I don't mind recap movies in general, but do we not already have 3 full-length recap movies for Seasons 1 through 2? What's the point of this?
Why not just make a recap movie that summarizes Season 3 alone and complete the "tetralogy"?
Why cover the exact same material from S1 and S2 yet again?

Why not? It's purpose is to just simplify the preparation for season 4 by condensing everything into a single recap. It goes without saying that this Chronicle is only meant for viewers who have watched all previous seasons a long time back.

Lmao as soon as I read the synopsis the only thing that came to mind was "Why"
Then to find this thread with the exact question ^^

Definitely feels weird to make a recap covering season 1 to 3.
It's got to be a really long movie aswell, there's no way you're going to put in 20 hours of story into a 2 or maybe 3 hour movie.

It's going to be a long-ass recap that's for sure, or just hella rushed lol

I do find it strange when considering that we've had separate movie recaps for previous seasons. I expected the same this time around for the 3rd season, but I guess not xD

Why?
To....
1) Promote Attack On Titan that their franchise will start again
2) Assure fans will get the same kind of quality they have seen so far
3) Rewatch : To make fans understand how much progress we have gone so far
4) Earn a substantial amount of funds to animate the other season
5) And so on...
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

SoL OVAs definitely cost more money than just editing cutting and pasting old scenes to make a recap movie

Well ... it's been a long time since season 1. And the manga exists for a long time. With the upcoming stuff happening in the last season ... I guess it is good to give a recap.

And I prefer it the way they are doing it now. Better than having countless movies. Code Geass I think hat also lots of movies recapping or retelling the stuff.

One movie for 3 seasons does not sound too bad. Better than having 3 movies each 60 minutes or so.

Why? It's not like they gonna animate new scene. Recap just use previous footages from the previous studios.

That’s right. You can see how they arrange things, however. Moreover, I think they can add some new short scenes, probably.

They are also much shorter though. And I would rather watch a single 20 minute OVA with new content instead of three 90 minutes recap movies.

I'm all for it ! Not a big fan of recaps in the middle of a season but since It's going to be SnK's last season ever, this compilation movie is a great opportunity to look back at the crazy story so far. And It will be WIT's last work on SnK :(

If it ends up animated by MAPPA, then this is literally a studio comparison at this point.

I don't see any issue with them creating a recap of all the episodes till now, but I'm actually curious of they can wrap up all of the episodes in a movie-format...
It's like they're challenging themselves; 'Can it be done? Let's find out'.

It's not difficult to make a great recap.

Do it like Gintama, instead of trying to compress everything in a rushed movie, just add narration explaining in detail every single thing that happened with key scenes playing the background, documentary style.

You don't need to re-adapt 20 hours of anime or anything, just be sufficiently informative with the content in hand. You can easily cover most of the ground in one hour or so, going very in-depth at that. I've seen Youtube videos covering every single thing that happened in big ass arcs from other anime in much less time and just as efficiently anyway.

The big problem of recaps is how well they are covering the content to be talked about, not how much they are trying to cover in a short amount of time.

So many recaps listed in this site are pointless attempts of doing something like that, when just narrating the happenings in detail with the important things going on the screen while they are at it is just so much more easy, well-made, well-executed and most of all, handy.

And considering the famous Armin's PoV canon narrative coverage, I bet this will be extremely easy to do just like that. I'm looking forward to this recap.

gonna share this here

But more than anything, compilation films are just really, really cheap to make. Even if nobody goes to see them, the cost of producing them is a small fraction of the cost to make a single episode of anime. No new animation needs to be made (and if it does, it's usually only a couple of minutes' worth). Usually only a single voice actor is required to add new narration. No new music needs to be composed. Most of the sound design can be re-used. When an entirely new product from an existing franchise can be made for only the cost of hiring a few editors, making it becomes a question of "why not?"

But i wouldn't have ignored a lone S3 recap, though. I watched all the previous recap movies just fine, and i don't plan to ignore this one either. I don't hate recaps, plus i'm a completionist, anyway.

I just don't see why they have to cover the same ground that's already been perfectly summarized before. It makes me worried that this movie will turn out to be a rushed, incoherent mess.

That would definitely be the best way to go about it. I recently watched a YT video that summarized the entire Tsukihime visual novel in just 40-ish minutes, by simply narrating the main events while showing key scenes in the background; so it can be done. Unfortunately, i don't recall seeing this kind of storytelling format being used in recap movies very often.

Though in AoT's case, i suppose it wouldn't really feel out-of-place since, as you mention, the series has a history of using Armin for voice-over narration a lot.

Yes, there is no recap movie for either parts of S3. That's my point: it would have been better if they recapped S3 alone, because we already got 3 perfectly fine recap movies that cover S1 and S2.

On one hand, I understand that this is aimed at people who know the basic plot outline thus far and just want a refresher. As such, a LOT of content will be cut (assuming it's not some kind of absurdly long movie).

However, the previous recap movies could stand on their own. So I do agree that this seems somewhat out of place.

Regardless, I want to watch it anyway. I would have no problem with going to watch a 4-5 hour movie in theaters. Speaking of which, I hope Funimation releases this in theaters like they did with the Season 2 recap.

It makes sense if you want a recap to prepare for S4 or to show it to people who wanna get into the Manga/Anime but don't wanna commit to a longer Anime. I'll prob just watch it anyway because SNK has really good animation in general and I can't get enough of that.
