Look I'm late to this party. But watching this I've been enjoying it. But I can't help to think that the whole "Social Anxiety" thing was just done way better in watamote. Atleast the comedy side to it. Where they use many diffrent scenarios and situations to exemplify this weird and awkward nature that makes her Tomoko. Also the fact that she isn't some 1 dimensional character (unlike bocchi unfortunately) that can use that to her advantage to create many jokes about social anxiety situations. And I'm not even saying slapstick comedy is a bad thing I personally don't really mind it and rather enjoy it quite often But I just see what bocchi the rock was going for here and it seems like it was done better in Watamote.

And Also Girls band cry just being a holistically better Band anime entirely than bocchi. The pacing and soundtracks alone don't stand a chance against GBC so far from what I've seen (On ep 7 currently). And not to mention GBC and it's more realistic way of writing the characters and you know ACTUALLY HAVE INTERESTING DIALOGUE WITH EACHOTHER?? I've genuinely seen all of her friends be only support figures for bocchi rather than actually characters of there own as far as right now. And yes I know it may happen on these last few episodes of the anime but GBC could establish this in the first few episodes alone.

Didn't mean to make this a review but genuinely wondering how this was such a zeitgeist when the comedy they were going for was done a whole lot better in watamote and As a CGDCT band anime, Girls band cry did it alot better too. I am still enjoying it tho but just felt I had to express this concern.

Im pretty sure nowadays pretty much every aspect of an anime has been done before
Whether its done better or worse (especially in comedy) usually is very subjective

Why not watch Watamote instead? Watamote is a comedy that is missing the music aspect
Why not watch Girls Band Cry instead? GBC is a music drama that is not focussing on the comedy aspect
combine both and you get Bocchi The Rock, apparently people want comedy + music thats why theyre watching this show, its not that hard to figure out

I've listened to hundreds of hours of music of these recent girls band and I would say I prefer kessoku band over GBC in the long run.
MyGo >= kessoku band > TogenashiTogeari >= Diamond Dust (their Cycle of Sorrow is so much better imo)

I also prefer BtR over GBC, the comedic aspect really works well and the characters are more appealing imo (Nina is considered annoying by many and Rupa and Tomo almost didn't have any development).

Watamote is a bit too weird for me as Tomoko looks like she has mental disorder related to her social anxiety.

Girls Band Cry is 3D unfortunately which is something I'm not in the mood for at the moment.

As a Watamote Fan, for me

Watamote = Social anxiety + NEET + Antisocial

Bocchi = Social anxiety

You can see this with how Tomoko literally hate and badmouthing her classmate while Bocchi is mostly neutral with everyone

and Watamote comedy is really extreme and exaggerated that I don't think many people can relate to it while Bocchi's joke is really relatable for everyone

Watamote = Laugh because how stupid and extreme the joke is

Bocchi = Laugh because " Hey I experienced that"

Watamote just hurts to watch. Not because of any relatability, but because Tomoko really represents a person you don't want to have near you.
Her depiction is just not realistic and the comedy is unfun... it is one of those manganime where I only experienced a bit of it and then skipped from scoring it all together.
Does she get better later on? Well, that's too bad, it took too long.

I'm still watching Girls Band Cry. Now that one I'm enjoying a lot, but I haven't watched enough to get a full opinion.
Still, I've watched enough to be able to tell that it's kinda pointless to compare it to Bocchi. The tone and feel of both are too different to make any meaningful comparisons. Kinda like comparing K-On to Bocchi... I mean, what's the point in comparing two anime that are only similar in the most superficial of ways?
Bocchi focuses a lot more on the comedy, GBC leans far more into the drama (from what I can tell so far). Both go for character development but from different approaches. You can just enjoy enjoy them both, if you can enjoy both bands of course.

Bocchi is meant to be a light hearted cute series about a bocchi who is socially awkward. Watamote is about a girl trying to be popular with guys. Never seen gbc but it is probably not aiming for the same plot as bocchi.

She is tho as for what I'm seeing rn. Her personality trait is just social anxiety which is fine if you like that but tomoko to me is just alot more complex. While u can also argue tomokos personality is just "wanting to be popular" but there are more nuances in how technically she can go abt that rather than having her one goal be her only personality

Mhm exactly yea which is understandable. But more so shows that tomoko is way more of a complex character than bocchi due to this fact of ppl not being able to relate to her (when in all honesty I've related to tomoko more than bocchi ngl). It's the rhetorics and remarks she makes to others and how she goes abt situations head first rather than being the worried scared version overthinking stuff (which I'll give is prolly more realistic) that is bocchi. Which is personally what makes watamote better to me even tho she's fails like 100% of the time which imo the absured comedy just works in that favor BUT I do understand bocchi is a CGDCT band anime and watamotes like style of an anime would not work in that setting

so what you are trying to do is discuss subjective aspects as if they are objective, im confused, you mention comedy and music which are highly subjective. For example i watch girls band cry and i personally prefer bocchis songs, to the point that i still listen to them, and i havent watched watamote to say which one i think is funnier, i did find bocchi to be quite funny...

I think it's more subjective tbh when it comes to comedy that's understandable. I just think watamote crafts more interesting jokes at attempt for comedy for those who enjoy that cringe type of comedy. But honestly with her being near you I honestly would see Bocchi as someone who is just "damsel in distress" type of girl. Like "Woah my life is so hard talking and socializing is hard but I have a whole support group and stable family and living condition currently" idk man rather than someone like tomoko that has none of that and litrally has to build herself from the ground up. Alot more approachable and humbling to me personally to be alongside tomoko than bocchi.

And for GBC again comedy is subjective but the comedy still is not used in the exaggerated tone you normally see with bocchi tho. Bocchi has one joke and does it very well, While GBC again like watamote, Has jokes with diffrent scenarios and situations and aren't just based off of a girls own personal issues for laughs.

but I do get what you mean honestly you can watch any of the animes I just included that to make my agruement sound better

Yea pretty much. I mean this is what discussion is all abt tbh. Reading through this thread I've seen some decent points like tomoko just someone wanting to be popular and how that can be a 1 dimensional element to her and honestly they had a point. It's all conversation man don't think to deep abt it not alot of things are objective gang

i like both watamote and bocchi but the cringe comedy in watamote fell flat on me a lot and sometimes made me have to turn away lmao

as far as bocchi goes the cringe comedy is elevated by clever animation imo, like bocchi being put in blender and thrown through bricks. it also has good music which is a plus (have never seen gbc so can't comment on it)

I can say that bocchi has it with its wild animation in what make the jokes land for me to find them funny in which is what watamote doesn't have at all lol. It's just when you look beyond AT the jokes it's making it goes to show its all just Social Anxiety jokes and "thats so me" jokes. Which ig im finding a bit stale for me but still enjoyable enough to keep watching. As For watamotes comedy it's innovative with its absurd and horrible scenarios that come off as morbidly funny to me. Which constantly has u well morbidly curious in wtv antics she gets herself into and how she goes abt situations and not needing excessive animation for a punch line.

Honestly tho if were going by animation making something funny tho asobi asobe is prolly the best at that (definitely recommend 😎). As u said tho both are good and I can see that 100%

Everything you said there is valid, so why the childish butthurt crap? I disagreed with the narrowness of your suggestion to choose only 1 of the suggestions without saying your opinions were wrong. Also your putdowns of BTR seemed unnecessary. Of course I already saw Watamote when it aired so I can’t watch GBC instead and even if it were so, I’d still watch both and definitely not miss Bocchi because it was brilliant. I just don’t see why these things need ranking when they are all top quality anime. BTW also try the recent Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night. It’s right up there too.

if we're comparing anime to anime (which im doing because I have never read the source material for either), I think bocchi is far superior to watamote and it's not even close.

bocchi has a much better story and much better character development in general. watamote had funny moments, but a lot of it was just a cringey mess.
