That was great. We can now be sure that they're serious about animating all fights at the highest level. Fern is an absolute beast and Stark is a berserker. Hope Frieren will have something impressive to show next episode as well!

Man, the animation of the fight scenes is so damn good. Madhouse is so back.

I like how Stark and Fern fight differently. But they both still managed to defeat those demons at the same time. Frieren was right in entrusting them to defeating those demons.

I can't wait for Frieren vs. Aura's proper battle. It's going to be a treat.

This episode really showed both Fern and Stark's strength when it comes to battles. Of course, just like every other episode of Sousou no Frieren it did have good jokes'. My favourate joke so far was when stark was acting so brave. Other than shining the 2 sub-main characters, it did dive more into the arc.

All and all, it was a decent episode.

I have read the manga so what happens in the next episode is...

One battle episode of Frieren has more frames than jujutsu kaisen and chainsaw man combined, kek.
What a great quality this stuff has, no wonder ofc since it's the same director as Bocchi, but still, nice change from crappy shounens with battle scenes made in 3d with 3 fps.

I am speechless after watching the episode It was magnificent a perfectly crafted battle scene with Visual beauty. At the moment i realise this is going to be a masterpiece when I saw the look on Frieren face while standing in front of Auras army so calm and collective yet do Frightening at the same Time and the battle scene after that was so fucking beautiful and engaging i loved every second of this episode.i hope the next episode will be as good as this one.

Great animation in this episode

Linies technique is interesting. She can perfectly imitate martial arts but her attacks are weak because she doesn't train. Her best choice would probably be something like a spear that doesnt need much force, but she underestimated stark and used Eisen's technique to tease him.

Ferns trait is also interesting, kinda like Rudeus in mushoku tensei she casts faster, judging from demon guys reaction probably faster than most mages. I wonder if this is her talent or Freiren training her experimentally.
Aura probably didn't use her control spell because she knew Frieren has more mana lol

I forgot to mention last episode so to get it out of the way; HE SAID THE FUNNY!! Anyway, onto the episode itself.

Aura the Guillotine is no joke and that is clearly established and expressed not only with her army and magic but also the Scales of Obedience. The fact that not one person has defeated her in centuries is unfathomable, at best only a few have been able to resist it temporarily. Frieren is also a force to be reckoned with, her alone versus an undead army that can essentially keep coming back up no matter what. She’s very capable, but to what extent..?

That face Stark made with the blue background is definitely a worthy meme template hahaha and Fern just tossing her coat off of a wall was hilarious. The usage of first person perspective when Fern was attacked by Lugnër was absolutely brilliant, showing the sudden transition from an amusing moment to one of great tension and high stakes and also helping in feeling the weight and impact of a strike so quick and sudden. The ambush is on, Lugnër and Linnie versus Stark and Fern.

The flow of the fight, the intensity of the choreography, and the dynamic animation and magic effects, all done beautifully. Just like with the Solar dragon and Stark fight, this one went far and beyond for its adaptation of a fight sequence. The manga is great and all, but this is just something else. Not to mention the soundtrack helps so much with amplifying the fight by creating such an engaging and immersive ambience. This is the fruit of all of that training Fern had gone through, while not being the same level as Frieren in terms of mana and technique, she has the advantage of speed and overwhelming through sheer volume. Stark on the other hand, he isn’t looking too good. He’s not as the same skill level as Eisen but he has that raw determination and endurance to help. That lighting strike of his was sooo satisfying, and now it is established how capable Fern and Stark are on their own without the help of Frieren.

These animators must be smoking something because they went completely haywire with the visual side of things. Incredible episode and adaptation.
Have a lovely Frieren Friday :]

The animation! The visuals! The OST! 10/10 episode!
This certainly has become one of my favorite anime of all time... and it's just the 9th episode of the season! This series has the perfect balance of action, lore, "slice of life" and more importantly the "rule of cool" Thank god it turned out this way, at first I was afraid that this series would just end up as a sentimental, tear-jerker adventure with good animation and some few good action sequences, but this episode proved me wrong!

For me, this is probably the first show in probably ever that all the hype coming from source readers has fulfilled it's expectations. The whole aspect of slow world building, character writing and well paced story development has been executed is more than enough for me to think this is the best show of the season (probably even of the year) in my books. The sakuga both in action scenes along with the more mundane shots (like Stark putting his coat or Fern taking hers off) is just extra icing on the cake.

In other circumstances the delayed fight between Lügner & Fern might had been a tad contrived, but given that Lügner doesn't see anyone else but Frieren as a worthy opponent his overconfidence seems fitting to his character (reminds me of Dai vs Hadlar in the early prologue from Dragon Quest). That fight had probably the best framing shots in both static and full sakuga cuts of both Fern and Stark's fights.

Can't wait until next week to see the outcome of Aura vs Frieren.

Amazing episode as always. I'm waiting for the soundtrack to be released, anyone know of its release date? The OST during the battle (also played in the battle against Qual) is beautiful.

The fight between Linie and Stark was satisfying in its conclusion despite us not having a huge clash of axes to build up the hype, instead it was cut into little shorts of Linie continually striking Stark down, and Stark finding the strength to get back up. It was really smart to conclude it that way, and it also built up Stark's character as well because my man was fully intending to die for the cause! I'm really liking his character. The comedy scene at the church was so funny lol. Loved the zoomout. But back to the fight, it's - not exactly ironic, but just very well-written, that Linie's defeat was due to her own powers. She imitates the fighting styles she sees, but as someone so small and light as her, her blows aren't heavy, which is what the axe-wielding style is based on. She used it to her own advantage by creating her own techniques that couldn't be done with a heavier style, but ultimately it wasn't enough.

Fern and Lugner's battle was more about luck, of Lugner underestimating Fern so hard that he didn't finish her off immediately when he had the chance at the very beginning. But after the spellcasting started, both held up very well. Fern is inferior on all other accounts but speed, but speed is exactly what ended up deciding the outcome.

F Lugner for calling for backup as soon as he felt cornered, what a hypocrite lololol
I find it interesting that he was called arrogant and proud, I personally didn't find those qualities in him until it was pointed but it's very subtle. He has a very interesting characterisation. I would've loved to see more of him... but ultimately, he's not a cute girl so I can't say I feel too sad about his passing either. Linie's passing was semi-sympathetic, with the shot of her shocked face and reaching out towards the moon before dissipating, but I had to keep in mind that they don't actually feel human emotions. Though, if they are capable of arrogance, can they be capable of self-centered sorrow?

One more mention towards the animation of this episode, it feelsl like the last two episodes have been SMOOTH as heck. It's not detailed, but this show has made it clear that it doesn't need to be. 5/5.

Ah, I always complaining about a certain future arc when reading the manga. That future arc is sooo bad, I seem to forgot how much I hate this arc as well.

TBH, it's not like it's actually that bad (probably), but when you are reading a manga (or in this case, watching the anime adaptation of said manga) with the expectation of reading some stories like Ookami to Koushinryo (Spice and Wolf) but got a battle-shounen instead, you're bound to feel betrayed by the author. And that's how disapointing the manga is for me. This EP made me remember that feeling of disapointment over again.

Objectively speaking though: great animation, great script, great direction. However, no matter how much sakuga you put into an anime, a rotten story would still remain rotten in the end.

If I'm not mis-remebering, after this arc we will be back with the good old fantasy-adventure Sousou no Frieren had prior to this arc. That's only until the certain future arc I mention earlier sadly, then we'll back with the rotten battle-shounen-like development again.

PS:
This complain doesn't represent general opinion in any way. I loath battle-shounen with all my heart. I'm the one weirdo who actually hate battle-shounen like Dragonball and Kimetsu no Yaiba, and loved slow SoL like Shiroi-suna no Aquatope or Flying Witch to death. So, if battle-shounen is tolerable for you, it's highly likely that you might have different opinion regarding this arc (particularly this EP).

Absolute masterpiece of an episode - contender for episode of the year for sure. The way in which Fern fought Lügner was really impressive, Frieren's training has really worked even if she doesn't realise how powerful she is yet. And Stark just kept getting back up and fighting on, almost reminding me of a Boxer's mentality of getting up no matter what.

And it sets up Episode 10 for a great episode too.

Two demons destroyed by the resilience of Fern and Stark, and Frieren is yet to unleash her power...

What an episode, and a great episode directorial and storyboarding debut for Kouki Fujimoto, contributing to what could be one of the best animated episodes of the entire year. If you were to tell me that this anime would have possibly the best action scenes even with so many big name titles this year, I probably wouldn't have believed it. Madhouse is truly back. In the end, I still really liked Lugner and Linie, as they portrayed how purely evil the demons could be. I also really appreciated how both Fern and Stark learned so much from their respective teachers, and applied them in the battle to be victorious against two tough opponents. Evan Call continues to compose such beautiful music that elevated this episode immensely. Will we finally see Frieren versus Aura in the next episode, in all of its splendour? I hope so!

Pretty good.
They explained Aura's ability, so I'm expecting the conclusion of that fight next episode.
Stark's quite sturdy, he wasn't getting hit hard enough to die from those hits.
And Lügner was too arrogant, trying to get info on Frieren from someone like Fern

8:52 daaaamn this clothing animation. 10:43 Here too. They really went all-out on clothes this episode.
16:00 Does Balterie mean anything? All names in this have been in German so far but the translator doesn't bring up anything.
21:45 Erfassen means "capture" apparently.
22:21 Had to rewind this to see that Stark actually slashed her. I wish there was a slash sound. But still this is epic af
This is definitely top 5 most well-animated anime this year.
@Embient Balterie is a mistranslation in the crunchyroll subs it should be "arterie" which is the german word for artery

Correction: apperantly in the manga the attack is called "bluterie" which still is not a german word, maybe it is a combination of "blut" meaning blood and "erie" probably being the last few charachters of "arterie", so a blood artery? Either way I think artery has something to do with it because the attack looks like one.

This episode was both so beautiful and fluid, it's a wonder that we're getting this weekly from Madhouse as it never fails to adapt even the smallest points in the anime. Stark wearing his coat, Fern's hair, it's just all so well done. Pair that up with the incredible soundtrack during the action scenes, that's when you get a fucking great action sequence. On the otherside, you've got Frieren's fight that has been teasing us up for the past 2 episodes. I cannot get my mind over how great that will be compared to this. Fern's fight was done on a bigger scale with their long range magic attacks, while Stark's fight was much more about choreography (more on Linie's side), because we only saw him defending and use one attack near the end which looked way too damn cool.

This episode showed that no matter insane graphical technologies and flashy powerups got nothing on a well-written story with its simplistic yet breathtaking battle scenes. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that Linie and Lügner get defeated(?) by people they are underestimating simply because they ONLY acknowledge Frieren as worthy.

I started noticing the sound effects when Stark put on his jacket. Never realized how good they are tbh.
