People: We have a new season of Yowamushi Pedal!
Me: We have it - the home version, with an all-female cast.

This show is Japanese conglomerate Mixi's mixed-media project, which focuses all about Women's Keirin a.k.a cycling (which is a real Olympic event and something the Japanese ARE really good at), this featuring an all-female-cast where it all starts from Izumi Ito: the daughter of the owner of an onsen inn establishment.

The group of girls all hailing from the same online group supporting their players, there're other athletes as well to keep the culture alive through generations, and pressure is rather high to keep the races going. And this is felt by Izumi and her friends feeling the heat, who wants to try out cycling on their own, plus one of the girls experienced in the sport.

A year's headstart for the girls to become potential cyclists despite their rather different dreams, it's a long way, and this is their goal, at least for izumi who joined the girls on a whim, and still is undecided about her future. However, she decides to give Keirin cycling a try, as a way to motivate for a goal-setting objective, not just being FOMO.

To start with fanservice is just...weird, but "original" shows like these must start somewhere.

I'm a big fan of both Long Riders! and Minami Kamakura Koukou Joshi Jitensha-bu, so it's great to see more girls on bicycles.

Nice start. I really like the OP.

And we didn't have to wait too long for the hot spring episode. :P

So far, I have no complaints. The animation looks decent enough as well.

Pretty accurate ngl, I mean cycling is a very competitive sport over here in Japan, no matter the gender. Don’t know if that was thanks to the war, but whatever.

A solid pilot episode. We don’t get much cycling anime, so it’s nice to have one. I don’t usually have much faith when it comes to originals, or mixed media whatever these things are, but when it comes to original sports anime, Japan likes to snap, so I have faith.

Will Izumi be a professional cyclist in the end? Yes, she will
btw, The surnames of characters from this series came from the actual location of cycling tracks from all over Japan. For example, Itou Izumi came from Itou Onsen Keirin, Kumamoto Ai came from Kumamoto Keirin

I had low expectations of this and now i watched it feeling like it's very average nothing stood out on the other hand it wasn't terrible either.
So i will just watch and see what this will bring us.
We had some much character introductions this episode that it's hard to judge them.

Hmm, good start. Fine episode.

Let's see how the story develops from here.
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

From the studio that adapted the GOAT of bicycle racing anime(yeah the competition is crazy I know) we get a completely different approach here. Unfortunately, not really sold on this one. Guess I will give it another episode or two before I decide whether it's worth finishing or not.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

CG is rough to say the least, not much animation going on.

I've never seen Yowamushi Pedal but I did catch Long Riders, the latter wasn't good so hopefully this is better.

I picked this one because in the past I have picked shows focusing on unique themes that I really enjoyed, three that come to mind is “Sports Climbing Girls” which was a wall climbing anime from Fall 2020, “Ippon Again” which was a judo anime from Winter 2023 and “The Way of Pon” from this recent winter season which was about mahjong, and upon seeing this one I figured it might be interesting to check out a bicycle racing anime, and this wasn’t a bad start but I don’t think this one will be as good as those shows I listed for a few reasons. The first being is that CGI during the racing is rough lol, I might adjust to it but it was definitely quite ugly. Another thing is that I wasn’t really a fan of how they came to deciding on becoming cyclists, the entire group of girls minus Izumi just immediately dropped everything to do it, Miko even dropped her YouTube channel which was sad honestly, I feel like there wasn’t even a point in making that her backstory lol.

Izumi was definitely the smartest of the bunch in actually thinking about the decision and not jumping right into it despite the fact she was already good at biking, but of course by the end it looks like she will do the same even if the letter she got was vague lol. That being said tho, I do like the designs for the girls and the backgrounds look pretty good, and they do have me interested in seeing how these bicycle races play out, of course it will also be nice for fanservice sake as they’re wearing those tight outfits on toned bodies as we saw with Kurume in the bath scene, so there’s stuff to like for sure, I’ll be sticking with this. I really liked that OP as well, it was a great jam, it’s just unfortunate the ED will not be “Bicycle Race” by Queen lol, maybe one day it’ll happen.

The fourth and final of the sports premieres I watched this season. And next to Etoile's futuristic style, Tonbo's unusual setting and Battery's gag comedy variation, it was certainly the most traditional one. But that is not a bad thing, because it was executed quite well. Maybe I'm a sucker for those kind of "chase your dream" stories, but I really enjoyed it!

Of course, the CGI is trash. But that doesn't matter to me if the story works. Besides, if we talk about visuals, I gotta give it credit for Kurume actually being an athlete with muscles and not another beautified generic girl.

As a cyclist and a fan of shows like Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling club. This was actually my most looked forward to anime this season. But I think it's probably one of the worst I've seen in a while.

First of all it's about Team Pursuit Track Cycling which is the IMHO one of the most boring sports on earth to watch. They show 5 seconds of it, and then half of the episode is a hot springs scene in a failed attempt to try to make this show vaguely interesting. The animation is flat and cheap looking. And the characters a so generic they need to list who they are so you don't get them mixed up.

Sadly I think this show is going to be a hard pass for me.

Cute ideas that are not executed well at all, the animation and character writing is stiff and lifeless, and it feels like they had no idea how to structure a story at all. The first ep should be about establishing the characters and premise but it looses itself in random details and actively skips the important parts. I’m a bit sad cause I was curious for the premise but it’s not really worth caring about tbh, there’s better sports and Yuri anime out there

this surely didn't grab me ... i'll probably keep watching, but like i said, i'm not a big fan yet

the animation isn't the best, i'm not interested in cycling and half the episode was the main girl trying to decide if she wants to cycle or not lol i mean, it's normal to have those doubts, it's a big step and a big amount of time/effort needed, and it might even make her have bad grades on the big exam... but it's also something she likes to do, and her friends/idol support her on that

i barely even paid attention to the girls, while i usually like looking at anime girls, i mean, 90% of my anime decisions are based on how cute the girls look in the preview picture
from this, all i remember is one girl has pink hair with a nice hairstyle, and that their eyes look pretty wth many lines
favorite "new girls" from summer <3 ... click sig for older seasons and more possible picks (rip all the other choices)

Bad CG aside, pilot was okay. Wish there was a better into to the characters than the info dump, though.

Maybe 3d bad, but other 2d looks great. And it’s worth paying tribute to the creators of the anime, 3D is used only at distant angles, as soon as the angle changes to close-up classic 2D. And scene in onsen looks great.

The story telling is so weird. Everything is a plain info dump by the characters. Who are these characters? Info dump. The mission & vision of the current competitors? Info dump.

I also had so many minor questions when watching the show. I eventually got the answers but if its just some background info but not a shocking reveal I shouldn't have to had those questions in the first place. Like why are they at a hot spring? Is it a training camp? Are they already in a cycling high school club or sth? Are they high schoolers or college students? That girl had a YT channel about cycling they must be practicing already. Wait no they are not even in a high school club. There is nothing that shows they love the sports other than them watching a game. Then suddenly they commit into being an athlete?

There is also no personality differentiation so far for most of the characters, making it a bit hard to remember who is who.

The 1st episode also lack any introduction to the sports, mechanics of the bike, techniques, format of the sport, different play style etc. I wish they wont do it in an info-dump way.

Weird and unacceptable creations of CG in this time and age, appalling movements of the cyclists, and most of all, unnatural VAs' that didn't even try giving life to their respective characters... or didn't try enough.

Nonetheless, the OP was cool.

P.S. The eyes are staticly weird.

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

@Cbr_Star i like minami kamakura as well, i would recommend "long riders!" if you haven't watch it, its more about casual cycling though but they went through a marathon tournament if you like the competitive aspect of cycling

This was... a weird watch. One of the few shows that made me almost break my promise to myself to give every show at least the full first episode to grab me. There was something weird and off about how it was animated, which is why I find it odd everyone here praising the 2d animation.

It first set in right off the bat with the main characters coming one one-by-one, barely looking at eachother and saying their lines deadpan to the camera. Bad blocking? Bad direction? Wait, direction? But it's animated. The 3D then was obviously a turn off but no need to bring that up, we all seem to agree on that at least. Another example of this is the red head in the onsen: at one point, she's talking and ends the cut with a specific expression on her face, the cut then goes to a different angle on her, but with no time jumps. Error - her expression is entirely different. I suspect there is more things like this going on, digging into my subconscious and giving me that weird feeling.

The weird movement/ lack thereof continued into the next scenes, along with deadpan deliveries of info-dumping lines. Like another commenter mentioned. I almost fell asleep when the scene changed to the girls from the actual race in front of a TV chatting about nothing interesting and delivering a long-winded purpose speech in a manner you'd expect in a final episode after we're supposed to have had a chance to get connected to the characters.

Then there's the subtitle errors - English grammatical mistakes that make some sentences ununderstandable. They are few but consistently there. Maybe someone without my neuro weirdness could interpret, but stuff like that absolutely destroys my ability to understand sentences. Like the thing with the falling water and telling her to move away from it for some reason.

So here I am, taking a break at the 11 minute mark to try to finish the episode after, so here I go.

Somewhat later in I'm starting to wonder if the voice actors were given the lines with no context and a director who didn't give a crap how they were delivered. The characters sound.. emotional but not exactly as they should for the emotions of some scenes. Or maybe that's not it. Maybe it has to do with the animation weirdness I was mentioning before, like the voice actors emotions and tones not matching the characters faces. It's hard to put my finger on.

It's not helping that the info dumps are extremely boring but due to them being... well... info dumps, I can't really speed it up much to get through faster.

There is that saying - show don't tell and that's the problem here. All these characters who were introduced as text dumps of their names on screen are just deadpan delivering a dump each of why they wanna cycle.

I haven't seen further direct grammar errors but there are some sentences that seem oddly translated, like in bland sentences that wouldn't be common for English. Oh, there was one more during the onsen scene where they mixed up the plural and singular in one sentence. Oh, one at the end. Yo, translators: you can't put a "PS" in the middle of a letter. That's not what a PS is /facepalm.

Yo wtf, all her friends decide to train for cycling and go hard and she's all like "nah" for half a year of montage? "I can't decide wahhh." Yo bruh I think you already decided "no" by ditching your friends for 6 months. That's a character complaint, though. Everyone is different and often we run into people we can't understand individually in media.

Oh the classic "don't bother translating a Japanese word" at the end there. ug. For anyone wondering, "dagashi" is cheap, individually wrapped sweets. Bing image search is good for Japanese words. Can't see the reasoning for not translating that.

Addendum: Apparently this show shares a streaming service with Blue Archive, which also had major complaints about translation/ English grammar so well, there we go.

Yowamushi Pedal is a massive franchise so I thought I’d get an idea on what a cycling show feels like, but I hope it isn’t like this, lol.

Animation was poor and the whole transition between scenes threw me off. I think I’ve had enough.
