How does it feel to know it exists, but never be able to watch it?

Pretty bad. I had a sudden urge to jerk it to hentai older than my grandmother that I now cannot fulfill.

I'm fine with that since I probably wouldn't have liked watching it anyway. But it's too bad practically noone will ever be able to say they've seen the world's first adult anime. And I think it's appalling that people who have the anime in their list marked it as anything other than plan to watch—I hope those lying bastards get chain bans.

Ok so here (https://ja.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%99%E3%83%BE%E3%81%BF%E8%88%9F) it says that it was donated by the police to the film branch of National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo (which is now the National Film Archive of Japan)

Also, since i've got nothing to do in quarantine, i tried to calculate its length. The museum received two 35mm film reels, one measuring 219.1 and the other 211.2 meters. Combined that's 430.3 meters. 35mm film is oriented vertically when projected, and each frame is 18.7mm tall. I multiplied 430.3 by 1000 to get milimeters (430,300) and then i divided that by 18.7 to get the number of frames (23,010). For this i assumed that it runs at 24fps (before films had sound, not every single film ran at the same speed) I then divided 23,010 by 24, which gave me 958.7 seconds of run time. I divided that by 60 to get minutes. It runs for roughly 16 minutes

nice calculations, but having this be a database based facts giving from people that have the actual source material, even if the math checks out, we cant go by assumptions.

EDIT:

I went back to looking at the sources, interesting that they are still being updated. Maybe one day they will release the film online. It is stated that it was released to the public domain as the author of the work cant be determined and anything before 1953 has no copyright.

Anyway, at the writing of this, the only news I can find on this are blog articles, twitter posts and the such (togetter). Searching the main website turns up nothing (though searching すづみ船 gives you a link to "Archive of Lights" a video made for the website) I did a search for Kimura Hakuzan, who is the believed creator, but I only found links to their blog (film archive) that was last updated in 2018, along with a pamphlet from a past event. The wikipedia stated that it became apart of the archive in (令和元年) which means past April in 2019 so from there to December, at sometime it was added to the archive. Then again, the writer could be referring to that is where it now resides (as of writing), as the source that is provided is via the wayback machine and doesnt really state when it was added to the archive.

I understand that your post was mainly to speculate the length of the film, but by the archive we are given 10 mins, unless proven incorrect, the length of the film is 10 mins.

Dude, this Hentai was released just 5 years before Japan went to war with China. Some men fapped to this just before they were send off to fight in WW2. Just let that sink in for a second.
Currently on a every hentai ever marathon, from oldest to newest.

An update: Here is some things I've learned from the Japanese Wikipedia page. I checked the sources they cited. (In broken English from Google translate, of course);

The picture is completely wrong and isn't from Suzumi-bune. It's from another one of Hakuzan Kimuras works called "Nonkinatousan ryū miyamairi". It's from 1925 and isn't pornographic. The Anime Man used this picture as well. It's not from the movie. So please, if a moderator sees this post, please change that.

And from what I could gather from the messed up English, in 2018, one year after the 35mm print was donated to the National Film Archive of Japan, at a research presentation and screening dedicated to Hakusan Kimura (held by the Toy Film Museum?) they had asked the Film Center to borrow Suzumi-bune and "due to the agreement with the donor, it cannot be released.", where the museum has since requested the Film Center to make the film available to researchers.

So from what I can gather, the donor of Suzumi-bune is a complete asshole and won't even let researchers see the damn film, let alone the public! WTF!

That's odd, I asked for a mod to remove that picture before but it looks like someone readded it. This is what happens when you have database mods that can't do research/read japanese....

EDIT:

Got it edited again, this time it should stop people from uploading or approving any images.

Also, damn didn't know that was the reason it cant be seen. That's a shame.

Here to pay my respects to the first ever hentai and we'll never be able to see it. I highly doubt that this will be found due to how old it is and most of Japan's films have been destroyed during WW2.
