I actually feel ep3 pacing is better than the first 2 episodes? But the ending didn't feel like an ending nor a cliffhanger, it just cuts off at a strange scene, lols.

The version I watched had some wonky subs, and, for the most part, it was okay... at least when it was Yaguchi talking, since he speaks so plainly. But I feel like I missed something with the whole Ryuuji reveal. Specifically when they're talking about how "liking" can save them but "loving" can hurt them. I dunno if anyone can shed some light on that? Or, might just need to see if any other sources have better translations.

Otherwise, I wish the series would show Yaguchi drawing a little more, rather than jumping from his realizations to finished products. I was kind of hoping to see some more technical aspects of drawing and not just discussion about what art means to each character.

Also, I have no idea what role Kuwana plays, but I really appreciate her appearance. Might look for a better avatar, but for now this will have to do.

I think Ooba-sensei appeared too early! And, her voice sounds wrong for her. She has a strong and rebellious personality. But, her voice actor sounds like she listens to whatever she's told to do. She doesn't have an artist's soul.

Kuwana also sounds all wrong. Her voice is too low. I know I don't like anime girls with high voices, but Kuwana needs a slightly higher voice to match her design. She hasn't spoken much, so I don't know if the actor can match her personality.

Yotasuke is my favourite character. It's clear from the criticism he gives to Yaguchi that Yotasuke is the kind of artist who can make amazing art that people love, but sadly, he himself doesn't. He and Yaguichi make a fantastic team. I love their chemistry. So far, the anime isn't doing a good job building it. But, maybe, it's still too early to judge?

Ooba-sensei gives out a lot of valuable art lessons. I hope the anime adapts them well. Like, I hope they do more than just have her speak out the lessons. I want to see well animated demonstrations. Or else, what is the point of having a story animated?

The part where Yaguchi made the bust look slightly like himself was so relatable. That is a problem that I have faced multiple times, and it's embarrassing.

I always assumed Yaguchi's trousers—or dungarees or whatever-it-is—would be blue like jeans, but they were orange here. lol. And, I thought Yotasuke's shirt would be green.

It was interesting to hear Yuka's and Yaguchi's conversation in Japanese. In English, some things just get lost in translation. Like, even the subtitles weren't quite accurate here.

Damn, all this confusion about Ryuji because the anime skipped 1 line, tho I still think there were enough hints. And it wasn't supposed to be a mystery/ reveal or anything, it was literally said the first time Ryuji appeared in the manga. It was much more... normal?

Anyway, ig this episode was on the better side and captured the spirit of the manga more. But the main issue of pacing still remains.

Finally the rhythm of the episode feels at the appropriate speed (without having any notion of how the events in the manga happen).

Ryuuji's revelation caught me by surprise, but because I forgot about her as the main character, if they gave clues, I didn't even notice them. Although the anime is about art, I hope that her situation will develop through several chapters,
Well, her dialogues and actions seem to indicate that she started a good psychological analysis of hers:
Why? and
How does she feel?

I liked how they handled Ryuuji's reveal. It wasn't awkward or brought up in exposition, but seemed like a sincere conversation between two friends. We didn't know why something felt off about him because that wasn't relevant until now. The fact that he got rejected over it, and a friend tried to comfort him, those are real things for transgender people. They want to be loved by the people they like, to be accepted as part of the "normal" world without having to lie.

Not gonna lie, this series has had me on the verge of tears since episode 2. That scene with Yaguchi's mother was a work of beauty. The scene with Ryuuji in this episode hit hard. Now, will you people stop cutting onions and get the heck out of my house? I'm trying to watch anime, darn it!

It might have been a weird translation, but I'm thinking the context is about how we choose to express ourselves. Ryuuji "likes" men, wants to find a man who she can be happy with. However, because she also "loves" identifying as female, it creates a weird kind of barrier between her and the "normal" world. So, the thing that Ryuuji likes will "save" her from the misery of possibly being alone, and the thing she "loves" is only hindering her ability to have the thing she likes.

That is my interpretation, anyways.

First of all: Yuka wears the male uniform jacket, their name is Ryuuji (a pretty masculine name in Japan as far as I know) and episode 1 already featured some dialogues between Yuka and Yaguchi that implied there was something more regarding Yuka's persona.

I don’t think Ryuuji really thinks of himself as transgender. He clearly says he‘s a boy that wants to dress up like a cute girl. And probably his sexuality is bi or gay.
As a girl who liked to dress up like a boy i can totally understand him. It‘s sad to hear that some people will drop the show only because of „the trap“ and „gay shit“ as they call it.

Anyway great episode! I liked the artworks of the braided guy and also loved the explanations of compositions.

This continues to be a bad adaptation. Not visually stunning and a pace that is way too fast. I can’t connect to any of the characters or their struggles because we have hardly built them up. The trans reveal would have been much more of a bombshell if Ryuuji was given more screentime and we actually got to know their character. I can tell the source material is good because I can sense a that a good story is in here, but this anime is not good. I’ll give it another episode and go from there.

heavy emphasis to Yuka's sexuality/gender struggles! i think that's the highlight of this episode...
but Yaguchi just needs wash away his self undervaluing and just go with passion with art!
who knows, maybe in the oil art competition he might get rank 1, because art is very complex and judges have very surprising unexpected outcomes!
5/5.

God dammit ryuji/yuka is one of the worse takes on trans women I've ever seen in media

I don't think Ryuji is a trans woman, they're just a boy who dresses like a girl, since Yaguchi described them as a transvestite which is just a person who cross dresses. I've seen people dsecribe them as genderqueer, which could also make sense but I don't think that they are a trans woman.

It's a little unclear at the moment, but when the anime adapts more of the manga the confusion around Ryuji's identity should clear up. From my understanding Ryuji is still figuring things out.

Honestly the visuals and OSTs here aren't what I was expecting. They're just not giving what they were supposed to give. I hope they improve as the anime goes on.

I don't quite remember Yaguchi referring to Ryuji as a derogatory term in the manga. Either my memory is a little off or the director added that into the script, but why? I don't understand the purpose. It wasn't like they were using it to create an example of transphobia, thats just...how they choose to describe her. It's very odd to me. (And for those calling Ryuji a "trap," I would hold off on that claim. The series will dig into her character a lot more later on which should give everyone a better sense of who she is.)

Also what's up with the pacing? I think we skipped bits and pieces of the manga in this episode.

It's pretty decent so far, but it could be better. Although I went into this with very high expectations since the manga was done so well. We'll see how it goes ig.

We're now on prep school, with Yatora and Yuka on separate classes. Yatora has already found some acquaintances in the name of Yotasuke and Haruka, and wow this three can make of a good chemistry. I find it really compelling that even though Yatora is being criticized (in a healthy way) by Oba-sensei, she and even others doesn't give him the answers, and just like me watching in the screen, he is still finding and realizing that answer on why his art is somehow lacking. That is a good thing to note while I was watching.

And then we have Yuka problems again with their gender. I cannot fully express how I feel to the man that hurt Yuka's feelings, one hint I can say is "fuck you". But I can tell that it's another day, another heartbreak again for Ryuji, which suffers from the confines of being a "transgender". She deserves some love though, she's a cutie and a good friend, but unfortunately when it comes to love, she can't have that yet because they were once a boy.

Another good episode from BP, the anime still can't convince my will to do arts, but hey I am with Yatora in his journey, and that's a good thing. Now I'm thinking if Yotasuke is a trap as well, because of the way he's acting to Yaguchi...(me proceeding to look into the wikis) well...what a way to confirm it to me.

I assumed that Ryuji was at least presenting as female based on chapter 20, as opposed to just being a feminine guy. Again, it doesn't seem very clear to me, as it's implied Ryuji is only presenting this way to make liking guys easier? Anyone could probably argue either way (that Ryuji identifies as male or female). I just personally interpreted that chapter to mean Ryuji is trans or genderqueer in some way. Who knows.
