You can't teach an unmotivated group, it's just not going to happen unless the group dynamic changes (such as the unmotivated people leaving the group or the motivated minority somehow taking charge).

His smile is probably one related to feelings of exasperation or exhaustion. He's probably dealt with high schoolers not giving two cents or causing drama in the band year after year, and is disenchanted with the whole thing (probably after early years of being highly enthusiastic and eager to teach; this type of thing is extremely taxing and will suck your soul dry). He's willing to teach (and is obviously knows what's what, easily pointing things out with only a glance or a few minutes of listening), but this is his condition: give a shit and make an effort, or don't waste my time. It's a type of emotion that can only be experienced after repeated dealings with unmotivated groups who only complain and doesn't want to try, so it's understandable why it's hard to understand his smile or where he's coming from. Working with people who don't care is one of the hardest things to do when it comes to human interaction.

Actually, how people saw this episode in MAL also shows this split. There's a lot that went on here and it's quite a roller coaster ride, but you won't be able to relate or be drawn into the story if you've never dealt with shitty, negative people dragging a whole group down (and also on the condition that you were one of the few who wanted to make magic happen).

If you've been in great groups already where 80% of the people are making an effort and it's actually the 20% gets pruned or gets left behind, or have been spoon-fed by great leaderships and seniors that left awesome clubs, etc. then you probably will find this episode slow and boring, missing all the internal stuff, you know, the words between the lines.

I like how the advisor told them straightforwardly that they were bad and weren't ready for instructions
probably he already experienced in the past that his instructions won't work unless they have self-motivation
Also, Asuka is still the best

I'm so unexpectedly happy with this anime! Just caught up today and my goodness it's exceeded my expectations by so much; was thinking this is going to be another cute girls doing cute things anime (which is enjoyable) but it's starting to look like so much more...

The interaction and scripting is fucking amazing for what it is. It feels very much like I'm peeking into a natural conversation. The topics don't feel forced, the comedy isn't over exaggerated, things are not all explained and spoon-fed to the audience in one go, the voice actors manage to keep up the tension, the characters are slowly getting fleshed out by their interacting with each other, I'm still interested in finding out more about everyone. BRILLIANT! Also I really enjoy the realistic nature of the problems they face, both as a group and individually.

I guess my only complaint so far is the plastic moe faces, but it's KyoAni I suppose... I would have liked more subtly expressive faces, especially considering they have the budget for it. The animation is beautiful as expected, I love the close-ups of all the fingering (pun 200% intended).

80% making the effort to do the minimal amount of thinking required. 20% griping about how what the teacher did makes no sense and how a SoL anime is too much like real life.

This series is such a pleasant surprise so far.

And I have to love Asuka! <3

I think sensei is being reasonable and realistic - the band members have no reason to complain, they're just fooling around. The teacher is very human and a character I quite like: he's not verbally abusing them, he's just laying down his conditions and giving them chances, and will undoubtedly put in the effort if the band members do. Proof is that he showed up when the president requested him, no excuses or anything. It's nothing more, nothing less. He's not going to force unenthusiastic, half-assed students to do what they don't want to, and he won't yell at them or tell them to quit because that's neither his right or responsibility. It would only make the band lose more members as well and make unnecessary trouble. The vibe I get from him is "You can't succeed without hard work," and that talk is cheap.

And what I love about this series is that there are characters that undoubtedly some people will dislike. I hate to sound preachy, but that's life. For an SoL, Hibike! has a huge variety of characters that, while moe, have a splash of realism - the fun/energetic people, the whiners, the lazers, the kind, the enthusiastic beginners, the resigned ones, the pessimists, the optimists, the intermediaries, the leaders, etc. while still adhering to KyoAni and SoL tropes.

So far my only complaint is that it wouldn't hurt to have more male characters and maybe a ray of hope/foreshadowing for a good resolution. I'm thinking they will solve things by next week (or will they?), and hopefully we get to see more development with Kousaka. I was honestly surprised that her display of emotion didn't inspire/incite anything in the others characters or trigger any big reaction in even the MC. That probably broke another SoL trope and also established her character in the eyes of the others which was nice.

I tend to like slower moving shows (as long as there is some good plot/ character development). I think a lot of subtle plot points were introduced here with sensi, the second years, and even little hints with Kousaka's sister (last week's episode hinted at that too).

And man, those horn players pissed me off! And then people had the nerve to complain? UGH.

Overall, I'm enjoying it. It makes me miss playing flute!

I'm not an expert when it comes to this band music so I can't see the band's fault in this episode (expect for some of this is playing so lazy and the other's thoughts)

But man, don't mess with Taki-sensei. I mean if he can frank you in a calm and smiley way, how about when he's mad? Welp, truth hurts anyways. Still, Asuka best girl

Really liking this series. :) Taki-sensei was right, though. Their band is still not yet fully prepared for their ensemble if they're lacking in unity and motivation to play. I can see so many band members who aren't taking this seriously since they're just fooling around, and yet some of the members had the nerve to complain to their teacher. Gotta hand it to Taki-sensei for being blunt and frank about the facts while keeping a calm demeanor and a smile on his face. He's just being reasonable.

Asuka is one of the best characters among the students. <3 But I like the 3 main gals too. Just need to know when is Reina gonna open up to them. She's still keeping her distance from them so far..

The drama is starting to gather momentum, with the seeds of a lot of conflicts being subtly sowed. I quite liked the episode, but in my opinion, Kyoani seems to be trying to sell the moe points of Midori and Hazuki a bit too much. It feels to me like a bit of a mismatch with the seriousness of the currently running plot of the unmotivated and missing second years. And Taki-sensei's outburst was quite surprising. Didn't think he had it in him to be able to make those cutting remarks with a wide smile on his face.
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to give out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.

Girl screaming at the end pretty much fits this episode perfectly.

When you're stuck with a bunch of stuck up shit stains who think their playing is on par with the second coming of Christ, and it turns out they couldn't play well enough if someone started slitting their families throats in front of them, you'd wanna scream your head off too.

The sensei is a complete dick. But a good dick. He's the dick that band needs, not the dick they deserve.

What's he going to teach them? They cant even play their own fucking instruments. Their a bunch of arrogant fuck-faces who cant play for shit, yet somehow think they're already good enough to play as an ensemble and entitled to play in the nationals. You cant teach people who are too prideful to learn.
And he is teaching them. He's teaching them that the only way they can learn to play as a group is to stop being douchebags and actually learn the basics of their instruments and sections.

The sensei, Reina, and of course Asuka had some cool moments, but the viewpoint of this episode is everywhere. Is there a core cast we're supposed to be focused on or not? Why are some scenes suggesting heavy story while others are so upfront about everything? I don't know what happened between here and episode 2, but I left this one confused. Sigh.

I was talking to a friend about this episode and he pointed out a key fact. This isn't a music class, it's a club. Clubs are ran by students in Japan (also for my H.S. in America) and the teachers serve as advisers.

Taki-sensei also gave pretty clear and easy instructions that the band chose not to follow. Get together. Practice. Start off with this extremely easy song!

Members of the band had to literally make the most minimum effort to perform it well as a group (even the complainers said the song was easy). They could've all eaten cake and served tea and just practiced for a few minutes each day, and they might've done a decent job. But essentially, no one but a handful practiced.

The club members aren't anywhere near meeting the adviser halfway. He really has no reason to teach a group of students who are unwilling to learn, in a club that they should be running.

Oh, how I feel sorry for Reina and her friends that actually do want to play in a music club that wants to laze around. They want to aim for the nationals while the club itself wants to laze around. Episode 2 even said this by saying how the club wanted to take the easy middle route of doing nothing while trying not to butt heads. They wanted results without work.

Those that think the sensei is an ass clearly haven't been in a music class, nor a band. They'll tear you a new one in whatever manner they see possible, even drilling you heavily on the scores over and over again. Calling him a jerk simply shows ignorance, even how pampered people are like those club members lazing around. I've been there knowing the stresses of how strict music is. The sheet music was a day 1 item that you learn. Look at the god damn sheet music! Just about easy as eating pie! I was mediocre as a trumpet player, though I know the pain Reina and the rest are going through......

This episode pissed me off with how lazy the students are. You can clearly hear the frustration in Reina's trumpet playing. Did you miss it? She shouted it out. Did you still miss it? Then you're dense as a rock. Not to degrade anyone, just that I'm as pissed off as Reina is right now. Stupid students wasting what I see as future-tech in their classroom by also trying to wear the band as some badge without effort. Wasteful and pathetic.

My respects to Reina, her friends, and the teachers. Even those that actually want to play.

But still, the drama was just weird. Or maybe only badly done. Kinda missed the impact and didn't felt too urgent for viewer. It simply didn't have the potential to drive this episode forward. Therefore the only highlight of this episode was Dvorak's Largo in the end.

Maybe that's because that is how most people deal with this kind conflict/drama in real life. Do you expect them to shout at each other and bawl their eyes out over the pettiest things like in Shigatsu?

What makes this show refreshing is they don't over-dramatize this kind of stuff... like finally we have some high-schoolers who know how to act mature. The seniors have dealt with this kind of conflict before so they know not to react obsessively against the lazy students. They are wise enough not to repeat the conflict that brought about the mass resignation from last year. The first years are frustrated but can't do anything about it seeing seniority is a huge thing in Japan and thus the most they can do is wait around or shout their frustration out like Reina.

Concert music is way, WAY different from anything you might relate it with. It's the ultimate group activity: it's not about how high skilled some members may be, it's all about the worst. You put a single amateur in any great philharmonic and he WILL destroy everything. There's zero margin for creativity and literally no starring potential (see why soloists are called soloists?).

Haha yeah, reminds me of when I was in middle school concert band, and two people in my grade decided to switch to different instruments in our last year. One played the bassoon, the other oboe. And holy crap did we sound terrible. The oboe would squeak at least once, if not more, during every piece we ever played. The bassoon just sounded odd, probably the player's fault, idk. I think it's already difficult for the club to be so diverse in experience, they've got people who've just started playing...for the bass instruments, it's kind of whatever, it won't bee too difficult to at learn to the notes and play on time since there's a lot of whole notes and quarter notes, but it takes longer to learn the instruments that play the melody. They have to deal with that, AND the unmotivated people. That sucks :/ Idk why people think the teacher is jerk, it's good to be realistic. My band teachers were like too.

Anyways, despite the, I guess, pretty realistic drama, it was still kind of on the boring side for me. I think it's because none of the characters are particularly interesting so far, though that can change, hopefully.

I've never played in a band, but I'm siding with the teacher here.

1. Trying to teach people who clearly aren't interested is like talking to a brick wall. It's a complete waste of his time and theirs.
2. They couldn't even play a piss-easy piece, what makes them think they can play a difficult one?
3. They have complete newbies in their midst. They need to get them up to speed first, before they can even THINK about participating in competitions.

If they had a lot of people, they could just kick the unmotivated people out. Unfortunately, they pretty much just barely have enough people and about half of the band is unmotivated. That includes ALL the horn players. No way they're going to be able to handle anyone leaving for any reason at all.

Props to the teacher for handling that calmly. If I were in his shoes I would've snapped.

I get your point and just for the record I generally like this anime and mood it sets yet I still think they should emphasize whole conflict a bit more. There were many things going on in this ep, and while every little scene (breathing instructions, chosing instruments, or hunting for correct toys) added depth to slice-of-life genre it kinda took away from overall plot gradation in the end. This episode felt kinda fractured due to it.

You know, I sort of understand what they are trying to do here. 'Superiority' of higher-class students is something of problem in Japan. But I think that real purpose of this drama is for Kumiko to finally realize how Reina had to feel about her 'not giving it its best' (or not caring about being the first) back in their middle school. It serves as further catalyst for their relation and gives them something they can relate with (as both of them are clearly disgusted by what 2nd years are doing). So I really hope they only postponed whole escalation of the conflict to next episode. Now what they need to do is vote-remove current prez as soon as possible as dragging this further would only prolong whole agony and as much as it could be interesting to watch in a way I doubt it would be healthy for the series to run in circles.

This is the only show I'm following for spring, maybe I might follow BBB but I'm vary about it. Overall love the tone of this show, definetely a re-skinned tamako love story. I think the main character is going to be an observer instead of a manipulator of the story which is just fine. Which is fine as I find her pleasantly relatable.

You are completely wrong.

Kumiko's issue is fundamentally not that she doesn't understand Reina's feelings. Her problem is that she doesn't understand what her own real feelings are.

Does she want to work hard to excel, or does she want to make friends and enjoy life? Honestly she doesn't know - and unlike the other band members she knows she doesn't know. That's the point of this conflict here, she can't honestly apologise to Reina because she's not sure she did anything wrong - or if Reina was wrong herself by having unrealistic expectations and not celebrating. Most of her choices have been to avoid choosing, and then to avoid the sort of intense effort Reina wants. (Trying to learn a new instrument instead of the one she knows she is good at, for example.)

I like this anime. It's very realistic and I always liked the slice of life genre.
Waah~~Sensei has a sharp tongue with a gentle way :P didn't expect that.
I don't think what he said was wrong, cause It's understandable that first you need to improve yourself and then try something more harder like playing together. Of course both require devotion, lot of practice and time. And~~wow~~I'm on my first year of studies and experiencing the same...well nearly the same. When we have a project to do then of course nobody has time or they come and try doing it without even understanding the lecture~~haaaaa

I expected that Kousaka will play wonderful(since she looked like she practised a lot)...and I really wanted to hear Kumiko play(cause I think that she loves the euph~ and can actually play wonderful too).

Can't wait for the next ep :)

This anime has become more realistic than Hyouka. Now that's scary.

I'm finding the pace a bit slow at the moment (please tell me that means 24 episodes - I need 2 cours of this), but even if it doesn't pick up, this is an excellent representation of real life. I don't know any horn player who practices. Ever. (My apologies to the horn players who actually do. Meeting you would be akin to a miracle).

The drama is coming together nicely - and Taki-sensei... haibo, that was bad. But good for him - let's have the band quake in fear!

I think I'm getting used to Kumiko's hair. It's not so... poofy, anymore. Also, Goto = sensitive type.

For next episode, need more:
[list][*] Shuichi
[*] music
[*] Reina talking to Kumiko (or vise versa)

... why is Tuesday so far away?

Best episode so far, actually the best so far in any series this season. The art was perfect as always, the pacing was great, the story was interesting. 1 and 2 were slightly underwhelming(though still good) but this was really good. The fact that every character is sufficiently developed is another point of praise for me.

MC is very likable as well. The teacher was also good for me- the only way to turn on that club would have been that.
