I am both not surprised, yet also disappointed in the RWBY team for this one. When they announced they'd be doing a Weiss-focused anime series, I was thrilled, but had an air of trepidation to it, as well. RWBY's writing tends to be rather... well. I had hoped that, since this wasn't a main series title, it would potentially perform better. The preview art looked promising, I didn't hate the art style (for the most part).
Things fell apart in the first episode. Throughout the entire series, it's almost painful to look at. There are moments where the animation and character art work and choreography
...
are just absolutely stunning. Like. Amazingly well done. And you can tell all of the budget went into those singular key shots and sequences, because the next scene would drop in quality like crazy. The art and animation weren't consistent throughout the entire show and at times were just... some of the ugliest animation I've seen in a long time. Visually, this anime adaptation isn't up to snuff.
Then the story. Oh. Oh the story. One of my least favorite thing about the RWBY franchise is that there is so much potential there. It has such an interesting premise. It has a great cast of characters and voice actors. Now, it has some pretty amazing visuals in the main series. But the writing makes everything fall apart. The writers are just plain bad. This hardly felt like a Weiss-centric plot. Sure, they had to go in her brain and deal with all of that, but the entire time, it didn't feel like we actually got to explore Weiss' backstory and thoughts. They were all just surface level things and hints that anyone who watches the main series would get, but not receive any further details regarding it. Just confirming things we already knew.
I wouldn't recommend anyone waste their time on this show. The actual RWBY series, I could recommend with mixed feelings. I both love and hate RWBY. I adore Weiss Schnee an unhealthy amount. I find her riveting and intriguing, with her character having gone through the most development throughout the show. So, I found this entire thing both insulting and a huge, major disappointment. Save yourself the time and just watch the main series, if you're interested in RWBY at all. It would be a much better experience, even with the quality of Volume 1's artwork and budget.

Shadows House has quickly become one of my favorite series from the past few seasons. I am fully caught up with the manga; and, while the story doesn't follow along with the manga exactly - which tends to frustrate, somewhat - it is still such a compelling show that nails a lot of the characterizations of the main protagonists.
The voice actors kill it in this series; they're all so distinct and full of emotion. You really get such a good feel for each of the individual characters through the animation and the voice acting. It's pretty incredible. The characters are memorable, unique, and interesting.
...
The story that they weave through is also unique, with a concept I haven't seen before. Which, amongst all the isekai and ecchi harem anime that tends to run amuck, something with an actual story premise is very refreshing. I'm thrilled to see where the manga and the anime takes things. I'm sure we'll be getting a season 3 announcement any time soon.

I may be quite a bit late to the game, but I just finished Odd Taxi and I have to say, it blew my expectations out of the water. I'd managed to stay spoiler free, despite the show's apparent popularity. I'd heard the title "Odd Taxi" over and over again last year. I figured I'd give it a shot some day; and I did.
I know some people find the interconnecting plots somewhat difficult to follow, or that they feel rushed. To an extent, that's understandable, though we have to remember that the show is only 12 episodes long. It might have been a bit
...
too ambitious with the amount of content it wanted to use in its story; however, I really think Odd Taxi is worth the watch. It's not my top anime of all time, but the story is genuinely good and interesting. The premise that isn't revealed until the end was incredibly satisfying, as well. The interconnecting plot lines intermingling between all these characters kind of reminded me of the formatting of "Sing", which was a part of that movie I particularly enjoyed. It sets up a decent mystery and I believe the end pulled it off pretty well.

As a long time fan of Bushiroad's various idol projects, I was very excited to start D4DJ. I fell in love with it the very first episode and immediately got my girlfriend on board with me. We've been keeping up with it every single week, absolutely enthralled with these characters.
I love the music most of the groups have; I've been listening to the singles non stop since I found out about this series. Very excited for the English server of the game coming out also! But the music isn't the only thing that does it for this show. Of course, being a music and
...
idol genre series, it does perform in that regard as well. But, the key factor here is absolutely the fun and colorful cast of characters that we have running around.
Photon Maiden and Peaky P-Key are so fun and interesting, and I hope we get a second season to explore them and the other bands as well. But Happy Around! stole our hearts. These four girls have such strong chemistry as a group and as characters, just sitting there and watching them talk was so entertaining and has been the highlight of our week. The expression work and modeling of the show are great and make for such a fun style.
I do have to say that it was rather jarring every time they switched between the main 3D models of the star cast/unit members, the 3D models of the other background students, and the 2D style of the more relevant side characters. I hope if we do get a second season that they improve on this, since that is my one critique of the show.
All in all I had such a good experience, just as I did with the first 2 seasons of Love Live and the Bandori series. Looking forward to more D4DJ!

In an era where girls love and yuri titles are rare, a lesbian's gotta eat right? So I tend to watch anything that's even yuri leaning. Which is how I started watching Adachi to Shimamura in the first place. The art style is cute, the girls are fun, and there's lots of yearning. What more could a girl want? For all of that to go somewhere, probably.
I have not read the manga, so I don't know if anything was resolved further there. But,,, even the Bloom Into You anime got further. I wasn't ever bored watching that; I had to skip through quite a

bit of Adachi to Shimamura because it tended to drag on quite a bit without ever really going anywhere. There were also just some elements that felt out of place and random? Like the alien girl and Shimamura's childhood friend felt stapled on and not properly explored or explained.
And... god I was hoping for a confession. It was just a lot of baiting and they REALLY leaned into the yearning. Which, is fine! I love yearning as much as anyone else! But... I prefer for that yearning to have payoff and to feel satisfying. Which, the ending of this anime just didn't. It didn't really do anything with either girls' feelings and... that sucked a bit.
The bits that were good were good, and I really liked the dynamic between the two leads and even the supporting cast. But... it's just too forgettable. It's very plain Jane and flowery, not really doing anything new or interesting. I really hate to be a downer and leave this series with such a bummer outlook, but I've gotta say I'm a bit disappointed with it.

Okay okay okay, so Kaguya-sama right? I went into this show without a lot of expectations. I'd seen how popular it was when it first aired and just thought that it was another crappy straight person anime filled with straight romance for straight people. Those tend to get pretty boring pretty quick anyway, even to other hetero folks, but to a gay person??? Yawn. But I knew that the openings for the two seasons that are out were bangers, so my girlfriends and I decided to give it a try.
Quickly - more than I ever could have anticipated - Love is War has become one

of our favorite series hands down. No questions asked. We immediately fell in love with the characters who are all so incredibly stupid and endearing in their own ways. The cast is stellar in their ability to convey these characters; and what great, well-written characters they are.
The pacing is great and it's hardly ever boring sitting through and watching. Each gag and joke lands and is so incredibly funny. This is truly such a good romcom that doesn't take itself seriously at all; except, when it does, it makes you want to cry. It's a fun, lighthearted, ridiculous story about two idiots trying to force the other to confess first with some actual backstory and a hint of seriousness that gives the characters and the show the drive it needs. I can't recommend this series enough.

Man oh man, I've been waiting months on this to launch! I'm seeing a lot of mixed opinions on it from other reviewers, but I'll just say it blew me away! I was trying my best not to hype it up in my mind, but it managed to exceed my expectations entirely. I definitely hope, despite how unlikely it is, that this will be developed into a full fledged series, because the potential is amazing.
The animation is smooth and super high quality, the choreography is amazing, and the visuals are just very pleasant and engaging. I found the two main characters very interesting, personally.
...
Ninny is an automatic fave from me.
The world building is pretty neat! Not entirely original but vague enough to be expanded on and twisted into something new. The concept of Front and Shadow London is pretty cool! I kind of want to know more about how that works! The world building and overall plot would be phenomenal for a longer show, and I really would love to have more. Like... what are the repercussions of traveling between the two? Do some of the characters have split lives based in each world, what is that like? I think this is so cool!
Also, I just love dragons and girls being badass so... I'm all here for this! I enjoyed it a lot and really hope that there's more of this!

So... Tower of God huh. It's been on my To Watch list for a hot minute. I'll also say I went in blind, without reading (or even knowing there was) the comic. The concept seemed interesting - I'm always a sucker for the whole mysterious tower bit. I won't say the characters seemed interesting from the start; Bam(?) Yoru? Whatever his name was, he and Rachel weren't the most interesting grabs for me. But the art and style, the incredible quality of the animation, all of that was captivating to me!
I grew to like a lot of the characters and their bonds and trials were
...
enough to get me past the fact that the "tower" was just a training camp. I understand there's more than what I was prepared for, I fully intend to go and read the comic when I have the chance, but I'm basing my opinions based on what I've been given so far. There was some interesting world building and... lore? I guess? A lot of infodumping later and not finding out anything by pure happenstance, I think I get the picture. Or I might not, considering that I couldn't really wrap my head around most of the little side stories going on.
I won't spoil anything, but there's a particular character I'm very disappointed in the direction the show took them in and I'm hoping the comic does them more justice or at least gives them proper motivations if they truly are going to go the more villain route. I'm not a fan of shows leaving me, on the last episode, feeling like everything we just got through as the audience and "companion" to the protags was a waste of time.
Again, I truly think the sound engineering, special effects, art, character design, and animation were all on point. The voice acting was also fairly decent! I just don't understand the writing and story choices that were made. Again, don't know if this had anything to do with the comic, but the anime could improve on a few things, for sure.

SO! Hamefura was NOT on my list of potential favorites this season. Man oh man was I wrong! It has turned out to be such a pleasant surprise that caters to everything I wanted and needed and loved and didn't know that I did. This show delivers when I didn't even order.
I won't summarize since the page already has a summary, but I think that this is such a unique direction to take an isekai in. And I know many people would agree with me on that! We're used to isekai being about carnage and falling into a world that's filled with dangers and monsters
...
and high stakes drama. And while some of them are amazing (still looking forward to the Re:zero sequel) some of them... not so much. It can be so tiring of watching a show that's just about gore and war.
Which is definitely why there has been a surge of lighthearted, fun isekai anime to choose from. However, Hamefura stands out from the others in that the world the protagonist falls into is... a dating sim. An otome game. For a girl otaku, this should be heaven right? (Unless you're a lesbian like me, but honestly this show has been catering to me in that department too, but we'll get to that.)
It should be heaven. But Katerina is the RIVAL CHARACTER. Not the protagonist. And if you're familiar with dating sims, that's usually bad news. Dating sims - particularly Japanese Otome games are BRUTAL. Absolutely dark and wild sometimes. Even the good endings can mean some bad ends for the rival.
This show would be interesting even if Katerina was the intended protagonist! She's just such an interesting and fun character anyway, but added with the premise and the rest of the cast, the chemistry is amazing. The cast is filled with the usual stereotypical otome game romance route types with fun little twists to them. And, even if they're pandering, I appreciate the girl character's appreciation for Katerina. Won't spoil much but... there's no way all the characters are straight. And that's definitely a winning factor for me.
All in all, it's just such an endearing and lovely show to get into. It made me binge the manga that I didn't even know existed because I could not get enough. I sit here on Sundays now waiting for Hamefura to post like I'm an addict waiting on their dealer.
It's just such a fun, lighthearted show and I can't wait to see the rest of it!

Ah, Ascendance of a Bookworm, the series I was most looking forward to this season. And I know I'm not the only one.
Isekai has become a VERY popular genre. We all know this. Some of them are great! Some of them... not so much. But, Ascendance of a Bookworm is a show I highly recommend to anyone even slightly intrigued by the concept of being sent to another world. Having finished the first season, I can say that with confidence. Especially since that quality has continued on with season 2.
In a show without a lot of action and combat, the characters and the
...
plot and the worldbuilding have to be on point. Luckily for us, Bookworm nails those elements perfectly. I am intrigued by every single character they plop in front of us and they fit into the story so well. Main is a wonderful protagonist, and the idea of telling her story from the perspective of a child is such an interesting concept.
This season continue's Main's story as she dons her Blue Priestess apprentice robes and takes on the trials of the church in order to save herself from her mana eating disease. That's a lot for a seven year old to go through. Plus having to win over almost everyone in the church that seems to hate her? That's rough.
I think Bookworm is setting up a great story here with the potential for something big. Again, it does its world building and it does it well. It has its incredibly funny moments, with jokes that really land. It has its lighthearted and cute moments that make me gush and fall in love with the show and its characters and the world they live in. But then it has hardships and serious moments that make me hate everyone that's ever done wrong in this world. It's immersive, it's enjoyable, it's addictive and I highly recommend that anyone who isn't watching or reading Ascendance of a Bookworm to correct that immediately and hop on board!
