I've officially abandoned this account. Moving to kitsu.io
I am an absolute sucker for romcoms. (I'm not kidding. 90% of my anime list are romcoms.)
A wise man once said.
"Of course, as a man of culture. I cannot ignore the allure of a flat chest. It is only in such form that you can truly appreciate the budding tips. However... large breasts also come with their own allure. While flat chest would be a bud, large breasts are in full bloom. To be engulfed in them and receive their nectar is one of the greatest desires of man. Both are extremes in their own right. Both are scared fruits, and both are beautiful. So then is it not better to receive both?" -Nidome no Jinsei wo Isekai de - Chapter 26.2
Types of anime that I absolutely refuse to watch:
Any anime that goes longer than 70 episodes in a single season. (Too difficult to catch up and filler problems)
Any yaoi / shounen-ai (The reason is pretty obvious)
Reverse harems (It's pretty hard to enjoy if you don't find the female lead good.)
The entire SAO franchise. The abridged series is an exception. (Just no. All the more now the author decided to go woke)
Shows that throws fanservice just because with nothing else to offer (Unless it's a self-aware comedy. Why would I want to watch a trash fanservice show when there is hentai available?)
Idol genre (I don't understand the appeal AT ALL. I mean yeah, their songs are great, but anime? it's boring as shit.)
"The perfect human male MC". They have 0 flaws and gets all the girls because "OMG HE'S SO STRON AND SO KIND IM SO WET AHHHH" (They never grow. They never develop. They are one of the most tasteless characters in history and do not exist in real life, ever.)
Almost all of the anime I watched have mini-reviews. Be sure to check it out on my anime list!
My rating system (highly depends on my taste):
10/10 - Masterpiece
What I personally consider as a masterpiece. I can completely immerse in the show or scenes that I can relate to in real life. The amount of work and thought put into the anime would be monumental.
9/10 - Great
What most people (emphasis on most) consider as a masterpiece. The ones that I can watch it a thousand times and not get bored. Ever. Character development and story are done spectacularly. It gives a unique vibe that cannot be found on any other show. Anything from this score and above is a must-watch.
8/10 - Very good
I would be able to recognise which anime it is by just looking at a screenshot of a scene. It shows concepts of what new animes can be or should be. I'll usually rewatch those series.
7/10 - Good
An anime that I enjoyed. It might suffer from a few minor problems that I can ignore.
6/10 - Fine
The default score. There are a few good aspects of the show, but still, suffers from flaws such as plot holes and weird character decisions that I cannot ignore.
5/10 - Average
"¯\_(ツ)_/¯ " sums up my opinion of this anime. Series where I just have no opinion, or painfully mediocre, boring or generic will also fall into this category. Nothing strikes as unique or memorable. I would most likely forget everything happened about the anime in less than a day.
4/10 - Bad
Animes that have a flawed plot or terrible world-building. These are shows that I usually half-way or wholly completed but took a massive grain of salt.
3/10 - Very bad
Where there are severe problems with the plot and characters. Many fundamental issues such as pacing, unused expositions are apparent in the anime.
2/10 - Horrible
Where the plot and characters stop making sense with cliches all over the place. The world-building doesn't make sense (Things such as background story does not match what the world looks like). The differences between scoring a 2 and a 1 are down to enjoyment.
1/10 - Appalling
An anime is appalling when the show just offends my mind, and I hate it with a passion. There are no redeeming qualities. Where the world-building either doesn't exist or doesn't make any sense. Characters do not make sense. Etcetera. It is so bad that you cannot even laugh at or find jokes in it. Just stay as far away as possible.
(No score)
I just don't bother rating OVAs, ONAs, and specials (Unless they extend the story).
だっでめんどくさいですし ('Cause it's a pain to do so.)
My opinions on animation studios
A-1 Pictures
A-1 is a slot machine. Most of the time, you get trash, but sometimes you get gems.
This is because they outsource almost every anime they make. Take Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai for example. It's an amazing anime with fantastic comedy. The Chika dance is literally the 2019 version of the Haruhi dance. But people will not remember this is an A-1's work, they will remember this is the work of Omata Shinichi. The director who worked for Shaft in the past. People will remember this is the work of Naoya Nakayama. The one who is behind the legendary Chika dance ED consists of 845 keyframes. This is never A-1's achievement. This company has no sense of self, unlike other big studios which all of them has their own distinct style.
The quality depends on the choice of the source material, and the staff they hire. If they hire incompetent directors (which they usually do), it's going to be trash. A-1 has gained a bad reputation for ruining franchises.
I challenge you, name one anime that is an A-1 original excluding Shinsekai Yori and Anohana without Googling. MV's don't count. I guarantee you have no idea.
Bones
3 words. Nakamura Yutaka. The national treasure of animation, working as an animation director at Bones. Anything he's in is guaranteed to have animation that makes you aroused. Extremely fluid animation and awesome camera work. If Kyoto animation dominates in detail, then Bones dominates in dynamic actions.
Cloverworks
A branch of A-1 Pictures. They are one of the same.
Doga Kobo
Moe, Yuri and potential pedophile is their lifeblood. They are excellent at character expressions, and they always put lots of keyframes on motions to emphasise their emotions. Their performance is consistent, depending on the source material, the anime can turn out pretty great.
EMT²
Fuck. This. Studio. I'm pretty sure they don't care whatever they made.
J.C. Staff
The same as A-1. Putting anime as rapid as a machine gun, so fast that they frequently ran out of budget. Then we are served with 20 minutes of powerpoint.
That said, their choice of the source material is generally pretty good. The director made sure the anime didn't turn into a complete disaster (half of the time). So it's slightly better than A-1, as long as they don't be an idiot and take several huge franchises at the same time.
Kinema Citris
An animation studio that got instantly blew up in popularity due to Made in Abyss and Kevin Penkin. They follow the same release schedule as Kyoto Animation. 1-2 anime a year. This gives the animators plenty of time to plan out what to do and also ensures quality. It seems they are doing pretty well right now.
Kyoto Animation
The inventor of Moe (I know it's not, but it blew up because of them). Ridiculously high budget animation. Anything they made is 90% guaranteed to be from good to absolute masterpiece.
One of the very few animation studios that can pay animators through actual salary per month instead of the amount of work done. They also have courses to train their employees and even a cafe for them. Many animation studios wanted to do this but failed due to financial difficulties.
They sometimes handpicked light novels that are winners from their competition to adapt to anime.
Madhouse
One of the big old brands that still able to produce good anime. And state of the art, 10/10, A+, absolute perfection CG scenes /s.
Manglobe
First off, rest in piece.
Known for Deadman Wonderland and The World God Only Knows, one of the greatest non-ecchi harem anime ever made. Then, it went bankrupt and never rose up again...
P.A Works
They have the ability to create art that can compete Kyoto Animation, but cannot compete Kyoto animation with storylines. Their performance is unstable. They can range from excellent to straight-up boring.
Seven
Just stick to doing hentai. You can't make actual good anime.
Shaft
45 degrees, abstract art style and Akiyuki Shinbou. When talking about anime that blows your mind with the art style, this takes the cake. It's so special that you can recognise it in 3 seconds. When done well, this greatly enhances the viewing experience (Sneak in monologues in text without being obtrusive is genius). When done badly, the entire anime feels cryptic, and we have no idea what is going on.
Silver Link
Is this studio amazing? Not really. Is it bad? Not really. Their anime is generally at the mediocre to above average.
Quoting Digibro, Silver Link is kinda like Shaft Lite. The art style isn't as insane as Shaft, but they will bring it out to up things a bit.
Studio Ghibli
Well, it's Ghibli. What more I can say?
ufotable
Masters of CG animation, so much so that you don't notice it.
If you don't like or never watched the Fate series, you won't touch this studio.
