i hope it's not going to be completely episodic, i really liked this first episode, the characters were really interesting & the best part was the tone that was set up. definitely looking forward to this one!

from the preview at the end of the official airing, it seems like the next episode is going to be part 1 of a story

It was apparently a pre-air. The first episode was originally supposed to be aired at October 11. That's why the next episode will probably air at October 18.

I figured it had to be something like that. Thanks for confirming.

You're welcome :-)

Isn't the murderer of this episode too cruel??? He rape children and the kill them, can't he just rape them and let them go?

it doesn't even say if he r*pes them, he might just endulge in killing children for all we know

I don't know what's Moriarty said in Japanese language but from subtitle "Yeah, they exclusively target young boys for their amusement, and then, after they're done, slaughter them"

In JP the word they translated to amusement is 慰み者, which means "(person treated as a) plaything".

I think they left it vague so that you can imagine whatever horrible things you want, but I think torture is implied more than r*pe.

Brutal, dark, unforgiving. Seems like it's going to be that kind of mystery show, with a pretty interesting detective protagonist. At first I thought it's also going to contain fantasy elements, such as vampires, but oh well, I guess those teeth were of a child murderer. Regardless, it looks promising.

The anime I've been waiting for, I'm totally satisfied with how the anime pulled it off except for the ed lol
It caught me off guard
"Everyone fails sometimes
But dreams won't fade, dreams won't fade
Let's chase them as many times as it takes and don't lose
Because today after all is today and once you wake up, it'll be a new morning"

It's really crazy about this anime idea, Sherlock Holmes's enemy is the main character, Moriarty. Moriarty is indeed suitable to be the main character, with the same brains as Sherlock as a mortal enemy even though Sherlock is a hero, but here the hero story tends to be Moriarty.

It's a decent start. I like mystery&detective genre. The reasoning behind capturing the culprit was a bit simplistic but, I liked this episode overall.

Things I'd like to point out:

1. Is the episode really set in 1911, New York?
I saw the previous comments that say this episode is set in 1911, New York which left me kinda puzzled. The anime started with a boy called El, reading a Sherlock Holmes book in 1911 New York. It didn't exactly say the Earl's crime happened during that timeline. Maybe it happened before 1911. Also, Earl refers to a British nobleman ranking above a viscount and below a marquess. So, I think the location is probably not New York, but London maybe..? It's just my guess tho lol

2. Just a small info, 'je crois en moi' means 'I believe in myself'. A fitting motto for Moriarty character, I think :)

Well, I thought this was pretty great. We've been getting so many detective shows, including ones with Sherlock himself, so an anime following Moriarty as the protagonist is a neat twist on this trend. And in true Moriarty fashion, he gives no fucks. That ending was something. Sure, maybe letting the father get revenge was cathartic for the father himself, but no doubt there was manipulation on Moriarty's part as they knew the father was keen on taking revenge when they talked to him in the shop previously. I'm glad the anime isn't shying away from Moriarty's personality.

I didn't think I'd enjoy it this much, but I did.

The art and animation were breathtaking. I think IG should take over Black Butler. Lol

The guys were really beautiful, but not to the point that I stop seeing them as humans like with Free.

Moriarty was introduced to resemble Sherlock, and I was like 'this guy makes people commit crime! Are they about to show him as a good person now?' But then, they made a desperate man commit a crime, and my mind was blown away. This actually feels like it could have been a part of the original story.

I love how the story takes place in the same time period as the original Sherlock Holmes books.

And, Moriarty's older brother is hot!

No, the series isn't set in New York City of 1911. That was just a framing device introducing the episode. The boy reading a Sherlock Holmes book is just in 1911 New York City. Moriarty is a character in the book. It then delves into the world of the novels. There are a lot of indicators of this throughout the episode like the classic London fog, the British royal coat of arms statue on the wall (I believe this one was the lion and the unicorn or it might have been the griffins), fragments of a newspaper article covering British concerns of German competitive trade with the British Raj (modern day India), etc.

I agree. The first comment here in this discussion room said that the episode was set in 1911 which is clearly wrong when you think about it. Kinda left me perplexed lol. Thks for the reply.

hardly know much of about Sherlock Holmes related stuff so seeing the side of the criminal mastermind that is Moriarty is a interesting take sure is quite the pretty boy compared to his counterpart lol

I don’t like how this version of Moriarty (character) is copy of the original Sherlock. He could still be a genius in different way.
There are more to see, I mean, we have different versions of Moriarty throughout the media:
BBC's Moriarty: A complete psychopath
Jared Harris's Moriarty: A cold and calculating villain
And here we have anime Moriarty who is similar to the original Sherlock, but still some differences.

First episode was pretty nice, sets up what kinda story we'll see in the future, though we don't know the reason why yet as to why Moriarty is doing this other than his interest for solving mysteries. I'm pretty interested in seeing the conflicts he comes in contact with tbh.

Please forgive me but the main reason I decided to watch the first ep is because I saw the trailer and there's a lot of bishies. But I think I made the right decision bcs it's not the typical detective story. Would like to know more about the 3 characters.

A morally twisted detective. I was going to drop it as it set up as a generic detective story with the questioning and stuff. Might give it another go. Not a fan of the art style

The anti 'Study in Scarlet', 'solved' by the morally twisted counterpart to Sherlock Holmes. This worked well as an introductory case - thematically speaking at the very least.

This is an interesting take for sure: Moriarty being the protagonist of 'some crime consultant action' is nothing new to the non-canonical Holmesian writings (see Kurland's 'Moriarty Series' as an example of that), but they hardly focus on the Moriarty household - and especially not on Moriarty's unnamed brother(s). It won me over based on the premise alone.

Though, I still have my gripes with it. First, Narrative-wise the mystery was hardly compelling. It was even a tad boring, and clearly lacked the cleverness of Doyle's very own first detective novel.

Second, I cannot say I really like the art direction: Victorian backgrounds are okayish I suppose. I have also no problem with the bishonen versions of the characters, but they are all extremely generic - thus very dull-looking. Would it have been too much to ask the artists to make them a bit distinct from one another? It is truly hard for me to believe that this protagonist is 'William James Moriarty', and not some other guy from one of the dozen bishonen series released every season. Paget's drawings - the official illustrator to 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' - were brilliant, because he managed to make each and every character recognisable, thus coining forever their iconic status. Here, I am afraid that this Moriarty on the design alone would have never been iconic.

The use of the colours leaves a lot to be desired too: the scarlet-ish atmosphere by the end of the pilot was too on the nose. Yes, they are not the good guys. Yes, this is nightmarish. Yes, this is also very reminiscent of 'A Study in Scarlet'. Cheers guys, you made it so obvious that I rolled my eyes during the whole ending sequence. I was not expecting subtetly, but this is one way of going way too overboard with your theming. I can only hope this was a mere gimmick of the first episode.

came to watch since people kept saying it's the most underrated anime of 2020. episode was really not that great. the narrative was too simple and boring for me; also found moriarty kinda annoying- how he kept speaking out loud all the deductions he makes of his targets. I should've seen it coming for a shounen show.. but maybe historical detective shows are just really not it for me.

will keep watching a few more eps for now.

so it's sherlock holmes but with a dark, vigilante justice motif. that's fine

but i didn't find the case to be all that intricate. it was pretty straight forward, for a sherlock holmesian type of murder mystery, no? and the characters are all monotone

5/10. truthfully i'm not in a big rush to watch the next episode, but i likely will in the next few days or weeks

ps - just to be clear, yes i know moriarty is from the holmes' stories (and even if i hadn't known that, they tell us at the beginning of this episode haha)

I kind of like the idea of a detective that is sort of an executioner(?) or at least that's how this episode sell it, being set in 1911 will probably help a lot this type of story.
I found it funny that when they show how is going on with the father after getting revenge the electro dance song start playing.

Having seen Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock, I was so confused with the first few scenes. It was until I saw the revenge scene that I understood their term "crime consultant." There is not enough mystery in this first episode since William James Moriarty instantaneously confronts the murderer right after gathering the facts. However, it is interesting to see how he acquiesces to crimes in order to punish previous crimes.
“Why does an apple fall when it is ripe? Is it brought down by the force of gravity? Is it because its stalk withers? Because it is dried by the sun, because it grows too heavy, or because the boy standing under the tree wants to eat it? None of these is the cause.... Every action of theirs, that seems to them an act of their own free will is in the historical sense not free at all but is bound up with the whole course of history and preordained from all eternity.”

Moriarty seemed proud of his accomplishment, but when the rapist was about to get killed, he had to go outside and smoke a cig. Perhaps he can't face the full consequences of what he's doing. It's easier to just look at the guy when he's already dead than the act itself...
