I get that its highly reliant on a Gimmick just like last season's rom-com of the girl always forgetting her glasses, but unlike the clear school romance theme written for the sole purpose of highlighted glamorized still shots and frames for an implied ecchi fetish stereotype, i don't quite understand the theme or film direction of this one. it has some structural comedy elements but is this a comedy? Is this what you would call Japanese zoomer comedy?

It's mystery and suspense, comedy as well, due to the bizarre nature of the series. Supposedly, things just get weirder as it goes on.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

I spent the first 10 minutes of this anime trying to figure out what the hell was going on. I thought it may be a horror anime at first it's just the vibe I got from it.. But it just got weird really quick and honestly I'm kinda hooked.

It’s a comedy with a mystery element. If you watch the mangaka’s other adapted work, Sakamoto Desu Ga, it makes a whole lot more sense.

i ask the same question when i see a lot of shitty repetitive iseaki or ecchi series each season for d*mb people. this anime is quite original (i've read manga and it is kinda bizarre but interesting). something else and new in anime world.

there is only one episode so far just wait and see! thats literally how stories work. IF it caught your attention, continue watching or go read the manga since its already completed or just go watch something that is already done airing, y'all are so impatient sometimes. Give time for the story tell itself and you'll see what its about... it might be good or bad but you still gotta wait for it

@smallest_moon "that's literally how stories work"

um no, that's NOT how stories work or writing in general. in any "good" writing or story you need a clear and defined goal or direction to move the plot forward. this is basic writing 101 and the reason why the majority of stories narrate a history, showcase some kind of backflash, or create a climax to instill a change.

They literally changed entire locations or settings from the orphanage to the family home without anything except from the fact of introducing a whole another character and the odd motiveless behavior that can maybe be explained by a single line of dialog "we cant keep them all". even if this is a mystery, this is simply crap writing. in mysteries it is pretty standard to explain or reveal the extraordinary with the ordinary or the seemingly ordinary with the extraordinary. this episode however doesn't explain anything. if you need a hour long special to get a point across then you simply put out a special as thats no ones fault but your own because you're the one who wrote it after all.

@chenfeng i dont quite agree, i mean just because the majority of stories happen one way does this mean we cant break the formula and tell stories any other way? thats the fun in telling stories right?

i get that you might not like it, after all we all have different tastes but i think a story doesnt have to reveal everything right away specially not on the first episode, its fine if you dont know where its going especially since this is a mystery. i mean it can become a problem plot wise in the future if you really dont know where the story is going but to me this is fine for now. theres not enough to say whether this is good or bad

i have no clue what is happening but im interested, it might end up in disappointment but it might also not. some stories only start making sense a couple of episodes in so you just have to be patient but again this is just what i think, totally understandable if you disagree with me

WTF do you mean that you "get that its highly reliant on a Gimmick" if you 'don't quite understand the theme or film direction" of this? And to compare this to the Anime with the girl who always forgets her eyeglasses? Can you elaborate what's the reason behind that comparison or in what way this anime and that is similar? You should stick to the shows that you understand and enjoy instead of criticizing some shows that you do not fully understand.

@smallest_moon there's a reason why best selling books are composed a certain way. a story's structure does matter.

as for direction its not about revealing something relating to the plot or not, its about HAVING a plot. like in any basic murder mystery, we don't need to know who the killer is episode one, but we do need to have at least a murder, the plot is structured around finding the murderer. that is why they added a mini climax in the beginning, to define the goal or purpose.

@Ikimonogakucc nice try, baccano is a train murder mystery that's seeking to find the identity or location of the antagonist by reflections of the past, durarara is a a collection of characters and sub plots revolving around the main character's romance paired with her goal of trying to find her missing head. contrary to what you believe they all have specific direction and goals

@Ikimonogakucc a gimmick is just a tool or device to sell you something, it in itself isn't necessary to the story or plot or direction. having a cat-girl is a gimmick, having a harem is a gimmick, having all the female characters in the cast with oversized breats is a gimmick, a commercial with unrealistic food proportions or people smiling in the background are all gimmicks.

@chenfeng oh okay, for me, I'll just wait for few episodes to grasp what's to come or what's to expect in this anime. Considering some manga readers saying it gets better each chapter and others saying that the storytelling and phasing is perfect like there's no filler / everything is well thought out and has purpose on the story so for now, I'll wait for the upcoming episodes and see if it's really true.

What is this anime even for? This is a nonsensical question.
Who is this far? Obviously it's for all viewers interested in the series' premise and that very intrigued by its first episode.
You still don't understand the themes and general direction because you're watching serialized entertainment, not everything is going to be spelled out right from the start, especially in the case of a mystery series like Migi to Dali.

@chenfeng did i say it doesnt matter? no i didn't and again if you'd read what i just said... so what if the majority of things happen in a way? the beauty of art is to experiment. sometimes it falls flat sometimes it doesnt but its important to do original things. just because theres a popular structure doesnt mean you gotta do it all the time: neil gaiman would love to have a few words on that... anyway you just dont like it and thats fine. and yeah youre right in what youre saying but sometimes the goal and/or purpose can be a spoiler itself. sure we dont know what is the endgame but there is one otherwise surely they wouldnt be going through this work.

though i think its rather easy to read the vibes here: in the very beginning theres a woman bleeding to death and she's holding necklace/pendant thing, in the end one of the twins is wearing it as a necklace and to me it looks like their attention is caught when one of the kids mention where the old couple is from, so im assuming that whatever happened to that woman was near. from the way she looked, its probably safe to assume that she was their mother and that her death was caused by someone. once again im assuming here but theyre probably after the person responsible.

either that or there are two necklaces and they're hoping to find their mother again with the only connection they have.

but yeah if you dont like it, dont see it. otherwise just let the story happen lol

thanks for the reminder. i didn't even remember that it was so brief and oddly placed until the second episode elaborated on it i felt it was rather meaningless. like i said, if you gotta do a hour premiere special to even basically introduce a plot then do what you need to do because tv anime simply isn't the same as reading manga you read at your own leisure. case in point if you were to tell this story in a verbal format, your audience would be like, wtf is this guy even talking about?

honestly this the first time I've seen an anime use suspense and a horror-like atmosphere as built up for comedy, and I freaking love it.
I was very confused the first episode but then already understood what this show is trying to do during the second one.
What I mean is, I'm really looking forward to see waht this anime has in store, is so weird yet funny and even wholesome??? (for me at least) Idk but I'm hooked lol.

um no, that's NOT how stories work or writing in general. in any "good" writing or story you need a clear and defined goal or direction to move the plot forward. this is basic writing 101 and the reason why the majority of stories narrate a history, showcase some kind of backflash, or create a climax to instill a change.

@chenfeng It's a bit odd to hear that from someone who rated both 'Angel Beats!' and 'Death Parade' 10/10, because in both of these shows the central conflict, the story of the main character is only revealed very slowly and it's only the second half of the show focussing on it really.

I suggest you pay attention and possibly revisit episode 1 to watch

and also to:

And if all else fails and you just can't get into Migi to Dali, let me point you to three other shows that start this season, which are all three mystery or suspense and all of them contain comedy, even though only two of them are tagged as such:

Undead Unluck
Kamonohashi Ron
Under Ninja

All of them start really interesting, so it's a great season so far for mystery-comedy enjoyers.

Me. I love it. Love the character design, the timing and humor, the mystery, the sort of 70s manga feel. The direction feels like a blend between Osamu Dezaki and Kunihiko Ikuhara, with a dash of Mouryou no Hako. It's the anime I'm most excited about this season. Also fun to hear Mitsuishi Kotono as the mother.

@Mazoy those two examples you mentioned are both present themselves atypical of their genre while adding a mid story twist. A simple misdirection for dramatic effect. At no point did those anime have a lack of direction until your occasional midway filler/fanservice episodes as most anime typically do for that time instead of today's "recap" and ova/special mid/post season.

This is totally different however as a structural plot wasn't outlined until the second episode which im confidently assuming is still in the first coulple chapters of the mango or whatever prior media form it existed in. As i said before tho Anime is not manga, nor it is a ln. the format it is presented in should be considered and planned out long before production starts. Its just a terrible way to write an anime. The confusion is needless and pointless, It could've been done better is all.

As for the new 3 it funny how they are the oppsite of the issue i was explaining liteereally in episode 1 everything is laid out; the hero is and is named undead, the heroine unluck....the protag in the second one isnt a "professional" ninja, hes a "under" ninja lmao. no bs there it is exactly what its named lol

It’s a comedy with a mystery element. If you watch the mangaka’s other adapted work, Sakamoto Desu Ga, it makes a whole lot more sense.
@42Meanings I got huge Sakamoto Desu Ga from the perfectionist actions. Didn't realize it was actually from the same author!

@chenfeng you can't appreciate it because you're probably brain dead

The first 20s of the show literally shows a dead woman, and then we get to see our protagonists from the poster.

Anyone who passed high school would be able to figure out that the dead woman most likely has some relation to our protagonists.

@2LongDidntReview as someone who supposedly passed high school its rather surprising that you couldn't fathom that a non discript foreshadow like that has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm talking about. Every character needs some clear goal or objective to drive the plot line. To have an effect you must have a cause, and their unnatural behavior and actions were not explained until the second episode where; 1 their goal was explicitly stated and 2 the flashback was expounded upon. it was then did the story actually start everything you saw before was just event with no direction.

@chenfeng Wow, do you really need a literally plan to be explained before we can see any action? Maybe you needed subtitles that pointed out all of the subtle hints?

Not knowing the character's goal, but seeing their actions... moves the plot forward.

Starting with their goal explicitly stated and a flashback is going into the the territory of an infodump, and would be much less interesting since we don't even have any interesting connection with the characters.

Don't bother with trolls, the worst thing you can do when you find one of this dumbfucks is arguing with them, they are like npcs that will repeat themselves again and again and will never admit how dumb they are.

Is for me, who’s fedup of the millions of isekai that comes out each season. The Japanese VAs for Migi & Dali’s are excellent, two of my favourites. Give it a try. If you don’t like it, then skip it. I’m glad there’s many who thinks it’s a good anime.
