is it just my imagination or would that alien have had to have been in the fetal position in order to fit into that ball? ;)

Gotta love the hilariously cliche way the next episode's name's announcement sounds.

Holy shit. That was some awesome action right there. Putting a ton of modern anime to shame.

Great carefree humour, direction and music. Macross will head for a 10 if it keeps it up.

That idiot Hikaru just trashed her house and she hardly even noticed... same could be said about the city population in general, some super advanced aliens came in force to kick our asses, so no big deal, we can calmly evacuate to the shelters and its all good... why panic? I mean its just a war right?

It was hilarious how Hikaru and the girl was joking around after she almost died and there were blasting and explosions all around xD
But I like that Hikaru has a hard time piloting the robot for the first time.~

I'd say they were all in shock.

For some reason, I was expecting a rather childish anime since this is the oldest one I've ever watched, but it's been amazing and very interesting so far. It seems very mature as well.

I'm really impressed by how this series is taking things. Hikaru hasn't flown anything like this before, and like the first episode, it still clearly shows. The mid-air catch had to be the coolest part.

Wow.
It was somewhat confusing as to the state of battle. Action parts are intense and the most is fall and catch - awesome (even if pushing it)
Macross losing it's floating engines - hilarious. I guess this is not the last thing that can (and will) go wrong with it.
I wish it had modern graphics like it's Zero part, but even so it is quite good technically. They make a lot of interesting frames here.

I'm not feeling Hikaru's voice, the other VAs sound so much better than him. Other than that I'm enjoying the series and the freefall catch was really fluid for the time it was made.

A couple of things to remember about the background to the anime. With the crash landing of a humongous alien space battleship on earth and the realization that humanity had to prepare for the likelihood of involvement in interstellar conflict at any moment, Macross City has been formed largely to support the repair effort and the creation of Earth's defense forces. It's no accident that there are shelters ready to take the entire population of the city on short notice. This is a military base, and the "civilians" have probably been expecting something like this to happen. The planet has also gone through some vicious wars of unification, as some nations and leaders needed to brought in line in order to present a united front.

The anime is doing a pretty good job at covering the action, and I hope we can get all of the plot from the original story in.

And damn, now I wish I hadn't sold those novels when my bookcases got filled...

The way Hikaru saved Minmay was like some Eureka 7 stuff which is cool.

The action scenes were fun to watch.

I don't really find the humor to be funny.

I'll stick with this though since this series has lasted so long.

So epic, so 80's. That and the hokey ending credits are almost better than the show itself.

That said, two episodes in this shows quite a bit of promise. I'm starting to see why this is so well regarded already. I'll put aside that that mid-air rescue was totally unrealistic and that it seems unlikely that a giant ass space ship would be able to take off in a matter of hours (...minutes?) after sustaining serious damage that literally ripped at least a dozen or so odd holes in the hull.

Hikaru's naivete is very refreshing and the fact that he has such an emotional reaction to the loss of life presented in this episode is seriously worth applauding. Very rare to see that in any media, let alone anime.

The hair dialogue was terrible, dear god.
Again, more suspension of disbelief. At the very least, it looks like she did finally pass out after ramming into the alien mech, but I'm surprised she didn't smash into his seat since she never put on a seatbelt.
Getting into the fighter/mech itself was something out a BF3 game, holy shit.
At the very least, the lasers/explosion effects here are great.

I know this is really early into the mech genre, but couldn't the aliens have invented land based mechs that looked better than hopping ostriches?

Minmay doesn't seem to mind the fact that a giant robot smashed her home, and the fact that she had a couple of near-death experiences since. That cut of animation with her boarding the plane was quite nice. My heart kinda lept when that dude that got killed in the end was actually a giant. Thought at 1st I was just seeing some weird perspective shot that made him look that big.

The reactions the characters in this anime have to destruction, violence and near death are very unrealistic, but I guess it's meant to keep things light-hearted. That hair vs life dialogue was pretty cringe.

With that said, I'm still enjoying it.

That mid-air catch was an iconic moment, a symbol of love like the upside down Spiderman kiss. That and the uncanny valley giant alien, somehow incredibly eerie, made the episode for me.

Hikaru has one of the worst voice acting I've heard in any anime. The guy speaks and shouts with the same intensity and volume (except for that last scream, before he starts shooting). Not to mention, most of the lines are delivered pretty monotonously. He's making me want to switch to the English dub.

And yeah, it's pretty ridiculousness how all the characters are so calm about their city and homes being destroyed by fucking aliens right before their eyes. Even if they are used to wars by now, you'd expect them to show at least some reaction.

Yeah the acting is bad. I don't remember the dub's being better over all though. It was kind of funny when the gravity controls just ripped themselves out of the ship, and they were all like "I guess that's what we get for doing a patch job".

I was legit shocked when a fucking giant came out of what I thought was an unmanned (or unalienned in this case?) mech. Not only is it not a mech, it turns out it's a fucking power suit for aliens.
Also action in this anime is really good.

"Battroids were built to fight these giants" - but wasn't their existence unknown to the Earthnoids? And how did these giants fit into such small machines anyway?

Focker and Hikaru are both dumb in a good and funny way.

--------------------

@Rei_III Probably plausible explanation, but the ship belongs to another faction of aliens, iirc. Maybe they're not giants, unlike the Zentradi? I don't know yet.
I'm fine with somewhat clunky proportions here and there, I can make an exception for such an old show, and it looks good in general anyway. Looking up to DYRL though, it has a very good reputation. The sequel (Macross Plus) also seems to have a movie version, and I'm yet again puzzled about whether to watch it or the OVA later (or maybe both because apparently they have different footage or something).

@St0rmblade Wasn't it a case of "the Macross proved there were giant beings out there" ?
There are many drawings or proportion failures in this TV show, the apparent size of the Zentraedi's suits is one of them. (Don't worry though, most things are fixed wwith the film)

St0rmblade said:

Yeaaah... this was dropped by the film too, not a surprise seeing how this was (not) handled /adressed by the TV show. The problem of improvisation, I guess? (not everyone can be Anno ;) )

DYRL is probably the best "let's do it again, but for the cinema" anime I ever saw (or that was ever made, though I should see F and its movies before). It's incredibly, stunningly beautiful and as smooth as any theater release should be (or in today's youth vocabulary "ugly" with "ugly-looking characters" and "bad animation", actual quotes). Even in the TV show, I was at certain points in awe, probably because those pictures were drawn by Mikimoto. The envisioned final episode (26or27) looks incredible.

I've seen both Plus montages, the film is first and foremost a compilation one unlike DYRL. I'm not sure anymore of what the (minor) variations are, something related to the order they choose to show some things in and a few other tweaks (plus one "major" scene added, nothing important story wise but a nice spectacle). I probably have put a remark about the interest of each version in my usual discussion short texts. (sorry, it looks like shameless self-promotion)

Be warned: Macross and Gundam have little in common in their working. They are different in the way they make and use their so-called compilation movies, and they're different in the way they exploit their universe. For example: Plus simply uses the universe as a landscape where to tell its own story and has little interest in expanding Macross or connecting to it (beyond being set a certain time later, thus using the same species). I'm not sure but I don't even think the project was envisioned as a Macross series at first.
(I dislike it but it's pretty nice, features top action and animations and has this popular 90s design style Kawamoto and Sonoda helped to form)

PS: Mikimoto started to draw his own retelling of the original Macross. It's not prgressing much and will probably never see completion, it also has a visual drawback: Haruhiko Mikimoto uses his current style that has very little to do with his 80s/90s one. (it's very pretty but it was nonetheless jarring to me).
Still interesting.
