ok ngl rage bait title

i see a lot of people seem to have enjoyed episode 1, trying to figure out if i am missing something or get y'alls thoughts on why you liked it. comedically, it sort of feels like nichijou which is a show i really enjoyed. however, this one feels meaningless compared to nichijou. it honestly feels like the "rawr im so random xd" girl from middle school grew up and wrote an anime.

i feel like nichijou, in all its wacky randomness and fun, drives home the idea of finding all the beautiful things in everyday moments which is why it works so well even when half of the jokes are lost in translation.

so am i missing something here? planning on watching a couple more episodes at least

You wont enjoy every anime, everyone has a different sense of humor, you cant force yourself to enjoy something. I for one really enjoyed the first two episodes.

Nichijou was far more "random" than this. Shikanoko tries to advance the plot with each episode, whereas Nichijou is more like a sitcom, showing random, clever gags and advances the plot very little every couple of episodes.

In reality, it's just your thinking that's swapped

was this really your impression after watching episode 1 of Nichijou? If you really want to compare the two, you should consider letting the series finish. You also probably just enjoyed anime more back then, If Nichijou aired today you would have the same complaints lol

It’s only 1 episode, and I already expect to see the theme of accepting yourself, could be wrong but again it’s only 1 episode. I personally enjoyed it

Purpose is the same with both. Entertain, be random, be funny. So far, so good!

SO FAR, Shikanoko and Nichijou are more dissimilar than similar, with randomness in comedy being their only shared trait (and probably the deer thingy).

because this one IS characteristically meaningless. The more you try to reason this show (i.e. what Torako is doing in-anime) the more you'll lose the fun part of it. Nichijou was a sitcom. You were able to find a general meaning because it used fairly relatable scenarios and exaggerated them to build the comedy. And this, by no means, is the theme of Shikanoko.

At the end comedy is subjective. You're not missing anything.

I didn't find Nichijou very funny. I enjoy this more. The purpose of a comedy is to elicit laughter. There's your purpose.

Kinda disagree.

The reason we liked Nichijou is cause it's a good time, no?
Im not too sure if "beautiful moments" is what makes Nichijou popular. For me, it's not that deep. It was funny. I looked amazing and it was lighthearted fun, every Episode. That's why I enjoyed it. It wasn't about deep thinking and everyday life lessons.

My Deer Friend Nokotan is pretty wacky. That would be fine, but it's just not that funny.
Has nothing to do with purpose, for me. I would like it, if it would make me laugh, regardless of the messages conveyed or "ideas" beeing put forward.

This show is such dumb fun, part of me hates it but I'm loling too hard to stop watching. There is a place for dumb fun and it's long overdue for something like this.

I had a straight face the entirety of these past two episodes. It’s not even remotely funny, and i’m really not a difficult one to elicit laughter out of.

I thought Nichijou felt exactly like that. Having a very basic theme/message attached didn’t make it actually funny.

Anyway, I don’t think the two shows have much significant in common. They’re both absurdist SoL, moeblob comedies, and that’s it.

Everyone was forcefully trying to lump it up with nichijou and now when they saw its not completely like nichijou they're disappointed.

It's your own fault.

It doesn't have to be as good as nichijou. People are acting like if it's not on the same level as nichijou it's trash.
Nichijou isn't the greatest masterpiece either. It wasn't always funny. Just 30% of it was. Those are the clips you see again and again and think that every part of nichijou was funny.
If you think of this anime as a complete different entity and stop all the comparisons it'd be easier to enjoy it.

Also, why the fuck purpose is even necessary? It's a dumb comedy and let it be a dumb comedy. Nichijou too was just a dumb comedy. It didn't have any purpose. It's just the jokes were a lot better and characters were more likable. That's why it was more enjoyable.

I think the reason Nichijou is an all time classic is because it's so relatable. Underneath the wacky randomness of the humor is something human and relatable, just don't feel like this one has it so far

@Neterosan The part of episode 1 where one of the characters drops the sausage from her lunchbox resonated with me because those kinds of things happened to me as a kid and still happen to me as an adult, but when you're a kid i think it feels like how nichijou represents it, so the comedy evokes how the world felt as a child. episode 1 of this show doesnt evoke anything from me, i think it lacks the emotional core that nichijou has

I don't know about you guys but I don't necessarily need a comedy to have a hidden meaning behind it all to enjoy it. My favorite all-time comedies are Saiki-K and Tonari no Seki-kun, neither of which have any rhyme or reason to their situational comedy.

Nichijou was a wholesome surreal CGDCT. Nokotan is more like a psychedelic trip that the author wrote during the fever between writing the next yuri.

I mean Nichijou only ever had purpose once every few segments and then fucked off to do another gag, feels way sparser there then here.

I feel like that's a pretty fair assessment actually. Nichijou definitely had a lot more general gag humor. This anime is totally about "braindead" humor, a lot of situational irony, where stuff just randomly happens contrary to what would be conventionally expected. There also seems to be a lot of obscure pop culture references along with a lot of trope-style satire, many of which aren't really made explicitly obvious, or maybe just not expressed well enough in a comedic way. Already after 2 episodes I feel this show has actually more plot drive than Nichijou did.

I'm personally enjoying it so far, but I agree the humor doesn't have the same quality nor is it as universal as Nichijou's.

In my opinion, comparing anime will just ruin the enjoyment. An anime doesn't have to be similar to another one to be good.

they both fall in the same category of "cute girls doing random things" to me. nichijou only has the advantage of being released during a time where anime hasnt become as mainstream and oversaturated as it is now and thus ppl have fonder memories and stronger bias for it

Not a fan of the Deer anime but it's not like Nichijou had a explicit 'purpose', it was as random and terrible humor-wise as this in some ways for me. Nothing deep about its messaging whatsoever to take it that serious lol.

To me it feels very similar to Nichijou, though more focused on the "weird girl". In Nichijou we had the robot girl, this time we have a deer girl.
I enjoy both shows, but I could totally see someone not enjoying that kind of humor.

I love Nichijou to death and it's my favorite comedy, but I don't think it has a purpose. Also 3 episodes in and this anime is pretty damn funny. I guess the randomness and absurdity of it are what appeal to me.
