Sigh some people can't appreciate a good buildup in a story...

Well aren't we off to a slow start here? The first episode made me think they would, after all that attempt kidnapping stuff, rush things over to get her accepting being the captain already so we could skip to the good stuff. But nothing like that in this epi, and the preview made it look like we will still be having few things happening for a while...

(guess I'm chatty today...) Here is my take on that. Put one's self in the place of the officers of the Benten Maru. To keep your 'job' you need to get your former captain's teenage daughter to take over so the government continues to recognize your charter, but she's almost a complete unknown. Sure, she can fly, but you need to know if you can depend upon her in a crisis, life or death situation - does she have what it takes to learn to be captain?

Also, apparently, they need more than just her. Some of the crew must have bailed after the former captain died. It seems that Marika has a group of friends, all of whom have flying experience and with some in particular with some very interesting skills. It would be worth while maybe to see if they can work together as a group and solve some challenges. Then, having laid the groundwork and with the right pushing it might be possible to get some of the better ones to sign up to serve under their friend.

I actually like this way better than if Marika and half a dozen of her friends took 2 minutes to decided that the life of a pirate was what they all wanted to have. It may seem a little slow, but I personally like character and story development and this is working for me.

Man.. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks that way.
This show seems to have the potential, but most people probably got turned off by the character design/setting/whatever and prefer shits like GC/Symphogear.
But I can also admit that this show isn't everyone's cup of tea.
In the end, it comes down to each person's preferences.

viewers nowadays don't know how a good story is told. they just need their "UBERCOOL main character, " "illogical plot twists" and "adrenaline-pumping DUMB action scenes" and then the series is already an "amazing" show in their eyes, what a waste of brain

So true.
It's still kinda sad though :( .

But who the hell wants to watch 26 episodes of this high-school crap ^^. Personally, I hoped they'd be doing space battles by now, and they're only heading out on an excursion in the next episode. It's not about the buildup either, this episode was much about nothing.

Strange thing, guns and kids, much like sex and kids. Seems everyone has different, sometimes antagonistically different, opinions on both.

I grew up with guns, as did my father, his father, and his father. Both my parents, as well as many of my relatives, were military (either voluntarily or otherwise). I learned to hunt at an early age - my mother would cook anything I (or my friends) would bring home, but the rule was, I had to clean it first.

I learned to hunt around the age of 12. The day I shot my first rabbit was the day I realized why my dad got a strange look on his face whenever I pointed a toy gun at him.

Not really sure where I'm going with this other than to say that it's never a good thing to hide or ignore something regarding your kids. If you don't teach them then they'll find out what they want from others. It's likely that a teenager won't agree with what his parents try to teach him, and it's probably worse for the parents to try to force him to think as they want, but at least he'll know where his parents stand on it.

I will also note that having taught my own son (11) how to shoot last summer, he plays with toy guns far less than he used to (much to the annoyance of his cousin, who, as far as I know, has never fired a real gun).

Well, obviously a lot of people posting here not only want to watch this, but also don't consider it "high-school crap". According to the current "stats" on the anime page 80% of the people rating it consider it '7' or higher.

The point is to build everything up early on so that when the space battles do come, and they certainly will, that they actually have MEANING because we care about the characters and what they're doing. It's not just flash-bang action with a bunch of people flying around and we don't even know who they are because we're just around to see something cool happen.

No, we don't. Atleast in ep. 2 there was no character progression whatsoever. But maybe I'm too spoiled by the oldschool OVA's that could tell in 30 minutes what it takes the modern series to develop in over 26 episodes.

Oh well, at least the art is nice(can't wait for the pirate uniforms and ships to burst out) and the music has a kinda piratsy tune to it.

More world-building and setting up the stage for Marika to embrace her role as a space pirate.

For some reason, I didn't enjoy this episode like I did the previous one. It was a nice idea that a field trip was turning into a cyber space battle of some sort, but what that part lacked was a good buildup and an exciting climax. The episode ended without making some hidden enemy hacking into a what could become the main character's ship seem like a big deal. Hope it gets better in the next episode since the setting still intersts me and it's been a while since we had a space opera/adventure type of show.

I noticed that there was a pirate named Kurihara in the credits; could he be Chiaki's father? What's his relation to Marika's father?

This was a damn good episode despite certain... Elements

First the good: the animation and art were beautiful as in the last episode, Kane, Ririka and Kurihara continue to be interesting (Although Kurihara reminds me a little too much of Homura at the moment). The scene with Marika and Ririka is very well shot and gets across pretty well what I expect will be a theme of the show (The idea of freedom and power, and how they relate), it's also shows that Ririka and Marika do seem to have a loving relationship (although Marika calling her Ririka by her name makes me think the love is kind of one sided).

Now the bad: Marika is still nothing special, she's a likable character, maybe, but I currently don't really se much of a reason to care about her all that much because although she's been told some pretty huge things in these past two episodes, she hasn't really been affected by them at all. I seriously hope she gets more interesting or it could hamper this series. Additionally the pacing is a little too slow for my taste, I'd like to be clued in on what your story's about now Moretsu Pirates! Think you can do that?

Overall though, I really enjoyed this episode, and I'll certainly be continuing on with it

EDIT: Oh and I HATE this opening, gawd.

I am fairly surprised by the show. I really am digging the slow build up and the set up of the world which fascinates me already. (It looks like we're going to continue to learn more which is awesome!) While I was skeptical of her yacht member friends being useful at all I was pleasantly surprised. They all seem to know what they're doing, while being believable at the same time. That's probably an odd thing to be impressed by but I am guess I'm too used to the trope of friends who are useless or insert club that doesn't play too much of part in the stuff I read and watch. I can't wait for next week's episode with the electronic warfare, definitely interested here.
Looking at posts on the Internet wouldn't bother me so much if people didn't also mix up he and she.

Loved the exposition in this episode. Although we haven't been told directly, we are gaining information about the milieu in which the story takes place. The presence of so many competing intelligence groups and interests in the cafe indicate that this is not really that stable a political situation--as does the continuation of Letters of Marque (if interstellar relations were really peaceful those Letters would be cancelled fairly quickly). As to how a pirate ship ended up belonging to a private girl's school--you have to train your future naval officers somewhere and if you are prevented from doing it officially at a formal naval academy, then work arounds will be found. Having an almost functional warship available to the "space yachting club" is one way to provide training--in the same way that "gliding clubs" and "motor sports clubs" trained pilots for the luftwaffe and tank operators for the wehrmacht prior to the renunciation of the Versailles treaty.

I slowly gaining respect for this series. When I looked at the title for this series, I was already expecting loads of fanservice and giant, explody space battles by the second episode. But I have no complaints about the deliberate pace and the quiet moments spent with a mother.

...that said, I'm hoping to see some more action and BOOM-BOOM in the coming episodes.

I have yet to find anything to dislike in this anime. Sure, it's starting off slow, but it feels like they are winding up to a big pitch. Whether or not it will impress can only be told when that time comes. I have no problem with the pacing as long as it ends up somewhere good.

As for everything else, the art, music and characters are all well crafted and (so far) work well together. I was surprised going into this because I was expecting the usual fanservice anime. I'm glad I was wrong.

Well this episode was kind of slow with not much happening but i guess it's could be a better way to take things slowly at start and build the plot and characters than simply rush things. This is not a 12 episode anime after all. I just hope they don't overdo it because some anime show silly staff and slow progression for 80% of their episodes only to finish with a rush ending,.

This is just my type of anime to watch. It has that laidback pacing and absolutely no cheap gimmicks to rely on. I'm already fond of space opera anime, I'm sold on this. The characters seem all likable, as vanilla as they may be, I prefer them to crazy, over-the-top and charismatic characters I see so many these days.

This and Rinne no Lagrange are my favorites of this season so far, despite several sequels of other anime I like being aired right now. The main characters are really likable and even the special fx make me wonder where the studio got all that money legally.

The yuri potential between Marika and Chiaki continues to feel like over 9000. I know it's pretty much guaranteed that nothing will happen, but I can't stop feeling it ^^
