Gonna' need to finish the original, and the second show was said to be a bit of a letdown, so not sure what to think but I'll give it a shot eventually.

This does not look good, they should really stop making more FLCL after the disasters that are progressive and alternative. It’s clear that FLCL was a product of its time and only came together because of the people who worked on it in the first place, so to devalue the IP like this makes me sad as a fan

I liked Progressive more than Alternative. I'm also surprised I rated the original a 9 considering I don't recall liking it too much. I feel in all three cases I liked it mainly because of The Pillows and a few beautifully animated scenes more so than the stories.

I didn't want a sequel so it's not like I feel strongly about this... That said. I find the gatekeeping surrounding these announcements to be really cringe. Like, don't watch it. It's existence isn't going to hurt you. I don't recall Alternative having any connection to the original and Progressive was very light on it so it's not as if it ruined the original's story.

The increase in dog shit-looking full CG anime is rather annoying. I'd give it a shot if it was 2d, but I'll pass on this.

I'm still open to new FLCL, but my concern is the fact that the subtitle is Grunge. Like one of the thinks I liked about FLCL is the pillows and their "garage band" sound. Grunge feels more edgy for some reason but we'll see.

I actually had some hope when I first saw the picture because FLCL in a cyberpunk setting can be interesting, but it completely disappeared when I watched the PV. FLCL with ugly CGI is a no-no (especially since the animation is one of the best aspects of the original). I'll still keep an eye on it because we can always be surprised but for now it unfortunately doesn't look good. They should've just let the original alone instead of milking the franchise like that.

Looking at the poster again, I'm not even sure that's cyberpunk. And it doesn't even look that good. Yeah I'm really not sure about it. But I'm still waiting to be surprised.

I've never looked down on an anime for having cg or otherwise janky art, as long as the general aesthetic still holds up (I will defend the styles of Aku no Hana and Ajin until the day I die), but...

The second I saw that uglyass ~80s~ neon pink + blue color combo for the logo, this turned into a hard pass unless I end up hearing that it's really good. I'm so fucking sick of that design trend, it's overdone and a lazy way to get people to think your work is #cool and #cyberpunk (and it usually works, much to my dismay). I'm 100% nitpicking and getting overly pissed at a pet peeve of mine, but it says a lot to me already about how uninspired this is going to be.

The style/aesthetic just isn't to my taste, anyways. It looks competent, but overdone, and I have to wonder what it will look like in scenes with less going on.
I've never liked the overly bouncy/stretchy looks some series go for ("Look at how EXPRESSIVE and FLUID our animation is lol you guys should totally post about us on ur animation blog").
I love love love expressive animation, but you have to use that sort of stuff in moderation for it to be done well - and, from what we've (admittedly briefly) seen, this... does not.

It's like instead of learning after Progressive and Alternative, they decide to ruin it another step further. I don't understand how anyone could be hype for it when at this point it's a clear cash grab.

It speaks volumes to Adult Swim's current state in the anime industry at the moment.

expressive and fluid? oh boy. have you ever watched the original FLCL? or the two that came afterwards? stretching. fluidity. distortion. whatever you want to call it, was a problematic technique anime directors and animators LOVED 'back in the day'. the director of the original FLCL was an otaku through and through. he was a fanboy of the highest caliber. dude even wrote his Master's Thesis in film-school on Evangelion. he was so proud of it he even included lines from his thesis as mumbling grumbling rambling lines in the script.

i'm not a huge 'One Piece' fan, but... Sanji... the blond guy in the black suit... he's the crew's cook? he fights with his legs? those legs of his... stretching, fluidity, distortion. Luffy himself being all rubber... same thing...

the classic 'Gainax boing' where boobs are flying around all over the places like their bras are not even there and the laws of physics of titty movement are seriously infringed upon. that too is part of the 'distortion' of form you're complaining about. it just evolved from the previous iterations.

spaghetti arms and legs. the elongated triangular or even almond shaped face, knife pointed noses and jawlines, impossibly long and slender fingers, characters with no visible bends in their limbs/joints.... cleft chins so huge and bulbous that they look like ass-cheeks on people's faces... these are also distortions.
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

Will it be as good as the original?
No, no chance in hell
Will it be good?
I will probably think so, I liked season 2
I think flcl has become a sort of experimental ground for new talent to show off what they can do, so i don't really see it as a bad thing that it's getting new seasons

'you have to use that sort of stuff in moderation for it to be done well". I stand by what I said there, but maybe moderation wasn't the best word for it... maybe something more like "you have to use that sort of stuff with appropriate restraint for what is being animated." Some of my favorite anime, just by art and animation, are Lupin III part 3, Mind Game, Mob Psycho, etc etc - I'm familiar with squash and stretch and I really enjoy when art gets weird or proportions get inaccurate, trust me. I actually go out of my way to watch especially stylized anime and anime that put focus on the animation over the static appearance of the art.

I just think you need a purpose for those things - what movement are you trying to show, and what impact should that movement have? Is the intensity of the character's expressions suitable for what the writing is trying to convey? Are you just looking flashy for the sake of looking flashy?

That's all I'm trying to say here, you can overdo some otherwise very useful/impressive techniques, depending on the context and way in which they are used. Lots of movement and distortions don't make animation any better on their own - they're tools that can be used, misused, and overused. I watch the trailer for this show and see technically impressive animation, but it feels hollow and tryhard because there's just too much with not enough impact to justify it.

I do think I could've worded things better, my choice to bring up shows that are "overly" stretchy/bouncy should've stressed that the movement/context/impact of a scene is what decides that threshold.

tl;dr I agree with you on everything you said, lol, but you can misuse even the coolest techniques. The trailer for this show is ugly af. The animation has a lot going on but is, despite and partially because of that, still ugly af.

The real FLCL sequel was hidden under everybody's nose the whole time: Diebuster.

Technically a Gunbuster sequel, but it was done by a few of the same key people who worked on FLCL around the same time, and it shows. The creative spirit is so much closer to the first FLCL than Progressive/Alternative/whatever else it's hilarious.

Manipulating its fans with their nostalgia. That's what they tried to do with the other sequels and look how that turned out. Considering this, my expectations are really low.
