What was the point chief getting killed off...? Like yes he wasn't needed past this point but still. And it was so predictable that he was gonna die when he went to sleep. Like why? Was he really that old? Did the fight do damage where maybe he should've stayed up? Was there another underlying condition? It was predictable and very unceremonious. Although the messages and symbolism were very wholesome and Chief got Joe out of his funk. But they basically used an hour 30 of runtime on a detour... Just to get joe back on his feet. I have really complicated feelings about these past 4 eps. Was someone just trying to fulfill their Texas/Mexico/Western fetish? And I get that Megalobox S1 started with a side story too but those characters stuck around and they're still relevant. Like the show has been on for a month now and we still know nothing about exactly why Joe left after season 1. My original take was that this season 2 was not needed and I'm hoping that I'm wrong but how this arc ended was a bit of a yellow flag. |

Dukino said: I still don't get how Chief would passed an in guessing they left it ambiguous on purpose. I'mThat was extremely bittersweet. Chief wins the tournament saving the immigrants from having to leave their new home but he dies that same night. Its like Chief was holding on long enough to save those he cared about, then once they were safe he passed. Very shocking and sad I definitely didn't see that coming. Chief was such a likeable guy and so inspirational for Joe. Chief really helped save Joe in a way, showed him there's still things to fight for. Awesome match with Chief beating that prick up, rocky waters to start but Chief took over and ended it. I'm excited now to see Joe return to his old life so we can see how things have changed there. This rebirth arc for Joe is now complete, time to see where it will go. Just glad the other guy that wanted the land didn't assassinate him or something. This show has been good at making twists since its first season and I can't wait to see where it will go from here. |

I don't really actively participate in episode discussions but when I do, it's because the episode is too great. And this episode was one of those episodes. This episode was both really melancholic and inspiring at the same time. This episode alone made me glad I watched this anime. I hope Joe can finally properly face his past and move on. |

For anyone asking how he died, not only he was an inmigrant and had a rough life, he mentioned to Joe that he also took drugs and went into heavy depression after his son died when they were passing the borders. Put all of that into a guy who wasn´t in the greatest shape and participated into arranged fights were he was supposed to lose (meaning he took more hits in the head than normally) and then he even went to the fire in order to extinguish it. Dude had a rough life and he was getting hit behind the head, which has caused deaths in real life. That´s why those moves are always illegal. In 4 episodes this second season had a much better storytelling and characterization than the first one, by a lot. If the first Megalobox was the body of the series, Nomad is definitively the soul. Chief was such a good character and his arc ended up in an amazing way. I was so happy when he decided to hug Joe, since those words and kindness as a human will have an impact on his life and return to the ring. I´m not going to lie, S1 Joe felt kinda edgy in some moments, but now the character feels a lot more human and his development has been great. |

Man tears were shed. Goodbye to the manliest man this series could have ever introduced. My man Chief kept his word and now can rest in peace while finally joining his son and wife in the afterlife. Seriously, after the disappointment I had with season 1, I can't believe Megalo Box's writing managed to touch my heart in such profound way. Chief's character felt so human... I'm so moved right now. Another 5/5 episode and perfect conclusion for this first arc. Chief was the catalyst for Joe to start redeeming himself and now his Colibrí-Gear was left for Joe to use. Let's hope he can honor such meaningful gift properly. |

Belsel said: Ok, I'm taking your point and I appreciate the in-depth explanation on how possible death from injury is. Now I understand Chief's lucidity the night before and that he doesn't have many symptoms despite the severity. In addition, it is true that in Megalobox this can be even more possible, so now I understand the situation better. Thanks for helping me with all your opinions. Im happy now, although I would have liked that everything had not happened so fast, and had heard a word more from Joe or the child's mother about it, but anyways, its ok. I can say this is even better than first season and for me is a 20/10 rating. See you around. I can kind of understand a point of view that it was suicide. Especially considering that he gave Marla his savings the night of the party. But I think it's far more likely it was simply due to injuries. Strikes to the back of the head are illegal in any sanctioned combat sport because of how deadly they are. Too many hit's (especially from a guy the size/power of who he was fighting) can easily cause death or a vegetative state. Not every injury is the same so not every person will experience severe pain/symptoms right away. It's very likely that he died in his sleep from the injuries. I also don't really see a reason as to why he would commit suicide. He was all about not giving up, keep fighting, etc. If he was the type to give up, he probably would have done it along time ago especially since his family is gone. He was the chief of the immigrants and loved them like family, so I don't see him leaving them behind like that. We just have to wait and see if his death is expanded upon next episode. --------------------------------------------------------------- OT: Great episode. Really sad to see chief go, would've loved to see round 2 with Joe. I really like the different atmosphere of season 2 in comparison to season 1. |

The truth is that I didn't see reasons for the suicide either, but I didn't quite understand how she had died either. I didn't know that blows to the back of the neck could be so deadly. The only reason for suicide that occurred to me was an unresolved grief and feelings of guilt (which would have resurfaced), but it also seemed difficult to me, since many more factors influence suicide, and on the other hand it seemed clear that Chief wanted to continue living, as you have pointed out. Maybe not to kill himself, but I do think Chief was still grieving. |

Fuck man, I knew it was coming the moment he said he was afraid to sleep, I got my hopes up when he said he wanted to fight Joe again for real, but... R.I.P. Even in the fight, I already had a bad feeling, when he was blacking out, well I thought we avoided death. Even though we only met him for 4 episodes, he is definitely one of the best characters of the show, as much as I didn't want him to die, his character ended perfectly. It's now Joe's turn to face his demons, it's time for him to go back home. I do hope we see Marla again, even Mio as he has grown, respect to that one kid though, they're dicks but he seemed to at least saw Mio to be a real friend. Man, that was a fantastic episode. Really looking forward to the next one. |

Seems pretty obvious Chief had a stroke, some kind of intracranial hemorrhage and/or infarctus, the causes were there and pretty obvious (he took a massive hit to the back of his head once by a powerful guy gear enhanced, then consecutives other smaller blows later on) and the symptoms too, his eyesight was getting bad, he was bleeding, he felt lightheaded, said he was afraid to go sleeping... He kept stressing he was an old guy so you can assume he was a megalo boxer from some time, we might forget it but contact sports often leave some sportsmen in a rather poor state after their career is over, that thing is well document for american football or rugby https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concussions_in_American_football https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/55360214 So in a sports like boxing where contact is litterally the point, in a post apcalyptic setting where boxing is made even more dangerous by being machine enhanced and rules are rather loosely enforced in underground fights... yeah this kind of outcome is a logical one, one that was a little bit ignored in the first season of Megalo Box but rightly made a comeback this season. From a symbolic point of view, as a loosely remake of Ashita no Joe it also helps Megalo Box feels closer to his original counterpart, I firmly expected Yuri to die at the end of season 1, that was the logical outcome after following through Ashita no Joe storybeats thus far, all the writing lead to that and they somehow shy away from it, Chief kinda represent that Rikishii moment for Joe now (combined with Yuri who still died as a boxer one could say) or even the moment Joe is able to move forward from the past events that happened and for which he felt responsible (the small nudge between the kid throwing a tantrum at Chief and Sachio blaming Joe for Nanbu's death being the eye opening moment for him) It was a super packed and emotional arc anyway, one that somehow will feel completely disconnected from the overall series I assume, before and after, and that you would expect to see in some kind of spin-off these days seeing how it was a very personal and intimistic break for Joe in the life of people whose lifes were dramatically changed after being inspired by him |

In all honesty, this episode was bittersweet, in the fact that while Chief does pass away, ultimately he has achieved what he wanted to do, which was to allow the immigrants to own the land. He sacrificed himself to do so and multiple times throughout the episode, it was implied that he would die, or take serious injury, first in the fight scene where it seems like he is close to blacking out, then later when he gives the money to Carla and mentions that he is afraid of going to sleep. All these point to him accepting his fate and preparing himself. Especially the hug with Joe, that cemented it. The symbolism of the hummingbird plays a major part in Mio's decision to return to the immigrants and make the brave decision of leaving the punks alone. This show is a masterpiece and I can only hope it gets the recognition it truly deserves. |

Actually I think that Belsel is right. Chief commited suicide, it's said subtly by Marla asking "why ?" exactly at 22:36 of the episod. We saw during 2 episodes that it was a man torn by regrets about his son. He protected the people, his second family. Now he can find peace without worrying about those in life and join his wife and son. |

ElGoblino said: He died because of his injuries, as simple as that. Most likely hematoma caused by head trauma. It's called a lucid interval. A person will have no other complaint other than feeling a bit light-headed. Went to sleep the night and then gone by the morning. Probably won't happen in a normal boxing fight, but this is megalo boxing with upper limb augmentations, so it's quite possible. That's most likely the whole reason why they emphasize those hits to the back of the head (brain) so much. As I said it's a trauma from which you don't really feel much pain but it's actually very severe, him saying he's afraid to fall asleep points towards that as well. Also, what hospitalization are you expecting for someone like him? Is that why they sometimes say that you shouldn't sleep right away after having a concussion? MosleyEnthusiast said: chief dying is the best thing to happen to the show so far lmao It's definitely going to give Joe that extra push to strengthen his resolve and return to the ring. |

He could of committed suicide but I think if the writers were going that route that would of made it a bit more obvious. Atlos said: arimaxmem said: how did the chief die? For now it seems like he's more or less at peace with everything, and maybe that's because - in general - Chief appeared to be at peace with this outcome too. But this is another major person in his life whose died. So, this could end up being a slipperly slope. Maybe it'll stop after this arc, but I'm just wary about what we have left with another 9 episodes to cover. That being said, I also get the impression that Chief died due to the injuries sustained from the match. We didn't see every single second of the fight, so it's fair to assume much of the cheating and illegal moves were probably offscreened. He more than likely took more damage than even we, the audience, saw. His general behavior from the start of the final round up until his death implies he was more or less aware of what was about to happen. Even before he won his vision was getting hazy and he was sweating like crazy, I'm sure his old age wasn't helping the outcome either. To that degree, you could probably make a case for the years of damage from alcohol as well as those pills that Joe was taking didn't help him being in peak condition. Chief mentions having firsthand knowledge of not mixing alcohol and drugs, and then later Marla mentions she was there when he was coming off it all and remembering how bad it was. I just think he wasn't as sturdy as some people might think, despite his size. No matter how big you are, it just takes one bad hit in the wrong place to do irreversible damage, and Chief took far more than one. Arguably it's what he wanted anyway, as he was eager to reunite with his family. He seemed like he was mostly just glad that he was able to leave his people with a place to call home before he could move on. At this point, all my speculation is getting out of hand, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was slowly dying from the heartache anyway. He mentions this episode that his family on the otherside must've asked God to give him a "little more time." Enough time to fulfill what he felt was his duty so that he could rest in peace perhaps? Anyway, I'm looking forward to what is next for Joe. But how can you explain that he was perfectly fine during the party? Do you know what are serious injuries that can cause you to die the next morning? If so, Chief would have had to be hospitalized practically at the end of the fight. Sudden death, while possible, is highly unlikely. On the other hand, although drugs and alcohol have deteriorated his condition, he is well enough to fight at that level and lead an apparently normal life ... that could not explain a sudden death, which as I say, is very unlikely. In any case, the most important fact is that he is perfectly fine after the fight and during the night at the party. His death can only be explained by suicide or a sudden death perhaps caused by an internal cerebral hemorrhage or a sudden heart attack, but as I say, it would be very unlikely, and just the next day (normally this could happen suddenly some days later o directly in the combat, which would have logically led him to lose the fight and be immediately hospitalized). I still don't believe that anyone is talking about the mystery of Chief's death, staying only for the most obvious and superficial reasons. Nobody is struck by the reactions of the characters after his death and how quickly everything happens? Yea, my first thought was some this white jacket guy making some kind of revenge. But kinda doesn't feel like its the case narrative-wise. Suicide scheme feels alright. Especially last scenes when we see Chief, he felt like he achievied everything he wanted in his life. Still being chased by the past, he done his fight for people who he loved. Kinda like "im perfectly fine now, its time to go". Well that was the Chef arc. It was short, yet it rly feels like we got to see all the shine from his character that was needed. Pacing was awesome, We had plenty of time to explore his personality and sad past. Enough time to enjoy his fighting style, defensive, yet ready to bite back anytime. Such a great extension of his personality, like a bulwark protecting his people. His boxing was also representing that. We gonna carry that weight. And walk the path chief carved for us. Absolutely 10/10 arc. Hope anime will keep up with this new narration, style and quality. |

My friend, I couldn't agree with you more. You wrote exactly the right words about what I felt. That's what I thought about suicide. Later some users explained to me that death from serious injuries was really possible and I understood that. I totallt love this season, is gold. I am also surprised by a lot good animes this spring season. |

Can we not have a good happy ending for this episode? Nah as much as I'm sad about Chief's death, the influence he has will continue to live on. Man Megalo box never disappoints |
