▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Interview #238 - @_cjessop19_ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

(Big, Fat, Voluptuous, Round Anime Tiddies; Anime Entry Guide Club)

Black Science Guy™

"The path to being cultured is a difficult one, perhaps you would find solace with a pair of big anime tiddies."

Interview conducted by: @NextUniverse
Reviewed by: @AlexPaulLEWZ

Mr Black Science Guy, please tell us more about yourself.

Why of course! My name is Chris, but you can refer to me as CJ or cjessop. I'm a petrol station worker by day and an anime tiddie enthusiast by night. I'm a 21-year-old British-born Melbournian and an aspiring astrophysicist. I'm about to start my Bachelor's Degree in Science, majoring in Physics next year. I'm an introvert and I'm quiet, but I do well to express and articulate myself through the medium of text.

What is the story behind your username?

When I joined MAL, I was originally named _cjessop18_. C is the initial of my first name, Jessop is my last name, and 18 was my age at the time as I just finished school. When I turned 19 two years ago (I'm an old man at this point), I changed my name to _cjessop19_. I found this name more preferable and I've stuck with it since, as it's the most natural-sounding.

I wasn't really interested in having a flashy name to stick out in the forums, I thought my last name would be unique enough, as there's only 5 other users with "Jessop" in their name, and I'm really the only one out of the five that are still active. I'd love to see statistics of the site that involve username frequency and trends, like how many users reference AoT or a certain color or if they use special characters—get onto it, mods!

Could you give us the history of your time on MAL?

I remember my beginnings like it was yesterday. November is when Year 12 students in Australia do their final exams and finish school, so I was coming off the bat from weeks of studying and preparation. Before anime, I was watching cartoons, and the site I was using for the past few years at that point was watchcartoononline, as you would. So, I loaded the site one day and I got recommended 3 series: Rewrite, JoJo Part 4, and Kizumonogatari. I watched Rewrite dubbed, since the site either recommends dub or sub anime. I found that pretty enjoyable. I also watched the Kizu trilogy, which technically speaking, isn't the wrong way of starting the Monogatari Series. I just had to rewatch it after finishing Bake.

I then googled JoJo Part 4, since there were five parts available on the site and I was confused at where to start (Part 5 just started), and the MAL entry was the first thing that appeared. So, I clicked the link to the page, and this was the first time I became fully aware of anime and MAL. Funnily enough, it took me over a year to find Rewrite on MAL as the only thing I could remember from the show were the red ribbons that made the wispy noises.

I then created my profile and began keeping track of the shows I've seen, I even taught myself BBCode to design my list. I can't do it anymore lol, and my list is good as it is now. I soon became active in the forums and clubs and sailed smoothly up to this point. Now, I'm in my third year on this site.

How did you get into anime/manga?

As stated in the previous question, I got into anime at the same time I joined MAL. I never really grew up on childhood shows like Pokemon or Yu☆Gi☆Oh!. I was, and still am to this day, a massive Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars: The Clone Wars fan, but I also grew up playing a lot of video games, so I never developed an interest for anything outside of CN/Nickelodeon or Fox (Simpsons, Futurama, South Park).

For manga, I mostly started off reading ecchi and harem series like Domestic Girlfriend, Food Wars, and Kiss x Sis—like what any other horny teenager does. I find it more difficult to read manga as I need to be in a certain mood to binge dozens of chapters at once, which is a feeling that I rarely get nowadays. I want to be invested in manga like I am with anime, but that'll take a long time to achieve, hence why my manga numbers pale in comparison. If a manga peaks my interest, I'll make way and give it a shot.

NextUniverse: CN/Nickelodeon were the real childhood days for sure. Any particular shows that you have fond memories of? What do you think about Chowder (the show) by the way if you have watched that?

I remember enjoying Adventure Time, Regular Show, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Samurai Jack, SWTCW, ATLA & Korra, and Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited. Chowder was enjoyable to watch as well.

Could you recommend us three of your favorite anime/manga?

Definitely! My top three anime are: Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes), Monogatari Series, and Gintama. My top 3 manga/LN are: Slam Dunk, High School DxD, and Grand Blue. I'll recommend two of each.

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes) (anime): What can I say besides what a fucking amazing series this show is. LotGH is an old and slow anime, and is an acquired taste to get into. Having read the novels, I can confidently say that this is one of the best written space operas I have ever seen. It blows Star Wars and George Lucas out of the water in terms of its writing. It requires a lot of patience as it slowly builds up its world(s), characters, politics and stakes, but the payoff at the end is enormous, hence why this series has such a cult following. Yang and Reinhard are some of my favorite characters in anime (as well as many others from the Free Planet Alliance and Galactic Empire).

Monogatari Series (anime): Senjougahara is my waifu, she did a JoJo pose, enough said. But for real, one of the main aspects I love about this series are the interactions between the girls and Araragi, and the unique way Shaft adapted the LN. I'm a sucker for great, character-driven series like Monogatari and LotGH, and we get to see many of the characters get fleshed out and toothbrush-ed thanks to the help of Arararargi-kun (sorry, I stuttered).

Slam Dunk (manga): It's undoubtedly one of the greatest manga series of all time, definitely the greatest sports series I've seen, and it's certainly the most influential. I played basketball at school in my free time and during lunch, at school, so I understand the basics of the game. It's funny, it's dramatic, it's gritty, the art is fantastic, but my god is it perfectly executed. Inoue is a legendary mangaka, and I wholeheartedly recommend you start this series, even if you have no interest in the sport. It's a real shame the anime stopped when they boarded the train for the tournament, but let's pray the movie does the final two games the justice that it deserves.

High School DxD (LN): I'm gonna throw a curve ball here. First of all, forget about the anime. The anime doesn't do justice to the LN thanks to TNK. So much of the novel was poorly translated into the anime and they even butchered the source material for S3 (volumes 5-7), hence why many people have mixed feelings for S4. You know the story is like 70% inner monologue of Issei's thoughts and the rest being action and ecchi scenes, right? High School DxD has some of the best worldbuilding, characters, power progression and action you'll find in a harem & ecchi series. The series takes aspects from religion and mythology and uses it for the characters and worldbuilding, there is a lot of lore to unpack. Issei is one of the best harem protagonists I've seen (his issues in the anime literally gets resolved as S4 ended and as S5 starts (volumes 11&12)), and we get to see Issei develop into one of the strongest characters in the DxD universe as he begins to challenge the likes of Gods and other deities. And the fan service is great. If you want story and character development you'd like to be invested in, and you don't mind the ecchi aspects of the series, then High School DxD is an LN you should definitely get into.

NextUniverse: I have to say that you have good recommendation skills honestly. I will take up what you said in about 3 to 5 years’ time. I hope a lot more do as well.

Thanks. I could go ahead and recommend people read Kiss x Sis, but I'll save that for another day.

Are there any users you like/dislike? A reason why would do well too.

I'll share a list of people who I like or have worked with on this site, as I tend to forget or ignore those I dislike or hate.

@Bengofo - China's number one super idol and social credit ranking leader. Forums are always fun to be in when this based individual is around. Also, thanks for giving me Sakura Sadist on Steam. Real image of him: https://imgur.com/5mriH7V

@hacker09 - The Tampermonkey wizard himself. We were able to make scripts that worked with chiaki.site and my guides. Idk why the site devs haven't taken inspiration from many of his scripts, which I use a dozen or so to improve my experience on MAL. He's always around in Suggestions & Support to provide help or scripts when needed. Scripts: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1849731

@Adimus_prime & @Jeff_Caesar - Big, Fat, Voluptuous, Round Anime Tiddies wouldn't have been the juggernaut it is now if it weren't for these two. Shoutout to the rest of the staff from BFVRAT as well.

@User-Name - someone who helped speed up the guide making process for the Anime Entry Guide Club. I have over 300 guides available thanks to the help of him.

Do you happen to have any hobbies outside of anime/manga and MAL?

Besides anime and manga, I play a lot of video games. I used to play a lot of FIFA when I was younger, as I have every version from '08 to 19, but then the games turned to shit and I had to stop because I kept having anger issues thanks to the games. My life is a lot better now that I've stopped playing haha.

My favorite video game series is Assassin's Creed, the two best games are obviously AC2 and AC Brotherhood. Ezio is easily one of the best-written characters ever developed in any gaming franchise. I wish Ubisoft went back to their roots and used the same formula that made the Ezio trilogy so successful. Ghost of Tsushima is another one of my all-time favorites.

I also play a lot of modded Minecraft. I play mostly on the FTB and ATM modpacks (ATM6, Stoneblock, SevTech, Infinity Evolved, etc). It doesn't help that the modpacks are becoming so different with each version of the game, as I have to relearn everything thanks to the new versions of the mods and the new game mechanics. I remember when 1.7.10 had all the big modpacks, now we're on 1.17.1! I can't keep up, and I'm already dreading the new updates that are coming out soon.

I also recommend checking out Dyson Sphere Program, one of the best new games of this year.

I also play soccer and tenpin bowling. I've been goalkeeper for the past 10 years now. My highest score in bowling is 184 (I use two hands like Jason Belmonte), and I'll be getting my very own bowling ball soon.

I'm a big fan of chiptune music. Anyone remember DJ Cutman and his This Week in Chiptune streams? If you know of GameChops, he's the founder of that music label.

I also love to cook. Curry is my speciality, which I've written my go-to recipe here: https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=866809. I've also learned how to cook Tonkatsu and other Japanese dishes (I have a deep fryer at home).

How do you feel about how the site is run? Especially in regards to the moderators and admins.

Quite bad actually. Allow me to list my complaints:

- Inconsistent moderating and application of the rules, also preferential treatment of certain users depending on the moderator. I've made hundreds of posts evading the 30-character limit, and I've received a ban for it one time, which was bullshit as another user did the same thing and got away with it, the post I got banned for already reached the 30-character limit before spamming vvvvv to point at my BFVRAT club banner. The mod thought that I was breaking the rule without actually checking, and I had to wait a day before I got my ban removed once I reminded him of what the other person told the mod.

- Site has been incredibly slow for the past few years to implement new features, it's only until recently that the pace has picked up. I'm still waiting for MAL Dark Mode (dark mode browser extension makes the site lag for me).

- So many shit threads and reposts of the same topic/question, mods are slow to take action to minimize posts that create toxicity and rivalry between certain fanbases—some of these posts can get over 100 replies before getting locked.

- People can still affect the score of an anime by spamming votes, regardless of spam accounts. 5,000 salty FMAB fans can knock down the score of a show by a few points if they coordinate it online (look at Fruits Basket: The Final).

- Reviews are just a speed contest of who can post their review the quickest once the final episode discussion is posted. It doesn't matter how good you write your review, you most likely will get less upvotes as people only see what the 4 main reviews are on the front page of an anime. All my reviews that have received >100 upvotes are high because I timed my post to the second the final episode discussion aired. The site should randomize reviews and hide their helpful numbers so that people are more willing to check out other reviews besides the ones that the majority of people vote for.

I haven't had that much trouble with the admins since they're quite quick with the response to the reports and support posts I've submitted/posted. I was able to get the club images fixed again.

NextUniverse: That's quite a huge list of problems. Whilst I agree with quite a few of them, especially the "seasonal review rat race" (quite an asinine culture tbh). Do you not think that MAL has a lot of good things to talk about? Or have the negatives truly overshadowed the positives of the site?

Obviously MAL has its perks and conveniences like its database, statistics & available information on a lot of series (though not enough imo—from the series I've made guides for), and providing myself the opportunity to spread the joy and love of big anime tiddies in the forums and clubs. It's just when it comes to those issues I've listed, it lowers the enjoyment of being on this site. Everyone's experiences are different, I guess.

Does any of your irl work colleagues know about how you helped create an infamous meme as big fat round voluptuous anime tiddies?
from @Crow_Black

I don't know if any of them watch anime, let alone care. The only time I've encountered someone who was an anime fan at my workplace was a customer who was wearing a FAKKU mask, which our interaction basically played out like this.

What's your favorite thing about running clubs?
from @Crow_Black

Probably the community aspect of it, being able to come together based on our common interests and needs. With AEGC, I wanted to make a place where I wanted accessible and easy-to-understand information on many series that I wanted to 100% complete. Many online guides, watch orders, and r/anime don't provide that much info on larger series with multiple entries on MAL that hardly anyone watches. I've already had people tell me how useful my guides have been since I've started making them. And with BFVRAT, a lot of people on this site are just horny and needed somewhere to quell their urges and desires. Adimus and I got on the meme at the right time and the rest is history.

What is life like in your country?
from @TheFireNinja

Besides the tyrannical government, century-long lockdowns and the crazy weather? Yeah, it's alright.

How did you develop an interest in the sciences?
from @TheFireNinja

When I was a wee child, there was a show on the History Channel that had a show called The Universe—that sparked my love for astronomy (I have all the DVDs for the show). It wasn't until a couple of years ago and having done my diploma that I've started to enjoy other sciences like chemistry and biology.

NextUniverse: Did you develop an interest in social sciences too by any chance? Or even had a liking to them?

Out of the social sciences, I mainly have some sort of interest in archeology, I mostly prefer the natural sciences.

Do you think that alien life exists? If it does, is it possible for it to evolve into intelligent beings?
from @WutIsDis

Microbial life? Most likely. Besides Earth, Europa or Enceladus are the most likely candidates for life outside of Earth. Intelligent life? Give life on another planet a billion or so years to evolve and then we'll see.

Is there anything popular that most users that used MAL during the 2019 year knows, that users who joined after 2019 doesn't know?
from @hacker09

2019 was a year where troll votes and spam bots were at their worst. Anyone who joined after the revamp got spared months/years of pain and suffering.

AlexPaulLEWZ: For 2018, it was the MALpocalypse… right?

Are there any kind of "tricks"/secrets or stories about MAL that you know, and that you would like to let users know of?
from @hacker09

This was when I used a script to add start/end dates to my list, go to an anime and click Edit Details on the LHS, click history and you'll be presented with the exact time and date that you updated the episode count of an anime. If you're adding dates manually, this will be helpful if you're unsure.

Example: https://myanimelist.net/ajaxtb.php?keepThis=true&detailedaid=1535&TB_iframe=true&height=420&width=390

What are a few things/features that MAL are missing, and there are no external tools that provides it yet, in your opinion?
from @hacker09

Dark mode, better search filters and a range option for start or finish dates (e.g. all anime that starts between Jan 1st and Jan 7th, but not including an end date.) Maybe an option to color code anime based on your list like the script I use:

What would be the most convenient thing for users to know of, to improve the way they see or use MAL?
from @hacker09

Learning how to use BBCode. Also using third-party apps like chiaki.site, malheatmap, anime.plus & mal-badges, which provides a lot more information about your history and your list.

Who's your favorite big fat voluptuous round anime tiddies character?
from @Catalano

Hanekawa Tsubasa (Monogatari Series)

I know you're a brain but how good are you at sports?
from @Catalano

I'm quite good at sports. Badminton I'm good at, table tennis I was quite good at in school, soccer I'm really good at as a goalkeeper, tenpin bowling my highest score is 184.

What anime song do you want to hear in your head the moment you stab someone in the back/betray?
from @Catalano

This is a tough one, If I'm able to stand up and turn around slowly (menacingly), maybe Lotta Feroce? (Bucciarati's theme)

Duz ur bein a spayse nerd influenc yo animu tast 😳😳😳😳
(Translation: Does being a space nerd influence your anime taste?)
from @Bengofo

I have a stronger tendency to enjoy space operas and sci-fi series more than I would otherwise.

Az creata of animu entry guide klub how do u mayk guidez 4 shid u neva wached 🤔🤔🤔
(Translation: As the creator of the Anime Entry Guide Club, how do you make guides for anime you've never watched?)
from @Bengofo

I do a shitload of research and use chiaki.site to help make guides, since they list every available anime that's a part of that series or is related (like spinoffs). It took me a week to do the Pokemon and Gundam guides.

NextUniverse: Any fitting images or words for when you have to do a guide for a series with an absurd network of relations? I wouldn't know, but it sounds like an infuriating task at times.

If a series' wiki has a chart, then there's a good chance I might use it or place it at the bottom of the guide.

It also depends on when an anime takes place on the timeline if I the series is split up in time periods or universes (Gundam), or if there are multiple ways of watch a series (broadcast vs chronological order).

Sometimes I'll have to state which season of the show or which release it is if there are multiple series in the franchise (Precure).

It takes more time the more complicated the series is. If it's just one series with multiple movies and spin-offs, then it isn't so bad. I'll just say "Watch after episode X." - (One Piece, Conan).

Back when we first started BFVRAT did you really think the club would get anywhere near as big as it is now or did you think I am just gonna make this club for the memes and see what happens?
from @Adimus_prime

I did it for the meme since it got some traction in the forums. I thought we'd get at least a few hundred people join at most, and now we're a couple hundred away from the front page of clubs as one of the powerhouses of the ecchi landscape.

What is your opinion on MAL's attitudes towards clubs in general? With other platforms like Discord having users transfer to there as well, do you think clubs are a dying entity on MAL?

I think a large portion of people just see clubs as just being there in the background of the site, and for a tiny fraction of people as just a way to come together with other groups of people with similar interests and tastes. Even the largest club only contains 0.0025% of all users on this site.

Clubs are basically just more regulated Discord groups. There's probably a good chance that we'll continue to see clubs become more inactive, but we have to consider the rate at which new members sign up for MAL, which might keep clubs active for much longer.

What is the story behind your rather iconic profile picture?

If you don't know where the image comes from, it came from the "Rare photo from Stephen Hawking's wheelchair camera moments before he passed away (2018)" meme on Reddit. And since Mr. Tyson is my favorite science presenter on TV, I decided to make him my pfp and take up the persona of black science guy on MAL.

Do you have any crazy petrol station stories to share?

This happened just a couple days ago as of writing this, but a special needs kid walked into my store and wreaked havoc by eating as much donuts and ice cream as he possibly could. He left a massive mess of half-eaten donuts and pieces of ice cream all over the place and I ended up calling the police and store security, since he couldn't communicate and his dad was nowhere to be seen. His dad came over shortly after to grab him and my boss had a go at him, he said that the kid escaped his house that has locks on the door and security cameras and ran across the street. The police came shortly after and we had to discuss what happened, and I think they already knew who the kid was and what school he goes to. So my boss had to clean the massive mess he made and it ruined both of our days since my boss and I were new to the store as we were covering for the store manager since new stores are popping up around us.

NextUniverse: There's always that one story, this is a probably pretty crazy one. Does the odd situation happen frequently or was this just a one off? Would you even call your petrol station a quiet place?

At the time this happened, I was covering a shift in another shop close by to where I work normally, so I believe and hope that it's a one-time thing. The one I usually work at is very busy as it's on a main road, the one I covered was quiet.

I see that you have a free speech absolutist mindset. Is this something you actively push forward or something you just stand by for as long as you will?

I believe in everyone's right to free speech and freedom of expression, regardless of how far left or right on the political spectrum they may be, and it's something I'll stand by until I die. I am against any calls for censorship of certain ideas and beliefs, as the best way to persuade people, solve political tension, and prevent past historical events from repeating itself is by debating and talking about said issues and topics. Censorship only makes things worse and doesn't solve any issues, and censoring ideas just because you don't like them or you're offended by them is just fascism.

Why is your Obi-Wan Kenobi your role model, lord and savior?

Isn't it pretty self-explanatory? He's the space Jesus, he's probably the most iconic character in Star Wars, he has the high ground, he's civilized, he's the master of defense-form lightsaber fighting, he's charming and witty, he's a master of trolling.

I am not entirely certain of the history of BFVRAT, but I do believe it was used when a silly forum topic came to be. With that in mind, do you find the quality of the MAL forum, be it then and now, to be anything quality?

When have the forums been good in the first place?

The only good posts are the ones that ask the really crazy questions, like recently @Dragevard's Character's Sucking Speed forum post. Those kind of posts are certified MAL classics.

Do you find yourself watching a lot of documentaries? You seem like the information kinda guy.

I watch quite a few documentaries here and there, but I mostly watch a lot of science channels that focus on engineering, chemistry, astronomy/astrophysics, biology, history, and DIY challenges. I've recently taken an interest in speedrunning and gaming challenges, since speedrunning history and game mechanics are always interesting to learn about.

NextUniverse: Oh, speedrunning is pretty cool. What games in particular have you tried to speedrun?

I haven't done any speedrunning yet. I might do speedrunning challenges myself once I find a game that I can get good at, though I need to find a lot of time to invest and develop my skills—which I don't have that much.

What are your thoughts on modern day Cartoon Network?

Cartoon Network nowadays is shit. It's past its golden era of the early 2000's, and it died when Regular Show and Adventure Time ended.

AlexPaulLEWZ: I agree.

Do you feel as if you have succeeded in spreading your face across the MAL platform?

I'm glad that you mentioned it. I just had this interaction not too long ago. It seems that I have achieved my goal.

Do you see yourself leaving MAL in the near future? @hacker09 had also asked a question related to this question, saying, do you ever plan to leave MAL due to MAL lacking a few or a specific feature?

I have no plans of leaving at all, so you'll keep seeing black science guy for decades to come.

Is there something unasked that you would like to talk about?

Shameless plug, but I've just started writing my own LN called Pyrophantasia. It's a cross between an isekai and elemental bending and martial arts from ATLA, and I plan to use my anime and manga/LN knowledge and taste to create a story that any isekai/power fantasy/action lover will enjoy. I've also started publishing it here on MAL and on Honeyfeed, so give it a read.

Any feedback on the interview format?

The format was good and easy to answer the questions, given how timezones prevented us from chatting normally.

Can you recommend three members who we can choose from to interview next, and briefly explain why you would like to read their interviews?

@hacker09 - having worked with him in the past, it would be interesting to hear about his time spent developing scripts to add new features to the site, and what his views are on how the site is run and what needs improving/to be added. It'd be good for everyone to learn about Tampermonkey as well.

@Bengofo - this man will provide you the most intriguing insight on the Chinese Social Credit system and what it means to be a role model citizen for the CCP. And knowing him for the past year or so, he will produce one of the funniest interviews that have yet to come out.

@Jeff_Caesar - one of MAL's best card makers and GFX designers for many of the top clubs that produce cards, and quite possibly the main reason BFVRAT became so popular. I'd like to know the insides of being a card maker for many of the clubs, as well as what it takes to be a good card and graphics designer.

Well then, that's the end of the interview. Thank you for your time.

Thanks for giving me this opportunity!

Well we can't really tell the extent of how much affiliations helped us grow, perhaps a good portion came from those clubs, especially the big ones like H&E.

Good interview! And great work on the Anime Entry Guide Club - it's certainly a nice resource to have. Your reviews of shorts were always entertaining to read too.
