why is it called 'Blame' ?

It's meant to be onomatopoeia representing the sound of firing a gun (blam) but english education in Japan isn't exactly top notch.
Yeah, the actual Katakana for the title is ブラム or Blam. Not sure why he added an e to it to make the official English title Blame. Katakana for blame is ブレイム.

This film is very scientific correct, most of it is not fiction at all. But anyone think this is cyberpunk must have a second thought, this is actually post-cyber settings. Now it is network-human/half-machine-AI-atomic dispenser and accumulator.

A masterpiece.
Give us the part 2 already
You will soon learn that a heart that choose to exist, even in a life filled with pain, will one day allow us to meet again.
With the world's blessings, we will meet again and again, forever returning to the homeworld we've yet to see.
Many, many times.

Cibo is my waifu

Ehrm, sorry. Loved the manga and just watched the movie. It's great. It's like a cross between Mad Max and The Matrix. I think it's good that they focused on a single arc from the manga and made electro-fisher the protagonists with Killy just passing through (Fury Road, anyone?). 3DCG looked surprisingly good, highly detailed too.

Also Cibo is voiced by Kana Hanazawa. If you prefer subs, that's pretty much all you need to know about this movie (actually the VAs in this are all great).

I enjoyed the animation and watched it problem free through netlflix so I gave it an extremely generous 7/10 where a 6/10 is probably about as high as it really should be rated.

Thought it needed to have the back story animated to actually care about it.

Maybe if I had read the manga it would have given me a care factor but I can't see that being a legitimate requirement to enjoying an anime.

As a CG asset creator myself I see a different film from what everyone else sees. I guess ignorance is bliss, but this was a bad Anime. The plot felt phoned in and boring. There wasn't enough characterization for us to care about anyone which made the stakes, losses, and suspense feel hollow. The only two places that managed to rise above average were sound-design and possibly overall art direction as long as you ignore animation.

The animation was absolutely horrid and was at best college level for body movement and amateur hobbyist level for the facial animations and any movement that couldn't be hidden behind walk cycles or quick-cuts.

For a comparison of what should be "Expected" from CGI animation of this nature, look up "Paths of hate." Also, there was an obnoxious amount of reused assets with no attention or care given to character design and distinction. From someone who is familiar with what kind of effort in asset creation and animation it takes for a given result - this was a severely under-developed and lazy project. Voice-overs of stills from the Manga would have had a better result.

[Edit]

I gave it a 4/10 which is honestly higher than it deserves but the VA work was solid and story boarding wasn't that bad. Sound design carries it for me and there is one or two action sequences that showed at least some care from the producers. Everything else dragged it down. Biggest offender were facial animations. If you know anything about animation there is zero reason for the facial animations to look that bad. Here is your reminder that toy story was made in 1995 - 22 years ago. No excuse.

I knew this wouldn't be nearly as good as manga because of the runtime but this was still disappointing. The movie is just a cheap action flick that fails to capture what made the source material great in the first place. Killy's personality is also nowhere as robotic the movie made it seem to be.

The situation of the characters at the end of the movie was literally identical to their situation at the start. A bunch of stuff went down, and they are still holed up in a new haven with presumably limited supplies and Killy buggered off to do whatever. I guess they at least have sexy-robo scientist now that which is a bit of a plus. Basically the whole thing felt like an extended prologue to the real story.

Not really? They went from expecting to starve to death within a month, to being happy they can survive a few more months with the new rations, to having enough supplies in their new home to sustain two more generations. They have an entire level to themselves and all the resources within, plus Cibo actually has the knowledge to construct new equipment to replace all the stuff they've lost over the years.

The only real problem they have is the threat of inbreeding, considering how they only had enough surviving villagers to fit in one freight elevator, but even that can be avoided with careful social engineering.

The main character is so disturbing and bothers me so much. Yeah I get the reason behind it, but this character just feels ... dead? XD Not not-a-human-being-roboter-dead-and-emotionless, just ... dead.
I didn't read the manga, but I'm glad that there is another narrative voice, after reading the other posts.
Good animation and art, even CGI looks good, and interesting story. The atmosphere is great even I'm not so into cyberpunk. 8-9/10, didn't decide yet.

It was a good movie. Not the best one, but still very good.

I have read just the very beginning of the manga, but since the movie was coming i decided to wait for it. I know a good amount of things were changed, but Sidonia also had some things changed in the anime and i actually liked those changes more than the original (the anime had a better pace early, but the manga is still awesome).

Dub was bland, should've tried sub. Characters had no personality, focusing on them bored me to tears. I love the manga and this is NOTHING like it. This is just a wild extension of a short chapter in the early-manga. Killy isn't an emotionless posing terminator. The manga has like no drama and is just constant action and tragedy inter-mixed with slow atmospheric exploration.

FAILED ADAPTATION. Berserk 2016 is better surprisingly, while it may not look good at least it's interesting.

This is a sad day...

Well compared to the ova episodes this movie sure was impressive! Even though I'm not a too huge fan of CGI anime, I must say that the job was impressively done here, especially in the environment!

All in all a great movie with lovely progression and interesting characters, a good half closed ending to give room for a possible sequel at any time, but closed enough to have a great finished feeling after watching this.

So all in all a very good movie I must say with a great setting!

@Khaled1323: This movie is pretty self-contained, but if you like it definitely check out the source manga because it explains the world more properly and only a selected small part of the plot was adapted.

Alternatively, you can check out Blame! ONA if you want to be confused even more

Re: this movie and its animation, what I found kind of weird is that fps jump up and down in various scenes.

Thanks for the interesting perspective! But I think if this movie had the level of CG animation Paths of Hate had it would probably cost more than the latest Transformers movie (which is ironic, probably). This time animation was uneven even during parts of the same movie... But hell, I'm just happy to get SOME adaptation of Blame! (same with Berserk, really). I also agree that sound design was very good (Gravitational Beam Emitter sounded pretty much how I imagined!)

Not convinced that following the paths of hate style would give a good result, for one I think the the environments in blame look already better than PoH it just lacks a bit of depth. But I do agree that the characters do seem to lack some stylistic definition. But this was possible for PoH since it basicly used minimal animation and only used 4 high quality assets (plane 1, plane 2 (half the work when reusing P1 as base) and the torsos of the two pilots). And this only for a couple of minutes, because the style breaks down completely after the plane collision where it is pure flat 3D with the monochromatic look. And I don't think the change of style was without reason, since the stylized look wouldn't be as easy to transcribe in higher levels of motion.

There is still work to do on the characters of blame, but I don't think PoH would be the way to go. It works for PoH because it's static, but the moments you start to animate more organic stuff it feels stiff and falls flat. A good visual representation of it would be the borderlands style in motion. It looks stylized and consistent, but the stifness and static textures break the immersion. For Blame you could start by stylizing the base models a bit more, but the only way you could completely remedy it is by adding a layer off stylization through added lineart that is drawn digitally over it to accentuate the style. That the lines dissapear depending on the expressions and lighting.

Problem is that that would be an incredible amount of work, and would take away a big part of the reason of making it in CG. But until they're able to integrate good texture blending/morphing technology or just stronger CG this direction does seem to be the way forward. And come on how dare you say this is lazy work, without taking into account the size of the staff and the resources. I could understand if you said that it was misguided project, but saying they were lazy just seems arrogant.

They clearly changed the story.

I remember the manga being a lot more confusing and even rereading did't actually help me understand wtf i am reading.

Nihei's art is often simply confusing and 'mysterious'. Also Killy was a different character in the manga.

I enjoyed this immensel. The action, backgrounds and designs were gorgeous and it very much captured the Nihei feel. About the only ing that felt 'wrong' was that there was a lot of dialogue. If you've read the manga, you'll know that Blame is one quiet story. Not much talking there.

I like that they adapted only one arc. I hope this means we get a sequel soon!!

I wanna buy the movie on BD, but no release date is announced, apparently?

Anyway, it's probably safe to assume that in the end Zuru married Stezo, they had a kid who then had the granddaughter that told this story. I sort of feel sorry for Stezo though, because as per her granddaughter, Zuru apparently never shut up about her crush Killy until she died, married status notwithstanding.

Also, thing I found just the tiniest bit disappointing is that in the manga Killy clearly bleeds almost like a human, but in the movie when his arm got lopped off by Sanakan, there's practically no blood. That alone kinda ruins his claim of being human, so damn dem censors. Then again, his lifting huge boulders like they were made of paper and generally every second of him being badass was awesome, so I'm willing to overlook small stuff.

Why it has to be so bad? 3D animation almost always produce bad results, but in this movie it was painful to watch. Don't know why they done that, but it looks like all 3D scenes run at 8fps, resulting in unpleasant feeling that I watch a 3D game running on old hardware. I forced myself to watch, but can bear only 26 minutes of this torture. Besides that, as it already were pointed by people itt, expanded Electro-fishers story feeled unnecessary and artificial. I personally couldn't care less about them, knowing that
If they wanted to show cute faces, they could just adapt Blame! Gakuen or something. 0/10

This is the kind of movie where you'll only get the maximum enjoyment watching if you know about the source material. There's no proper introduction of things and they're saying terminologies that did not have a proper explanation as to what they mean.

Killy's deafening and Tae in my language literally means shit.
