Recommendations

both deal with the anxieties of growing up, finding purpose, and feeling lost, like a wooden plank adrift in the ocean. i see myself in both these titles. argh it hurts

I saw that someone already made this recommendation, so I might as well try one myself. The similarities between these stories begin and end with a main character dealing with the oppressive feelings of depression and anxiety... But I'd still recommend both of these simply because of the transformative power they had over me, Punpun with his self-destructive, ever escalating narrative and Izumi with her quite and heartbreaking breakdowns. I hope that, if you're going through some rough patch in your life, these stories can provide a bit of comfort, however small that may be.

Both manga focuses on the daily life of the MC who is experiencing depression, showcasing its negative influence, and providing indirect hints to overcome it, not only through the means of external intervention by other characters, but also through their inner monologues of feelings of anxiety, regrets and epiphanies.

Both feature women who have mental illnesses (or hint at women that have mental illnesses, whether they be anxiety or depression) that somehow try to experience life. Both also do feature continuous suffering, though WataMote is more of a dark comedy. Both do experience some progress in their lives - making new friends, exploring new hobbies, and that sort of thing, though WataMote involves more, long-standing progress and Nande Iketeru involves small hints of it throughout, since it is shorter.

The duos of girls are pretty similar, one is a short-haired, energetic, and cheerful sweetie with big boobs (Hana & Kanade), while the other one has long hair, is anxious, and has a worried/frightened expression most of the time (Miko & Izumi).
