Great second episode, i am loving that, honestly!

I enjoyed a lot the introduction of Raphtalia, we also saw her past, and she is really adorable, at start she was really nervous, but quickly she saw how kind Naofumi is, this episode also developed their relationship, and i think she surpassed her trauma aswell, and i am glad episode finished!

So, shield hero is known by demi-humans for being kind to them, finally someone who dont ignore and understimate hero shield!

Looking foward to see Raphtalia and Naofumi to become strong!

I think you're ok. The slave dealer already explained that demi-humans aren't treated well in Melromarc. So the bullying part wasn't necessarily needed. It's why I think even though it's animated based on the manga, the manga has already done a good job of illustrating the most important parts of the light novel. Of course if you love interactions between characters, or more character development, the light novel is a good read. But people need to realize how costly it takes to produce an anime. Not everything you love will get animated, but the important story elements usually are. It's not like the anime has the production cost of say Naruto or One Piece. I'm all for comparisons, but to judge a episode based on missing elements rather than how an episode did in conveying and progressing the story withint a production budget for first time viewers is a bit sad.

Yeah this is why i get quite annoyed with Manga readers or Book readers when they have to compare everything and complain over everything , if your not biased you would know the anime cant adapt it all. I think it got the emotion conveyed quite well.

I will add however, the original web novel was quite long. And I expect the light novel to be longer since the author adds even more stuff to it and has other story arcs that weren't in the original web novel. What I hope is that they don't cover everything and end the 25th episode at a good arc. This way, a second season or third season would be more likely. Even if they ommit a couple things in the first volume, the amount of content in each volume is a ridiculous amount. The first 25 episodes will likely focus on Volumes 1-4. The reason I say Volume 4 is because the ending of volume 4 is a really great way to end the season. Roughly 4-7 episodes per volume is what I'm expecting. Volume 5 and 6 doesn't seem to have a great season end compared to 4 since 5 and 6 sets up events for 7+. Also, from relooking at chapter titles for LN Vol 1 and the progress of the episodes so far, I think Volume 1 is covered in the first 4 episodes, so we still have 2 more episodes of content for the first volume. Things that people complain about being skipped are just in-depth details of events, or a few events they wished were animated or extended longer.

Naofumi's opinion of slaves sure is rather unique. Hmm pretty catchy opening. It was cute seeing Raphtalia's reaction to seeing her meal. So her parents were killed by the same monsters that the heroes were called to take down. Its nice seeing Naofumi treat Raphtalia so well given how cynical he usually is. Cute seeing the bond between Raphtalia and Naofumi start to improve as they fight together. That was some good teamwork that they showed against the dog. Its good that she managed to overcome her fear. An interesting episode that did well in not just introducing Raphtalia as a character but also show the slowly developing bond that is forming between the two of them.

IS this following the LN or Manga because its pretty close to the manga at this point, i guess its supposed to follow the LN but seems to actually follow the manga better.

I agree to say this episode seemed rushed. Firsly Naofumi buys his slave and is a complete jerk with her for no real reason, then we can see he's still a good boy who cares about her after all, and at the end of the episode she already see him like a substitute for her parents. Hell that was fast.

But I still find this anime very catchy. I like all this magical-RPG world and stuff. If they rushed that kind of important character evolution, I assume a lot of things will happen in next episodes. I expect nice twists and interesting sub-stories.

So the order of how it came about was Web Novel>Light Novel>Manga>Anime.
Anime is based off manga. Manga is based off light novel but with less details, inner dialogue and events.
Light novel is based off Web Novel, but when it got serialized as a LN, the author added new arcs and story plots, so the story will actually be much longer than the original. If you want inner monologues, character depth, and more story, light novel is the best way to go. Visually and due to costs, the anime was better to be adapted based off the manga because the manga isn't packed with inner monologues, that wouldn't work well animating a ton of still pictures with a lot of inner talking. The manga also kept everything that was important towards the progress of the story. Things such as character references, important key plots and words, etc. Of course not everything is drawn out in the manga, there's a couple side stories thrown into the manga adaptation that is just taken out from the light novel. So the manga adaptation has like 1-2 very small chapters to introduce characters they had to skip over that later become important.

I was really impressed with the sound design in this episode - especially the difference in reverb from the close, tight tunnels to the massive cavern. Top notch.

It's Raphtalia! Best raccoon Raphtalia! (I actually wasn't super convinced by the VN this episode where she was supposed to be screaming in horror... but it's OK.)

Naofumi is such a nice guy, taking care of Raphtalia like that. Anything but a slave. Giving her food, a place to sleep, supports her when she needs it, I like him!

Raphtalia though, is so damn adorable! I envy Naofumi, I want to pat her head too!! She lost her parents at the first Wave of Catastrophe and the events are still haunting her. Poor girl :(

Great introduction of Raphtalia and already some nice development.

Naofumi turning that white flag into a Japanese flag at the end was a nice touch.

Was a bit disappointed that I wasn't getting treated to another 40 minute episode, but all the same I loved that second episode even more than the first. Really wish they would have make the dark moments a bit darker like in the manga, but overall it was pretty lit.

Light novel. Volume 1. Chapter 12.

Ok ignore me it seems im reading the manga not done the LN yet .

Still people saying its fast.. its like 4 Manga chapters in 2 episodes one which was 40mins and another which was 20mins so 60mins between 4 chapter's.

I fell like the manga is a bit fast, but not unacceptable. The extra chapters made it up. The anime cut out the monologue which makes the pacing go even faster.
The manga is adapted based on the web novel, quite different from the light novel at some points and definitely less polished.

What the fuck was that pacing? It's not deal-breaking yet but it's somewhat worrying. They have 25 episodes to work with so idk why they decided to cram 1/3 of a light novel volume into 1 episode. The key events got through but the small details and episodes that made this part of the story all the more endearing were lost.

2 chapters in 1 episode is fine?

2 chapters of the manga but around 100 pages of the first LN volume. A lot of the more nuanced details that really fleshed out their relationship was missing.
Some examples are
1. Naofumi's ulterior motives for buying Raphtalia
2. The reason why Raphtalia keeps denying that she wants or likes something whenever Naofumi asks her if she likes it
3. Naofumi's inner monologues that reveal his gradual mental shift from seeing Raphtalia as purely a tool for his survival into an actual sympathetic companion.

I may just be nitpicking, but without the smaller things like these it felt like Raphtalia was warming up to Naofumi too fast for the sake of the plot and vice versa.
But to be honest, after reading the discussion that's been going on here and mulling over it a bit more, I'm starting to think there's more merit to how they adapted this arc the way they did than I gave them credit for. Fingers crossed for future.

She was looking in a mirror and shield hero crouched in a spot absorbing the hair into the shield. That's why you saw the shield glow, but didn't see the shield hero. He's off screen holding the shield out. Was less expensive to draw, and it allowed you to appreciate the cuteness of Raphtalia after her hair cut rather than having a Naofumi in the picture distracting viewers lol. Similar to how depending on where you stand in front of the mirror, certain parts behind you aren't visible to you.

At this pace, LN 1 will be covered by the end of Episode 4. Which is pretty much 5 episodes since Episode 1 was 40 min long. This amount spread between 5 episodes it typically seen in anime, but it does "seem" to have a brisk pace because of the lack of extensive monologue. But the banquet scene will have a good Naofumi monologue so I'm not too worried :P I'm pretty sure each novel after that will be covered in 6-7 episodes and they'll likely end at end of LN 4 or very beginning of LN 5. Reason why I feel this is a good ending to the season is because of the "aftermath." Wink wink. ;P

Reasonable explanation, especially the cuteness part. Attention to the cuteness, everyone!

I'm aware about the angle, but I thought at least his hand would be visible, though I guess it makes sense that it's under the shield.

Raccoon girl is cute, voice acting on point. However the pacing doesnt seem right. The source is equally bad at it as it seems, but from meeting her to this? Was hoping to see some developement and more than just one ep.

However its a nice show so far.

Great episode.

As someone who couldn't bare waiting after watching the first episode, I went ahead and read the Web Novel, not the LN and I do agree with some of the people here who pointed out that the episode was fast. They did speed through a lot of scenes and skip out on a lot of subtle info but the anime only people seem fine with it so that's good. I still kinda wish they spent another episode on their early bonding.

Anyway, I don't really have complaints about the episode and even if I did none of that matters because I finally get to see Raphtalia animated. She's so precious.
Raphtalia is love, Raphtalia is life. <3

I'm also kinda surprised that there are quite a few difference between the WN and LN which the anime is based off, I suppose while the overall 'meaning' to the story remains the same, it also feels different. The WN doesn't have the scene with them fighting the dog monster and there a number of other subtle differences.
I kinda wish they animated the scene with Raphtalia playing with the ball and the little incident that happens there (Not sure if that happens in the manga/LN). It'd really help drive home how much that ball means to Raphtalia later on.

In the WN, Naofumi states that Raphtalia just sorta started calling him Naofumi-sama after a point while here he seems to recognize it. While I really liked the idea of fighting the dog monster adn what it represents to Raphtalia, I kinda liked the WN's version of Raphtalia just gradually calling Naofumi 'Naofumi' instead of 'Master'.
I also think the scene with Naofumi holding Raphtalia and calming her down during the night could've been better in addition to adding the scene in the inn. Nevertheless this was overall really good and I guess if they need to get to the meat of the story they have to speed things up. Anyway, I'm just happy to see Raph animated.

I hope with all my heart they do justice to that one scene that made Raphtalia such an endearing character to me.

The ED song is so beautiful.

Much better episode than the first, in my opinion!

Raphtalia and Naofumi's journeys was a treat to watch, they really compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses very well. Naofumi keeping up his scary side while also looking out for little Raphtalia was very sweet to see, and little Raphtalia is just adorable! We got a bit of her tragic backstory here too and it was nice to see her stepping up for Naofumi there. Meanwhile, seeing Naofumi cancel that final order was really nice to see, it just shows that he's slowly starting to consider Raphtalia more than just a slave and starting to slowly trust her. I'm looking forward to seeing more of these two in the coming episodes. Lol @ that misleading info from Naofumi though, "She might scream at night".
Op and ED were pretty cool too, but I would have to say i preferred the ED more in terms of the music but the visuals of the Op was glorious nevertheless.

You hit on exactly what the problem with use of slavery in this series is besides the obvious moral issues. Because even if you don't care about that it's still very pointless angle of the story. You could do everything about Naofumi and Raph's relationship in 2nd episode without even being thing. Naofumi's attempts to force do things with pain never work and stop doing at end of episode. Nobody in this thread is taking about because you just ignore it. It is not an element critically engaged in series and only exists to attract edgelords until characters start forming similiar relationships you see in most isekai. For that matter all the isekai that involve the MC participanting slave feisthism are just like SH, where all protags are nice to their slaves so it is okay, harem or otherwise. It is bad plot device that would have been better served not being there. But its huge trend on Narou ever since Slave Harem so everyone does it.

As far 2nd episode is concerned, I don't have any issues with pacing. If anything its better improve Naofumi and Raph relationship to acceptable standards for the shows interest. What was lost is minor anyway.

Yeah. They should have made this at least 1 and a half episodes for raphtalia development and not censoring it at all.

Actually, there is a point about her being a slave, hopefully they'll get into why later.
As for his shield, maybe later as well, but it just does work, the same as the other "heroes" weapons.

And who cares if she's a dog,racoon,racoon dog,whatever,since she's all cute!
Also loving the op/ed themes, esp the op,fits this anime perfectly.

"i still don't taste a thing" line killed me lol also even cute killer rabbits can gush out pools of blood.

episode was alright like the OP,though honestly have no idea why having the slave dynamic needed to be a thing if by the end of the episode she was already gonna be super attached to him ...but okay

Because nobody wanted to be his companion so he bought a slave.

This is honestly well done, can't believe I cried, when I didn't back when I was reading the manga, I couldn't careless about Raphtalia and her past but when I realize how well done and relatable both of them to each other, I cried, the anime did pretty well on showing me that while the manga just be like so here's your tool lol, the manga still great tho this is just one thing the anime did better and more emotional

Inb4 this is an LN adaptation: yes I know that, but I only read the manga

No-one thinks having slaves are ok here.. but in that world it is ok to have slaves will continue to be a thing and brought up so if you dont like it move on.

Its not a plot device because he needs fighters and no-one wants to party with him.

He never likes slavery either but he need's fighter's.
