@ForgotEyeWasHere some Donghua has some great use of CGI as well.
@Old_School_Akira They've really stepped up their 3DCG game ever since Kung Fu Panda came out. Apparently Chinese animators and internet dwellers were concerned that the west can produce a Chinese culture-inspired movie better than what they could do at the time. So they've slowly stepped up their game until this point in time and it's paid off for them. Perhaps by 2030 we will see a couple more Chinese movies hit $1 billion |

You'd have to be a fool to believe Chinese propaganda. Happened to the fools who invested in gsx, nio, iq, etc. stocks and lost a lot of money. Not to mention all those education scam stocks. They even lie about their demographics.
So believing that a china only movie made more than movies available globally on 6 continents betrays peoples' lack of critical thinking. It's been 3 years since people got burned for believing their news and stats when trading their stocks and the masses already forgot about it? Sad.
Also wikipedia is not a reliable source and the two linked articles are a joke, since one just parrots the other so there's just one source, a chinese one. It's becoming a very common tactic, reminds me of the guy writing about the black samurai book and editing the wikipedia articles about it for profits.

Such info on the internet is obvious propaganda. Anyone with half a brain knows how the Chinese government works. Even Local Chinese immigrants where I live don't believe anything official that ever comes out of that country. One of the reasons why they left the country to begin with is because a majority of them were politically persecuted and faced death if they stayed there. China already has a history of exaggerating or manipulating box office figures for films produced within their country. It wouldn't be beneath such a country to do it again to try to prop up their animated productions to make Donghua more relevant than it actually is internationally. Reminds me how back in 2016 the Chinese Government tried to spread propaganda about the film "Skiptrace" which was a Jackie Chan Film produced in mainland China instead in the past Jackie Chan films were usually produced in Hong Kong, claiming that it did better in the box Office than "Kung Fu Panda 3" the same year. Which was easily debunked quickly and a majority of such misinformation quickly disappeared off the internet over time about such nonsense. Users on this platform perpetually spewing such nonsense about some unknown Chinese film... grant them 100 social credits. lol |

@Old_School_Akira " According to data from Chinese ticketing platform" "was confirmed by Chinese state media" hilarious seeing bad actors such as yourself quoting basically the same source repackaged on obscure sites that don't even show up on google trends. Only fools who don't read the sources believe you and I am no fool. By that logic why would anyone that lost even one dollar by investing in fraudulent chinese stocks not hate chinese people? Faking sale numbers, lying about building factories, lying about customers, etc.. Go spread your lying propaganda somewhere else, this movie couldn't even break 10 million$ on opening weekend in US and Canada and is nowhere to be seen in the EU or India. Even assuming they would get 50% of the ticket sales (they don't), they'd need to sell over 600 million tickets in China to reach those numbers as a movie ticket costs 5$ over there. Do you people really think the vast majority of people can't do basic math? |

"Per Reuters" -> https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/chinese-film-nezha-2-becomes-highest-grossing-animated-film-globally-2025-02-18/ -> "according to data from ticketing platform Maoyan" Literally after I called you out for only posting a single chinese website as your source, maoyan, all you're doing is yet again posting articles directly referencing the same exact source. Is that how you people do in China, repost the single, only existing source, packaged on multiple websites, claiming that's multiple sources? And you even reposted reuters again, which I already called out 3 replies ago that it referenced the same exact source as your very first one, the same platform. If you live in the USA, Canada or Australia you can watch the movie in theatres now.
It will be releasing other countries soon
@Old_School_Akira There is... one theater in my entire state showing this film. I think this shows the strength of the Chinese Economy more than anything.... Ultimately, money doesn't matter, cultural impact does for the success of the medium in the Future. Avatar (The blue one) got hella money, but there was never a fanbase, no one cared afterward. I haven't seen anyone anywhere say anything about this movie except that it made a lot of money, and I like to think I'm in a fair few fandom spaces that it would impact. |

I just told you to appreciate other peoples promotion efforts and watch the wonderful, state approved show. Which is a normal thing we all do. Now proceed with the viewing of the Chinese movie I would argue it's propaganda under the pretense to promote something someone enjoys under extremely questionable and even almost obvious exaggerated box office figures. Maoyan already has a history of manipulating box office figures for films produced within their country. Even going to the extreme of sometimes creating faux Articles online and successfully managing to inject such false info into the western current events stratosphere. Such propaganda reeks of the CCP pushing it's state media to try to boost their animation medium that is extremely obscure anywhere else outside of China and throwing it in the faces of people who could really give a crap about how popular something might be in China. If Users want to appreciate "Ne Zha 2", this thread should have been posted in the "Ne Zha 2" sub-forum to begin with. I wonder how long till the moderators will actually take the time to move this thread where it should belong or even completely remove the thread all together since after briefly checking the OP already made a similar discussion in the "Ne Zha 2" sub-forums to begin with. lol Which speaks volumes about how much people really actually give a shit about some Chinese film being allegedly #1 on the MAL forums if the OP had to not only post a thread in the "Ne Zha 2" sub-forums but try to inject the exact same thread into the "Anime Discussion" sub-forum. lol Quite frankly in my opinion Chinese Donghua is not Japanese Anime so it shouldn't even be discussed in the "Anime Discussion" sub-forum. But even if MAL created a "Donghua Discussion" sub-forum it would likely be just as dead as the "Ne Zha 2" sub-forum. lol Lets be real here... "Ne Zha 2" is allegedly #1 when it comes to box office figure but on MAL it's score is N/A, ranking at #18140, with a popularity ranking at #13360, and only 1,266 members following this film. lol A grand totally of 129 MAL Users have even watched it with only 1,043 User actually planning to watch it. Not to mention 55 member are still actively watching this film as if they are all sitting in the theaters now simply camping there till they eventually complete it. lol |

I have absolutely no horse (or any other animal) in this race, but something like 200 million tickets sold doesn't sound so out there when you consider the whole Chinese population of 1.4 billion. The first Avatar movie, for example, is calculated to have sold ~100 million tickets in the US alone, which has a population of ~340 million, meaning 29% of the country watched it in theaters, compared to 14% of Chinese people watching this movie. Of course it's hard to compare the appeal of a major Hollywood blockbuster by a famous director with a Chinese animated movie, but considering that China allegedly doesn't let many foreign movies into their theaters, meaning less overall options of things to watch, it's not impossible that these numbers are correct. Now, I am saying people should 100% believe it and that there is no incentive for these numbers to be inflated? Of course not, we all know how these "closed off" countries work. It's always good to be critical of the things we read/hear, but we should also avoid making sweeping statements and claiming to know the truth when we are, at best, guessing. Despite what social media would have us believe, it's ok to not have an opinion or to be unsure, folks. |

@Old_School_Akira No but may take a look. Not the same series either, completely different Chinese 3D CGI film I think from memory. I don't remember the name. Some films I write down, some I don't. I think I saw it on Amazon Prime maybe. Or something else. Was like in the last 5 years or so. I haven't checked Netflix's catalogue in a while and even then I haven't checked their Chinese or Korean selection of shows or films either. I only watched the odd anime on Netflix. I have access to the services but I myself don't use them, family do for whatever else they care to watch. I haven't really even seen many 2D donghua anyway besides this comedy series up to what S3 or something. https://myanimelist.net/anime/49599/Ani_ni_Tsukeru_Kusuri_wa_Nai_5 This comedy series. |

Donghua will eventually surpass anime in popularity. People started watching anime because of its Japanese appeal. Sadly, anime companies let Americans into production committees, which westernized anime, and now the industry is collapsing because of it. I hope donghua companies don't make the same mistakes that anime companies did.
@ForgotEyeWasHere Huh? how is Anime "westernized"? Not counting stuff based on western properties, of course. The closest I can think of is mainstream Jump, but even then, stuff like Demon Slayer, JJK, CSM and DanDaDan has overt Japanese imagery. Anime as a whole still has a lot of fanservice, uniquely Japanese storytelling, influences... Even if there's stories set in the west or starring westerners, that's been the case since the 80's? If anything, Ne Zha 2 is more western than most Anime, everything I see from this movie just screams Dreamworks to me, which is fitting because China was surprised by how good and accurate Kung-fu Panda was, so they began investing on Animation to surpass it. This movie was only popular in China btw, while if anything, Anime is more popular and successful than it's ever been. And if anything, that western fame kept the medium from stagnating on shitt Isekai/Harem slop, even if that still exists, with more unique, good stuff being greenlit. |

I've not heard of the film, I concur with the opinion of @robertino129, that we can't trust the Chinese Government and Agencies to reliably and truthfully report there statistics. They are likely hoping to scam a bunch of investors to stupid to realize they are being duped. |

Huh? how is Anime "westernized"? Not counting stuff based on western properties, of course.
The closest I can think of is mainstream Jump, but even then, stuff like Demon Slayer, JJK, CSM and DanDaDan has overt Japanese imagery. Anime as a whole still has a lot of fanservice, uniquely Japanese storytelling, influences... Even if there's stories set in the west or starring westerners, that's been the case since the 80's?

This movie was only popular in China btw, while if anything, Anime is more popular and successful than it's ever been. And if anything, that western fame kept the medium from stagnating on shitt Isekai/Harem slop, even if that still exists, with more unique, good stuff being greenlit.

@Lucifrost I didn’t pay attention to any covid news so this statement doesn’t mean anything and has nothing to do with Ne zha. Also not a “he” Nezha 2 is about to be the first animated film in history to make $2 billion at the box office |

If inflation were adjusted for, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs would appear at the top of the chart with an adjusted gross of $2,297,000,000. Seems like they have done a lot, let's see how it rolls when it goes international and box office. I wish it was in viewers instead of prices. |

Donghua will eventually surpass anime in popularity. People started watching anime because of its Japanese appeal. Sadly, anime companies let Americans into production committees, which westernized anime, and now the industry is collapsing because of it. I hope donghua companies don't make the same mistakes that anime companies did.
@ForgotEyeWasHere Unfortunately, it’s not going to surpass anime any time soon. Donghua is more niche compared to anime and is also more prone to censorship. Even the most well known Donghua in the West, Link Click, isn’t even more popular than something like Oddtaxi or Sonny boy. You’ll never get a donghua like legend of the galactic heroes or psycho pass or any good anime like that. The CCP is super restrictive and you can easily take a gander at a list of banned anime in China to understand that. Keep in mind that most of Ne Zha’s box office numbers were from its home country. There’s a lot of people living in China. |

@robertino129 China is a massive country and this was realeased during lunar new year, when Chinese people take like 2 weeks off from work and have time to watch movies. I'm not denying this could be fixed, there's no concrete proof but it's likely knowing the CCP. However, besides the above, this was also realeased at a time when people are getting tired of Disney and other Hollywood slop. There is enough credibility to this movie's success. |

Yep, there are other Ne Zha entries too despite not being part of the same continuity which is loosely connected to begin with.
But nobody talks about that. Nobody talks about the story, the characters, the lore, the simple fact why this is marked as second movie, despite being the third (which is also not entirely correct) ect.
Many people are like "THIS MADE A LOT OF MONEY, IT MUST BE GOOD!"...like what's it about, is it potentially my cup of tea? Tell me that if you want me to be interested in this franchise.
The closest description was "It's a Christmas Movie". (By the logic that Die Hard is a christmas movie or what?)
One day I may be interested in that franchise, but right now I have zero drive to do so, especially when some people try to push it in my face.
@alshu This seems to be gaining a sorta cult status amongst animation fans in the same way a lot of the current Dreamworks output (Puss in Boots 2, Bad Guys, Wild Robot) and other things like Transformers ONE or Flow are getting. So far ive seen Saberspark and Schafrillas praising it, and apparently there's a lot of Yaoi and fujo stuff. Maybe it doesn't mean anything outside the cartoon neiche, but there is an audience alright. |
