Similar stories, students wanting to be the best at something (Go for Hikaru no Go and Manga for Bakuman). They have rivals that are better than them, though the main characters practice a lot to reach their dream. Even though the stories are about Go and Manga, there is a lot of character drama in each. Takeshi Obata does the illustrations for both manga series.

at first they don't have much passion for the game, but after a while, they come to love it.

Both are drawn by the talented Takeshi Obata. Even if the story is totally different, in both the main character has a shinigami/spirit that follows him around.

Replace the game of Go with a Card Game and it's almost the same. Both Characters have someone else within them helping them play a certain game, both of which found these spirits within an old relic of some type. The Stories are different but the set up is very similar.

They don't have the same topic (one piano/music, the other one go) but the characters and setting are quite similar: - both have a character that has learned playing piano/go from an early age and aims to be the best - both have a main character that learns about his passion from above character - both have a special teacher who guides the main character Both also have quite a bit of humour :)

A ghost/shinigami appears to the heroes as teachers and then the boys want to become better in the game/sport. They both have explanations too so readers don't get confused.

Many readers probably don't think the same, but there is some very crucial similarities with Alive and Hikago. 1 is feeling, 2 is the ultimate meaning of the manga. Both mangas trick you into thinking it's a generic shounen manga with a train, fight, train, fight equation and a slightly stupid and hot headed young MC. but in reality, both mangas are about life and they present it in such a unique and wonderful way. There is not many, if not, very little moments where we'll see the MC or other characters get powerups or training, of course they will gradually improve as they progress, but  read more

Not completely similar, but there a quite a few common elements. Somewhat of a delinquent main character, the focus on a traditional Japanese passtime (HnG= the game of Go, KoT= playing the Koto), the struggles to improve, one genius player raised in the game/instrument by their family, a solid supporting cast, and Hikaru no Go does have some club type elements more at the beginning as well. There's a decent balance of comedy in both, and they both make something that you would probably actually find boring seem very interesting and engaging. HnG has a supernatural element to it, and is more focused on the rival  read more

Both slice of life manga's, in both the main character goes into something completely different which he know's nothing about (guitar, go), both start with the main character as a kid and watch him grow (and drop out of high school).

Hikaru no Go and Smash! both deal with sports where japan is weaker than the rest of Asia. But beyond that, the "action", progression, and endings in both feel similar, and the art is also similar, although Hikaru no Go is better in both. If you liked Smash!, Hikaru no Go is worth a read. If you liked Hikaru no Go, Smash! is worth a try.

Both stories feature main characters that are new to the game of Go and Shogi respectively as they grow bit by bit throughout the series. Go and Shogi are both very similar board games from Japan, so the concepts of both series are very alike.

Both main characters are possessed by one of the greats of their discipline, both look to become skilled in their own crafts without the need of their respective ghosts.

A manga about Go; Hoshizora no Karasu is a shoujo manga, so it has romantic elements.

Kimi no Tame ni Hiku Chopin is basically the shoujo version of Hikaru no Go. One is about Go and the other about piano, but they share the same premise of ghosts of a famous real life genius of the past teaches a complete novice their profession while at constant risk of being discovered for having some hidden supernatural talent. Hikaru no Go, being shounen, focuses on competition, rivals, and training, while Kimi no Tame ni Hiku Chopin is more concerned with romance.

Both are centred in board games (in March Comes in Like a Lion the board game is Shogi, and in Hikaru no Go is the game called Go). In Hikaru no Go the main character, Hikaru Shindou, initialy didn’t care about this type of game, yet that all changes when he start to be guided by Sai. Of course, the relationship between them are mostly probably not as simple. In March Comes in Like a Lion, Rei Kiriyama, the main character, is a prodigy. In both mangas they both develop their strategy skills and deal with friendships and losses yet they go to it in  read more

now these mangas are very interesting. these mangas are more specific to my tastes; I really like concepts that involve people being possessed and they develop a relationship with the thing possessing them. that is my preference and I hope that it appeals to other people who read this.

Quite the same similar feeling with Sai,a legendary go player helping Hikaru to develop as a Go player and Keisuke,a master surgeon helping Tasuku and they both are ghost
reportRecommended by kaitonic
-main characters enter into professional fields (go and voice acting) -they are extremely good at the beginning because they have something that gives them an edge (Sai and the princely voice) -overtime they have to stop relying on that special circumstance and they are shoved back to beginner level -they work hard to enter into the field on their own without extra help

Yeah, it may seem a weird recomendation, but I found the character relationships and personalities and the way they devolped through out the manga was remarkably similar to Naruto. And if you replace go with being a ninja, the simmilarities become even clearer.

Both series are about a relatively ordinary boy who, after a supernatural encounter that leaves him playing proxy for an otherworldly entity, demonstrates tremendous innate ability at and enthusiasm for his new job.
reportRecommended by lithiumflower
Both series sport a protagonist who starts off with little skill at his game/sport of choice but comes to develop at a rapid pace due to both guidance from those around him and innate natural ability.

Both involve rather unconventional subjects for a manga, but work oh-so-well. They involve a brash young kid with insurmountable determination and a certain edge or another that catches the eyes of many others in his destined field. Both are fairly sizable stories, great art, and will make you check out something you never thought you'd get into... They basically have alot of parallels as far as story and character elements go, and I can pretty much assure a fan of either series will find it easy to get into the other.

Hikaru No Go artworks done by Takeshi Obata along with Bakuman, Death Note, and Blue Dragon Ral Grado.

Both are laden with intricate strategies of some sort of combat (chess versus actual war) throughout the entirety of the manga.
reportRecommended by Rampant
Both are about japanese boardgames. Shion no Ou is a much more serious series though.

Katana and Hiraku no Go are similar because a boy can see the spirit attached to an certain object and therefore gets interested in things to do with the object. Hiraku no Go is about a boy that meets a spirit attached to a Go board, and gets interested in Go. Katana is about a boy that can see the spirit of any Katana and gets interested in katana's. Both have a certain educational level for you can learn a lot about some aspects of Japanese culture.

Hikaru no Go is about a board game and Ice Revolution is about figure skating, but they have very similar main characters. Both of them become good at what they do very quickly to chase someone, and both of the mangas have the tournament-based pattern.

Both are fantastic coming of age stories, the best two I've ever read, with fantastic characters and a story that will awaken the dreamer in all of us. They both even have awesome ghost mentors!
reportRecommended by zawa113
They're similar because they both involve a ghost that's playing instead of the main protagonist but also hinting that the protagonist himself has great potential.
reportRecommended by feyndaft
Both are shounen manga series dealing with a young protagonist and his spiritual companion.
reportRecommended by Zaky-Zura
Have a wide variety of awesome characters, have the main protagonist very good at what they're doing; both have the same type of intensity. Also, both are set up in a tournament type mode.
