On Quintessential Quintuplets, S1E5 !!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
———————
Current Ranking:
1.Miku
Is there much to say? The episode practically opens with another example reinforcing the idea that Miku is objectively best waifu.
As implied by her flashback, she changes her hairstyle to voluntarily appear more attractive. This is most likely an effort to maintain and strengthen her bond with Uesugi. If so, she’s the most committed to their friendly relationship and it’s adorable. Another way it could be interpreted is that she’s simply acting upon her insecurities alone, which still makes her relatable as a character.
It is important to note that this is the weaker interpretation though, given that at the time of the flashback she worries about Uesugi’s lack of reappearance, meaning that she was considering him specifically in her thoughts at the time.
In another example, Miku smiles welcomingly at Uesugi after he calls her his ‘partner’. Her smile is emphasized by the sparkling backdrop behind her, indicating her joy for the title. It’s an unconventional compliment, yet she accepts it with an expression of much thankfulness. Again, it displays her humility and gratefulness for even the small things, working in tandem with the previous example to reinforce this overall superior, attractive image of Miku.
2.Nino
The idea being developed around her hostile character resulting from an expression of high value for her sisters is also reinforced in this episode. She appears worried in the first frame we see her, given the background context of failing to see the fireworks with her sisters, and her hostile ‘facade’ drops momentarily at the end when she thanks Uesugi for providing a compromise. It hints at the idea that there’s another side to her character that we’ve only been partially revealed to, of which is a better representative of her true self. Still, her character has not been developed too much in this episode, and like Miku, pre-established truths were simply emphasized which unfortunately does not give her a good fighting chance at stealing number one.
3.Itsuki
I like how Itsuki’s tough-girl attitude was lessened in this episode and her vulnerability exposed more as she welled-up at the fact of being lost and abandoned by Uesugi. It’s one of the rare moments that we get to see her more realistically, having her own weaknesses, which is either being lost, not being with her sisters for the occasion, or both. If the latter option is entertained, then, like Nino, it exposes the strength of her bonds with the people she cares about the most and suggests that she’d be well-committed in a romantic relationship.
4.Ichika
Intially, I only saw Ichika as a lazy scumbag with a playfulness that only made her slightly seductive. I found this episode to be slightly redemptive though, as she was hiding her hidden, passionate pursuit of an acting career. With an affinity towards arts myself, especially performance and media-arts, I found myself respecting her decision to lower her attentiveness to academic studies. It’s not a decision I fully agree with, however, personally having experienced the drag of academic studies interfering with my own artistic passions, I admired and understood her focusing on her dreams and more empathized with her philosophy of living life to the fullest in an earlier episode. Her hard work ethic in this field, as suggested by her rushing off to work in a previous episode, may even explain her messy room and appearing tired when Uesugi arrives. It should be mentioned that although she was sacrificing a special time with her sisters, she felt she was doing the best thing for them by hopefully making them proud when she eventually revealed her hidden intentions. She may have been mistaken, but it goes to show her own consideration towards those she cares about, which is all that matters. It’s this that I believe redeems her character, and combined with her big sister energy, significantly improves her attractiveness in the group.
5.Yotsuba
She’s just the same old energetic and childish girl. She is respectable though in the sense that she knows how to make light of a bad situation, as seen with her positivity regarding their splitting up when watching the fireworks. Other than that, she just fails to be romantically appealing to me. She honestly just sounds like a good friend.
Extra Notes:
Why does Uesugi study so much? I like how we’re starting to get a bit more insight into his character rather than leaving him feeling quite 2-dimensional. I hope they don’t fail to develop his character into something interesting. Apart from that, this review took way too long to write and honestly I feel like I may have failed to effectively write my thoughts just because I am just so ready to move on to something else now haha. But thanks regardless for reading thus far.
