Motoko is now working under Aramaki. Again, it's a little hard getting used to Motoko's looks for the Arise series but it is still fitting.

That total annihilation by Batou at the end though~

Damn, what an intense beginning.

Seems like there's a pro hacker on the loose. Aww, no decent weapons on you Major? ;.;
Quite an unique movie. The OST is brilliant with solid action on the road. I wasn't too into the fighting scenes but the way Mokoto deals with her adversaries had my eyes glued to the screen.

8/10 overall. Dat revelation at the end. Geez, trying to act like a human as a cyborg.

? I don't understand this. The ending scene sees him in his cell with no sign of his destruction. He was given a choice by Mokoto though.

That was good stuff. Everything is more beautiful than in the first movie. The city backgrounds for example were gorgeous, and there were a lot more of them. A lot more action too with an eventful car chase and the logicoma doing its spider thing. Character wise, it was funny how they made Saitou a guy ready to work for the highest bidder. This is one good thing about reboots, other sides of characters get to be explored. Still wonder how he survived the chopper crash btw. The voice actors are still doing a great job.

I was a bit disappointed by how simple the plot was. In a way it was also pretty convenient to have the major fight against her future allies instead of someone new, but since we only have four medium length movies I guess it can't be helped. I just hope the sequels will have more complex/original writing. In the preview it looks like the next movie will be Motoko centric, so that might be the case.

I love the animation... wish they had that a decade ago with the TV series.

I liked this one more than the first movie. Though I'm feeling that the action was a wee bit much. Missing the complex writing... hopefully that develops though.

Overall, pretty enjoyable.

Kinda silly this would have to be split as movies, when they're more of OVAs , like Hellsing Ultimate. Anyways...Togusa is finally in the next episode!

8/10 for me on this, simply because it'll always get a -2 for the lackluster character designs that keep it from being perfect, in the last ep, this ep, and all the remaining 2 eps, and even the manga adaption.

Also agree that it was much better than the first OVA
Much more focused and overall sleeker in its style and presentation

I particularly liked the shots of Motoko and VV talking over the Net along with the reveal of Soga's memories being falsified

Way better, Logicoma and the Major in 3DMG stroll ^^

So, first, another trusted high ranking officer has been cyberbugged, along with members of his team.
Then, VeeVee, a neurochip, got incentive from an external source and ended up in a search for raison d'etre, and stuffed itself in a cyber body. It may be connected to the "firestarter" in episode 1, and perhaps continue to shape out as the second story line.

Actually, it was very interesting to see Section 9 against Section 9.

The Major is still off of what I know and how I like to see her (<-yeah, "I know"), but perhaps there's more to her development in the next movies. Will wait ^_^

I still can't stand the character designs and they use too much cg. And the pacing is too fast, even by GITS standards (which is pretty fast). Also they don't go in any philosophical questions even though we're already halfway through this series now.

But, I do like that in this version we see how the Major forms her team.
Otherwise, I'm pretty sure this series will end up being just a little added bonus to the franchise and nothing else, unfortunately..

Screw Spiderman. Tachikoma do it better.

YES, this really had the Ghost in the Shell spirit and the Major really felt like old times. Quite a lot better than the first movie.
The story seems like a different variation of the puppeteer we saw in the manga and in the first movie in already two different variations but this included the team building along with it. It was an interesting take but not up to the movie certainly.

Also i noticed the artwork seemed improved. The major appearance isn't a problem for me, she's still quite nice looking, it's the others that look more like cartoons of their previous designs.

Although the plot does feels like we're retreading old grounds, this was a great step forward from the first film. I'm not sure if i'm content with 'berserk AI was behind everything', but I suppose they have to feed in a connecting plot-line somewhere.

Perhaps 3 will be able to take up the remaining best bits of the franchise while bringing us something gloriously new.

The term "ghost" in the Ghost in the Shell universe is used as a description of something like a soul. Since many humans live inside cyborg bodies and even the brain has been closed in metal shell and altered with cybernetic parts they identify their humanity by the term "having a ghost". I guess the explains the "Ghost in the Shell" title the series has.
That woman was an AI that put itself inside a cyborg body but the AI believed to be alive and self-conscious as a human and that it managed to achieve a birth of a ghost. She was searching for what gave it the ability to become self-conscious. In a way it's like a child looking for it's parents.

Does anyone know how long back this was from SAC and 2nd gig? Actually, is it even set in the same universe?

Motoko feels a bit too young-ish to me, or maybe it's just the character design..
There's two kinds of people you can't win an argument against:
One - Too dumb to tell right from wrong.
Two - Too stubborn to admit they are wrong.

This is an origin story of the Major with Section 9. So it's before both as far as the tv series' are concerned.

_

I did enjoy this episode more than the first one. I get the feeling Arise will keep getting better with each installment.

"A rogue AI did it all"...okay it's always a rogue AI anyway, or a Ghost. >_< Come to think of it that rogue AI physical appearance and right down to her "Ghost" suit, reminds me of Nova, the Dominion Ghost in Starcraft 2. XD

In the process of still assembling the squad, the only one still missing is Togusa. Paz volunteered since he's just waiting for Motoko anyway while the Major just blackmailed Saito to joining her team. Unfortunately Saito's a f**king merc, he turned when he got a higher bid for his services and he needed further convincing after that! LOL Borma, Ishikawa and Batou opted-in.

She used the logicoma to sling her way between buildings across the city like Spiderman to overcome the traffic, no spider senses there though only logicoma sensors.

There's an advice somewhere around here to GitS fans to treat this as an alternate retelling but seeing the Major is still assembling her team, I see it as a prequel, difference in character designs notwithstanding.

You can't see this as a prequel because it contradicts the characters backdrops in SAC. It's another retelling.

the beginning was very good, but the anime went downhill from there on. Besides the amazing art the movie had clichee character interaction, logical mistakes when compared to the tv-series, stupid and illogic points in the story and some unrealistic action scenes.

I'm glad they decided to steal the hook from "Juke Joint Jezebel." That definitely made it feel like old times. I used to listen to that song back when I first saw Ghost in the Shell.

Ummm.... did they bother to get permission, or is this just another case of "Japan's laws allow it, so we're going to grab it"?

I didn't hear a direct use of it. If you are talking about the beat used in some of the action scenes, then yeah it's similar, but different enough not to be a problem.

I feel like this was much better than Ghost Tears. Sure, I'm still having issues getting used to the Major's look and Batou having green eyes but, all in all it was well done. I don't know what it is but, cyber punk anything is an auto-win for me.

On a side note though, it seems like people are kinda jumping the gun on this series. I really do think it will only get better and to be fair, I think the whole concept of GITS is complicated enough for the average person. Once you start mixinging the philosophical elements of the original a lot of people seem to be turned away and its unfortunate because GITS is great!

I like this reboot for what it is; its a fast paced action ride and yet still manages to keep its more slow paced "sit and ponder about the whole meaning of everything" feel.

Didn't like it. The first one felt more GiTS-y than this one did. This almost felt like it was partially inspired by Micheal Bay; explosions and bullets everywhere.

-Too much slow mo
-Too much CG
-Maybe too much action
-Animation worse than the first border
-Not a single ounce of philosophy
-Has NOTHING to do with ghosts/AI other than the ending, which just BARELY counts
-OP was still shit
-ED was even shittier and out-of-place as the OP
-The OST was flare-less and total crap compared to the works of the original movies and Yoko Kanno's works
-None of the section 9 team is likable. Aramaki is still the same, Motoko is totally empty as a character, Batou is an unlikable asshole, Paz is.... where the fuck did that guy come from?, Borma is empty as usual with no back story at all, Saito was a back-stabbing money-hungry piece of shit, and Togusa wasn't even in this episode.

The bad guy was more interesting than the whole section 9 team combined! Fuck this border. The first one was way better.

This was painful to watch. Everything I said about Ghost Pain still stands, if not more so. This is not Ghost in the Shell. It's not even true cyberpunk.

And since people are still confused, again from the Ghost Pain thread:
Wind_Falcon said:
Every GitS iteration is "standalone". Masamune Shirow's manga, Oshii's movies and Kamiyama Kenji's SAC are all different "universes" so to speak. SAC's timeline is a would be timeline if Motoko never met the Puppet master (and even then there are inconsistencies with the Major's past).

Arise is the same way, its a would be scenario of a younger cast. If you remember in all previous iterations there is established backstory for all the characters and Section 9, in every iteration different, and Arise has already contradicted all of that.

PS. It's strange to see I'm the only one from 97 people that scored this first OVA as "1 out of 5: Hated it". Can't believe any fan can think of Arise as anything but a cash-in garbage made by people that have virtually no understanding of what is and makes GitS a masterpiece in cyberpunk.

This is a different animal completely to SAC but I'm slowly getting into the different vibe. It's a lot more action oriented and has less detective work to it, but
Maybe that changes when Togusa and his mullet make their entry into the team.

It's been quite a while since I've watched the first OVA, so could anyone care to enlighten me with a few things?

In the first OVA, Motoko was hacked/had a virus, which is why she couldn't see the bomb-girl and why she was also doing other shit. She wasn't in Section 9 yet, was she? I'm browsing through right now, and at the end, Aramaki wants to recruit her, but she refuses.

In the second OVA, after the checking of the red Logicoma around 5 minutes in, she mentions something about her squad, which Aramaki offered to her in the first OVA. Is she part of Section 9 now (or was she ever in Section 9 already?) What squad is this? Is this the same squad with Batou and the rest of the guys? How come they were attacking her (or is it just because all of them were infected with the virus, which is why Motoko was giving the makeshift vaccine to everyone?)? How come Motoko was recruiting Batou at the end? What was that money Batou received which he used to bribe Saito with?

I'm really scatterbrained. This is the problem with OVAs. There's no time to explain everything, or at least most of the matters.

Fuck shit.

Either that, or I just wasn't paying attention clearly.

And that slow-mo was fucking retardedly unnecessary.

Full action movie with somewhat cancerous CGI that really stands out during action scenes, and pretty low quality visuals in general. He destroyed the AI that was now in control by Soga. I think it was the right thing to do. Soga had artificial memories about WW3 placed in him. I would probably do the same thing to make the world know about the truth. Sadly with the power government and corporations now have in this future world and the heavy use of artificial parts, truths are what other people say they are.

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn was a 10/10 Major and this one could not live up. Ended up going back to subs. Sakamoto's not bad, but Tanaka will always be better.

Anyways, this was actually pretty boring, which upset me as GITS has never bored me before.
