Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata, or The Summer You Were There, is the sort of manga you approach expecting full well to be sad, and it still manages to leave you utterly devastated by the end. It’s the sort of manga where you earnestly hope for the happiness of all involved, though, deep down, you realise that seldom is reality so simple. It’s a manga where turning to the next page transforms into a daunting task, with each chapter feeling like another step towards an unavoidable conclusion.
If I stay here, on this page, time stands still. If I stay here, on this page, the inevitable will

The very first thing I feel the need to tell you is that this manga is utterly devastating. It most certainly will leave you feeling empty, sad or overwhelmed so read it at your own discretion.
With that out of the way, let me start explaining why you SHOULD read this. Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata is a manga written and illustrated by Yuama. It tells the story of Hoshikawa Shizuku, a girl who has abandoned her future and how she comes across a girl as bright as the sun to light her path. It presents itself in a particularly enthralling way. Both of the characters are ... Jan 21, 2024
*The Summer You Were There* is a story about a single, prolonged cry into the literary night that came dangerously close to getting lost in the wind. Hoshikawa Shizuku was the author of that cry, but shortly after having completed her first novel, she cannot bear the thought of it staying online anymore once it gets exposed. Perhaps even egged on (albeit unintentionally) by the online commenters that are baffled by the novel’s content and can only respond the way commenters sometimes do on sites of that nature, she deletes a year’s worth of work and seeks to discard the manuscript. Her apprehension is the

Man, it seems like the yuri/shoujo-ai genre is going through some kind of renaissance, what with so many of those titles being ported to the US, and several of them actually managing to range from good to amazing. I don't typically find myself reading a lot of yuri or shoujo-ai manga, more due to lack of time and lack of interest in romance in general, but these past few years I read some really good ones, such as Goodbye My Rose Garden and Yume no Hashibashi, not to mention all the ones that are much more frank about exploring LGBT themes. I do plan on

I'm rly big fan of yuri manga and I was looking for something good, that is not so popular and gosh I'm rly happy I found it. This little hidden gem. I could recommend this series to anyone to be honest, because story's core is not yuri, it is only small addition so a bigger picture, it's well attached to the plot but I don't think it would be a problem for people who are not fans of Yuri genre, It's easy to read all chapters in one session, you just want more and more, so suddenly you look there is no more so far...

As a gentleman who enjoys the classics; Death Note, Black Lagoon (Revy IS best girl, fight me), Monster ect. This type of manga is not my usual jam.
I started reading it by accident thinking that it was something else, and by the time that I realised what it was, too late and I couldn't stop. It has now been over two weeks and this story has stuck with me more than anything else that I have read so far. Hoshikawa Shizuku, a high school girl just wishing to disappear after finishing her one and only novel, meets and makes a deal with the diminutive Asaka ... Apr 2, 2024
10/10,the term masterpiece was made for manga like this
For a manga about expressing emotions through writing over speech, this is a lot to express. I am shocked i have never heard of this and im glad i didnt because you cant spoil this. Never have i evey had such a strong emotion or even physical reaction to a piece of media, ever. Every characters depiction hits so close to home it hurts, story like this cant be told without characters like these and its cast is perfect. Everyone here feels like a real person, in a way that know other anime or manga has done before, these characters ... Dec 1, 2021
As a big fan of yuri manga I keep reading a lot of yuri manga but this one is really good and very underrated and not as popular as it should be. So far I have read till chapter 15 and it just gets better and better. The feels in the starting chapters was great but the last few chapters have been amazing with it. I can already see the ending making me almost cry.
The story begins with a character who writes a novel thinking about submitting it but does no do so. But one of her classmates finds the novel by accident and reads ... Nov 20, 2023
Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata, it's great.
I always find myself baffled when Yuri manga tend to take a realistic approach, mainly because of the fact that it's so rare to see that these days. Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata shows the other side of the road in Yuri. What happens when the couple doesn't get their happy ending? What happens when the person you've found slowly begins fading away right before your eyes? These are the types of topics this manga graduates towards. It’s a bittersweet love story taking place over the summer. Heavy topics aside, the characters in this manga are also extremely likable, and frankly, just ... Jul 3, 2024
Since I met you all the gloomy days just seem to shine a little more brightly
Reading this minuscule manga only 32 chapters in length resembles the fleeting summer it encompasses; It's over in a blink of an eye and I miss every second of it. Shizuku Hoshikawa a reclusive existence so riddled by excessive regret she questions every breath she takes. Can I forgive myself? Do I deserve to be alive? If I disappeared right now would anyone notice? In a twist of fate she meets Asaka Kaori, and gets her long awaited answers. Slowly but surely Shizuku's bleak life starts to be bathed in ... I honestly didn't expect much coming into this, but after finishing it, my god. It was simply beautiful. I've read only a few other romance manga, but this had such a powerful story that I adored reading, and had great themes of love, how far you're willing to go for it, and how you spend your limited time with your loved ones. Shizuku and Kaori's relationship is perfectly crafted for this story, and the inevitability of it elevates the story and themes even more. Their flaws both being accepted by one another, bringing them closer together is a sight to behold. An incredibly sad, yet

Oh my, this series is almost too sweet for its own good. I won’t spoil anything, but by the time I finished, I was absolutely devastated. The sheer sadness of it all really hit me—the story is incredibly captivating and emotionally gripping.
The main characters complement each other beautifully, making their connection feel genuine and heartfelt. The romance isn’t really there, but it’s not needed in this story—it still manages to be incredibly touching without it. The art is stunning and the cover of volume 1 is one of my favourites. Big recommend, but consider yourself warned: you might shed a few tears... Oct 26, 2022
Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata is a sweet but painful Yuri story by Yuama, I've also loved her previous work Ikemensugi desu Shiki-senpai!. Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata (The Summer You Were There), Yuama's latest series, travels a far more difficult route than her prior work, The Girl I Want Is So Handsome, with more complex characters and darker topics.
I'm writing this review after finishing the most recent chapter, and to be honest, I never expected the plot to turn out this way. Shizuku Hoshigawa, a high school student and novelist, is a shy person who tends to keep to herself, She goes to trash her manuscript after ... Jan 21, 2024
I am not a critic. I have not read enough manga to have the experience of truly “reviewing” one. However, it is my sole and humble belief that this manga is a must-read. It talks about dark themes that may or may not resonate with you. The characters and their stories are rich and saturated. You will watch as they change right before your very eyes.
The resolution, as cliche as it was, does grip at your heart and leave you with a heavier one at that. But the messages in the manga will force you to move forward anyway. Please read this manga. Nov 18, 2024
Nearly cried reading the English title and the first pages alone. Cried for like 30 minutes after reading the whole thing. 10/10.
Really well-written with like, a lot of memorable lines and moments, and just a really deep and like beautiful story all and all. Plus, the art style is just gorgeous. It's kind of like a typical friends-to-lovers "they kiss/confess and it ends," kind of plot, but if you replace the ending you know is going to happen with "yeah we're basically told one of the mains is going to die tragically." Go in expecting them to get together, it'll still be cute. Go ... Dec 15, 2024
I saw the writting on the wall before I even clicked the first chapter: Psycological, Medical & Tragedy tags. I steeled my resolve again when the translator's name was an Oyasumi Punpun reference. This would be a rough one.
This fragile romance between Shizuku and Kaori is slowly build and expanded upon, with supporting characters from the girls sisters to old aquitances helping to move the pieces into place. This is a nicely crafted narrative, well drawn and with great character. It does hold some emotional impact which is always great. I rated this in the high end of 7/10, as it is simply too short.
