Fun and distinct plot, the art gets much better as the series progresses. Like a Mitsuru Adachi manga about playing rap rock in the early 2000s. There is probably no better manga treatment of rock music than this, but as much as Sakuishi wants you to think BECK sounds awesome, there is no way they sound good at all.
After reading the comic I felt like I wanted more development in all of the characters. Characters do not see major growth in the series even though it spans about 6 years, and major conflicts are kind of waved away or handled through deus ex machina stuff.

To get out of the way: the porno stuff is a pretty funny fanservice indulgence from Boichi that is absolutely there. Sexualization of every female character is there from the start; it's unavoidable and must be recognized. Not all women are powerless in the comic, but most are, and used as sexual fodder. Every woman looks the same.
Moving beyond it, however, the plot, its pacing and the art are all incredible. Sun-Ken Rock moves! Yet it keeps its focus very clear. Paces out the unraveling of the world's mystery very well for most of the series. Seems like they had fun coming up with abilities for characters as the plot needed them. That was interesting to watch unfold. Final reveal of the structure of this universe was personally underwhelming, and the tidying up of the plot in the final & epilogue chapters may make readers go "Huh? What? Why?"
Overall, it's fine, and while the portioning out of plot unveils definitely kept me reading, nothing felt dire or strongly engaging. There are just too many characters for a reader to be believably relatable, but it was ... |
