereotypes and fall by the wayside pretty easily.

So question: If this manga seems so filled with clichés, what are these ‘moments of uniqueness’ I referred to?

Well, I actually mentioned one in passing -- the fact that she uses and continuously uses a gun. Manga, even survival manga, seems highly averse to its characters using weapons. Clubs, knives, and especially guns are either never used at all or dropped as soon as the threat is stopped. The heroes seem to depend on the act of physically restraining others or screaming 'stop!' in order to protect themselves.

So the fact that the main hero picks up a gun, uses it, and continues to use it (among other weapons) is actually surprising.

There are other things too, such as the fact that survival (even for the characters who typically survives) is genuinely extremely low, is also surprising. However, for the most part, Tenkuu Shinpan is a clichéd mess wherein the story seems to take a backseat to the action.

What may be a great read that been ruined by the simplistic story and characters. Overall, I think there’s a good chance one could enjoy it if one could ignore those aspects, but for me, I just couldn’t.

I read about 10 chapters then I put on hold as it was a good marathon material and it was still publishing, and everyone knows the pain of waiting for the next week chapter in a thriller manga, also chapters were about 6-10 pages so those who read it week by week ended up giving a low score....probably dropping it.

I'm gonna be honest and not do a summery. This manga, while not a terrible experience, is a general waste of time. The story is unfinished, the overall concept is not polished, and the characters range from pretty good to underdeveloped. Some authors need to realize that not everyone can be the next Oda or SUI, and that this kind of long term development requires actually planning ahead and not throwing shit on the wall every week trying to make constant cool twists and turns.

And its a shame because to about the halfway mark, I was feeling like this manga was pretty good, ...

Well, Tenkuu Shinpan ended. This is one of the first manga that I started reading because it caught my attention and the interesting plot... I really regret to see how it ended.

I must say that despite everything I like the manga, but that does not prevent me from being disappointed.

The manga itself presented an interesting story, the story is about a young girl named Yuri who is transported to a world where you can only walk between buildings (or so it is at the beginning) while a person wearing masks and weapons murders all people What do you see. Well, the story ... presents a solid base presenting quickly and mysteriously how your world is governed which is fine, we have demonstrations of or more masks work (like when the maid mask commits suicide because his mask was broken).

The story moved at a more than decent pace, making a contrast between tense moments against the masks and moment of dialogue between the characters, the story would be fine, but in a certain part of the manga the story becomes nuy convoluted and elaborate, the presentation of the guardian angels was well achieved, because they were powerful characters that with their simple presence it was noticeable that something important was going to happen, but then the manga wants to look like a shonen of fights and stable Yuri and his brother who fight against the guardian angels more strong which removes one of the major elements of tension of the manga (it must also be mentioned that it is not as if the fight were memorable, in fact they do not present something ingenious or a key element, only simplistic explanations of how humans can fight against the guardian angels).

When the manga is ending the story, rhythm and drama decays much more, with a mediocre and hurried final combat in addition to presenting scenes that do not have much essence or feeling (when Kusakabe meets his son at the end or when Rika cries for Yuri they are scenes that feel very empty, but the death of Aikawa wins the prize, introducing us to whom he believed himself to be the main antagonist and killing him in a simple and uncomprehending way, as if it were nothing).

Manga characters can be interesting and have charismatic personalities to a certain extent, because there are some like the sniper mask or the great angel that come to have menorables moments and to be interesting without having the need to go deep into them.

The protagonist, Yuri Honjou, is the one that I consider the worst character in the whole manga, has no chemistry with other characters purs its personality is totally boring and does not generate any unpredictable dialogue or a competent dialogue for the plot, because Yuri always talks about how he wants save all and typical things of this type of manga, it would be justifiable if Yuri will present some kind of evolution, but never notice a noticeable change in it (oh if it is opaque because they wanted to put elements Badass to Yuri to do very powerful and that is noted by the approaches that put the drawing when she fights), also that throughout the first half of the series Yuri always saves because he remembers advice from his brother (which is a cheap excuse), what more decent is that she is the one that has the most credible objective to the beginning is well planned for the plot (its design is normal, but not bad).

Other characters such as Yoshida, Kuon, Kazuma (the scientist) and capable (only capable) Nise are somewhat decent for how they perform with the other characters, generating a change to the characters around them and evolve, the death of Kazuma it is the best of the manga for how it changes in the others (especially in Ain, but it's a pity that she never shows that change by making the character feel empty and unused).

others like Rise and Yoshida change in a credible way, because Rise felt for the first time a great affection towards someone, which intensifies and makes their relationship real, the only unpleasant thing about Rise is that his personality is obscured or simply afterwards it is not explored ( final is totally forgotten), besides that his past is nuy edgy, but that is passable.

Yoshida on the other hand is the archetype of character who always wants to do the right thing, very similar to the protagonist, but Yoshida in itself presents more humanity and looks a bit more like a real character, even near the end of the manga he offered his body to the administrator in order to be able to be strong and achieve their goals, realizing that what he did is wrong he sacrifices himself to save Yuri's life, which suggests that in the end the whole magician Yoshida could achieve his goal to be of great help and actually if it became strong, it is difficult to sacrifice your life for another.

Kuon is the character that generates the sniper mask can evolve a bit, generating a contrast between mask and human living in the mumdo, expanding the possibilities of mangaka to develop a relationship (also that naturally presents the fact that there are people who They can control the masks, besides that Kuon is a character that unlike most manga characters, does not decay, his personality is not spoiled or become a deus ex machina for having the strongest power of the manga, which is appreciable because at various times the tension was intact because they did not abuse that elemnto, Kuon does not present any evolution which does not seem to be something totally horrible, Kuon throughout the manga I present a lot of determination and even impact a bit with his death, but then "survive" and explain it in a decent way (and I take this parenthesis to say that the design of all these characters is nor bad, there are designs like that of the sniper mask that you have left because it combines with his personality).

This part I would like to focus on some specific characters, if I do not talk about some narrative element or character is simply because it is irrelevant, although I will use to say that the dialogue is quite mediocre, often giving unintelligent insinuations on a topic and without memorable phrases or interesting that drive the plot, because almost the whole plot advances with the action, many characters that contribute in dialogue are discarded totally (as the scientist Kazuma who contributed giving intelligent and scientific comments and the prophet who was responsible for putting together a strategy, just as Rika and the mask sniper, those characters save a bit the dialogue), returning to the subject wanted to talk about just the large number of characters that are finally forgotten, all the characters who died before are not remembered and the "antagonist" Aikawa is totally forgotten and do not even mention it, the prophet and the angel guardian fighter appear very little and u importance is minimal despite the potential they could give, the characters added near the end the only decent is Juo, with a more cruel and simplistic philosophy so that he can survive in the world, generating disputes with all the characters and even having a reflection before dying (the chapter when he dies is amazing, the drawing they make to his facial expression is incredible and that pleases because the facial expressions are not the strong of the manga, also the angle that they put to his death, falling towards the floor just behind a bottle that says "favof not vote baaura", an ironic death with a reflection at the end, very well achieved).

The drawing of the manga seems accurate, with good shots at the right time and with interesting and unique perspectives (the drawings of the landscape with all the buildings was very good), the manga has a lot of censorship and that spoils the emotion because the manga itself is not so graphic as to censor some parts (although much censorship is for the panties of the female characters), the drawing also evolved throughout the publication of the manga, which is noted and appreciated, I would say that this is the best point that has the manga because the perspectives that make everyone with all the buildings drawn is incredible, but the approaches they do are not very suitable since several only have the intention of showing panties shamelessly while in action scenes He opts for a more common plane, but when the guardian angels appear that changes radically (emphasis on the appearance of the guardian angel who was a wrestling wrestler).

The end of the manga is disappointing, all the questions raised by the manga were not even resolved in a subtle way, the final stage had been built during many episodes just for the final battle to say one or two episodes, besides that they made Yuri too powerful making no enemy seem a threat and that was reflected in the end, the emotional moment of the end were very fast which prevents me from empathizing with the characters, the dialogue is still just as concise and the end left many things open and without solution (the same thing happened to Dolly Kill Kill and Eden No Ori, they had so many topics to explore and they were wasted making a dull ending that can hardly be considered an end).

To summarize the things I would say that Tenkuu Shinpan is another case of wasted manga, few good characters, mediocre dailogo, a plot with very good base but bad development, interesting element, but little used, an interesting final scenario poorly executed and a protagonist very op , at least he had an incredible drawing and the first half is more than entertaining, that saves the manga from making it a bad work. Despite everything said, it is likely that I will remember manga because it was one of the first I read, but I would not even think about recommending it to anyone.

TLDR: Although it has an interesting concept and a strong start, the plot starts slipping around the middle point and ends in an unsatisfying manner.

The first 80 chapters are probably as good as the manga gets. With the world slowly unravelling itself, new characters are being introduced while still struggling to survive. It felt it could've been a very special manga within the survival game genre. You are filled with questions and excitement towards the future of the series.

To be honest, I only read this because I thought Sniper Mask was attractive (and he is LOL the manga does not disappoint on that). I have mixed feelings about this manga. It's very gory and violent from the very first chapter, with people committing suicide by jumping off high-rises and exploding on impact. However, the shock factor gets old after the 10th person dies in the very exact way by like chapter 7. However, the chapters are short and easy to read, so I kept reading.

I think the story is actually interesting from chapters 1 to 150. The world-building is cool, the characters are ... interesting, and the concept of masked people programmed to kill people by making them commit suicide is novel. The main character Yuri and her best friend Nise have a really natural and well-developed relationship, and it's cool to see two strong female leads. Best of all, Sniper Mask has some really cool scenes (<3).

When I read manga, I seem to be possessed by some kind of speed-reading manga ghost and I obsessively read until I finish the manga (which ranges from a few hours to a few days). Although I kept up the same pace I do with most mangas, by chapter 150, I felt this urge to drop it. It wasn't really fun to read anymore. Once they defeat the Big Bad, there's still about 70 chapters to go making me wonder how the mangaka was going to conclude it well. He doesn't. The previously set rules of the world just go out the window, and it feels like the mangaka was just adding random stuff whenever he liked. The main character suddenly becomes super OP and fights "God," people start developing random powers, and the concept of the masks just doesn't make sense anymore. There were so many moments where I had to stop reading and say "There is no way this is really happening right now..." I dropped it for about two weeks but came back because I felt the strong urge to find out what happened, and honestly I wish I just stopped reading around chapter 150. They end up defeating the Bigger Bad with their new random OP powers and nothing gets resolved. No overarching questions end up getting answered, they willingly decide to in the same world they were trying to escape from for the past 230 chapters, and that's it. That's how it ends.

It's unsatisfying and really disappointing to read, but I don't want to rate it any lower because it really is fun and interesting and thrilling to read for a large portion of the manga. It's just the rushed conclusion that ruins the whole manga.

I don't think that I'd recommend it to any of my friends, but maybe I'd tell them to stop once they defeat Big Bad and not continue onwards for their sanity.

This story is quite entertaining from beginning to end. The story develops suspense in nearly every chapter and always leaves you second-guessing what will happen next. Unfortunately, the story's ending was rushed and leaves a rather undesirable, inconclusive end.

The art itself is really well done. There is a lot of gore, a lot of ecchi scenes (which unfortunately were censored from the official online English localization, but are available in print form in some localizations), and the action is spectacular.

Paces out the unraveling of the world's mystery very well for most of the series. Seems like they had fun coming up with abilities for characters as the plot needed them. That was interesting to watch unfold. Final reveal of the structure of this universe was personally underwhelming, and the tidying up of the plot in the final & epilogue chapters may make readers go "Huh? What? Why?"

To be honest, I found this manga very entertaining, and what I mean when I say "entertaining" is that I at least was eager to continue reading and discover what would happen next. I think the author was very creative on devising this dystopian world, because, although it shares some similarities to other stories out there, it still managed to have some unique aspects such as the masks and the types, people being controlled by a program that controls brains and unlocks powers depending on the person. I also liked the plots twists such as Sniper Mask and Rika being siblings, Kusakabe ... being Uzuki's mom, Okihara betraying everyone (because he did not look like the type), among others. With that being said, I did have some problems with the manga:
1-I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending, as I felt it answered virtually no questions that readers have since the first page of this manga, in regards to how people got there, what this realm was, why was it created, how is it terminated, does the group end up stuck there or going back to the original world, what does being close to God and becoming a God mean? who is the supervisor? I can't say the ending was inconclusive, because it did have a conclusion with the remaining people living in harmony and Yuri becoming the administrator...but I kept thinking that it is just something temporary until people start to get bored because of not having a daily goal or routine (like school, work, etc). The only question clearly answered was the relationship between the Sniper Mask and Rika, but even that answer, gives you more questions such as how come they both ended up in the same place? wasn't Sniper Mask living abroad?
2- I also felt there were many gaps in the story such as:
-at the end (special chapter) it was said guardian masks are protecting the people therefore they couldn't get food...protecting people from what if there was no more killing?
-what is going to happen with Kuon if they ever go back to the original world? can't they create a body just like the guardian angels' and put her consciousness there? and also, what made Kuon so powerful if the girl could barely do anything for herself?
-How come Rika knew so much about guns and life in general?
-How come Yuri was so good with guns?
3-there were too many things happening at once, which often made me a bit lost and feeling like the objective was lost (I found very funny that even Yuri seemed to feel the same way towards the end).
4-Why were Rika and Yuka so obsessed with being cool?
5-I did not like how much attention was put into Rika feeling like he lied to his sister by not telling her they were not blood related but that worry was completely dismissed by just 2 words by the end of the manga. I would have liked them to have a least a conversation about it.
6-hated how short chapters were

Although drawings were not bad, I failed to understand the need or purpose behind constantly showing women's underwear or drawing highly sexual posses that had zero relationship with the story at all. I felt that that was overused and really took away some seriousness from the manga itself.

Character 7/10
I liked the diversity of characters and how most of them had a defined personality, despite being controlled by the mask. There isn't much character development, because strong characters were strong since we were introduced to them and just kept getting stronger. What I mean is, I wasn't surprised to see who the strongest by the end were because they were the same strong ones since the beginning. Would have liked to be surprised by an underdog being the stronger. If I had to chose a favorite character I would say Sniper Mask, although I also really like Nise-chan and Yuri (both because of their tenacity and strong will). I did find a bit odd Nise's infatuation with Yuri. I also found Dai-chan very funny and I think somebody should just burn that justice suit for him! He was very cute and I totally ship him and Nise (although I have a feeling Nise likes Yuri?). My least favorite I would have to say is Kuon, because, again, she was supposed to be so strong but yet was unable to do anything by herself unless completely being forced to.

Enjoyment 7/10
I really enjoyed reading this, mostly because I like stories that keep you wanting more. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, but it wouldn't be fair to judge the whole story based on the last chapter because it did have a "conclusion" (although I already expressed how many unanswered questions it left).

Easy to read and has a unique touch to it while still maintaining the classic balance. The system of characters fits well with the story, and the heroine eventhough not being the best one, is also the most suitable in the storyline. At least it's better to have lucky and courageous with no real strength like other manga with female protagonist.

The minus for the story is the forced ecchi scenes (sometimes it's good and sometimes it's unnecessary and too much of coincidence) and the appearance of the brother, kind of losing the impact that should have been expected since he was built through the ...

This manga is creative to the point of showing a kind of common dread in humans that I personally had never seen portrayed in that way. The fear of the unknown, the despair of being suddenly thrown into a new reality that you are totally unaware of is a factor present in many stories, both manga and Western bestsellers, and so it can be said that there is an expectation when reading any of these stories. Tenkuu Shinpan, or High-Rise Invasion recently popped up in a lot of people's rear-view mirrors with the upcoming Netflix anime adaptation. For me, it was a refresher of this insane series I read about a year ago. And as the memories came flushing back to me as I sat there watching the absolutely grotesque animation (I mean seriously, the adaptation is NOT garnering any admiration from me right now), I got an urge to revisit the series and give it a thorough examination for a review. And then I remembered why I forgot it existed.

Story: 5
Why must interesting premises always derail into non-sensical battle ... shonen antics? I loved the hell out of the beginning of Tenkuu Shinpan, unabashed in its inexplicable insanity, the harmonious accompaniment of irrationality and dark-natured themes. Indeed Tenkuu Shinpan was more than a purely shocking, graphic manga that reveled in bloodshed. There was a plot there and while I do realize now that some of it was quite tedious (Sniper mask) but with just how irrational everything was, I found my eyes glued to the screen for "what's next?" constantly. It garners attention like flies to honey and moths to light, but similarly to flies to honey, it goes downhill pretty quickly. All the negative aspects of the earlier chapters increase in the later chapters, introducing a wide array of uninteresting characters and power scaling that quite frankly, I wasn't invested in. Why would I read a thriller, articulate in its foreboding and dread to watch characters battle it out with superhuman powers and abilities? Mystery soon turns into over-the-top shonen type action. The moment the story lost its subtlety placed thriller aspects, it lost its beauty and appeal.

It's not flagrantly bad but definitely not worthy of praise which really sucks because someone like Makoto Shinkai would KILL on the artwork above the high-rise buildings with drop-dead gorgeous backgrounds. It's not even artistically dark and dreary like Akira. It's generic while still somehow managing to be draining on the eyes with these boring character designs and lack of variety in settings.

It's more than the uninteresting monotone character designs that make me bored with their actions but their trope-filling personalities as well that make me look at everything that's happening EXCEPT the characters. They are literal meat sticks surrounded by gore and to be quite frank, the horror is toned down when none of the major characters ever die or even come to a near-death moment. And the attempts at near death moments are toned down by the fact that so much is happening that the premise starts to become a double-edged sword. I can't bring myself to believe that our Mary Sue of a protagonist meets the same gory fate as the random side characters that we see for a single panel and I definitely can't see the Gary Stu of a character that her brother even close to death. The characters don't create tension, the comic relief they bring is often times awkward (not the good way either), sexualized in a way that make me wonder what the hell the mangaka is trying to do, and generic beyond compare. And when random characters start gaining these out of this world powers and getting backstories, it becomes even more tedious with its shameful attempt at making us care for any of the characters.

Despite its issues, I can't help but cherish this manga a little bit. It was honestly the first of its kind I've seen with such a unique setting and innately terror inducing plot. It's like Higurashi but the openness of its nature make it that much more terrifying. Even the final arc, at times, feels like a parody of overblown superhero movies with its extreme backstory nuanced characters and power scaling. And while the ecchi does seem directionless, it gives the manga a mature vibe, realistic in the dread it wants to convey.

Overall, Tenkuu Shinpan isn't really worth 238 chapters of time. It's great in the beginning albeit with some noticeable issues and gets really strange and contrived later. There's no ultimate moral or lesson, even the themes are wasted, but I don't think it's all down in the dumps. Certainly this is my most negative 5/10 but the feeling of reading this fairly unknown manga for the first time was quite the experience.

As I said, Tenkuu Shinpan also known as High-Rise Invasion is a 5/10 for me.

It started off really well, created unique intriguing, surreal universe, but later wandered into the realm of fighting oriented narrative.

Every single character has to state his ambition/determination every other sentence.

Every ten or fifteen chapters one of the characters gains totally unannounced and ridiculous abillity and is now 'Oh, he is now the most powerful one in this universe', just to create fake plot twist.

The actual plot progresses really slowly with some of the chapters serving as fillers - there was a chapter in which there was only a single phone call in which one of the characters told the other, what happened in previous three ...

High-rise Invasion is a mystery manga. The characters are sucked into an alternative dimension where only high-rise buildings exist. The buildings are connected by sky bridges.
